Misfiring heavy hitters, first dates, hip-hop and goalkeeper troubles were amongst this week’s eclectic collection of hot topics. Luckily our community writers and regulars were on hand with key advice, offering some key names to consider for the captaincy and some dubious dating advice. Our Members tables look at the best and worst team performances while we also bring you news from our community tournaments, both new and long-established.

The Community Articles

Team form so far came under The Sarjeant’s gaze this week as he looks at the best performers as well as a key player set for an upturn in fortunes over the coming weeks.

Full-backs have certainly been enjoying some strong form, according to Innsie’s look at baseline bonus allocation so far in Fantasy Premier League. For this he has stripped away Bonus Point System points for goals, assists and clean sheets to reveal the best all-round defenders.

Elsewhere, Your Mum’s Athletic dropped by with his Gameweek 5 predictions based on bookies odds and Rodellegabomb cast his eye over three of the week’s most interesting bandwagons.

Finally, The3rdTurd spent the week constructing some quite breath-taking graphs in his Members-only community article looking at radars and bubbles within players’ underlying statistics.

Congratulations to Jarvish for being named by you as the best community writer in August, for his two forward thinking articles, looking at how to get the best out of double Gameweeks, chips, wildcards and the FA Cup calendar. He wins a £20 Amazon voucher.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Amongst the key conundrums ahead of Gameweek 5 is where to place the captaincy armband, particularly with so many heavy hitters misfiring in recent weeks. For those keeping faith in their premium picks, Ludo was on hand to compare the merits of two leading contenders, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez, as well as assess how Aguero performs without David Silva, in light of the Man City midfielder’s absence through injury this weekend.

Later in the week, Ludo also turned his attention to goalkeeper form, with the conclusion that playing away to a tough side can sometimes be a blessing in disguise.

There was further armband advice this week from Rhino, in his captaincy strategy discussion, although one player that is unlikely to find any suitors is Wayne Rooney. Despite becoming England’s top goal scorer this week, many in our community believe the United skipper no longer has what it takes to lead the line for club or country.

Wakey, however, is keeping the faith and has selected him for his Gameweek 5 Falling Stars XI, where entry is only for those players whose price has dipped since Gameweek 1.

On this week’s Scoutcast Mark revealed he is considering playing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL)’s All Out Attack chip this week due to the lack of potential clean sheets. But Ryan believes that Gameweek 38, when clean sheets are historically in short supply, could be a better time to use this chip. There was further discussion on chips, including some tales from those who have used them already, in our hot topic on these added extras in FPL.

Aleksandar Kolarov’s recent potent attacking displays  could be another reason for holding onto the All out Attack chip, as the Manchester City left back is arguably performing like a midfielder anyway. In our article on the longevity of the current bandwagons, Dootlitte was amongst those quick to take me to task for my assessment of the Serbian’s abilities.

Rhysybball took fan mail to new levels this week with his pitch perfect Eminem themed ode to Granville. With 229 votes at the time of writing, this is already amongst our most popular posts of all time. Dush64 kindly took on the role of Dido after I declined to attempt an impression of the singer on the Scoutcast this week.

Finally, the smooth operators among the community were out in full force to offer some top dating tips Fantasy Football style to Your Mum’s Athletic as he prepared for a first date. Let’s hope he treated our advice – which included asking your date about captaincy and wildcard strategies – with caution.

The Members Tables

The top attacking teams are the subject of thedabin’s latest Members table. Other notable tables to keep an eye on include my goals imminent one which focuses on attackers who have yet to deliver on very strong underlying stats. Elsewhere, Doosra’s Dodgy defences table offers a handy insight into the weakest backlines for those still pondering who to captain.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Following Gameweek 4 Mr Robot leads the way in @OCProdigy’s Scout Picks Challenge, which is based around our own Scout Picks. He is closely followed by Konig Luther, TM245 and Balders who are all joint second.

The group draw for Jaffalicious’s FFS UEFA Champions League has now been made. To find out which is the group of death and which will be a breeze visit here.

Balders brought us news of an American-style play offs competition he is launching, with qualifying getting underway from Gameweek 6.  There is another new tournament in the offing, this time organised by Jarvish and aimed at helping to halt those international break blues over the season.

Meanwhile, Niclas Andersson is the man to beat in the Top 10K Any Season league, which is run by Redlightning. He sits at the summit on 224 points. Niclas also leads the FFS Old Farts Club, the Long and Winding Road main league and is third in the FFS Members League.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Question of the day but hoping it may help others with their decision.

If I decide to replace Silva on a FT:

    KDB or Sterling?

    KDB
+ May occupy central role and perhaps be on set pieces
+ Players normally play well on their debuts
    + Low own % (Currently 1.2%)
    - Not certain he will start and/or go 90 mins
    - May need a game or two to adjust to new teammates

    Sterling
+ Seems like the safer choice as he is nailed
+ Form - 1G 1A last two games may indicate he is adjusting to his new club
+ Great matchup this weekend. Going up against a 2nd string RFB (Kelly/Mariappa) since Ward is out.
    - Playing on the wing may diminish his goal threat
    - Yaya's stats are better and both are currently the same price
    - Not convinced on his finishing ability

Any other pros and cons you can think of?

If you had to choose, which would you pick and one quick reason why?

This is Sako, he of eight shots on target in two weeks. Don't worry about it. City are not impenetrable and I can see Pardew really going for it in this match

He gave Chelsea a lesson 😉 and I'm pretty sure City will concede this weekend

Like Cpt Peacock said, most shots on target than any mid and nearly all strikers is quite impressive given he has only played two games

Damn used transfer in Wilson (and benefitted by 0.2) but now see flags against Silva and Diouf. Transfer Silva out for -4? Bench is Sinclair, Morgan, Richards.

Every week, City have produced a clean sheet and Gomis has produced a goal. People act like these trends will keep continuing every week, which is impossible. I think this is the week that both those trends end, against a good attacking team in Palace and a good defensive team in Watford, respectively.

    1. The Enlightener
      • 12 Years

No way to forecast, really. Just have to sit back and see how it all plays out. I would give a good chance to both scenarios repeating themselves. Probably more so than not.

Only thing I know is that I wasn't going to transfer Gomis or Kolarov out, so I have to hope they keep shining. Based on their play so far, it's hard to go all out saying they couldn't get similar returns. Sure, there will be blanks here and there. As with every player.

Yes, it was put on a silver platter for him. He also failed to score one after he made a nice run because he has no left foot.

In the end, what happened last week is irrelevant. This game is about predicting the next outcome.

Kinda a straw man argument. Of course Gomis won't score every week, and man city won't have a shut out each week, but they are two prime examples of in form players / teams, with decent fixtures, who are producing consistently, and gaining in value. As long as they, on average, out produce their competitors on an aggregate basis, they are pretty good options.

      1. Captain Peacock
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 3 months ago

I never said they weren't good options. Now who is bringing a straw man argument?

I have a City defender and am looking to bring in Gomis soon. They are certainly in form. But some here think they're certain bets, when such streaks must come to an end eventually. This week is a good chance for both ending.

That is the likely scenario. In a sport whre the average number of goals per game equals about 2, it is far more likely that a given player won't score every game. I think the more important question, given that we have limited trades, is who to have on your team for several weeks, instead of just one week. If you disagree with fanboys saying Gomis will score every week, and man city will have a clean sheet every week, including this week, I think most, including myself, would agree.

            • 11 Years

Certainly, we see eye to eye there then. Gomis is a fantastic option who should keep up scoring in games to come. The mentality amongst some people here baffles me though.

I don't really get your point. Whether those trends continue this week or not it simply makes sense to have a City defender in your team and if you already have Gomis it would be moronic to sell now. City and Swansea are the league's form teams along with Palace.

I would agree that you didn't understand my point. I did not advocate selling Gomis or a City defender. I simply said that it's moronic to expect these trends to continue each and every week, though some here give the impression that they do. The corollary is that there's no need to rush to get them in for this week in my opinion.

Aguero's away stats aren't as good as his home stats. If you're expecting a hatrick- forget it.

If you don't have Sanchez it's an easy decision imo. Mahrez looks like a decent option but with the masses captaining Kun it's safer to go that route.

Folks, appreciate some more thoughts - thanks for replies earlier

    A) Bellerin/Monreal + Lovren

    B) Skrtel + Dawson/McAuley

Want a Liverpool defender for their following 2 games against Villa and Norwich - though will probably sit on the bench this GW.

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years
      10 years, 3 months ago

Probably B) with Evans mate.. Chester played GW 1 at RB and he could well play either that position or as CB when fully fit. Evans looks safe

If you are sure about his gametime, go for it. I cant really predict who is going to be starters, they had a well organised defense for last couple of weeks. So changing that doesn't make sense but Pulis might change, as majority of them think.

            • 12 Years

Dawson probably safe for now then. Intending to double up come GW9, so if Evans looks nailed on I will downgrade Skrtel to him - no biggie. Thanks Holmes.

As much as this can easily go wrong, I think I'm sticking with Sanhez. Sagna and silva out, juve midweek and away fixture... Stoke not great at the back, Sanchez' stats and home fixture have me on Sanhez' side

    But Kun is Kun!

    Damn this is hard

So with Silva injured i'm benching him. Who to play instead?

            their 3 goals:

            Own Goal vs Spurs
            Janujaz against Villa.
            Mata against Swansea.

I would argue Liverpool are defensively stronger than the above teams. Utd don't look like scoring!!!

    Current team

    Ruddy, Butland
    Kolo, Cedric, Huth, Francis, Richards
    Silva, Mahrez, Ayew, Payet, Mane
    Pelle, Wison, Kun

Given the Silva injury, debating the following..

    1) Start Pelle 3-4-3
    2) Start Francis, bench Pelle 4-4-2
    2) Silva->Sanchez, KDB or Pedro for -4
