One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), is back with his first column of 2020/21. Tom looks at lessons learned from last season, Chelsea’s exciting options and the newly promoted clubs.

With the Premier League full fixture schedule set to be released no later than Friday, it’s time to get those notepads out and start planning.

I’ve got to admit, I’m looking forward to getting back into a more familiar routine in terms of Gameweek deadlines. The relentless nature of Project Restart meant it was hard to keep pace and it’s fair to say that it didn’t suit my playing style at all. There was no time to think, and for those of you who have watched my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, you’ll know how much I value time.

So, how did the 2019/20 season end?

Well, it wasn’t a bad campaign at all, but was somewhat short of where I want to be, finishing with an overall rank of 16,668 – 17 points off my top 10k target.

Why did I fail? Having run a bit of analysis over the last week, I keep coming back to one thing. No, it wasn’t owning Theo Walcott (£6.0m) for three Gameweeks back in November (!), it was chip strategy following the restart, which went like this:

Gameweek 30+ – Free Hit
Gameweek 33+ – Wildcard
Gameweek 34+ – Bench Boost

Had I gone down the Gameweek 30+ Bench Boost route like many did, I’m pretty sure I’d be sat here with a ninth top 10k finish in the bag, but hey, that’s the way it goes sometimes.

I now sit 15th in the Career Hall of Fame, with my updated season history as follows:

Looking ahead to the new season, how good is it to see Mark Sutherns, a true legend of the game, back? With Lateriser and Zophar also offering insight on here, quite a team of contributors is being assembled. I’ll be back too, writing regular columns, plus Spot the Differential, with hopefully a few video appearances thrown in along the way.

As is usually the case during the off-season, Fantasy managers have a lot of time on their hands, and I’ve already seen quite a few strategy guides and threads popping up on social media; the kind of dos and don’ts of FPL. There is nothing wrong with it but to consistently achieve high ranks year in, year out, my advice would be don’t be too rigid and set in your ways – there is no rulebook. Be adaptable, be flexible and don’t be afraid to rip up plans at the last minute.

For sure, there are a few tried and trusted methods I try to stick to, like saving a free transfer whenever possible or holding onto my first Wildcard for as long as I can (early ones rarely work for me), but with one or two clubs possibly being given extra time off by the Premier League having reached the latter stages of European competition, these ideas may be completely redundant in a few weeks’ time – who knows what the new season will throw at us?

Another thing I touched upon in my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, was that it’s worth spending a bit of time now researching the newly promoted sides. Why? Well, you’ll find some solid, cheap picks, and possibly one or two misclassifications, like John Lundstram (£5.5m) and Keinan Davis (£4.5m) last season. Even if you don’t plan on starting with anyone from Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion or Fulham, get that knowledge in place now, so you’re ready to move quickly once the season kicks off.

I’ve also seen a couple of threads suggesting all of the above sides will be slow starters. It doesn’t matter – they can still deliver points, especially offensive players.

Aston Villa and Norwich City lost in Gameweek 1 last season, yet Teemu Pukki and John McGinn (£5.5m) still found the back of the net against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Then, in Gameweek 2, there was Lundstram and Pukki’s double-digit hauls, while Todd Cantwell and Jack Grealish (£7.0m) were also amongst the assists.

David and Neale’s recent articles are a good starting point, while Statsbomb, Stats Perform and All Stats Aren’t We have all written some really good stuff on Leeds.

It’s also worth listening to those in the community who watch their team’s week in, week out. There are plenty of good posters on the forum and on Twitter, so keep an eye on what they’re saying. I’m not saying blindly follow them (sometimes they get it wrong), but what you will get is a fan’s perspective on what is happening at a club, which can be useful.

In terms of transfers, it’s understandably been a bit of a slow window so far, but Chelsea’s new signings are firmly on my radar. Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) is at a peak age to excel, while Timo Werner (£9.5m) could be a steal and should settle quickly, as most Bundesliga imports do. Add in Christian Pulisic (£8.5m), and this team is going to be a lot of fun next season. If they can resolve their issues at the back, I think they could turn out to be the best of the rest behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

Talking of City, Ferran Torres (£7.0m) probably isn’t going to be an option from the off but looks like a decent dribbler with plenty of potential. He’s been playing as a right midfielder in a 4-4-2 at Valencia, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola uses him, and how he adapts to a more possession-based system.

Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) and Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) could be solid enablers too, but as is the case with everyone, fixtures will dictate whether or not they are genuine options.

Regarding motivation for the new season, I’ll leave this quote from ESPN reporter David Aldridge, which is taken from the superb Netflix documentary ‘The Last Dance’, and talks about ‘The Separator’ and Michael Jordan’s quest for three Championships in a row:

A lot of the people in that era, that you would consider Michael’s peers had won two in a row. Isiah had won two straight, Magic had won two straight… but, none of them had won three in a row. The third championship was the Separator. You win three and you’re on Mount Rushmore. So, for that team it was all about winning a third straight.

You can think of a sixth top 1k finish as my ‘Separator’ – let’s see if I can nail it.

Finally, there will be a lot of ‘noise’ out there over the next few weeks. All I’d say is don’t get too influenced by others, play your own game and most importantly, have some fun!

Thanks for reading…

8 of my first XI don't depend on fixtures. The last three keep changing and would change when fixtures come out anyway, then change with transfers as the season progresses: 4.5 D, 6.5 to 8.5 mid, 6.5 ST

It's nice to settle on those 8 though... And the most important reasons for all these still remain: lockdown boredom + new FPL season excitement

I can understand to some extent sharing achievable draft teams, general thoughts etc, but asking A or B questions at this stage without fixtures is a bit much.

This is probably a dumb question but at what ownership point do you stop getting a green arrow unless you double up in defence?

For example owning TAA alone gets no green arrow, but double up does

obv depends on the teams above you and who they own. dont lose sleep. some players you should just own to keep up. Salah and Taa I reckon are two of those.

    2. Cok3y5murf
      • 9 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

If you're close to the top 10k and TAA's top 10k EO is 100% and you own TAA (uncaptained), it's a grey arrow.

    3. LAMELA_AND_CONSUELA
      • 8 Years

In case of defender at begining of the season (3-4) weeks it is simple when player ownership is over 49%. But later in the season owning of such player is just neccessity because you mitigate a risk of red arrows due when he delivers. However in case of defenders it will be rare siutation when they EO will be over 100% in top 10k because people don't capitan defender often. But maybe in this year this will change and people start to capitan TAA. Who knows:)

    4. Brosstan
      • 11 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

Depends on EO of the other defenders

For example TAA ownership 75% means you gain 25% on the field for a CS.
But other def ownerships offset this if you only have TAA.

If Robbo, VVD, Gomez and Alisson combined have more than 25% EO you no longer get a green arrow for the TAA cs. Also midfielder eo influence the red/green slightly because the 1p for CS

I think its not a problem to get the big hiters, you just got to figure out the cheap enablers.

So who are the best 4,5 defenders?

Any 4,0 defenders that's gonna be starters?

Best cheap third striker as bench fodder?

And also a 4th midfielder around 6-6,5 that's gonna be in you're starting eleven.

Many seems to go for ASM but i think this can be Almirons breakthrough season point wise. Also players like Trossard or Naby Keita has big chances to improve there score this season imo. What do you think?

I've seen both Az and Joe highlighting the tightening of the wording around cash leagues, with Az saying he won't be running his cash league any more and Joe saying he won't be running or taking part in a cash league.

Is this tightening of the wording a concern for those of you in or running cash leagues? Or is it just something that would concern FPL pundits who could be screwed over by some randomer reporting them?

Manchester City and Manchester United’s European exits have eased what threatened to be a major scheduling headache as the Premier League prepares to unveil next season’s fixture list on Friday.

Both clubs’ progress to the respective quarter- and semi-finals of the Champions League and Europa League ensured each would kick-off an already-congested 2020-21 campaign late after being promised a minimum 30 days off.

But their defeats to Lyon and Sevilla should mean they only miss the opening round of the season on the weekend of September 12.

Their failure to win their respective European competitions also means neither will play in the European Super Cup on September 24 and that City will not play in December’s Club World Cup.

Had City and United reached the finals of the Champions League and Europa League, they likely would have missed the second round of Premier League fixtures on the weekend of September 19, as well as the first.

Their exits have raised the prospect of them now kicking off their seasons the midweek of September 15/16, further easing subsequent fixture congestion and eliminating it altogether if they played each other.

But Telegraph Sport has been told United would prefer to have as long a break as possible and start their campaign a few days later.

It also appears unlikely the Premier League would want to schedule a Manchester derby so early in a season that is scheduled to begin behind closed doors due to the on-going coronavirus crisis.

Following the weekend’s results, the derby has potentially become the only fixture for which a slot would need to be found later in the campaign, something aided by the lack of involvement of either City or United in the Super Cup and Club World Cup.

The other two clubs still in Europe when the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers, are both set to start their own seasons on time.

Wolves – who have just completed a marathon 383-day campaign – had wanted themselves and Chelsea to be City and United’s opponents for the Manchester duo’s postponed opening-weekend matches so they themselves could have a longer break but that is not expected to happen.

Yes I'm aware that Leicester and Arsenal don't have a fixture that midweek, but Chelsea and Wolves who have had a shorter midseason as well would be the logical opponents if it was going to happen.

Son is a solid pick at a good price point. Maupay a no go unless we see more settled side from Potter. I’d go Mitrovic and Werner from the start and maybe switch to 442 and upgrade Maddison. He was extremely frustrating to own second half of last season. I lost 0.2 and a lot of rank by being patient with him, I wouldn’t recommend.

Experimenting with 2 Premium defenders, 3 premium mids and 1 premium forward. Let me know what you think

    Ryan - 4.0
    TAA - VVD - Vinagre - Taylor - Ferguson
Salah - KDB - Fernandes - Soucek - Onomah (need to research the 5.0 bracket)
    Werner - Wood - 4.5

This is my thinking too, and a very similar team. Also struggling with the 5.0 bracket in midfield.

      McCarthy, Nyland
      TAA, VVD, Vinagre, Saliba, Dallas
      Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Soucek, Jorginho
      Werner, Mitro, 4.5

Keep fiddling with those two midfield slots totalling 10m... a 5.5 coupled with a 4.5 might also work.

There seems to be a general consensus that TAA has been under-priced at 7.5m. Personally I'm really not sure why people were expecting prices of 8m+. Robertson still has the FPL record points total for a defender but he has never been priced over 7m so I'm not sure where the justification would have been to price TAA at 8m+. He should actually have been priced at 7m.

Yes it makes perfect sense. A player who can score 200+ pts at a price of 7.5m is definitely great value. I was just really making the point that bearing in mind the price points that the big hitting defenders normally come in at including Robertson who has the record pts and never been priced over 7m, TAA being 7.5 is arguably 0.5m over-priced.

No, he shouldn't. 7 and 7.5 are correct.

TAA didn't outscore Robbo purely because Liverpool kept fewer clean sheets this season (partly due to Alisson's early injury and partly due to complacency after winning the title early, both unlikely to happen again). 21 CS for Robbo 18/19, 14 CS for TAA 19/20. In terms of attacking returns, he outscored him comfortably, suggesting he's better value than Robbo 18/19.

      Did this already...

      He's definitely underpriced because:

      1. He hit a season high of 7.8m from a starting price of 8.0m with over 50% ownership.
      2. He was the highest scoring PLAYER in the game from GW17 until Liverpool won the league.
      3. He delivered over 200 points as a defender despite his team keeping just 15 clean sheets on the season
      4. In terms of points per pound, he absolutely dwarfs all the other players that got close to or above 200 points in the season.

      1. Davido989
        • 15 Years

All of this plus he did this while Adrian was in goal for a decent amount of games

      2. Greek Freak
        • 10 Years
        5 years, 3 months ago

He scored about the same as the season before when he started at 7.0. Therefore a 0.5 increase seems correct.

The team not keeping enough clean sheets can also be read as an argument against pricing him up more 😉 (obviously the lack of Alisson was a contributing factor, but I don't think the prices should be based on ifs and buts)

Prices are completely based on ifs and buts. FPL price their players based on how they think they might score. That's why Werner is more expensive than Ings.

Fact is, based on history and statistics, TAA is quite obviously underpriced compared to what he would be expected to deliver this season.

            • 10 Years

Are you expecting 250? Because that's pretty subjective. If you expect about 210-220 then 7.5 is fair.

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 7 Years

Removing the Adrian appearances, 230 points (without captaincy) last season would have been reasonable with 15 assists, 4 goals, 17 clean sheets with a few extra bonus points

              All within reach this season

              At 7.5m

            2. Camzy

              How is that fair?!?!

He's a defender who outscores other comparable defensive options by like 50 points.

If we were to be stricter about making points/pound actually matter, TAA would cost 10m. But there is a balance to be found because defenders are comparatively priced lower. 8.5m was the competitive price to put him at and even then, I think he'd have 20% ownership....

              1. Greek Freak
                • 10 Years
                5 years, 3 months ago

He's more expensive than the year before, which is why it's fair in my opinion. He's a defender as you said, so 8.5 would be ridiculous - FPL want to create a fun game, not something where people are priced out of their favourite players. Another season like this in the 210-220 range, then 8.0 could be realistic.

        2. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years
          5 years, 3 months ago

The prices ARE based on ifs and buts. If not, every player would have been priced exactly according to where they were ranked, but you have Ryan at 4.5 after scoring 19 more points than Pickford at 5.0 with the same clean sheets and 0 pen saves

Then KDB 0.5m cheaper than assets he scored 30 more points than in fewer minutes, including his teammate

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Typo - starting price of 7.0m. But in any case, 7.8m is closer to 8.0m than 7.5m.

He should have been 8.0m minimum. 8.5m would be the more competitive price.

None of those points represent a good argument for TAA being priced at 8m+ I'm afraid.

It's irrelevant how many clean sheets Liverpool kept and so is the amount of points TAA scored in any given time period. All that matters when setting a players price for next season is his total points tally as well as considering previous seasons performances and TAA didn't surpass Robertson's record. If Robertson was still priced at just 7m after setting the record and TAA has now scored less than that, how can you price him at 8m+? It wouldn't make sense.

There have been many big hitting defenders over the years of the likes of Baines, Vidic, Lescott, Terry etc but there has always been a price ceiling on them of 7-7.5m. It's just the way FPL price up defenders. I don't think there has ever been a defender priced at 8m.

They made Pablo Hernandez 6.0m, so not expecting him below that... Just feels too much for a promoted mid...

Doubt he will be the same price as Phillips and Grosicki. Sorry.

Making a team with Salah/Auba/KDB/Werner/TAA seems impossible...

    Auba > Bruno?

          4.5, 4.0
          TAA, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0
          Auba, Salah, KDB, ASM, Soucek
          Werner, Antonio, 4.5

i would go for Bruno instead of auba, but i may be slightly biased on that front as a man utd fan. Seems like a tough team to balance out but let me know if you do it.
Vinagre in defense and mitrovic in attack are good budget choices i reckon if you're trying to save money.

      You can do those 5.

      But no Fernandes.

It's doable but probably not advisable

      Ryan
      TAA, 2 x 4.5 rotation
      Salah, Auba, KDB, ASM, Soucek
      Werner, Mitro (4.5m)

is there a case for sterling over kdb?

I don't think so. KDB so involved and likely to be on pens. Massive risk to go without him.

yeh i thought so. Just want some differentials aha.

sterling's miss the other night is enough to make me question him

    2. Ze_Austin

Yes. But it involves some hopeful conjecture. KDB doesn't have to improve on anything to match his output last season, but Sterling has to improve on his assists and be more reliable as a captain. If this happens, Sterling can shoot towards 270 points. Problem is the IF

Depends on whether you think KDB was at his 'real' level or overperforming in front of goal last season. Because he definitely scored a lot more goals than he should have, even taking into account that great players do normally score more than they should.

problem for me is, with david silva going and foden stepping up, i can definitely see KDB dropping back in position slightly to cover for foden. Equally, with the signing of Ake i could see fernandinho making a return to CDM.
I think i'll opt for KDB for now though

KDB plays deeper sometimes but pretty much impossible to know which games that will happen in.

This sometimes happens when they’re away but rarely happens when they’re at home

KDB will likely outscored sterling over the whole season but for premium options what matters most is how they do when you captain them.

Kdb will likely score a lot more points than sterling against against the big 6, where you’ll likely not captain him.

Sterling is a confidence player so it is sometimes easy to predict when he’ll haul. It is much harder to predict when KDB will haul because he can play well without scoring or assisting and it is impossible to predict what matches they’ll win penalties in

      thanks guys...
not entirely conclusive but i think the safer bet is kdb.
we'll see how sterling performs i guess

I expect Sterling to bang in lots of hattricks. I am also expecting less Pep roulette as he wouldn't want to fall behind Pool too soon. I am going Raz. He surely won't have another "bad" season.

Going without TAA may be suicide, but thoughts on this slightly different/more balanced team?

    Ryan
    AWB Tierney Taylor
    Salah KDB Ziyech Foden ASM
    Werner Martial

    Button; Vinagre Bamford Ferguson

    1. Klaren
      • 8 Years

I don’t see the point of going with Bamford over a Liv defender even if not TAA when you aren’t planning to start Bamford.

      Boils down to:
      AWB, ASM, Bamford
      Or
      TAA, Soucek, Davis

I'd much rather have the second set. I think Soucek is better (or at least as good as) ASM; you're not not planning on playing Bamford, so might as well downgrade him; and TAA is miles better than AWB.
