One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), is back with his first column of 2020/21. Tom looks at lessons learned from last season, Chelsea’s exciting options and the newly promoted clubs.

With the Premier League full fixture schedule set to be released no later than Friday, it’s time to get those notepads out and start planning.

I’ve got to admit, I’m looking forward to getting back into a more familiar routine in terms of Gameweek deadlines. The relentless nature of Project Restart meant it was hard to keep pace and it’s fair to say that it didn’t suit my playing style at all. There was no time to think, and for those of you who have watched my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, you’ll know how much I value time.

So, how did the 2019/20 season end?

Well, it wasn’t a bad campaign at all, but was somewhat short of where I want to be, finishing with an overall rank of 16,668 – 17 points off my top 10k target.

Why did I fail? Having run a bit of analysis over the last week, I keep coming back to one thing. No, it wasn’t owning Theo Walcott (£6.0m) for three Gameweeks back in November (!), it was chip strategy following the restart, which went like this:

Gameweek 30+ – Free Hit
Gameweek 33+ – Wildcard
Gameweek 34+ – Bench Boost

Had I gone down the Gameweek 30+ Bench Boost route like many did, I’m pretty sure I’d be sat here with a ninth top 10k finish in the bag, but hey, that’s the way it goes sometimes.

I now sit 15th in the Career Hall of Fame, with my updated season history as follows:

Looking ahead to the new season, how good is it to see Mark Sutherns, a true legend of the game, back? With Lateriser and Zophar also offering insight on here, quite a team of contributors is being assembled. I’ll be back too, writing regular columns, plus Spot the Differential, with hopefully a few video appearances thrown in along the way.

As is usually the case during the off-season, Fantasy managers have a lot of time on their hands, and I’ve already seen quite a few strategy guides and threads popping up on social media; the kind of dos and don’ts of FPL. There is nothing wrong with it but to consistently achieve high ranks year in, year out, my advice would be don’t be too rigid and set in your ways – there is no rulebook. Be adaptable, be flexible and don’t be afraid to rip up plans at the last minute.

For sure, there are a few tried and trusted methods I try to stick to, like saving a free transfer whenever possible or holding onto my first Wildcard for as long as I can (early ones rarely work for me), but with one or two clubs possibly being given extra time off by the Premier League having reached the latter stages of European competition, these ideas may be completely redundant in a few weeks’ time – who knows what the new season will throw at us?

Another thing I touched upon in my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, was that it’s worth spending a bit of time now researching the newly promoted sides. Why? Well, you’ll find some solid, cheap picks, and possibly one or two misclassifications, like John Lundstram (£5.5m) and Keinan Davis (£4.5m) last season. Even if you don’t plan on starting with anyone from Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion or Fulham, get that knowledge in place now, so you’re ready to move quickly once the season kicks off.

I’ve also seen a couple of threads suggesting all of the above sides will be slow starters. It doesn’t matter – they can still deliver points, especially offensive players.

Aston Villa and Norwich City lost in Gameweek 1 last season, yet Teemu Pukki and John McGinn (£5.5m) still found the back of the net against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Then, in Gameweek 2, there was Lundstram and Pukki’s double-digit hauls, while Todd Cantwell and Jack Grealish (£7.0m) were also amongst the assists.

David and Neale’s recent articles are a good starting point, while Statsbomb, Stats Perform and All Stats Aren’t We have all written some really good stuff on Leeds.

It’s also worth listening to those in the community who watch their team’s week in, week out. There are plenty of good posters on the forum and on Twitter, so keep an eye on what they’re saying. I’m not saying blindly follow them (sometimes they get it wrong), but what you will get is a fan’s perspective on what is happening at a club, which can be useful.

In terms of transfers, it’s understandably been a bit of a slow window so far, but Chelsea’s new signings are firmly on my radar. Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) is at a peak age to excel, while Timo Werner (£9.5m) could be a steal and should settle quickly, as most Bundesliga imports do. Add in Christian Pulisic (£8.5m), and this team is going to be a lot of fun next season. If they can resolve their issues at the back, I think they could turn out to be the best of the rest behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

Talking of City, Ferran Torres (£7.0m) probably isn’t going to be an option from the off but looks like a decent dribbler with plenty of potential. He’s been playing as a right midfielder in a 4-4-2 at Valencia, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola uses him, and how he adapts to a more possession-based system.

Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) and Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) could be solid enablers too, but as is the case with everyone, fixtures will dictate whether or not they are genuine options.

Regarding motivation for the new season, I’ll leave this quote from ESPN reporter David Aldridge, which is taken from the superb Netflix documentary ‘The Last Dance’, and talks about ‘The Separator’ and Michael Jordan’s quest for three Championships in a row:

A lot of the people in that era, that you would consider Michael’s peers had won two in a row. Isiah had won two straight, Magic had won two straight… but, none of them had won three in a row. The third championship was the Separator. You win three and you’re on Mount Rushmore. So, for that team it was all about winning a third straight.

You can think of a sixth top 1k finish as my ‘Separator’ – let’s see if I can nail it.

Finally, there will be a lot of ‘noise’ out there over the next few weeks. All I’d say is don’t get too influenced by others, play your own game and most importantly, have some fun!

Thanks for reading…

Who, in your opinion, are the most under valued guys?

For me, has to be Foden, 6.5m is an absolute steal given his minutes and stats since project restart. Really like the Aguero and Werner prices also

    1. Miguel Sanchez

Greenwood for me, huge points for only 1000 mins play last time and now classed as a mid.

agree, getting a mid with brace potential in any game for 7.5m is a steal

Assuming KDB, Sterling, Aguero and Rodri take up the other 4/6 places, that means foden, Mahrez, Bilva, Torres, Gundogan and Jesus are competing for the other 2. A bit of a nightmarish pick at 6.5

      1. Ask Yourself

I think Aguero and Werner are incredible shouts too

Foden can play as winger and in mid and is 6.5 so worth the risk. Can always have a backup on bench as well for when he doesn't play. I think he doesn't come on when he doesn't start for the most part so with all this information he's a steal at 6.5.

So can Torres, Mahrez and Bilva though. If he doesn’t come on when he starts he would be a dream but this isn’t a rule

TAA and Robbo/VVD is pretty much locked for me as TAA EO ownership will be insane with his mispricing so doubling at the back will be the only way to really benefit from Pool CSs.

It's more of a case of Salah/Sterling/Auba for the second premium spot along with KDB. Currently on Sterling after looking back at the goal threat stats last season between City and Liverpool but could well change.

cool thanks, any love for Augero? lowest price he has ever been on fpl. If confirmed fit i can see him being over locked at managers focus on jamming premiums in midfield. I am not convinced pep trusts Jesus

            Lots of love here

I would quite possibly be following you had City made the final and Kun appeared. Now we won't have anything to go on. Seems unlikely City will find for any preseason games at all.

Vardy is my premium of choice before fixtures right now.

          2. Miguel Sanchez
            • 9 Years

I always love Aguero and do think he is a good price but he will likely be taken off at 60-70 mins more often than not for Jesus as the phasing out of the old guard continues. I do want one premium forward so I can reach the likes of Aguero but personally I am quite confident Werner starts well at Chelsea and having Aguero and Werner would be too much for me.

Struggling to decide whether cramming all the big hitting midfielders into my team is the thing to do, especially as it goes against my ideal for having a balanced squad. These are my boys for now.

Yeah I've gone for a more balanced team so forgoing a big midfield. Aubameyang is my preferred premium midfielder at the moment as I reckon he will play through the middle and could get about 30 goals.

I see. I still think Bertrand can be lowered to KWP without missing too much and then Digme can become Doherty. That's way you have an attacking defender still but with a more solid defemce. That's would still keep an even balance.

Seen a few people cautioning against a Soucek + Antonio double up but if they are the best options at their specific price points why does it matter if they play for the same team? Sure you will have weeks where West Ham don't score and they both blank but does that really matter if they are outscoring the other cheap options over a period of GWs?

One difficulty is WH are so unpredictable. If you want one out you're likely to want both when WH go on a losing run - quite a predictable scenario with them

          Agreed

And there’s really nothing in his price range as at now - no natural looking swap - certainly if you’re looking at a starter

I think it's down to where Antonio starts. If Moyes likes Haller enough I think he will be shoved out to the left wing. Still very attacking but not right through the middle and unlikely to get as many points as the run in. Still a great option at 6.5 though.

fixture dependent, something like this looks decent:

        4.5

        KDB Sterling Bruno Greenwood Soucek
        Antonio

Thoughts on a budget template? I started with the following:

    4.5, 4.5
    7.5, 6.5, 6.0, 4.5, 4.5
    12.0, 11.5, 10.5, 5.5, 4.5
    6.5, 6.0, 5.5

I think it allows for 0.5m to be moved between positions (e.g. I've taken Nyland at 4.0 as my second keeper to make my fifth mid Soucek at 5.0), and also allows you to move that 10.5 up front for Kane or Aguero.

      Initial draft:

      McCarthy (Nyland)
      TAA, VVD, Doherty (Saliba, Dallas)
      Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Saka (Soucek)
      Antonio, Mitro, Bamford

Latest draft is a bit of a punt

    Brighton GK’s

    Trent-vinagre-ayling-Ferguson- (Mitchell)

I think it is hes scored well for 3 seasons in a row and no one has a problem with Chelsea attack. Only the defence. With pens (possibly) and Ziyech as well I expect him to get a lot of chances so 9.5 is a snip.

When it comes in it will be great. How many times do you think all 3 will return for you? If it's less than they won't I would downgrade to 2 (Rash would be who I drop). GL.

I would envisage that at least 2 of them will deliver in most games. It doesn't actually matter anyway. What matters is the points they get overall and I see all of them getting a lot of points if they stay fit and don't get rotated too much. Really need to see the fixtures. Any tough sequences of fixtures may necessitate having only 2 or 1 of them.

Treble Leeds is a great budget enabler (especially if opening fixture is Newcastle).

    Meslier
    TAA, Ayling, Saliba, Vinagre
    Salah, Bruno, Klich, Ziyech, Auba
    Werner
    (bench = £17.0m)

Can get 4 x premiums plus TAA.
If you are concerned with double Leeds defence and no Man City you could do Ziyech & Ayling > Foden & Doherty.

Klich for me. He regularly gets in great attacking positions (in a very attacking side) and is on pens. Also I don't think Newcastle will score in GW1 if against super Leeds.

I am kinda planning to have Jimenez all season. He is easy to swap if needed to Ings or Werner. Also only like Antonio who is cheaper than Jimenez, andi must have at least 1 striker. Also have more options in mid, so prefer keeping that spot open

          1. Davido989

To be fair, Jimenez is usually a mainstay in teams for a while so can see where you're coming from. I just think comparing season totals is quite simplistic - we can make transfers at any time.

    1.Manchester City
    2.Liverpool
    3.Manchester United
    4.Chelsea
    5.Arsenal
    6.Tottenham
    7. Leicester / Wolves
    8.-II-
    9.Everton
    10.Leeds
    11.Sheffield United / Newcastle / Southampton / Crystal Palace/ West Ham
    12. -II-
    13. -II-

    16.Burnley / Brighton

Maybe I'm biased which is entirely probable, but unless City go out and make big signings, I'd be surprised if Liverpool don't retain the title.

Also, I think this is extremely harsh on Southampton. They have a fantastic manager, and got more points than Leicester since December iirc. They've signed highly rated CB in Salisu too.

This is the same City team that beat Liverpool the season before - the key is Laporte staying fit.

They lost the most influential figure at the club in Kompany.

They have now lost Sane and Dilva.

Laporte came back from injury and they still conceded stupid goals in relatively easy games.

          1. Greek Freak
            • 10 Years
            5 years, 3 months ago

Kompany didn't really play all that much the last year they won the title - wasn't it mostly Laporte and Otamendi? Also they played most of that season without KDB and still beat Liverpool.

(I'm not a Liverpool hater btw, I think it'll be close. I just believe that Laporte & whoever is enough for City to have a good enough defence.)

            1. Davido989
              • 15 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

Nope, Kompany came in and they won 14/14 to win the title by one point. He dragged them through games when their heads dropped, and scored the goal that effectively won them the title.

Laporte improves City no doubt but it's definitely overstated. The gap today is 20 odd points, and that's more than Laporte in my opinion. It's because Liverpool have different ways of winning, City have one.

It'll be a closer title race though, agreed.

Also dare I say Liverpool got a bit lucky?

Not lucky to win the title of course, but lucky to win it by such a huge margin. There were a lot of games where the team looked unconvincing and they ended up winning right at the very end (Villa game off the top of my head was the most obvious example). Now, of course winning games when you're not at your best is the mark of a great team. But it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a bit of regression there - a few more draws instead of those 1-0 and 2-1 wins - combined with City winning more of those games that they dominated.

            • 10 Years

think City/Liverpool is too close to call - but 15/8 is a great price really. You can actually back both and guarantee a profit if that's your thing, Chelsea/United nowhere near. Yeah Southampton could be decent again, I'd certainly have them over Everton and Leeds

City was also looking better than Liverpool at the restart. I think it will be closer than last year between the two but it's true that City needs 2 or 3 big signings. Southampton can reach no further than 8th-9th imo. I think 11th is okay for them.

Scoping out the next Ings/Jiminez is very difficult, naturally.

SHU top scorer across the season got 5 goals last year.

    Stop press

I have the news you've all been waiting for: Palace have a friendly on 5th September against Brondby 🙂

All behind closed doors so completely irrelevant. That of course may be completely relevant as all friendlies may follow a similar pattern

Two more friendlies yet to be scheduled.

    Any news from elsewhere?

My first detailed analysis of the player list and it looks like there is plenty of value in a few price brackets that people should be looking to have at least 1 slot

    (i) 10.5+ midfielders - the abundance of quality here should be maximised, 2 or even 3 slots are justified
(ii) 8.5 - 9.5 forwards - I think it is important to have a slot in your team for one of Jiminez, Ings, Martial or Werner - It will be very likely that one starts the season in good form
(iii) 5 - 5.5 midfielder - lots of value here, possibly even to be in starting 11. Identifying the right one will be important. Looking at Soucek, Armstrong, ASM

I think you can add in iv) 4.5 defenders, decent selection including some (attacking) full back options like Dallas, KWP, Taylor, Lamptey, Vinagre

ah yes, the problem here is the abundance of good options at 4.5. Can add C.taylor to that list too. Talk of Saliba too (though perhaps the start of season may be too soon). We should get a better idea closer to the season starting

I saw Saliba being included and looked into his starts, wasnt nailed on first choice for Saint Etienne so cant see how they throw a 19 yo into the prem. One to keep an eye on for sure but i dont think he will feature and fpl have priced him right

    Mo Salah or No Salah?

I can’t get my head around the 12.0m mids. KdB is a certainty, he’s at 70% ownership and undoubtably the most secure City asset. Fernandes has had 47 goal involvements in 48 club games up to the EL Quarter Final, so I guess that’s 48 in 49 now after last night! These two give you a secure home captain pick every week too. I can’t see where a 12.0m fits in?

Salah’s star has definitely faded. He’s not the greedy finisher he once was on debut, his wastefulness last season was shocking. Take out the pens and he’s on what 15-16 strikes? A long way short of his previous 30+ hauls. I’m going without I think, although there’s a great case to be made for Auba but it all looks too unbalanced to me...

I’ve gone budget keeper, Ryan/Button for the third season running, a playing 4.5m def and as cheap as you can go on the bench bar Soucek who looks a snip and offers a real option as an enabler in a 3-5-2.

    Thoughts?

I wasn't planning on getting all three before the prices came out, due to value/captaincy arguments etc.

But it's SO easy to make a strong team with those three and the likes of Werner and TAA and I just don't see why you wouldn't now.

have a look at Adams vs Ings (i'm serious), interesting stats last 4 games of last season, if Adams can nail a spot which i think he can vs Long then that could be some saving

Also, for a non mo team, i like the defensive double up. As everyone will have TAA, its a way to make ground on the pool clean sheets and robbo will get plenty of attacking returns

I dont mind Ings and Taylor to Robbo and Adams is basically what i'm saying

I had Trent/Robbo all last season actually. Served me well. Just think there’s value in Laporte at 6.0m. I still might get VVD if I can squeeze the 0.5 from somewhere.

I don't care. He's in. He has the highest xG in the league. He's also on penalties for Liverpool (when Milner isn't playing which is most of the time) and his poor finishing if anything just suggests that he's going to improve on it.

That’s my point. I owned him all season and never really felt he delivered. Highest shot stats etc but only converts 10%. Two declining seasons which ever way you want to cut it. I think they’ve got his number now. No longer the surprise package.

        Is this legacy bias?

I’ve only been playing properly for 18 months. My first move that Xmas was to bin Mo for Mane. Absolutely no question which has been better value since then

I look at XG and stats but I also look at actual returns. Not having your experience I see a wasteful player for whom XG is a dangerous guide

Yes I have him in now but don’t see any certainty in holding him. Love him when on a roll otherwise happy to go without. Cheaper but still most expensive player in the game

        1. Greek Freak

The thing is, Salah has outperformed his xG (or matched it) consistently up until that last season. The question is whether you think last season was an aberration or the new norm as far as his finishing is concerned.

That’s where I just see things differently from you guys - I have a different frame of reference. My career started 1 Jan 2019 - what came before that means less to me. I remember him only as a fan not in FPL

This wasteful, riding on legacy player, has scored 233 points in a year where he played 2879 minutes compared to 3254 in the previous season.

He had 19 goals, 10 assists. The highest xG in the league because he also took the most shots in the league - 133 compared to the next highest which is 118 (by a forward). The next closest forward was KdB at 99.

The stats overwhelmingly support him being an elite fantasy asset with a singular focus on scoring goals. He also gets a few assists and fantasy assists along the way along with being a Liverpool player who can hoover up a bunch of clean sheet points as well.

            🙂

an elite fantasy asset is not the same as the elite fantasy asset.

I expect to hold him for a while at different points but don’t see evidence for holding him all season

Put another way I think FPL have got it right. Entering last season there was one other player in his general price bracket now there are 4 - justifiably so imo

He’s a good choice but not an inevitable choice now

I agree ultimately. I don't think he is essential or inevitable. And I don't think he will be in my team the entire season, but he will be in for the majority of it because the stats and history support it.

No, he's greedier than he's ever been, just not clinical anymore.

Even if he improves his finishing slightly, he is most likely to hit 20+ goals this season. Perfect captain option too and plays for a team that love to score. It's easy to take him out than to fit him in once the season begins unless you WC early or take multiple hits.

For me it all depends on fixtures. If he is the best captain option in at least 2 of the first 6 fixtures he's in. Otherwise I would probably choose one of Fernandes/Auba/Sterling. Frankly speaking for me all the premium players are good options - which one to choose I will probably decide judging by my captain options in coming fixtures.

Salah had an insane number of shots in the box, and he never passes if he has a chance to score himself. He's wasteful but it's a nightmare watching pool without him. Compared to other 12m assets he's underpriced.

It's KDB, Salah and Bruno for me, in that order. Sterling, Mane and Auba no thanks
