Southampton and Leicester unchanged for Gameweek 10 opener

Both Southampton and Leicester have named unchanged sides for their Friday night clash at St. Mary’s Stadium.

That will be welcoming news for those in possession of Jamie Vardy (£9.1m), James Maddison (£7.2m) and Ricardo Pereira (£6.2m), the three most popular players in the first game of Gameweek 10.

It is the midfield option who will have the most attention from Fantasy Premier League managers, currently sat in 14.3% of squads.

Pereira is owned by 11.7% and while 11.5% are hoping from more attacking returns from Vardy.

Leicester remain without a clean sheet away from home this season so Fantasy managers are probably more expectant about Fantasy points at the other end of the pitch tonight.

That said, Vardy has scored in just one away match in 2019/20.

Gameweek 10 could see some improvement from Leicester’s attacking prospects on the road though, considering Southampton’s leaky defence at home this season.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side has conceded 10 goals across their four matches in front of their own fans since Gameweek 1, an average of 2.5 per game.

The Saints’ boss has stuck with the same defence as last time out though, lining them up in a back-three with wing-backs.

Maya Yoshida (£4.4m), Jannik Vestergaard (£5.2m) and Jan Bednarek (£4.5m) anchor the side with Ryan Bertrand (£4.8m) and Yan Valery (£4.8m) on the flanks.

Up-front is a man who has been capturing plenty of attention recently in Danny Ings (£5.9m).

He has started the last three Gameweeks, scoring in each of them, and may enjoy playing against this Leicester defence as they still chase their first away clean sheet of the campaign.

Southampton XI (5-3-2): Gunn; Bertrand, Yoshida, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Valery; Ward-Prowse, Højbjerg, Romeu; Redmond; Ings.

Leicester XI (4-1-4-1): Schmeichel; Chilwell, Söyüncü, Evans, R Pereira; Ndidi; Pérez, Maddison, Tielemans, H Barnes; Vardy.

And I thought I was smart for putting Evans at the bench! Thought Southampton would have scored. At the very least I own Maddison. But huge party for Vardy, Chilwell and Perez owners. Well done guys

Leeson learned. Get Bertrand after his suspension. He is vital to the team. Without him, Southampton will lose in double digits.

Feel pretty crap tbh, just owning Maddison and benching Soyuncu.

Absolute rank killer of a game.

Maddison owners still ditching? I may as well - downgrade to fund Wilson to Vardy

Rank killer until the rest of the games are played. You can't win every week, much like Vardy the trick is consistency.

      Was ranked 32k before tonight.

I’ve got two free transfers and can do Wilson > Vardy in one. Just don’t know whether to ditch Auba or Wilson.

As today showed, Maddison probably won't be in the attacking regions of gameplay (left midfield of a 4-3-3).
I think having Barnes and Perez in the team means he has a slightly more central/defensive ball distributor role.
That said, he does take set pieces and can score/assist goals.
Gonna keep for now as it's hardly the worst £7.2 asset, but may sell later on...

Has to be put in perspective they were up against a rubbish opponent who lost a man early on. Southampton are the new Watford or Huddersfield

Maddison owners - wyd with him now? So tempted to just get rid despite the late goal. Seriously got 1 return from a 9-0 win?

He's still an okay pick. But not a hauler. Vardy was always the double digit guy.

They aren’t gonna win 9-0 every week. He scored the set piece he got and he’s much more likely to get such a chance in future weeks than Chilwell and Barnes being allowed to do whatever they want down the left.

Will see how the weekend plays out and what other issues arise but he's still a contender to be dropped, just because he played so deep. At over 7m I'm reluctant to be reliant on set pieces when Perez/Barnes/Tielemans are all cheaper and playing more advanced positions. For now I'm just going to enjoy the 8 points though 🙂
