FPL new signings: Sterling back on watchlist after Chelsea move

Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) is at his cheapest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) starting price since 2017/18.

The England winger should stand a better chance of more sustained game-time this season, too, after Chelsea snapped him up in a £47m move from Manchester City.

The 27-year-old becomes the Blues’ first major signing since they were taken over by a consortium led by Todd Boehly this summer.

Prior to his move, Sterling was sitting in just 3.8% of FPL squads. Can he now enter the thinking as a ‘cheaper’ third premium asset in our Fantasy teams?

We assess the new Chelsea winger in our Moving Target report.

Born in Jamaica, Sterling moved to London aged seven and was developed at Queens Park Rangers’ academy before Liverpool prised him away in February 2010.

The youngster made his debut against Wigan Athletic as a 17-year-old in March 2012 and went on to be given a prominent role in the team by Brendan Rodgers soon after. However, it was the latter half of 2013/14 when he kicked on, with a series of outstanding performances that helped Liverpool achieve a second-place finish in the Premier League.

Sterling played one more season on Merseyside before he opted for a fresh start at Man City in the summer of 2015, where he has spent the last seven seasons.

Joining for an initial £44m, he went on to score 131 goals in 339 games, winning four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and three League Cups.

Of those goals, 78 have been registered in 161 top-flight appearances over the last five seasons: only three players – Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Harry Kane (£11.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) – have been more prolific over that period.

Sterling scored 13 goals in 30 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, but he has undoubtedly slipped down the pecking order at City over the last few years, with his minutes slowly reduced and opportunities to influence the biggest games limited.

After playing 2,793 Premier League minutes in 2018/19, Sterling’s total has dropped year-on-year for the three seasons since, while forwards Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Julian Alvarez (£6.5m) have arrived at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

That perhaps suggests that Sterling is a declining force, but his expected goal (xG) data confirms he still has plenty to offer.

SeasonGoalsxGxG deltaMins per xG
2021/221314.41-1.41149.8

2017/181816.25+1.75160.6

The shot locations he roots out are also worth touching on: Sterling registered 13 efforts inside the six-yard box last season – only Diogo Jota (£9.0m) and Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) managed more – while his xG per shot of 0.23 meant than an average shot of his had a 23% chance of finding the net. For context, Son Heung-min (12.0m) and Salah’s tallies were 0.19 and 0.15 respectively.

It is worth noting, however, that while the quality of chances that fall his way are generally excellent, he isn’t quite a top-level finisher. Son, for example, has exceeded his xG tally by a combined +22.57 over the last five seasons; Sterling has overachieved by a mere +3.47.

Ha ha - I just posted a few minutes ago I feel like Sterling should be in my draft. I've got a new draft with Salah, Haaland, Jesus, Sterling, TAA and Cancelo. Leaves the defence a bit weaker than my other drafts though. But I'm getting hotter on Sterling by the hour!

Read the article - Raz has always outscored any and every Chelsea player. The wingbacks ought to put plenty chances on the plate from low crosses from the byline that City specialise in.

And - he's 2m cheaper than Son and KDB.

yes i've read it but in the last 3 years, Chelsea's total goalscore is about 30% lower than City so not sure if we can compare it like that and also I doubt he'll get the minutes with so many MF they can choose, but interesting to see how he fits in the team

He does besr considering. Helps with the possibility that this year you could have less 'essential' players and balance your squads in different ways that are just as viable with options like Raz, Kane, Son, Haaland, KdB, Jesus....

I’ll keep an eye on him but, if Mount stays on pens when Jorginho isn’t playing I reckon it enhances his appeal the most.

Sterling has consistently shown to be the best version of himself when playing off a proper centerforward - as when presenting England, for example. I'm not convinced at all that the projected Chelsea setup will suit him any better than what he had with City the past couple of seasons; Pep didn't just start benching him out of spite.

Who are people planning to captain first 5/8 gameweeks? Feel like this will ultimately decide if I go Kane or Haaland.

GWs 2 and 5 the only ones in the first 8 I'd see city as the optimal captain choice. But could see myself captain Kane over salah in 3, 6 and 8.

Reason I say 8 is I'm thinking of WC during international break and hopefully catch some TV increase.

GW2,3, and 5 sounds juicy for Haaland, and maybe also 8

i remember Haaland is on fire on the first five GWs last year with Dortmund. In the first game, he got 2G+3A against Frankfurt so yup I bet he'll hit the ground running with City as well

They could easily play the same formation. Why do all four of them have to start?

...because Sterling, Werner and Havertz cost about £180 million combined, and Mount is their little (over-rated) golden child.

And how much did Lukaku cost them? Werner and Havertz rotated plenty last season.

Keep playing Werner only because of how much he cost. Digging a hole...

I don't see why so many RMTs are considering Rashford from the start. I get his price is very attractive, but he's been an absolute wasteman the last couple years. If he does hit the ground running, it should be easy enough to get him in your squad unless you go threemium.

Something was said in the press about him 'feeling confident' and all the sudden people are hot on him again - surely that means absolutely nothing at all.

That's a bit of a myth, he's actually only had 1 bad season- last year, which the whole team did

The year before that he was on fire until he got injuries towards the end and was played through them, even then he still continued to get returns

Last season was so bad however that we should be wary whether he can get back to normal but if Ronaldo leaves and at that price there's no real risk in having him

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years

Yesterday's friendly showed that he along with Martial and all the team have the right attitude. Even unfit, they were pressing and looking aggressive. That's half the battle. Rashford scuffed a few chances, showing he's not match fit. After a couple more friendlies we should see if he looks ready for the start of the season or not.

Liverpool didn't teach us anything - they were just fulfilling their commercial obligation like Spurs tonight. But I don't think we'd have seen that spark in a Rangnik team.

Well if that’s what we’re looking for, Plange is only 0.8% owned and plays for Palace, so no useful City/Spurs slots taken up and no risk of price drops.

Not safe from the drop either, as the gravity affects those with the lowest ownership the hardest - i.e. they will drop even if no one sold them.

The template is so strong that even the people posting non template teams have like 9/11 template players

And there’s no chance the majority of the people posting ‘non-template’ teams actually go with them when it matters and there’s actually football to be played. They’re just having a bit of fun while it’s still weeks away.

Yeah I know I'm just pointing out that even the non template teams seem full of template players, so the template is very strong

It comes down to something like …
                Sterling & Diaz
                or
                Salah & 5.0

I know who will win that one over 38 games by up to 100 points

then both owning Diaz and it’s still .. with the extra 3.0 mill …
                      Salah & 5.0
                      v
                      Sterling & Foden

Sterling with 3000 minutes I believe will match Salah with 250 ish points

So you think in a season where Sterling is one of the flagship players for a team hoping to make it deep into a winter World Cup, and playing FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League games, AND with the 5 subs rule, still plays the equivalent of over 33 of 38 full PL games?

he will get as many PL minutes as Salah imho

Well imo nowhere near as talismanic as Salah is after 5 seasons of consistently being one of the worlds best. Also don’t think he’ll be as prolific even if they do get the same minutes, worse finisher imho. Anyway, we all have our different opinions. Good luck!

Oh yeah, also forgot to mention that Salah isn’t going to the WC, so will have less minutes in his legs.

neither Watkins nor Neto are going anywhere near my team with Jesus & Johnson and 8.0 mill mid options available, or even JWP, H Wilson, D Brooks etc

Then something is probably wrong with your setup. Even with a BB side, I had no 5m mids with 6.5 being the cheapest.

Sterling could be a great alternative to Salah & Son this season, beauty about this is there are lots of 8 to 8.5m mids to accompany him. Diaz and Sterling.

Keep looking at Salah, Haaland & Kane, but it goes back to the same question:

                    A - Tomiyasu + Kane (5-3-2)
                    B - Diaz + Jesus (4-4-2)
