How Man City’s key FPL assets fared ahead of Spurs’ fixture swing

Man City 1-1 Liverpool

  • Goals: Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m) | Mohamed Salah (£12.4m)
  • Assists: Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) | Sadio Mané (£12.0m)
  • Missed penalties: De Bruyne
  • Bonus points: Jesus x3, Salah x2, João Cancelo x1 (£5.4m)

CITIZEN OR KANE?

Fantasy Premier League managers may want to get another look at Manchester City’s attacking assets before pulling the trigger on a Gameweek 9 transfer.

Ahead of a swing of fixtures in Gameweek 10, Pep Guardiola’s men are still struggling to hit their exhilarating best this season, most recently in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

The last time they scored more than one goal in a Premier League match was the 5-2 home defeat to Leicester in Gameweek 2 which preceded a run of consecutive matches in which they found the net just once.

Despite threatening very little against Liverpool, Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), remains Manchester City’s highest-scoring Fantasy asset this season, with 33 points, but ranks as low as joint-43rd when compared against the entire player pool.

Such statistics are largely unheard-of during Guardiola’s tenure at Manchester City, who have now drawn three of their last five Premier League matches, as many as in their previous 70.

As a result, the Citizens do not look quite ready to command the full attention of Fantasy managers looking to replace Son Heung-min (£9.6m) or Harry Kane (£11.0m) when Spurs’ fixtures turn for the worst in Gameweek 9. Considering Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m) and Timo Werner (£9.4m) are showing some consistency as well as favourable fixtures of their own, Manchester City assets certainly need to improve soon.

JESUS AT THE CENTRE

Whether or not Manchester City can get back to the devastating attacking form we have come to know is likely to depend on Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m).

The Brazilian made a first start since Gameweek 2 on Sunday, slotting back into the void he left through injury, naturally fulfilling the role better than Sterling, Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and Mahrez have in his absence.

As a result, despite Liverpool’s attacking 4-2-3-1 formation, it was Manchester City who slightly edged their opponents in terms of looking the more dangerous outfit going forward.

That led to Jesus scoring an excellent goal on the turn and ensuring he has found the net in both of his Premier League starts this season.

Considering the price points of players Fantasy managers are likely to sell, it is certainly easier to replace Kane with Jesus than finding the money to upgrade Son to Sterling or Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m).

“He was really good. I didn’t expect he could sustain 90 minutes, but he did. He helped us. He made a fantastic goal – a good goal. It was a good result for him.” – Pep Guardiola

CANCELO BUTTON

JOTA THAT DOWN

Despite blanking against Manchester City, the long-term Fantasy credentials of Diogo Jota (£6.5m) were handed a boost on Sunday.

After scoring six goals in his four matches in all competitions previous to Gameweek 8, he has already attracted 8.5% but many of us have been reticent to secure the services of someone who is hardly a nailed-on starter at Liverpool.

In order to facilitate Jota in the team, Jurgen Klopp usually has to switch to 4-2-3-1 and station him on the right-hand side of attacking midfield, although this is a formation he has used sparingly in the calendar year of 2020.

But that could be about to change, when we consider the Liverpool manager has now set his team up with that shape in two of the last five matches in all competitions and has admitted that we could see it more often.

“When you can do it (start Salah, Mané, Firmino and Jota) against City then you can do it against other teams as well. It will not be our new, all-the-time [formation] but there are moments when we might use it. That’s very helpful for us. Usually, people know which system we play, that’s now water under the bridge. From now on we can play three or four different systems, which is good, and tonight it worked really well. We wanted to use the skills and the power of the four up-front in specific moments to cause City problems, that’s one thing. The other thing is that we all like to prepare a game in the way that we know exactly what the opponent is doing and Pep, I don’t think he knew we would play 4-4-2. It’s not important but it needed a while for City to adapt to it, that was the plan for today. We will not have used that the last time.” – Jurgen Klopp

Finally, there will be plenty of attention on the outcome of Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.4m) scan, following an enforced substitution at Manchester City.

“Trent will be out for England, that is clear. What he has, we don’t know, but he cannot play for England. He will not be the last and not the only one who Gareth [Southgate] will miss for this international break. He will have a scan tomorrow and then we will see.” – Jurgen Klopp

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte, Dias, Walker; Gündogan, Rodri; Sterling, De Bruyne, Torres (B Silva 61′); Jesus.

Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Robertson, Gomez, Matip, Alexander-Arnold (Milner 63′); Wijnaldum, J Henderson; Mané, Firmino (Shaqiri 59′), Jota; Salah.

Bottomed so I'm reposting hoping for some more replies.

Thoughts on these options.. have 2 FTs. Barnes and Jimmy players I want out of my team.. also could use Son funds to make moves

    A) Barnes -> Rashford, keep Jimmy for SOU and use 2FTs for City fixture swing the next GW
    B) Barnes + Jimmy + Son -> Bruno + JRod + Richa/DCL (-4)
    C) Barnes + Jimmy -> Bruno + Watkins
    D) Barnes + Son -> Bruno + Soucek/Bowen. Then use funds to upgrade Jimmy to Vardy/Jesus next week

    Input appreciated 🙂

I feel my opinions are starting to diverge quite a bit from the FFS consensus.

    A) I'm planning to keep Kane through thick and thin.

His form is too hot, hard to find good striker replacements - If he really goes off the boil I can buy any other forward including Aguero later if need be, but I have a feeling he will continue to get points. This is an evolved, bigger and badder Kane. I think he has 240+ points in him if he stays fit. At 10.5m starting, that's great value.

    B) Not convinced that Son out is correct just yet.

I'm leaving the door open in GW9. Definitely will not be losing Son this week. I intend to swap one of Son/Rashford to fund KdB. Two weeks of blanks and everyone ditches the top goal scorer in the game. That said, he hasn't looked too good performance wise and either he or Rashford has to make way for KdB. If he gets a big score vs City and Rashford is underwhelming, I'll keep him over Rash.

    C) City are still the biggest priority.

I'm seeing lots of Bruno transfers this week but it feels short-sighted to me. These City fixtures are the ones to target. BUR FUL mun WBA. It's just too nice. At least one of KdB/Sterling needs to come in. And maybe Jesus + Cancelo. Fixtures breed form. City have their forwards back. They played brilliantly in GW1 vs Wolves when Jesus was fit. I think this is where their season really starts. They will win by like 4 or 5 imo in at least 1 of the 3 plum home games they have coming up. I don't think the form is strong enough to necessitate KdB + Sterling and tearing team structure up, but at least one and if that means no Bruno, then no Bruno it is.

Southampton and Newcastle afterwards are outstanding fixtures as well. Southampton got destroyed by the pace of Zaha, Werner and Son. Sterling and Aguero will benefit.

Yep, good points and food for thought. I fancy Son to score against City and ruin a lot of people's plans 🙂 if that happens I may look at Jesus and Cancelo in for GW10 and keep Son (and Bruno) over KDB.

Agreed on all points. I'm totally baffled at any Kane transfer out right now - He's shown clearly he's now captain material, 1 or no blanks all season, when spurs have their backs to the wall and need someone to claw a result for them, Kane has been there twice against burnley and now west brom. He will keep delivering in the big games.

Son is more difficult, it pains me and I'm sure I may be punished.. edging very close to Son>Bruno this week. I do believe Son will have a very good chance for points against city, he destroyed them in the champions league not so long ago lest not forget. However after that, Chelsea with an improved defence, Arsenal play tougher now, and in both fixtures son has a bad previous record. Therefore when Im putting them next to each other over the next 4/5, I see Bruno coming out on top. Whether that causes me to lose points elsewhere is the big question, but what may shade it is Bruno is captain material next week, and I have no other obvious captain apart from Grealish, but I'm not sure I can back him yet with C.

City are indeed the biggest priority if you don't have I believe! I've personally kept KDB through thick and thin and felt pretty gutted he missed the Pen because that Haul has been coming and his EO is so low, that was what I was hoping for. But it also keeps people off buying him for several weeks longer ;). So since I have KDB already, Son>Bruno makes sense unfortunately. Son will still be a great asset all season, and when fixtures sway differently, hes an easy switch from KDB/Bruno down if he pops off, but equally, KDB / Bruno have to really go off form.

Ziyech is also very interesting but for now I believe Salah/KDB/Bruno all trump him, so I'm going to leave for now. I don't think he will keep up his goalscoring form, but he will keep consistent assists coming. He will be like KDB in his early seasons, low goals, plenty of assists, but don't think he will reach the same level as KDB last year. No pens etc. When City get going and smash burnley 8-0 everyone will turn around and look !

Um... Salah at home for captain this week? I think Leicester are overrated this season based on their current league position. They have not been that good. In fact, they have created the fewest chances of ANY team in the division since GW2.

I'd argue it's bolstered by good fixtures.

They've only played City who is considered a tough opponent and they let in 2 goals. The only other top 6 side they've played is Arsenal who have proven to be dire this year.

Leicester also lost to Villa and West Ham this season mind.

I think Liverpool will win handily.

I can agree that Leicester will likely concede to Liverpool but I don't quite agree that it will be an easy win for Pool. I can see Leicester coming away with another shock win. Shouldnt be so much of a shock though, Pool have a dodgy defense now, Leciester and vardy are devastating on the counter, dont write off leicester. But still Salah cap is a top choice haha

Leicester have been very good away from home this year - Leeds & Man City results - with Fulham afterwards I see a Kane - Vardy transfer and then next GW a Son - KDB transfer. I currently have exactly the right funds.

I see your points and agree but Bruno seems like a season keeper though... And you can't keep Kane and Son AND get Bruno + City players. (Well you can get Jesus quite easily but he's a bit of a risk for his order when Kun is back). So for most people it comes down to this question:

      Drop one
      A) Son/Kane
      B) Bruno
      C) City mid

On paper with fixtures the most logical thing seems to be to drop Kane or Son. Personally I'm going without City until I see a clear change in attacking quality.

Yeah this is fair I guess. I will probably drop Son if he does nothing vs City.

See this is one of my points. My priority on City is different. I have them at the top come GW10.

        1. City mid.
        2. Kane
        3. Bruno
        4. Son/Rashford/Ziyech

Great points. I'll probably keep both Son and Kane this week and ignore Bruno, but will definitely get KdB in GW10/11. It feels just wrong to ditch Son for a hit at this stage.

So it's mainly driven by the fact I'm a United fan and need a way to have Bruno in my team now.

I don't disagree on KDB, as opposed to Sterling. I think his assist and bonus potential is high enough - though he'd need to keep pens to be an explosive enough captain for me.

Sterling, however, creates nothing, so they need to be scoring a lot of goals (and him getting a lot of them) for him to be worth it.

He's not quite essential yet. I have doubts he will carry any goal threat, but he may become one of the most creative players in the league. However when up against premium Mid options who are goalscorers, Salah/ Son / Bruno / KDB / Rash - thats where the big points lie, with 5 for a goal. So he will be a great pick but still not quite essential..

Wouldn’t consider Soucek to be a front 8 attacker as I loathe benching headaches. He would be permanently first on bench and probably bring some sub points. I get what you’re saying but probably worth the 0.4 over Bissouma imo

Logically the right answer is hold. However if you can afford the xfer, think about who would you captain for those plum matches? Personally theres big "?" marks over sterling for cap. He can inexplicitly be dropped for big home games, Pep has said he hasn't rested him but that he will at some point but not in the big games theyve had so far. Sterling can be part of 8-0 thrashing and score no points, equally yes he can explode, but is he consistent enough to captain securely? For me no, which is why KDB for me, he wont be dropped, he will ALWAYS be involved in all goals somehow.

Lamptey is giving me dramas on WC. He is ridiculously advanced and should have scored his second goal in as many appearances last GW. Threat of 1 amongst all defenders. Brighton have pretty solid defensive stats with low volume of shots in the box and xGc, but BHA always seem to have a lapse and let in a goal or two. Thoughts?

I sold him because of this

An attacking defender needs a good team around him to get FPL points. He's very advanced but gets injured too often, plays for a naive team with a coach who loves punching above his weight and never sits back to grind out the win (even Klopp and Pep do this sometimes, Potter), and is impossible to rotate because his points aren't predictable. You permastart and watch other options outscore him, or rotate and get burnt

Beautiful player. I want him in a better team... Or if Brighton gets their act together, I'll get him back at 5.0 or 5.5, as he'll clearly be worth it if that happens

I'm surprised how many are overlooking him. He's a set and forget option regardless of fixtures, if brighton get a cleany then bonus but how many players are better at his price 4.7m? If he was 5.5 then I'd understand, but his goals and asissts are not a fluke. Brighton indeed are in top 5 best Def in terms of xGC, however the stats are weird and they prevent many shots but allow a fair chunk of big chances. Possibly set pieces are an issue. Either way, for 4.7m for a defender who basically plays as a right winger, he's an easy starter in my team every week. Just dont rotate, otherwise you will get burned

Even they're 6th best for BC conceded, the main issue with them was/is Ryan's Kepa esque form this season.

Lamptey is a season keeper. He's cheap enough to rotate with another 4.5ish player. The mistake is to overthink a cheap player who gets you around 80-100 points a season.
If you miss out on points so be it, you can't have 11 perfect players, no one I've seen win fpl aims for perfection. How we play can be a reflection on who we are as people. Certain players don't suit our personalities.

There's too much happening in the non-premium aspects of your team to be fixed with hits. When this happens, I always suggest a WC

Premium hits can at least come with the promise of a captaincy. Would you be comfortable with a mega to remove Dallas, Saiss, Mitchell and Lookman, then also switch Sterling and Son to Bruno and KDB, maybe Werner to Ziyech to free funds too?

Feels like a clear WC situation

Looks decent to me? Missing Kane but arguably with tougher fixtures he wont be exploding and possibly Werner can keep pace. Have sterling for upcoming city fixture swing so thats good. Son can move to bruno or ziyech if put off by fixtures or equally he can be kept. Personally not a fan of Bellerin because arsenal cannot keep a clean sheet, chillwell a better option there. If moving Saiss to city def, Id pick Dias as even though cancelo is great Mendy is back soon and there may be rotation. Does need a bit of money moving from def to 8th attacker. Probably bench lookman and try move to watkins / bamford. If you've kept WC this long then Id still keep it, christmas can be messy injuries wise. You have no injuries and mostly all playing players, so id say this still looks good

Many people predicted this in preseason:

Owning the right premiums at the right time will make or break this season. All the premiums are possible season keepers, but they will have periods when they burn hot and when they go cold, or some will stay hot/cold all season long

Without captaincy rotation or with a permacap, season keeper premiums are easy. When looking for the best captain each GW, some premiums have to go sometimes

It depends on how you play

    1. Flair
      • 3 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, all the options are great. You have to chose whichever players you believe will be greater. The quality available means there will rarely be a consensus on moving a premium player in or out.

      • 4 Years

I disagree because at the end of the season there will be a team you could have played without making a transfer or captain change that would have won the whole thing.

I'd add TAA in a -8 and get Chilwell in now too. Spend the rest on Mitchell to Cancelo next GW

Reluctant to lose Son for anyone other than KDB, but need 0.5 to do that.
    Which is best?
    A) Save
    B) R.James - Coufal
    C) DCL - Watkins
    D) Son - Grealish (would then need to downgrade Kane to get KDB)

    McCarthy Button
    Chilwell James Ayling CTaylor Mitchell
    Mane Bruno Son Soucek Bissouma
    Kane DCL Bamford

Is this front 8 going to drive me insane with benching headaches?

    Salah KDB Son Grealish Ziyech
    DCL Antonio Watkins

      I'm considering Kane>Antonio, Foden>KDB for GW10

Yes, total waste of funds if you're benching watkins, antonio or grealish, or any of them!

Yes - don't do it to yourself, get Bissouma or Brewster in

Get Riedewald (nailed mid at 4.4) or Brewster (nailed fwd at 4.5) in and spend the funds elsewhere in your XI, or leave it in the bank

Antonio to Brewster and improve defence

Cheers all, I guess I should just go Brewster and use the extra 1.7 million elsewhere..........

Feel like I've finally settled on a plan. It comes down to these two options.

    A) Eze
    B) Watkins -4

It's pretty close to me. I like Eze's differential potential. Great fixtures, good price, no points hit needed. Watkins has obvious appeal. Also has great fixtures and a good run starting now, penalties as well. It also fixes my Aston Villa cap because Davis was blocking me from certain moves.

I like Eze as a player a lot but I would worry about his minutes. Surely he rotates a fair bit over the next few weeks.

I don't think he does. I think he starts from now on. He got injured and was eased back in. Now he started and played the full 90 and CPL scored 4 goals. He's pretty nailed imo.

Fair enough, worth a punt if you have a gut feeling. Class player.

I like both but picking the striker with the easiest fixtures feels more like you’re playing the game, for good or bad.

B - Villa score more than Palace so it should pay off within the next two or three GWs

    If you planned to do

    Game week 11 - Salah > kdb
    Game week 12 - kdb > Salah

Then you’d have no pool attacked for their trip to wolves and no City attacker for their game v Utd

But would have both for the games V Fulham

Blah, I’m just trying to not take another hit with my current team

    Mendy
    Semado cresswell Konsa
    Bruno, salah, son, Zaha
    Kane, dcl, bam

    Lamppost, Mitchel, anguissa
