More home struggles for Vardy as Lookman’s FPL form continues

Leicester 1-2 Fulham

  • Goals: Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) | Ademola Lookman (£5.0m), Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) | André-Franck Zambo Anguissa (£4.5m), Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.3m)
  • Bonus points: Cavaleiro x3, Anguissa x2, Lookman x1

KING SOUR STADIUM

Jamie Vardy‘s (£10.2m) lacklustre home form reared its ugly head yet again as Leicester suffered a 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Fulham in Gameweek 10.

As has often been the case at the King Power Stadium this season, the Foxes’ front-man was unable to have much influence on the game, faced with yet another home game where the opposition dropped deep throughout.

He did show some smart play when he knocked down a second-half cross for Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) to fire into the top corner but, apart from that, Vardy never got a chance to stretch his legs.

A five-point score will feel somewhat anti-climactic for over one-million Fantasy Premier League managers who captained Vardy, especially considering it was against Fulham who, up until now, have boasted one of the division’s worst defences.

But his struggles at the King Power Stadium are nothing new, as has been well documented this season. Across his four Premier League home appearances this season, Vardy has averaged just 3.3 points per game.

Such information is likely to cast doubt on Vardy’s Fantasy credentials for upcoming home meetings with Brighton (Gameweek 12) and Everton (Gameweek 13), especially if he could not even buck his home-trend against Fulham.

Thankfully for his 28.7% ownership, Gameweek 11 takes Vardy into a much more favourable scenario: a trip to Sheffield United.

80.3% of his points have come on the road this season, an average of 10.6 points per away game, while the Blades are the only Premier League team without a clean sheet in 2020/21.

BARNES DOOR

The 4.1% invested in Barnes were among the rare winners of Leicester’s defeat to Fulham as he scored the Foxes’ only goal of the game.

Finding the net, the former West Bromwich Albion loanee certainly sent a message to manager Brendan Rodgers who left him out of the starting XI initially, despite a strong performance midweek.

Neither James Maddison (£7.0m) nor Dennis Praet (£5.5m) provided much support for an isolated Vardy as Rodgers went with a 3-4-2-1 formation which lacked the width to really stretch Fulham’s deep block.

It was in the second half that the hosts were able to make some limited progress, as Barnes and Cengiz Ünder (£5.9m) came on for Praet and wing-back Luke Thomas (£4.3m) respectively, allowing for a slight improvement in the fluidity of their attack.

TAKE A LOOK

By contrast, Fulham went about Monday night’s encounter with a cut and thrust that Leicester could not replicate.

The result itself might have been a surprising one but it was a fully deserved win for the visitors, especially considering Scott Parker made the bold decision of benching key players in Aleksandar Mitrović (£5.7m) and Tom Cairney (£5.3m).

Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.3m) was handed the centre-forward role and, despite his embarrassing penalty miss last time out, was brave enough to step up for the latest Fulham spot-kick and slammed it past Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m). That ensured the Cottagers did not become the first Premier League team to miss three penalties in a row.

“I asked him yesterday, ‘are you ready to take this penalty if we get one?’ and he looked me dead in the eye and said ‘yeah, I’m ready’. The courage, the bravery to step up there, they’re things that we need.” – Scott Parker

There was also a strong showing from Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) who has also responded well to his recent penalty woes.

Since sending a stoppage-time spot-kick into Lukasz Fabianski‘s (£5.0m) arms at West Ham, the Fulham winger has gone on to get himself a goal and assist across the last two matches, going close with some direct free-kicks too.

Matches with Manchester City (away) and Liverpool (home) over the next two Gameweeks are likely to ward off any Fantasy interest but as Fulham’s fixtures turn more positive in Gameweek 13, Lookman’s propensity to shoot could mean he finally fulfils his potential as a budget midfield option.

“He came in for a lot of stick when he did the penalty, rightly so, you need to take your medicine after that. What is going to determine, like anyone Cavaleiro – last week he slips for the penalty. I’m not on Instagram but I can only imagine what was being said, the jokes for everyone to see and Cav would have seen that. Ade’s performance tonight, earned the right to score a goal.” – Scott Parker

Leicester City XI (3-4-2-1): Schmeichel; Fuchs, Evans, Fofana; L Thomas (Ünder 46′), N Mendy (Iheanacho 70′), Tielemans, Justin; Maddison, Praet (H Barnes 46′); Vardy.

Fulham XI (5-4-1): Areola; A Robinson, Adarabioyo, Andersen, Aina, Decordova-Reid; Lookman (Bryan 90′), Zambo-Anguissa, Reed, Loftus-Cheek (Lemina 77′); Cavaleiro (Mitrović 87′).

yes, this is guaranteed to happen imo... still not going to captain him, would be ecstatic with just the 13 points and give me some faith in keeping him for a few more weeks.

with how defensive spurs have been, it's hard to justify kane and son imo. especially when city could score 3-4 goals/game for the forseeable.

2 transfers to replace a striker playing for a potent team against a mediocre impotent team?

KdB needed 5 goals to grab 10 points... ten?! You need to feel really certain that you are doing the right thing imo. Transfers are so crucial to keeping the rest of your squad fit and with good prospects this year

That's the issue I feel like Spurs could score a few against Arsenal and surely Kane/Son will be involved. Who is to say KDB will even start. Maybe he does start but he plays deep.

What do I need to do with this lot? Roll the FT this week, and look at using 2FT's next week? Keep thinking about doing Werner & Grealish > Bruno & Bamford/Wilson.

Can't get Bruno in without losing Grealish, or Kane & I think I'd rather lose Grealish?

    Martinez (Steer)
Cancelo - Coufal - Lamptey (Dallas & Taylor)

Although Vardy seems to come up short at home, I still can't understand how Leicester played so dismally against Fulham ! We are talking about the worst team in the PL and Leicester was chasing after the ball for most of the game.

In GW3 I was 4.8Mil rank, slowly been climbing and altho I’m still not anywhere near where I want to be I’m now at 1.4mil.
I haven’t had any major jumps tbh I think my biggest jump was about 800k in a single GW but most weeks I climb by about 200-400k.
There’s still satisfaction to be had in making these slow gains and playing sensible, people don’t really notice you catching until you are on their heels.

So yes I still have a long way to go, but if you are willing to play it slow, and realise you won’t get the instant gratification you desire then you will claw back places.
A lot of people imagine in their head this fantastic game week where they jump 2mil places, yea some people are lucky and get that, but they are in the tiny majority and let’s face it, most of us have the same core base of players. Just find little areas to fix in your squad, don’t fix things which aren’t broken, and a lot of the time sticking or doing nothing pays off more then constant changes. Taking constant -8s and things often amplifies bad results, not improve them.

Sure you can say my rank sucks but by January I will be in the top 100k I have no doubt about that as long as I stick to what I’m doing

I have Sterling and will be concerned too if he plays 90 mins, but today is still Tuesday and City play against Fulham on Saturday at 4pm...so ample time to rest players that have played in the CL too.

I know that Pep will always remain Pep but I also doubt he will leave a player like Sterling not playing for two weeks in a row in the PL.

Will do Vardy > Jesus/Ings or DCL > Adams to fund Son > Salah next gw.

Main issue is your defense but I think you already know that with the fire power you have in midfield.

Might need to improve defence soon, get more nailed bench options for the Christmas period

It's a blessing really to have such a shite rank that the season is in all essence over (regarding MLs which is all that matters). Now I can just do some casual punts and worst case I get rank 2m instead of 1m which is an irrelevant difference

There’s 28 gameweeks left. Even if someone is 150 points ahead of you, you only have to score about 5 points more than them each week on average to overtake them

If you were managing an actual football team chucking in the towel because you were mid table a quarter of the way through the season I would fire your ass

Plan how to claw it back

can we take anything from Peps line up tonight? if Cancelo starts he's likely to be on the bench, If Mahrez gets a rest he should start at the weekend?

or Pep just does Pep and no1 has a clue

I think it's a good indicator, there are anomalies last week Mendy played midweek and he chucked him straight in at the Weekend

Yes, but Mendy came from injury and was taken out quite early imo, which was indication of managing his minutes for the weekend. That's how I at least considered that (or thought that it was real possibility and decided to wait and see and not get Cancelo in).

Sterling has been dropped, right? He only played 60mins last midweek and didn't start the previous league game.

We can wrap it up as Pep Roulette or managing minutes before Xmas but he's got to fight to get back into the team.

Don't know whether to get rid for KDB or ride it out this week

Pep is frustrated with his team and he is not the guy who let's those who don't perform play. Result or someone else gets the chance. Remember Sane for example. In that team everyone has to deliver. Therefore I wouldn't be surprised even if he starts the same team in weekend as he did last time. But naturally, he is Pep.

He is letting him play though. He did start in the Champions League. If he starts tonight and gets benched again on the weekend, it still doesn't mean that he is dropped.

But from a FPL perspective, along with Foden, he seems to be on the wrong side of rotation, so I'm selling.
