Bowen and Fornals disappoint as Benrahma emerges at West Ham

WEST HAM 1-0 FULHAM

  • Goals: Tomas Souček (£4.9m)
  • Assists: Saïd Benrahma (£6.0m)
  • Penalty saves: Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m)
  • Penalty misses: Ademola Lookman (£5.0m)
  • Bonus points: Fabianski x3, Vladimir Coufal x2 (£4.5m), Soucek x1

TAKE A BOWEN

Most of West Ham’s attacking assets disappointed in their first match of an appealing fixture run as they beat Fulham 1-0 on Saturday evening.

Fantasy Premier League managers have been waiting for the Gameweek 8 fixture swing for some time, even a Michail Antonio (£6.2m) injury not putting off a wave of investment.

Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) and Pablo Fornals (£6.4m) picked up roughly 150,000 new owners between them but neither one particularly impressed even against Fulham’s poor defence.

Of the two, it was Bowen who came the closest to an attacking return, his powerful first-half effort from the edge of the box deflected and turned over by Alphonse Areola (£4.5m).

After that, the former Hull man did rack up a few more shots on goal, almost all of them from outside of the box. And, apart from his speculative efforts, Bowen struggled to get into the game.

The local press has somewhat critical of his performances recently, highlighting that they have been on the decline since the Gameweek 4 3-0 win at Leicester.

Meanwhile, the closest Fornals’ came to an attacking return was in the first half when he got round the back of left-back Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) and his cross was deflected into the path of Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) who fired a close-range effort straight at Areola.

Neither player was allowed to finish the game either, replaced by Saïd Benrahma (£6.0m) and Manuel Lanzini (£6.4m) in the 72nd minute.

While Bowen and Fornals’ owners are certainly likely to hold these assets for a plum Gameweek 9 trip to Sheffield United, who are still without a clean sheet this season, the fact that they looked so poor even against Fulham may be enough to put off further investment despite the favourable fixtures.

“I think it says a lot about the players, it is a change. We are not going to try and be flakey to lose the game, we are going to stick at it and try to not lose. I wouldn’t say it was ugly, we dominated the ball in the opening ten or 15 minutes we had chances but the last 20 we tried too. What we didn’t have was the ability to beat somebody until (after the substitutions).” – David Moyes

LATE D-RAHMA

However, it was not all doom and gloom for West Ham’s attackers against Fulham.

Tomas Souček (£4.9m) finally delivered on his positive underlying statistics and got his first goal of the campaign.

Unsurprisingly, the midfielder’s penalty area presence characterised his latest performance, putting him in the right place at the right time to slot past Areola in the closing stages.

Those looking to invest in West Ham’s fixtures should also have Benrahma on their minds too, as it was his persistent determination that breathed new life into the Hammers in the last 20 minutes – and he got the assist for the winner too.

Admittedly, it was Benrahma who gave away a stoppage-time penalty for a foul on Tom Cairney (£5.3m) but Moyes did not seem concerned about that at full-time.

All things considered, such a display may convince him to start Benrahma against Sheffield United, which could see one of Bowen or Fornals drop out of the side, although it is hard to predict that with any degree of certainty. Either way, Benrahma’s emergence is sure to be a little frustrating for Fantasy managers assessing who the most nailed-on starters in the West Ham midfield are outside of Souček.

“(Asked about Benrahma’s impact): I hope you have seen Fornals and Bowen’s class as well in recent weeks so we have got really good competition in those positions. Saïd is a really good player, I have had lots of players from the Championship that I don’t expect too much from too quickly. He had an impact in both boxes but thankfully it went well for us.” – David Moyes

HAMMER BLOW

There was mixed news for West Ham’s defensive potential in their 1-0 win over Fulham.

A third clean sheet of the season was, of course, welcome news for the 120,000+ managers who signed Aaron Cresswell (£5.1m), who was unfortunate not to come away with attacking returns on Saturday.

Fabian Balbuena (£4.4m) and Haller both saw efforts either saved or hit the crossbar from Cresswell’s corners in the opening exchange, and the left centre-back also had an effort denied by Areola too.

It was Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m) who top-scored among the FPL defenders though, taking home two bonus points for eight points. He now has 25 from five appearances now, averaging five points per game.

A reason for those extras against Fulham seems to have been his persistence in the cross, although the quality of his delivery did not live up to Cresswell’s, something even Moyes inferred at full-time.

“One small thing, I think our crossing tonight was terrible and our ability to get into positions like that, we didn’t do well enough. We either overhit it or hit the font man and that was one aspect but we thought we would have more of the ball, it panned out that way later in the game and we didn’t quite pass the ball well through the lines enough.” – David Moyes

As for long-term clean sheet potential, it was somewhat alarming to witness West Ham’s game management in the closing stages, especially after going 1-0 up.

They struggled to handle the driving runs of substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.9m) and looked likely to concede under Fulham’s attacking pressure. Of course, they would have done were it not for the fortuitous circumstances of Ademola Lookman‘s (£5.0m) awful penalty.

Meanwhile, Moyes will now be sweating on the fitness of Angelo Ogbonna (£4.9m), who picked up a muscle injury in the second half and has been the ever-present lynchpin in West Ham’s defence and could be missed sorely if his absence proves to be a long-term one.

“We’re a little bit worried about Angelo. Because it was a challenge in the box where I don’t think the player should have made the challenge on the goalkeeper and it has opened his groin up a bit so we’ll get him scanned and see what the outcome is.” – David Moyes

West Ham United XI (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna (Diop 63′), Balbuena; Masuaku, Souček, Rice, Coufal; Fornals (Benrahma 72′), Bowen (Lanzini 72′); Haller.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; A Robinson, Adarabioyo, Andersen, Aina; Reed, Zambo Anguissa (Cavaleiro 90+3′); Lookman, Cairney, De Cordova-Reid (Loftus-Cheek 83′); Mitrović.

The Ogbonna injury isn't nice, as a Coufal owner

Hoping Diop fits into the system well

Diop has the quality to be our best CB at the club in my opinion, he just needs to be a bit more ‘no nonsense’ rather than overplay like he’s been guilty of in the past.
He’s no stranger to first team action either so I can’t envisage there being an issue with him slotting straight in. Good luck.

KDB is arguably the best player in the prem, is the cornerstone of a very attacking team with a great upcoming schedule and is on penalties.

What player word you rather have in your team atm?

I agree he was great last year, and he never left my (poor) team. But he's not really consistently firing yet.
I went back to Salah and I've not seen a reason to drop him or Son yet.

The team looks like it needs a shake-up. Maybe if you stick with Bamford over Watkins, that could save a hit, but if you really want Watkins then go for it.

DGWs will come three GWs after the first WC expires

There's no midweek space until GW19

            • 4 Years
            3 years, 4 months ago

True, but this doesn't make WC16 a waste. You should be able to load up on the teams that have a game in hand to be made up, then sprinkle in a few other players who have good fixture runs around that time. Hopefully we'll know before GW16 which teams will have a BGW18 followed by DGW19 (some will just have two SGWs).

That's not to say you have to hold it, but you can benefit from holding it in a way you might not be able to in a year with no significant DGWs until March/April.

As per ZE_Austin comment above, I wouldn't be holding for DGWs. Wolves have Sou next and gw10 shows a shift in fixtures for them & City. City are hard to call at the mo, but with FTs you have the benefit of a wait & see. Don't rush it, wait till wc is right for your squad going forward

Ziyech has a flat cross which is very hard to defend against. KDB can do this but very players in the EPL can cross like Ziyech.

Teams that sit deep will likely get picked apart by this flat cross as we saw with Burnley and SUFC.
So against attacking teams he's likely to be less effective as he will have to defend more and have less time in the opposition box to cross.

Teams will also wise up to his crossing and probably put more effort into stopping him.
I don't see many teams up to Jan willing to sit deep against Chelsea.
I'm not sure about Newcastle but Arsenal and Villa are defensive however they don't play until the end of the year.

Obviously you'd expect Ziyech to get attacking returns but how many against attacking teams I don't know.

That's an interesting analyzis. Clearly he wasn't rushing upfront against SHU and would prefere to stay deep at the heart of the game construction. He has world class set pieces skills but his two latest displays make me think he fallis into the "set and forget" category rather than an explosive Werner/pulisic.

Porblem is that I like my set and forgets to be 100% nailed and I'm not sure anybody is in this chelsea team.

That's it we don't know how good his crossing is on the counter attack when under pressure. Frank might decide to attack more on the left.

I have seen players like him before in the premiership. They are not involved in almost every passage of play (as someone like KDB is) but when they are, they really do something incisive. Im thinking here more of a Cantona type player (though different style) in terms of his impact on the game.

Irrelevant to the analysis but a friend and I had crossed paths with him near their training ground where we both happened to stop and he came across as a great chap. We started in French, but switched to English as it's impeccable.

Bruno fixtures are good, not great, in my opinion. He's likely my captain this gameweek, but I have no confidence in United, having tripled up in their attack since GW2. Perhaps their are better targets, but he's not a bad choice, of course.

Kilman seems a bit of a sheep move though. What are you going to get out of him with those fixtures? Justin isn't nailed, Lamptey seems injury prone and Mitchell is injured and potentially a non-starter anyway, so I think you could look for a better option tbh

I don't think inconsistency/variability affects the probability of cleanies though. I'd run with your resoning if I was looking to rotate players from different teams based on form and/or fixtures, but at 5.1m, I think these players are going to be almost ever-present in my XI until sold. Changing one of them to a player from another team does nothing to improve the likelihood of that player slot getting a cleanie, unless the replacement player is actually more likely to get a cleanie, so the double-up isn't a factor in my understanding.

I get that you don't have confidence in the Arsenal defence though 🙂

Any advice always been near the top on FPL in my mini leagues but this year I am doing absolutely dreadful through no fault but my own. Silly decision and impatient transfers have left me around 2m ITW and 50-100 pts behind in my mini league. This is my current team.

    Martinez steer
    R.James cancelo coufal saiss mitchell
    Bruno salah Grealish J.rodriguez anguissa
    Kane maupay DCL

Any advice would be much appreciated

Not a lot wrong with that team, might want to change saiss or Mitchell in case Cancelo or James is dropped

My main advice is become a member and access all the data especially Captain Sensible etc.then you may climb the league more swiftly.
Secondly no need to be concerned yet 50-100 behind at this stage is nothing.
Team is ok by Maypay to Antonio if fit perhaps?

Cheers man, I’ll have a look, any other stats you’d suggest using? Maupay to Antonio already locked in once he’s back so you’ve confirmed my thoughts thanks

No not really apart from in the members area I do like the Captain Sensible weekly article for members only, with all the stats, plus goals imminent and assist imminent tables at great.. also if you have players you want to compare, you can compare all their stats which is great.. good luck!

Bamford still out in front in stats and points but villa have the form and fixtures

    So, pick one

    A. Bamford
    B. Watkins

B until gw12 then maybe go to bamford

Really fixtures prob wins it. And Villa are showing they have some resolve after 2 defeats. Watkins (and I own Bford)

Bamford - because I have Grealish

This, I think is the key factor in going Bamford over Watkins, Grealish plus Watkins might be overkill.

Bamford has scored very consistently so far, I have had to change my mind on him as an asset, also I think Leeds will create more chances for Bamford than Villa will for Watkins and Bamford seems to get tons of shots in the box, regardless of fixture. I could be wrong on this in terms of comparing their stats.

Im not totally decided yet but have shifted towards Bamford over Watkins at the moment.

    Ideas what to do here:

    Son to Bruno? Keep Robo?

    2FTs, 1.6ITB

    Martinez
    Robo/Reguilon/Chilwell
    Salah/Son/Hamez/Grealish
    Kane/DCL/Bamford

    Martin/Kilman/Mitchell/Stephens

You could go Son to Ziyech if feeling brave. To reduce your Spurs risk exposure entering a tough fixture run. You still maintain your exposure to them through Kane.

Cresswell still next best bet IMO. Assuming you have Chelsea.

Lads, should I use the international break and consider using my WC? What do you suggest for this lot?

    Mendy / Walton
    TAA / Lamptey / KWP / Dallas / Mitchell
Salah / Son / James Rodríguez / Grealish / Harrison
    Kane / DCL / Bamford

Names on my list are Ziyech, Werner, JWP, Watkins, + there's City fixtures... what do you say?

GW10 is better from a fixture swing perspective, then you can load up on City.

For this week, just do maybe Son -> Ziyech to get Chelsea if you have a FT.

Linda Parkes is the new leader of my Multiple Top 10k Finishes mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/473582/standings/c) (code: 8t42p6) for teams with two or more top 10,000 finishes and is 65,078th overall, two points ahead of Elias Kharma (@FPLMason, last week’s leader) and Antti Leppilampi. All looked good until I read the bench. You need v.g. first sub (Bissouma, Soucek, Riedewald, etc), decent 2nd sub and no-hoper. All 3 of them are no hopers 😉
