Clues to Manchester City’s Gameweek 18 line-up in League Cup win

Pep Guardiola threw the Fantasy Premier League community some clues to his Gameweek 18 team selection in Manchester City’s League Cup win at Leicester.

The defending champions made a string of changes as they eliminated the Foxes in a penalty shoot-out.

We’ve got all the talking points in this Scout Notes article.

Leicester City 1-1 Manchester City (1-3 on penalties)

Goals: Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) | Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m)

Assists: Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) | Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m)

Leroy Sané (£9.7m) looks in line to start for Manchester City when they host Crystal Palace in Gameweek 18. The German international was not even in the matchday squad on Tuesday night as the Citizens progressed in the League Cup. That will massive boost his credentials as a captain candidate given his remarkable consistency this season. He has blanked in just one start this season, scoring 10 points in his most recent Etihad Stadium.

There might be slightly mild concern for options such as Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) who both played their part at the King Power Stadium. The Argentinian striker started the match but was replaced in the 75th minute by Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m), suggesting that Pep Guardiola was at least trying to manage his minutes.

Meanwhile, Sterling owners would have been in high spirits when they saw that he was benched against Leicester but he did enter the fray in the 66th minute, coming on for Brahim Diaz (£4.7m). The fact that he featured only in the last 24 minutes against Everton should mean that he is sufficiently rested to start on Saturday. The fact that his main competitor for the right-wing position Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) played the whole 90 minutes on Tuesday, also plays into Sterling’s hands too. He will have a point to prove in Gameweek 18 too as he missed his penalty in the shootout.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) reminded us all of the quality he has to offer as he scored Manchester City’s only goal of the tie. It was a spectacular effort which will have some Fantasy managers eyeing him up for inclusion as soon as he looks to be returning to the first-team situation.

“I’ve been out, so long so to play 70 minutes is a really good sign for me personally. I feel a little bit stiff but I’m happy to contribute again.” – Kevin de Bruyne

John Stones (£5.3m) returned from his injury doubts to play in central midfield. That’s not the first time he has fulfilled that role in a cup match, but it may be some time before we see him do it in the Premier League. Fernandinho (£5.4m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) were two more players absent from the matchday squad while Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m) was involved only as a substitute against Leicester.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) was not involved at all while Fabian Delph (£5.3m) was an unused substitute. However, Kyle Walker (£6.5m) played the full 90 minutes, after completing a 90-minute outing against Everton, so it will be interesting to see if he holds onto the right-back berth on Saturday. Vincent Kompany‘s (£5.2m) absence was due to an injury, according to Guardiola.

Jamie Vardy (£8.8m) was absent for Leicester City with Claude Puel keen to not to aggravate an injury. The Foxes manager is hoping to have him fit in time for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea though.

“I hope we can have him on Saturday. He wasn’t fit enough for today. He has trained once and then played against Palace in the Premier League for 90 minutes. It was important to keep him fresh. We have to be careful to avoid another injury. I hope he can play against Chelsea on Saturday.” – Claude Puel

There were plenty of changes made for Leicester although first-team regulars Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Demarai Gray (£5.4m) both played the full 90 minutes.

Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) and James Maddison (£6.8m) featured as substitutes but should be fresh enough to remain in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester City XI (4-5-1): Ward; Fuchs, Maguire, Söyüncü, Simpson; Gray, Ndidi, Iborra (Albrighton 61′), Choudhury, Ghezzal (Maddison 53′); Iheanacho (Pereira 81′).

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Murić; Zinchenko, Otamendi, Garcia, Walker; Foden, Stones, De Bruyne (Gündogan 71′); Diaz (Sterling 66′), Aguero (Jesus 76′), Mahrez.

Hey guys, 4 of my starting XI are flagged and my bench is looking weak. Worth holding onto Kola or should I ship him this GW?

Got 1 FT, 0.4 itb and at a loss as to what I should do:

    Lossl/Hamer
    Doherty/Alonso/Robbo/Bennett/AWB
    Salah/Rich/F.Anderson/Fraser/Amartey
    Jimenez/Kane/Auba

No City cover and no Hazard. Seems stupid to get rid of Kane with the fixtures he has after Everton, same with Salah who is home to Newcastle after Wolves.

Guys, what move looks better this GW, really can’t decide:

    Fab
    Keane-Alonso-Robbo
    Hazard-Richa-Fanderson-Bilva-Fraser
    Auba-Kane(!)
    Subs: Foster-Doherty-AWB-Kamara
    1FT, 0,6m INB

    A) Kane+Bilva to Sterling+Rondon for -4, next GW Rondon to Jimenez
    B) Kane+Richa to Sterling+Rondon for -4, next GW Rondon to Jimenez
    C) Kane+Bilva to Sterling+Rashford for -4
    D) Kane+Bilva to Sterling+Ings for -4
    E) Save FT

I have WC to play after next GW (19)

Live BPS, can't look up simple stats eg, ppm. I can go on, but they should design the app in a manner that users can have a similar experience using their app as they do on their website. I shouldn't have to pull up the FPL website in my browser on my phone when I have the app, yet I find myself needing to.

The app should be a 'one-stop-shop' without compromises.

      I have Siggy.
Most probably binning him this week. To get WH attack.
But will get richa back after 1,2 gws by downgrading laca.
Siggy is playing very deep now a days.
Richa gets very good goal scoring opportunities too

He only played deep last match because Gueye was injured.

I also want Richarlison but it will probably be a straight swap from Siggy to Rich.

If I get a Whu mid this week I won’t be able to own Rich. Have Sane, Sterling, Haz & Pereyra in my midfield who I don’t want to sell right now.

Alonso's goal threat is still there. His shot this weekend hitting the wood work was a good hint to keep him for his fruitful fixtures.

Maybe downgrade Wilson if you need funds.

That's a tough call. You won't be able to do a straight swap that's for sure. To upgrade to Hazard you'll need to lose a big hitter up front, or ditch both Wilson and Alonso for cheaper options.

Jiminez ings rondon seem good options. I have Wilson also and just monitoring for now but don't like his next two fixtures after Brighton

If Wilson is out then makes it easier to get rid of fraser

Would you rather have 3 or 4 '5.0+' defenders?

Yes if 2 of them are Digne & Doherty 😉
Both are wingers getting CS points.
Digne bit unlucky not to get attacking points recently. But gets into dangerous positions.

Personally, three is ideal with AWB and Alonso. Looking to have Alonso - TAA - Digne - Johnny (maybe Shaw) - AWB in the near future.

Nope. Not concerned as an owner. Had him since GW3 and he's been ticking along all season just fine.

I really want to do Maddison to Snodgrass for a -4. Do you think I can cover the hit?

    TAA* - Digne - Kolasinac* - Schindler - AWB

    2 free transfers.

    or
    B) TAA + Kolasinac to Doherty + Holebas

Why sell B Silva ? He is starting regularly and was rested yesterday ? I was thinking of bringing him in because he ticks over nicely for just 7.5 mill

Is it better to sell Richarlison?
I will use WC after GW 19, where I can get him back.

B Silva has started so many games, wasn’t in the squad yesterday either so is a sure starter on the weekend.

Everton play Spurs so a tough game, so if you are Wild Carding anyway maybe sell Richarlison

I would prefer Kane and B Silva to Sterling and Rondon though

          Good luck 🙂

    Fab (Pat)
    Laporte Robertson Schindler (AWB, Bennet)
    Sterling Hazard Anderson Rich (Kenedy)
    Kane Jimenez Wilson

Got 1ft, and I am thinking of downgrading Kane to make the super switch Kenedy to Sane. My midfield would be amazing! Good moves or just keep Kane?
