International Women’s Day 2024: Inspire Inclusion

A few years ago I wrote an article for International Women’s Day. In it, I talked about the total contrast in experiences of me going to Spurs as a child and sitting in the stands there now.

Before I would look around me and see very few female faces amongst the crowd. Now I look around and see thousands of women. Women coming to games with their friends, partners and family, and bringing their sons and daughters to the ‘World Famous Home of the Spurs’.

The absolute pleasure that it brings me to take both my children to games and watch them have equal experiences is immeasurable.

Back when I wrote that article the theme was ‘Embrace Equity.’ It was about women and men having equity as well as equality.

Inspire Inclusion

This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is ‘Inspire Inclusion’. When I read this year’s theme, it made me realise just how far we have come in the years since I wrote that article. Back then it was all about having equal opportunities for my son and daughter, giving them access to the same experiences. Allowing them to know that they both belong equally in all sporting settings if that is where they want to be.

Now I still feel the importance of that, more and more every day in fact, as my children grow older. However, now they know that they have a right to be there. Now it’s about elevating women and girls’ participation and achievement in sport and inspiring them to feel it is their place. This comes in all areas of the beautiful game as well as across all sports.

Education

Last term, Evie came home from school and proudly told me that she and her class were learning about podcasts. They were being taught how to write, produce and market their own content. The day after, when I picked her up from school, her teacher asked to see me. She told me that during the lesson, Evie had shared with the class that ‘Mummy makes podcasts’ and she had explained that I make one for the Premier League as well as FPL Family and Fantasy Football Scout. Her teacher asked if I would like to help with the children’s learning and whether it was ok for them to listen to our pods in lessons. Of course, I was more than happy to do this. At that moment, I realised how lucky I was. Every day I get to do a job that I love. I make podcasts and produce videos and article content for some of the biggest organisations in football, with some of the best people in the game. I have always been really proud of how far I have come since standing in a classroom teaching history all those years ago. But that moment made me realise that I have made my children proud, too. I have, without realising, helped them to stop seeing ceilings and see all careers and all the things that they want to do as achievable.

I normally shy away from taking credit for things, preferring to tell the world that I am just part of a big team doing something great. That’s 100% true. But with my children, I have inspired them to believe in themselves and each other. Inclusion for them is normal; Mum working in what was historically a male-dominated world is not something that they realise.

In fact, in the FPL Pod, I have Kelly Somers there, too, so they hear two female voices. They believe football is for everyone and it is. I want to make sure that is a message that spans not just my family, but the wider community. Inspiring girls to take on the equality that previous generations have been fighting for and dive head first into all sports and, even broader still, all areas of life that they want to. They have choices, so let’s inspire that inclusion for the next generation.

Football is a beautiful game. FPL is just as beautiful. It doesn’t matter where you live, the background you come from, the language you speak, how old you are, the colour of your skin or how you define yourself. It is a game that can in many ways lead the charge for inspiring inclusion.

Let’s keep smashing those glass ceilings.

If the women are good enough in a field, there is no problem. Sam is one of the best in FPL regardless of gender in predominately male dominated industry. It is fast becoming an industry full of chancers and bluffers at this stage. So Sam stands out because of her intelligence, delivery and integrity, she never manufacturers a "furore" for clicks as many in FPL do. Again, not naming any names.

But it is when women who are poor/average FPL content creators are hanging off associations and contacts with high profile male presenters, that is when it can start to look daft.

What I mean is parrot someone else's work/state the obvious and their only selling point is their female gender. I won't name any names. But in my view it then devalues the good work people like Sam does. However, Sam would be far too nice to say so though.

Good to make a strong criticism of women and their ability to do stuff on International Women’s Day.

That's you being part of the problem in my opinion. You either have completely misunderstood my post or are being deliberately obtuse.
Are you willing to hype up poor FPL content creator's simply by virtue of their gender?
Or have good FPL content creator's like Sam earn their place like anyone else.
It is your attitude and people like that is actually holding women back in my opinion. Women don't jobs just because they are women, they get jobs because they qualified to do so as simple as that.

I would argue that the whole "glass ceiling" analogy is somewhat a myth. As that is mainly caused by women who take career breaks to rear children and cannot afford childcare costs and so on. In this day and age it is more of a class divide between the women themselves rather than anything else.
For instance how many content FPL creators regardless of gender would be classed as from a working class background Granville back in the day. Most are educated and middle class, probably many privately educated.
When Gender is taken to consideration with children having to factored in. It becomes even less likely you see a working class woman in an FPL podcast role.

I’m a bit strapped for time right now. Perhaps we can continue this debate on gender (and class) equality another time?

Unbelievable post. This is a huge part of why women and those from minorities have to work harder than straight white men to get recognised. Constantly being told they only got a role because of their status.

As if a load of FPL “experts” aren’t totally useless men. Most of them are. The women have to prove themselves time and again to people like yourself even if they’re good.

In summary the issue is much more complex than Gender, it is to do with level of education, socio economic background, and for FPL knowledge of or interest in football. In order for people to succeed regardless of gender. A person who gets involved in FPL to make a living have to have the drive to keep making content, and make themselves relevant
I don't mind who the gender the person is as long as they are not blatantly chancing their arm in FPL, and if the quality is good like Sam,
But cannot deny there are a number of chancers in FPL content creating charging for "advice" etc and in general just giving poor fare reading off spreadsheets and stats. Giving general comment with no real insight/knowledge
To say that is no female FPL people who are being pushed forward simply because of their associations with "higher profile"male content creators, and because of their female gender is a falsehood. There is some really poor female content creators pushing themsleves forward, that are being used more as a gimmick by the male content creators than anything else.

But as I said Sam is a standout FPL content creator regardless of gender, and her standard should be something all content creators regardless of gender aspire to achieve.

It is professional guessing when all is said and done. But if done in a certain style/gravitas and humour it can be entertaining, in fairness.

What a brilliant article. It's nice and refreshing to read something different on here. FPL is even more male-dominated than professional football and it takes guts as a woman to put yourself out there and give your opinion on football when you know a small minority will treat that opinion with disdain no matter what ... Especially with idiots like Joey Barton around. Great work, well done, Sam. I'd like to see scout publish more content like this.

Also great how popular women's football has been become, thanks in no small part to the lioness's success. It's mixed in with the main BBC football page now and the recent NLD was sold out (even scout's own Pras went!)

Ah no I don’t see it like this, it’s in the featured box and it was top of site on a hugely busy day for FPL news ahead of a double gameweek. The Scout team are incredible supporters of everything I do and I am grateful to each and everyone of them. But I really appreciate your support here because I know that if Neale could leave it top all day and have multiple stories there he would.

Here are discussions on the "glass ceiling" term that is used in the article above.

    https://youtu.be/oPayitFmijw?si=jVep9Azi3GbwZxog&t=240

    Helena Cronin:

    https://www.edge.org/conversation/helena_cronin-helena-cronin-on-extinction
" Why is it always men at the top? The highest positions and prizes, whether influence or income, heads of state, CEOs, professors, Nobel laureates. Why? Because for women there’s a glass ceiling; for men, there’s a glass elevator. "Well," you might be thinking, "isn’t that conventional wisdom true? Isn’t the evidence compelling?" No. Nonsense.

Thank you. It’s wholly misconceived. It’s both ignorant of modern science, and it’s fighting battles that have already been won. Before I explain to you about that, I’ve got two caveats. One is about averages. We’ll be comparing averages, not differences, between individuals. Try not to think in individuals, but about differences between groups. Specifically, how characteristics are distributed differently in the two groups—males and females."
