Bowen and Fornals disappoint as Benrahma emerges at West Ham

WEST HAM 1-0 FULHAM

  • Goals: Tomas Souček (£4.9m)
  • Assists: Saïd Benrahma (£6.0m)
  • Penalty saves: Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m)
  • Penalty misses: Ademola Lookman (£5.0m)
  • Bonus points: Fabianski x3, Vladimir Coufal x2 (£4.5m), Soucek x1

TAKE A BOWEN

Most of West Ham’s attacking assets disappointed in their first match of an appealing fixture run as they beat Fulham 1-0 on Saturday evening.

Fantasy Premier League managers have been waiting for the Gameweek 8 fixture swing for some time, even a Michail Antonio (£6.2m) injury not putting off a wave of investment.

Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) and Pablo Fornals (£6.4m) picked up roughly 150,000 new owners between them but neither one particularly impressed even against Fulham’s poor defence.

Of the two, it was Bowen who came the closest to an attacking return, his powerful first-half effort from the edge of the box deflected and turned over by Alphonse Areola (£4.5m).

After that, the former Hull man did rack up a few more shots on goal, almost all of them from outside of the box. And, apart from his speculative efforts, Bowen struggled to get into the game.

The local press has somewhat critical of his performances recently, highlighting that they have been on the decline since the Gameweek 4 3-0 win at Leicester.

Meanwhile, the closest Fornals’ came to an attacking return was in the first half when he got round the back of left-back Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) and his cross was deflected into the path of Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) who fired a close-range effort straight at Areola.

Neither player was allowed to finish the game either, replaced by Saïd Benrahma (£6.0m) and Manuel Lanzini (£6.4m) in the 72nd minute.

While Bowen and Fornals’ owners are certainly likely to hold these assets for a plum Gameweek 9 trip to Sheffield United, who are still without a clean sheet this season, the fact that they looked so poor even against Fulham may be enough to put off further investment despite the favourable fixtures.

“I think it says a lot about the players, it is a change. We are not going to try and be flakey to lose the game, we are going to stick at it and try to not lose. I wouldn’t say it was ugly, we dominated the ball in the opening ten or 15 minutes we had chances but the last 20 we tried too. What we didn’t have was the ability to beat somebody until (after the substitutions).” – David Moyes

LATE D-RAHMA

However, it was not all doom and gloom for West Ham’s attackers against Fulham.

Tomas Souček (£4.9m) finally delivered on his positive underlying statistics and got his first goal of the campaign.

Unsurprisingly, the midfielder’s penalty area presence characterised his latest performance, putting him in the right place at the right time to slot past Areola in the closing stages.

Those looking to invest in West Ham’s fixtures should also have Benrahma on their minds too, as it was his persistent determination that breathed new life into the Hammers in the last 20 minutes – and he got the assist for the winner too.

Admittedly, it was Benrahma who gave away a stoppage-time penalty for a foul on Tom Cairney (£5.3m) but Moyes did not seem concerned about that at full-time.

All things considered, such a display may convince him to start Benrahma against Sheffield United, which could see one of Bowen or Fornals drop out of the side, although it is hard to predict that with any degree of certainty. Either way, Benrahma’s emergence is sure to be a little frustrating for Fantasy managers assessing who the most nailed-on starters in the West Ham midfield are outside of Souček.

“(Asked about Benrahma’s impact): I hope you have seen Fornals and Bowen’s class as well in recent weeks so we have got really good competition in those positions. Saïd is a really good player, I have had lots of players from the Championship that I don’t expect too much from too quickly. He had an impact in both boxes but thankfully it went well for us.” – David Moyes

HAMMER BLOW

There was mixed news for West Ham’s defensive potential in their 1-0 win over Fulham.

A third clean sheet of the season was, of course, welcome news for the 120,000+ managers who signed Aaron Cresswell (£5.1m), who was unfortunate not to come away with attacking returns on Saturday.

Fabian Balbuena (£4.4m) and Haller both saw efforts either saved or hit the crossbar from Cresswell’s corners in the opening exchange, and the left centre-back also had an effort denied by Areola too.

It was Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m) who top-scored among the FPL defenders though, taking home two bonus points for eight points. He now has 25 from five appearances now, averaging five points per game.

A reason for those extras against Fulham seems to have been his persistence in the cross, although the quality of his delivery did not live up to Cresswell’s, something even Moyes inferred at full-time.

“One small thing, I think our crossing tonight was terrible and our ability to get into positions like that, we didn’t do well enough. We either overhit it or hit the font man and that was one aspect but we thought we would have more of the ball, it panned out that way later in the game and we didn’t quite pass the ball well through the lines enough.” – David Moyes

As for long-term clean sheet potential, it was somewhat alarming to witness West Ham’s game management in the closing stages, especially after going 1-0 up.

They struggled to handle the driving runs of substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.9m) and looked likely to concede under Fulham’s attacking pressure. Of course, they would have done were it not for the fortuitous circumstances of Ademola Lookman‘s (£5.0m) awful penalty.

Meanwhile, Moyes will now be sweating on the fitness of Angelo Ogbonna (£4.9m), who picked up a muscle injury in the second half and has been the ever-present lynchpin in West Ham’s defence and could be missed sorely if his absence proves to be a long-term one.

“We’re a little bit worried about Angelo. Because it was a challenge in the box where I don’t think the player should have made the challenge on the goalkeeper and it has opened his groin up a bit so we’ll get him scanned and see what the outcome is.” – David Moyes

West Ham United XI (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna (Diop 63′), Balbuena; Masuaku, Souček, Rice, Coufal; Fornals (Benrahma 72′), Bowen (Lanzini 72′); Haller.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; A Robinson, Adarabioyo, Andersen, Aina; Reed, Zambo Anguissa (Cavaleiro 90+3′); Lookman, Cairney, De Cordova-Reid (Loftus-Cheek 83′); Mitrović.

1 week punts before WC'ing in GW 10.

    Thinking- TAA -> Maguire + Son -> Fernandes (c) + Jimenez-> Richarlison (-4).

    Thoughts on these?
If I weren't WC'ing I'd prob go for Cancelo, Fernandes, Watkins.
    McCarthy.
    TAA, Chilwell, Mitchell.
    Son, Salah, Barkley, Podence.
    Kane, DCL, Jimenez.
    Button, Ayling, Justin, Bissouma.
    2fts, 1.8m ITB.

    1. Fernandes, Ziyech, Cancelo (Lamptey, Kilman and Masuaku rotating for 1 defender position)

    Or

    2. KDB, Ziyech, Balbuena/Dunn (latest probably bench fodder or rotating with Lamptey, Masuaku and Kilman for 2 positions in defence)

    What would you do?

    2.0 ITB, 2 FTs

    Martinez
    TAA Chilwell James (Justin, Mitchell)
    Salah Son Grealish Foden Podence
    Kane DCL (Brewster)

    Fires in order of priorty:
TAA (Out for up to 4 weeks, assume he misses 3 GWs and will drop 0.2)
Podence (Cannot stand owning for 60 minutes every week + Wolves are not wolves recently)
Foden (Rotation risk, despite good fixtures)
Mitchell (Can rot on the bench)
    Kane/Son (Bad fixtures)

    Players I want:
Bruno, Rashford (if fit), Cancelo, Rodriguez, Vardy, Digne

    A) TAA, Foden > Cancelo, Bruno (exact money, but means keeping double Spurs for 1 week. Could then go Kane > Vardy for GW10)
    B) TAA, Podence > Digne, Rodriguez
    C) Foden > Rodriguez (can wait)

Really don't want to be forced into moves before the international break...

Bruno fixtures: WBA, south, w.ham, CITY

Is he really the best Captain option this GW?

Bruno points are double figures away, not so good at home.

WBA looked a bit better defensively in their last 2 games.

The other 3 have been doing alright defensively.

Man U have been inconsistent & play CL midweek, so early transfer could backfire although that's obviously true of any team playing in Europe.

New v Chels (Werner, Ziyech, Pulisic whose gone on international duty)
Everton v Fulham (DCL, Rich, James)

Anybody else considering their WC over the IB? I usually play mine in December when the schedule turns rough but I have a few fires to fight and the IB is a traditionally good time to play it plus it is 1-2 GWs from December after the IB anyway.

It's a popular time to play it. More time to potentially increase team value.

It's also more fun to have 2 weeks to tinker.

I spunked mine early but had planned to play it over one of the international breaks for these reasons.

Obviously depends on your team, how many players you want / need to transfer out & in.

      Good luck with it. 🙂

I've got both & am a Chelsea fan & a big advocate of Ziyech however...

Everton have no CL so no risk of rotation & arguably have better fixtures for the next 3.

James is cheaper too & with injured/ suspended players returning will be back to full strength & play Fulham next.

      Tough call.

Big Fella: On Lamps sticking to his first 11....

I've said repeatedly on here I think he's nailed since the beginning & I agree on momentum he'll keep his place.

However he can't (well I don't think he will) play 90 minutes twice a week every week. CL / PL.

James is much more likely to play 90 mins in the PL without any European football. They both have international football do that a level playing field.

I hope Ziyech massively out performs James but in terms of this game & playing the odds, time on the pitch, fixtures, risk of rotation, coming off early I think it's close.

      Hence "tough call."

Do you think Ziyech will play 90 mins PL every week for the next 3?

I prefer to wait and then act with as much info as possible. Anything can happen. Not only to your own players, but to players in teams your players are up against. Or injuries to players you don't own that weaken or strengthen you players outlook, or bring into play bargain replacements. So many things can happen. Much easier to just adjust your plans slightly if a player you wanted is bumped up 0.1 or 0.2 then to predict all those other things

So I just found out I kind of messed up when I got Steer as my 4.0 goalkeeper on my early WC. Also got Martinez and Grealish from Villa. Now I can't bring in Watkins without using a stupid transfer on getting rid of Steer to make room for another player from Villa.

    Kane + Steer > Watkins + 4.0 (-4).

Is this stupid? I know my team is good enough to save FT and make these transfers next GW. But then I will miss price rise(s) on Watkins, his homegame against BHA and stuck with Kane against City. AND I already have other transfers planned, like upgrading Zaha and getting in Cancelo in defence using Kane money.

I know people in here is very negative when it comes to taking hit. But I usally end up on the plus side when I take hits (if not short term, then long term + TV).

    Interested in your opinions.

Personally I'm not hit adverse, the vast majority of the time I at least break even in the first GW & benefit from spending £0.1 less on getting them in & also the £0.1 increase in TV.

Like you say, just like the WC I don't just judge it on one GW anyway.

In the first 10 GWs my strategy was to be aggressive go early, take a few hits & build TV.

It does depend on the individual circumstances, with Villa long term fixture run I think it looks like a long term move that's more likely to pay off & mitigates the risk.

I'm less likely to take a hit for a 1 week punt though.

      Fortune favours the brave!

Good luck mate whatever you do. 🙂

Thank you for your good answer! Good luck mate. I just pulled the trigger on these two transfers. It's a little irritating using a transfer on my fodder GK, but that's how it had to be. I feel taking hits is a big part of the game. If you get this right, you will score more points and get higher TV. Not taking hits is of course the "easy" and safe way to play. Not to much to think about. Just do one transfer every GW, or save and do two the next.

I'm not against hits at all, but I definitely don't favour acting early in an international break, during a pandemic!

Have no problem understanding that. I admit this is a gamble.

      True.

I'm not saying it's cowardly to be hit adverse BTW in case you've misinterpreted what I've said.

Watching your planned target go up in price does take bravery to hold off until the following week when you have another FT & you're right about having all the information.

I'm conscious that chasing TV making early transfers can result in bad decisions that backfire.

Like I think I said it depends on the circumstances.

1 week punt unlikely, long term fixture swing mitigates the risk IMHO & the entry point of Brighton versus Kane v City is worth considering.

From a fun perspective making a transfer for a hit that pays off is rewarding & the extra £0.1 saved plus the additional £0.1 TV increase is like the icing on the cake.

      Good luck all. I'm off.

KDB i guess. But I've had him since gw3, and he's been disappointing, even when fit. Involved in most attacks. I guess I'd feel different if he CONVERTED THE EFFIN PENALTY. I'm so salty about. Could've just gotten Bruno earlier.

hmmmm they have nice fixtures KDB playing so deep
torres , sterling , foden has more chances to score but you know pep bench one and play the other , no one is safe

Cancelo for now. Need City to score more goals and show more before jumping on Sterling/KdB. Foden not playing enough. Jesus might lose his place soon

I think Son will do well in the tougher games as teams won't defend as much and he will have more space

    Mendy, Button
    Chilly, Reguilon, Coufal, Justin, 3.9
    Salah, Son, Ziyech, James, Grealish
    Kane, DCL, Brewster

What do you think about my team? Thinking of going Reguilon and Son to Cresswell and Bruno for a hit, would you do it?

Nothing between them. I put a lot of store in touches in the box...because it works. Have a look at this and then change the parameters to last four at home.

They both did well in the championship last season. There’s probably no correct answer on which one is better. Deciding factor should always be gut feel

Not too sure about those who sell son and kane. If you got two, donrmake sense to sell both. I see them scoring against manc though

This. And if you got both, and decide to sell one, it makes sense to sell them both. If you think Spurs will score alot the next 6, keep both. If you think they'll don't, sell both.

You are right on that one. I just sold Kane myself. Keeping Son for now, but my plan is to get rid of him also. But that might change.

    Son gone! Grealish finally in.

Steered clear of Bruno, don't like his fixtures over the next 4 & a £3.1mil difference enables me to get KDB back next week for Foden.

Not a popular view on here from what I've read but City's next 4+ fixtures after Spurs, with Aguero back is too good to ignore.

Fingers crossed Bruno Blanks! Come on you Baggies!
