The 2017-18 season nostalgia picks:

A number of players made their way into my squad before the game opened, last season’s returns fresh in mind..

Andrew Robertson’s end of season form was painful to observe as a Virgil van Dijk owner. At 6.0 he is ready to take up the Marcos Alonso mantle of most desirable defensive option in my opinion.

Mo Salah. Not out of fear. For the joy of FPL points.

With Danny Rose progressing to the World Cup Semi-Finals, Ben Davies was always going to be my next defensive target. The defender served many of us well at the beginning of last season, with double-digit potential and rotation over the opening fixtures less of a concern, he’s a must for me. I am conscious that I held onto Davies too long last season – this year I have earmarked Ben Mendy as my exit strategy, as and when.

Similarly, for Sergio Aguero, an early World Cup exit promoted him to the top of my summer watchlist, the anticipation of Brazil reaching the latter stages and rendering Gabriel Jesus a late starter seemed too good to be true. Aguero was a player I brought in ‘early’ last season at the moment everybody else switched from Morata to Firmino, GW17. I held him all the way through to GW32 so am familiar with the rotational fear that accompanies waiting for a City team sheet. I don’t know if he will be a long term pick, or if I’ll shift to Aubameyang after a few weeks (one of my preferred choices before the fixtures were released), but he’s nailed into my GW1 squad for sure.

Marko Arnautovic is another player I earmarked for inclusion at the end of last season. He’s just a fun player to own.

Kenedy is the final player in this group. A player I was keen on bringing into my squad last season, but for numerous reasons, never got round to, and watched on enviously as he returned a brace two or three gameweeks later. My squad structure includes two 5.0m midfielders and despite poor opening fixtures, he’s a player I’m keen to rotate in and out of my starting XI.

The desirables:

With Manchester City’s outrageous fixture run GWs 2-7, doubling up on attack seems bordering on essential. Having opted for Sergio Aguero, I am keen to leave a third slot open for manoeuvre after one or two weeks, once the returning KDB and co. are back in the mix. Riyad Mahrez is the player I’ve chosen. He’s a player that I’ve felt inclined to ignore over the past two season’s since his well earned price hike following the title winning season. But his FPL returns for Leicester last season, 16pts more than Sane make him almost irresistible in the City lineup. De Bruyne may well end up being the long term hold (or a double up partner) but for now, Mahrez IN!

Christian Eriksen is my third premium midfielder and it is the disarray at Spurs that draws me to him. With Kane potentially making a late return to the first team post-WC, I’m expecting the goal-thirsty Denmark version of Eriksen to step up to the mark.

My final desirable is Josh King. Early drafts included Zaha in this spot, and there are one or two 6.5 forwards I wouldn’t completely rule out – Wood, Mitrovic. King’s end of season form was mildly reminiscent to that of the previous season. Early sound bites from King about being unhappy played out of position last season lead me to believe he is about to recapture something of that form.

The uncertainties:

James Tomkins was a Free-Hit player I owned for Blank-Gameweek-35 last season. A modest 6-point return betrayed his involvement on the day, Livescore kept me informed of his numerous efforts on goal – so close to being a Free Hit hero! However, with Aaron Wan-Biassaka providing the role of 4.0 budget pick, I do wonder if doubling on Palace defence is a little much…

Cedric Soares was another early pick, a player that has always flattered to deceive in FPL. I am concerned about Mark Hughes ability to muster defensive resolve in his back line, not to mention a tummy bug denting his preseason return, so this 4.5 slot is very much up for grabs.

James McArthur was a non-pick last season thanks to the kindly priced Luka Milivojevic. However his goal scoring heroics did not go unnoticed. The arrival of Kouyate (and potentially RLC) could be a concern with the midfield options available to Hodgson fairly numerous. Helder Costa, Ruben Neves and Tom Cairney are all side steps I’m considering.

The Goal keeper pair is something I’ve toyed with a little. Pre-price releases, Dubravka at 4.5 was pencilled in as a potential set and forget, but with the early fixture run, a 5.0 valuation and the arrival and modest pricing of Portugese legend Rui Patricio at Wolves, my head has been well and truly turned!

Tapping in to Sean Dyche’s backline is something that I’ve been conscious of tinkering with since the game opened. With the defensive options receiving a token 5.0m valuation across the board, I see Joe Hart (assuming he hasn’t been brought in as cover for Lindegard!) as a reasonable budget route into the Burnley backline for the short to medium term – a spell that includes a very enticing opening run of fixtures.

Conclusion

Thoughts? Suggestions? Where have I gone wrong, and where have I gone right? What do you suggest I change? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

    Alternative team structure

    RMT

Leno/Hamer (Still undecided if gonna switch to 2X4.5)

    Robertson/Mendy/Bailly/Bas-Wassika/Pielter

    Salah/B.Silva/Richarlison/Kenedy/4.5

    Aguero/Aubermyang/Arnie

    Any thoughts?

If planning 3-4-3, the fourth mid is weak. If 4-3-3, fourth defender weak. A cheaper keeper set up would allow you to fix one or the other ?

Had exact same team until other day, went Shaw as he'll play until wildcard so I could get Kepa in for Leno. Also switched Kenedy because of horrible fixtures to Cairney for now

      I tried something similar.
      Fabianski - Foster (4.5)
Robertson - Mendy - Tomkins - Cedric - Wan Bissaka
      Salah - B Silva - Richarlison - Fraser - 4.5
      Aubameyang - Aguero - King

I think your 4th mid needs needs to be a somewhat reasonably point scorer. Not sure Kennedy fits the bill considering the fixtures. I put Fraser in there who seems to be the best 5.5 option. I'd try cheaper keepers, Arsenal's defence is not good. King or Arnie is 50/50 I guess, does Arnie or Noble has pens? Id reckon your defence is better, al though that really depends on Man U being worth investing in.

I like the approach though, good to see something different.

Thank you guys, I realuse Kenedy is pretty weak for a 4th mid but other option even at 5.5 really entices me plus the lack of budget.

I just find 5.0 for and Arsenal Keeper just too good to miss

Defence is alright I guess since only 1 of the 4.0s has to play every week both in okay-ish defence teams

The idea of this structure is an easy downgrade in def/strikers to upgrade elsewhere when more information is available

I get the appeal, but think about it. It is not certain Leno is starting in the PL, and if he does badly he might be replaced by Cech.

Koscielny has a long term injury, while the pairing of Mustafi and Sokratis lacks pace. Mustafi is also prone to making mistakes, which we all know. Sokratis is 30 playing in a new league, which May take time to adapt and he is no Sergio Ramos. Also, if one of them gets injured we have to play Holding or Mavropanos there. They would be better options for a lower price, and make the keepers appeal worse by being worse defenders.

On top of that Monreal is not even match fit, it is unclear when he will be while Kolasinac is injured for at least two months. They start against City and Chelsea. The last time Arsenal played City Sane drove Bellerin absolutely crazy. Hazard might fancy doing the same.

Long story short, I think waiting is the more sensible option. Arsenal will still have a 5.0 goalkeeper in a few weeks / months and you can still hop on then without all these risks or be happy you dodged a bullet.

Oh Yeah, Arsenal fan here btw so I would like to be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

Sorry for posting this here. Main page is really crowded

    Which one?

    A) degea walker mahrez firmino

I've stayed with 2 big hitters upfront despite it no longer being in fashion to enable an easy switch to Kane should he start firing.

TAA a slight risk, granted ... PVA is a cash-cow that will allow money to sort out an early problem by downsizing to Tomkins - would get me Robbo for example - but I prefer to start this way.
Kabasele is a punt based on advice from Watford fans.

    Thoughts:

    1. Gonna rotate Daniels with Wan-Bissaka. Selling Daniels for Diego Rico, when he's not suspended anymore.
    2. Not sure if I'll start Lucas Moura for the first 2 GWs and then getting Mkhi in, or just have Mkhi from the start. What do you think?
    3. Selling Zaha for Arnie when fixtures favor West Ham.

I think it looks good you have a plan with what you want to do. Interesting theory on Arnie, I have gone with his form over fixtures personally on him alone. I just think he is a great player and a good price. West ham will be much improved this season imo.

      My team:

      Hart ---- Forster
Van Dijk --- Mendy --- Robbo --- Danials --- Wan Biss
Salah --- Mahrez --- Sanchez --- Richarlson --- Hudson Odi
      Arnie --- King --- Zaha

Bit OTT with double liverpool but will bring probably bring in Bellerin once there first 2 fixtures are out the way.

Im contemplating using bench boost first game ...

        1. I feel a bit strange about your goalie rotation. Also, I don't think Forster will start
        2. Awesome that you fit in Mahrez. But, really, get rid of Richarlison. Get Jota instead

Not too sure about Pedro. Looks good elsewhere.

Would you say Jorginho? Would like a differential

Sorry to say that Kanté will outscore Jorginho in terms of points

Not saying it's a lot though

          Consider looking into another team

Pedro looks dross. Chelsea will be slow starters I think. New manager and a team that looks a bit disjointed

    My team:
    Pickford/Stekelenberg
    TAA/Mendy/Trippier/AWB/Peltier
    Salah/Keita/Eriksen/Jota/Cairney
    Aguero/Arny/King

Should I swap out Trippier because he won't start this week and if so for who please?

Robby could hold the place.. or you could go for Davies

Why not swap Trippier for Shaw?

How long will Shaw keep his place?

    Here we go:

    Patricio,
    TAA,Mendy,Tomkins
    Salah, Bilva, Mane, Cairney
    King, Aguero, Auba

    Hamer, Peltier, Stephens, WBA

Top heavy but with balance? Any other suggestions for Cairney? I think TAA will start as he’s genuinely a better player than Clyne.

    Thanks for any help

Thanks - Do you think TAA will start? Bit worried about TAA/Mendy not being nailed. Any other options at 5 outside of Cairney?

      Cairney --> 4.5

      Hamer --> 4.5

I think Patricio will be a keeper (pun intended) - I dont see why you would rotate when save points are what I’m after. Plus Cairney will surely do better than a playing 4.5?

    new team. need thoughts:

    Patricio
    Mendy, Roberson, Davies
    Jota, Salah, Eriksen, Mkhitaryan
    Mitrovic, Aguero, Zaha

    Bench: Dohtery, Wann-Bissaka, McDonald, Hamer

Taking a risk with a couple on the bench, but can't squeeze 1 mil to boost McDonald and Hamer.

    Suggestions? Thanks

    Which combination do you prefer?

    A) Morata, Arnie, Mane, 4.5 (4-3-3 weak bench)

    B) Firmino, Morata, Jota, 4.5 (same as A)

    C) Firmino, Arnie, Bilva, Jota (strong bench and rotation between 4-4-2 // 4-3-3 // 3-4-3)

    D) Arnie, King, Mane, Bilva (same as C)

    Rest of the team:

    Foster - Fabianski
    Mendy - Luiz - TAA - Shaw - WB
    Salah - (....) - Richarlison - (....) - Stephens
    Aguero - (....) - (.....)

Haven't seen Hudson-Odoi in almost any of the teams. Is he considered too risky?

    Is this G2G?

    Kepa (Foster)
    Robertson-Mendy-Shaw (Wan Bissaka-Peltier)
    Salah-Mane-B Silva-Richarlison (Stephens)
    Aguero-Zaha-Austin

    Thanks

    A)

    Forster (Patricio)
    Van Anholt - Robertson - Mendy (Wan-Bissaka - Peltier)
Salah - Mane - BSilva - Richarlison (Cairney)
    Mitrovic - Aguero - King

    B)

    Forster (Patricio)
    Tomkins - Robertson - Mendy (Pereira - Wan-Bissaka)
Salah - Mane - BSilva - Richarlison (Cairney)
    Mitrovic - Aguero - King

Currently on team A but I’m afraid that the bench is too weak. Like the idea of having Periera as an OP sub to switch with PvA or Mitrovic. Which team would you pick? Any thoughts?

Really don't think Forster will play.

I prefer B, but think I'd be tempted by a 4.5 for Pereira so you could keep 0.5 to upgrade a striker if necessary.

Might swap Forster to another 4,5 keeper then.
        Thx for feedback mate

Get Tomkins or risk with Schlupp?
How likely is he to stay in first XI and does Meyer arrival have impact on his position?
