The Community Round Up

After 38 often gruelling Gameweeks, the Fantasy Football community waves goodbye to the 2017/18 season and starts preparing for the next campaign.

The Hot Topic posters look back on the key events over the last few months and start to consider which players will help earn us a flying start when the new season kicks off in August.

The success and failures of the Premier League prediction business come under scrutiny in our community article section, which as usual features the latest developments in Norwegian top-flight Fantasy game, Elitserien.

Our community tournament round-up is extended this week as we congratulate the winners across a range of leagues, cups and competitions.

The Community Articles.

Armed with a season’s worth of crowd canvassing, Hutch_James delivered his final look at how groupthink fared in terms of predicting results this season.

The underlying statistics kings of the campaign are the focus of FPL Virgin’s latest article.

But while domestic action may be over Mr Klin of Norway served up a reminder that Norwegian game Fantasy Eliteserien is available to play throughout the summer with his latest weekly preview.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The 2017/18 ended in dramatic fashion with 31 goals scored on the final day. Our “rough with the smooth” collection of your Gameweek 38 scores reveals how this action-packed 90 minutes impacted on the community’s overall ranks and quest for mini-league glory.

Stat also dropped by to reveal how this year’s rank milestones compare to last season, while Red Lightning looked at the end of season chip strategy of FPL’s top players.

Discussions also took place on how the best FPL managers across a number of seasons are defined.

Our own Hall of Fame update revealed the top managers from our leagues as well as some of their key strategies for success this season. While Zan Keroski let us know about an alternative way of measuring career achievements, with a stronger focus on more recent ranks.

FPL Freddo added further thoughts to this debate, while former Hall of Fame top ten manager Triggerlips launched his own ‘haul of fame’ which rewards multiple top 1,000 finishes, even if they were some time ago.

Triggerlips was in fine form this week with two further Hot Topics, looking at the effect of the Triple Captain chip and whether anyone had a worst best Gameweek than him.

The 2017/18 campaign came under further scrutiny when we quizzed you on your most impactful decisions made over the season. Swinner added to the discussion by asking what defines a successful season, a good rank or beating a rival.

Fusen also waded in to let us know that he has bolstered his FPL Statistico season review tool to include a section that divides up the season in stages.

Elsewhere, this campaign’s most successful formations were the focus of The Mighty Hippo’s latest Hot Topic, while Legomane pondered the importance of a great start.

Ignoring Mohamed Salah for the captaincy was perhaps one of the more obvious oversights at times this season. Given the Liverpool winger has just accrued the largest points haul in Fantasy Premier League history a price hike seems inevitable. But, we asked, how much is too much to pay for the Egyptian record breaker.

This week’s chat also featured plenty of forward thinking as managers started scouting for the 2018/19 Berbinho’s Forehead, Giggs Boson and Asquishypotato all canvassed opinion on a number of clubs as they asked how Manchester United, Spurs and Liverpool can build and improve next season.

Champions Manchester City are one team who can perhaps relax their summer activity in the market, with Fantasy Gold predicting that they could dominate the Premier League for years to come.

Meanwhile, Grooveymatt65 has already started bargain hunting with his discussion on next season’s potential cut-price gems.

Among them could be teenage sensation Ryan Sessegnon, who may well be playing top flight football in 2018/19 should his Fulham side prevail in the play-off finals against Aston Villa. Fantasy Gold urges Fantasy managers to keep a close eye on the England Under 21s international.

England’s senior squad for the World Cup, which was announced this week, came under scrutiny in Giggs Boson’s Hot Topic, in which he asked the community to name the best starting XI from this group.

The World Cup chat continued with FFFrog’s number crunching post.

Back to domestic matters, the potential reclassification of some midfielders and forwards next season gets discussed in a post from Aarono23, while discussion on potential rule changes is the focus of Scoutcaster Az’s Hot Topic, where he asks whether FPL’s assist and bonus awards, as well as chips, need an overhaul.

Az earns a further mention after scooping an award for his appearances on our weekly podcast, which picked up a raft of other accolades this week.

With no Premier League action until August Niemi recommends Fantasy managers turn to Norway’s Eliteserien to fill the gap. He has set up a new league, which started scoring this week and also put forward a list of key players to consider.

Niemi’s hard work has been duly noted by community manager Geoff, who let us know that our Norwegian football expert has joined his expanding crew of moderators, with community regular Zoumasbloomers also joining the team.

A raft of new community features are planned over the summer, many of which will be based on feedback collected by Geoff this week. We also asked what improvements Members would like to the tools available to them.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Community Tournaments

Congratulations to Gregor, who has won 2017/18’s Scout Picks community champion competition. His 33 point margin of victory, achieved in Gameweek 5, proved unbeatable. He wins a £100 Amazon voucher and a place in next season’s moderators and contributors league.

Gameweek 38’s community champion Choppers 13 lost 89-74 to the Scouts.

A score of 74 was enough to secure Az first in the FFScout moderators and contributors league, six points ahead of second-placed Jack Wain.

I snatched the summit from QPR Utd in his own FFS Frequent Summer Posters league by transfers made (42 to 45), while Dan Jeffries wins the FFS Old Farts Club league for the site’s elder statesmen and women.

Epic Fail has won Gnu’s Wigan to Me head to head contest. However, he missed out on top spot to me in the Dugout draft leg of Teddy’s Iron man competition, in which Paul Brett scooped first in the FPL Draft element.

Sticking with FPL Draft, our fixture ticker guru Pure Olivia claims bragging rights at the top of the FFScout moderators and contributors league.

In Red Lightning’s competitions, Anders Lium has won his Top 10K Any Season league, Shirin Nizar grabs the January to May league crown, Balders takes top spot in his Doubles, Blanks and Chips mini league and Stuart Blakely scoops his Opening Day contest.

Grant Barclay won Az’s £20 cash league, beating the contest’s host by one point. Meanwhile, TimothyJ, who comfortably won Az’s £5 cash league, finishing with an overall rank of 238.

If you are running a community tournament for the World Cup and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Nah man. The game started as soon as the 23man rosters were announced.

Additionally, the sing ups were available since 13th of May, a month before it started.

I can't see any solution to the bonus system that would ever keep everyone happy, but if I had my way it would simply be that top 3 in each game get 1 bonus each. This would slightly reduce variance and stop random performances scoring 3 when it doesn't seem deserved.

There could a caveat where, for example, if the top player is 20+ above second (or something), they get a second bonus point. So (54, 32, 31, 31) would be 2, 1, 1, 1 for example. Could this work? Would it be more fair?

    1. diesel001
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 11 months ago

Depends on what you want to reward. Personally think GKs, defenders and defensive midfielders are under rewarded in the bonus system, except when they keep clean sheets. Whereas attacking midfielders are too highly rewarded. It is possible that you win 2-1, but your best performer may be a GK because they may a couple of big saves that kept the scoreline at 2-1 rather than 2-2 / 2-3.

The only solution to make the bonus system fair and to stop the statistical vs man in the stand argument is to just scrap bonuses altogether.

I like the old dartboard system tbh

Sometimes there are match winning moments on a pitch players don't get credit for in the stats

for e.g, a defender clearing the ball from the line in the last second of the game and his team goes on to win 1-0

That's basically a match winning moment an individual needs bonus for

Other wise there is games where a central mid can run the show but not get goals or assists

Either way we need the baps in the game. A mix of dartboard and stats gets my vote

            5 years, 11 months ago

I think they showed enough promise at the back end of the season that they could score like 9m+ players. Both could potentially play up front. Zaha missed a chunk of the season injured, and Arnie wasn't bothered under Bilic. A proper full season and they could fly. 2 of the first names I'll look for when player prices come out. They'd be nailed in my team under 8m.

      2. Nascimento
        • 8 Years

It's about future output though. Arnie wasn't as attractive until part way through the season. If he'd played the position he'd finished in (and the position he'll probably start this season in) the whole season his output would have been greater. They have to exercise prudence.

In the case of Zaha I don't really agree with it but it's still what I think they'll do off the back of his reputation. He's been made famous by Man Utd and attention through diving really but all the same he's in the limelight.

A bit off topic for a FF forum but this may be of interest to the younger brethren on here (us old dogs have long since been wise to it) Every time there's a major Royal occasion, we commoners are gifted free money by way of a topically named racehorse on that particular day. Tomorrow it's According To Harry (7/2) in the 3.25 at Bangor. The RP Verdict on this race is as follows...

"This is a drop in class for ACCORDING TO HARRY (nap), who didn't run badly at Ludlow last month and looks well handicapped".

    Thank me tomorrow!

it´s difficult to judge cb´s nowadays because the system or set up the play in plays a significant role in how they "look", i´m not sure Tarkowski would have been much better than Stones if he played for City, he is not fast and he is not comfortable with ball. In Burnley he plays with a five man midfield which tightens spaces both in front of him and the deep lying defence leaves little space behind him, that gives the cb a whole different job than the one in City/Liverpool etc, who has to deal with both space in front and sometimes also a great deal of space to cover behind but also out wide sometimes. Smalling and Cahill plays in teams that actually, despite beeing top teams plays with more shields in front of them and seldom has to deal with spaces behind them, on those rare occasions it occurs both of them shows weaknesess, Cahill is quite adept in dealing with one on one situations, but has no speed, Smalling is faster but does not posses great skills one on one.

I guess Southgate picks the cb he thinks best suited to at three back line and he favours ball playing ones. I´m not overly impressed by any of the english cb´s none of them are particularly good, they all seem to be decent but with one or two many flaws. If you could get me one cb that combines Maguire, Gomez and Cahill then you´d the cb of worldclass

Is anyone playing Telegraph Fantasy World Cup?

Me, too. If you're clever enough, it's not out of the realm of possibility that you can win.

I remember during the Euros that people were using their transfers very creatively in the limited fixtures to fly up the rankings.

Yeah I find tournament FF rewards those who plan best more than FPL because of how transfers and subs work.

I was 1st in the world after the group stages in the last world cup game (ended up 14th and just missed out on prizes 🙁 ) and there were quite a few of us up near the top. So it's definitely possible for someone from here to win it

I've just been tinkering with the Telegraph Fantasy World Cup game. It's pretty darn good. Can FFS get behind it?

      Thank you.

    FA Cup final memories

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What has been your favourite FA Cup final? Is it far in the mists of time? Or have there been any good recent finals?

Has the competition losts its edge so much that is it now an irrelevance? Even the royal family are happy to stage a wedding on the same day.

Has its move to later in the day hindered it?

Let us know your thoughts about this once special day in the football calendar.

Not fantasy football related as such, but off season so a little leeway allowed I reckon. At least its about football not oven rings! 🙂

      Liverpool* 3-3 WHU.

Although Cantona's goal v Liverpool seems etched in my memory. Another final is Owen's brace v Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium.

I don't think its lost it's edge at all. Football players, fans etc. go on about winning trophies and so should be grateful for the opportunity as there is only a small amount of silver ware available.

Great one this. I've loads as this used to be my only access to live football.

Brighton vs United stands out. Real David vs Goliath which they built up and it delivered brilliantly (in the first match). I remember the fatigue in the players over the last ten minutes in particular - both teams literally out on their feet when Smith missed that chance late on.

Was also lucky enough to be at Wembley for Coventry v Spurs (my Dad got tickets through the FA as he was a non-league secretary) which was another underdog final, this time ending in victory for the minnow. Being behind Houchen's diving header was just incredible that day.

My childhood memories of the final were of a series of TV shows prior to the match all themed to the football. Like Question of Sport but also silly programmes like No 73 on Saturday morning. It was a pure day of celebration for the FA Cup Final and just whipped me up to such excitement before the match itself.

Yeah, you must be my generation Pumpkin because that's exactly how I feel. Nostalgic but a little sad that those days and the feelings they provoked are gone. Shame my kids won't experience that or understand - it's all too glossy now.

My favourite memory is from playing the TFF fantasy game. It includes the FA Cup games as well as the premier league. It was great fun packing your team with 11 players from the 2 finalist teams and using the last of your transfers. It would really shake things up in the league as well. Doosra will tell you.

Probably 91 for me spurs 2 forest 1...

Although most memorable ( and Slouch will like this) was 87 where we lost 3 -2 to Coventry and Keith Houchen scored that diving header. I actually cried that day but everything about it sticks out. This is where Harry Enfields " loadsa moneey" phrase took off too.

The magic died when the premiere league took over. Not the same any more for me. I'm stuck in the past and I can't get out

Heh, see above I was at both finals. The Coventry one was just brilliant. And I think I actually did cry (certainly inside) when Forest lost to Spurs. The Gazza challenge on Charles was right in front of me that day and if you watch it back it's a miracle it wasn't a red - injury saved him and Stewart came on to replace him and was the best player on the pitch.

🙂 Yer agree with that it was an awful challenge . I felt sick at the time , I loved Gazza ( although Chrissy Waddle is my all time hero) . Paul Stewart had an absolute stormer. He was a good player.

I guess you had to live our generation to appreciate it. I've heard a few say the early 80s were the best times and a mate of mine raves about the 81 final being the all time best but I didn't witness it.i just don't see me in 20 years looking back at now as being memorable. Maybe it's a childhhod nostalgia thing like you say

I don't think it's pure nostalgia. I think some sporting events/periods are genuinely special.

For example the summer with the 2005 Ashes series is stuck in my mind as an amazing summer spent watching cricket, there was so much tension and excitement, it felt like everyone was watching and following it. That hasnt happened even in recent ones that we've won.

I do think football is at risk of losing popularity in the UK though. Simply as fewer people are able to watch it. But I am seeing a slight trend if more people going to non league and lower league football. I think there's an honesty to it people are missing in the PL.

I've watched the Coventry Spurs game a few month back and it was a classic even now so yes I agree it's not all nostalgia . I do live in the past for some strange reason though 😆

Agreed with the last bit. They were saying on talk sport the other day the next move in the next few years will be towards a European Super league....I sincerely hope not

Same you're not alone! Utd in the 80's weren't much good but I still love that team. Robson, Whiteside, Hughes, McGrath, etc, and 80's music. Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac.. 🙂

Being a relative spring chicken I don't think there's been many great ones I remember watching live. Liverpool - West Ham stands out. As single moments go that Gerrard goal was incredible. I also don't think I've ever celebrated a non Fulham/England goal as much as when Wigan scored Vs Man City. It was a beautiful footballing moment.

I'm def stuck in the 80s and the build up on tv and then the game.
Ricky Villa replay goal in 82.
Brighton missing that open goal and Wilkins curler in the replay.
      Whiteside curler vs Everton 85.
Rush goal when the shot knocked over the camera in the net to complete the double.
      Coventry 87.
      Wimbledon 88 Aldridge missed pen.
Liverpool beat Everton again in 89 Rush twice after returning from Juve.

My first ever real memory of cup final day was in 1981. I was round at my mate's house and the Scottish Cup and FA Cup finals were both being shown at the same time on different channels. My pal's dad was a huge Rangers fan (Rangers vs. Dundee Utd) so we were watching that match mostly, but kept switching over the see the score in the FA Cup final (Spurs vs. Man City). I remember that both games ended in a draw, which in those days resulted in a replay.

I watched all of the FA cup reply and that match, with Hoddle, Ossi, Ricki Villa etc. all playing convinced my young self to make Spurs my "second team".

First FA Cup final I watched was Spurs versus Coventry, great game.
Favourite memory was Cantona's late winner versus Liverpool, I don't care how crap the game was winning was all that mattered that day.

Struggling to think of one to be honest. Newcastle’s successive appearances were underwhelming to say the least. I find it hard to care about the actual match when it isn’t my team involved. That said I miss the whole build up they used to give it on TV with Question of Sport specials etc.

I suppose the most memorable for me is probably the 2001 FA Cup final as I got home just in time to catch the end following the first night/morning with the woman who would later become my wife.

Not a final, but my favourite match of all time is the '99 semi-final replay against Arsenal. I don't think anything will ever top that; it truly had everything. Two historic teams at the peak of their rivalry, brilliant goals, red cards, disallowed offside goals, last minute penalty save, and Ryan Giggs' chest hair.

      Simply glorious.

I don't think it's irrelevant. Yes it isn't on the prestige level of a Champions League or Premier League these days, but it's a comfortable third and a great way to wrap up the season.

Roberto Di Matteo's goal 42 seconds into the 1997 Chelsea v Middlesbrough final. Put Chelsea on its way to our first trophy in almost 30 years and I won £75 from a £5 first goalscorer bet (my first ever bet)!

I would say the Giggsy goal when he outmuscled Vieira and went on to dribble about 40 yards past 3 - 4 players before netting and removing his shirt in celebration. Iconic. Think we had Ji-sun Park and Rafael as our mids at the time too.

Coventry fan so 87 obviously stands out.
An incredible day (and a brutal weekend!! Didn't get back to work until Tuesday).
But just think the cup finals of the 80s in particular where just much better games - very attacking and open. Also it was just a much bigger event back then. TV coverage would start about 8-9 in the morning and go on all day.
