Captains

Captain Sensible – Richarlison tops poll in complicated Gameweek 13 debate

Gameweek 13 of Fantasy Premier League could prove the most difficult for the captaincy this season.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool are on the road this weekend which robs us of the opportunity to back a Salah or Aguero home captaincy.

Meanwhile, Chelsea travel to Spurs leaving the door open for a differential to prove the most popular. But is he the right option to go with?…

Captain Poll

Gameweek 13 sees a surprise leader emerge at the top of the poll in Everton’s Richarlison (£7.0m). No player has garnered more than the Brazilian’s 33.47% backing in the vote so far and when we dig a little deeper, it’s easy to see why. The makeshift centre-forward has three goals and one assist since Gameweek 8, recording an average of 6.6 points per match in his last five league outings. This weekend he goes up against a Cardiff City side conceding 2.2 goals per away match this season.

Below Richarlison is a selection of captaincy household names that have not quite earned the usual support from their owners. Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) have rotated home fixtures quite nicely so far this season but both of them are away this weekend. For that reason, just 22.53% of our voters think Salah is worth captaining at Watford with even fewer (16.89%) supporting Aguero at West Ham.

The last time the pair were ruled out of the captaincy (when they faced each other in Gameweek 8) we were fortunate enough to see Eden Hazard (£11.3m) present a favourable trip to Southampton. This week Chelsea are away at Tottenham, pulling the Belgian out of widespread consideration. Accordingly, he looks set for a 10th-place finish in the captain poll with just 1.59% of the votes.

Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) heads up the best of the rest outside of the this week’s top three with 4.73% backing, after two goals and three assists in the last three Gameweeks.

He is followed by Anthony Martial (£7.6m), whose six goals in five matches has convinced 3.93% of you that he is the optimum captain for Gameweek 13 when Manchester United host Crystal Palace.

After that, it’s Salah’s Liverpool colleague Sadio Mané (£9.9m) with a 1.94% share.

Matt Doherty‘s (£4.9m) potential for big returns against Huddersfield has convinced 1.68% of our voters to back him for the armband, no defender has more backing for Gameweek 13.

Despite boasting more encouraging underlying statistics than team-mate Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) sits way down in ninth on the captain poll. That is almost certainly as a result of his current fitness issues, although his price does mean that his ownership is 20.6% lower than his Brazilian colleague.

So tight when comparing the numbers for the last 4 away games between Salah and Aguero. Salah looks like he might be edging it overall when his assist potential and overall goal involvement are taken into consideration.

    Goal attempts - 16 each
    Goal Conversion - 18.8% each
    Both have 3 goals
    Both have 2 assists
Salah actually has a higher BPS baseline but the BPS total is almost identical

It's a tight call either way - I'll be cross referencing against the opposition stats before I decide between the two. Hopefully that tips the scales a bit more than a coin toss.

      Very useful analysis, thanks!

Looking further into this - Watford seem to have significantly poorer defensive stats within the last 4 home games then WH.

5th worst 'shots on target conceded' (22)
3rd worst 'chances conceded from the right flank' - where I presume Salah will be drifting in from (17)
        3rd worst 'goals conceded' (7)

Swung it for me. If it doesn't go to plan at least I can't say the decision was unsubstantiated anyway.

Everyone's always smug when they don't own him, but then they come crawling back the moment he scores a penalty or whatever. I basically picked him over Hazard in GW7 and have held on. It's cost me a million and a couple of points I guess but whatever. At least Hazard hasn't torn it up in the interim.

Asked a similar question before Cardiff game (again after IB). Folks here thought he would start 100%. He didn't. So I guess you'll just have to wait and see. Anfield express probably will announce the starting line up few minutes before the deadline. So, if you have some decisions to make you can wait for that tiny gap 😀

Not really. Don’t want to stop Fraser or David Silva for him

For all home matches, WHU have conceded the most amount of crosses and chances from their left flank. Do you think Sterling will start over Mahrez on City's right flank and get in the points? Sane looks like the preferred option on the left when Mendy is absent.

He's returned to training and will be assessed ahead of Sunday's match.

I like Jimenez better for upcoming fixtures. But would want to hold onto at least 1 BOU attacker .

Looking to do Wilson -> Jimenez. If Wilson goes up tonight then I make 0.1 but obviously Jimenez may also go up and I risk Wilson not going up.

Do I transfer now or tomorrow morning?

Why get rid of Wilson when he's up against a ropey defence?

        Huddderfield defence is decidedly ropier.

Dont lose Wilson. Why is everyone getting rid off Wilson and Fraser. And I dont understand all love for Jimenez. Mediocre player in mediocre team scoring very little.

Bournemouth will score more goals over the season surely?
Wilson & Fraser will be involved.

Surprised that Sterling is only getting 4% of captaincy votes. Especially in a week where there is no obvious captain. I wonder what he's got to do to be considered in the Salah / Aguero captaincy bracket?

Do we see the Trippier / Aurier rotation being swapped now, with Trippier getting Inter and Aurier back on Prem duty?

I've had a decent run with Trippier but despite the fixture turn there is now a lot of doubt with him all round...

Prem is the more important games and Trippier is the more important right back.

Inter game is very big though...maybe after CL it would settle in his favour again...

Am I good to go, including bench order and C/VC choices??

    Fabianski
    Alonso - Robertson - Doherty
Hazard - Mane - Martial - Dilva - Richardson (vc)
    Aguero (c) - Jiminez

Bench: TAA - Arnie - Peltier - Hamer

I have faith in Aguero (C). City always batter WHU away from home.
