We continue to assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Gameweek 26 in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on Liverpool v Manchester United.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

SALAH, DARWIN + GAKPO RUN RIOT

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) starred in Liverpool’s stunning 7-0 win over Man Utd on Sunday, as he became the Reds’ record Premier League goalscorer, moving ahead of Robbie Fowler.

In a devastating attacking display, the Egyptian looked on it right from the start and served up four attacking returns (two goals, two assists) and maximum bonus, earning his owners a whopping 21 points.

Salah’s ownership is down to 25% in the top 10k, with many FPL managers on a Wildcard choosing to sell him ahead of Gameweek 26. However, Sunday’s display was a painful reminder of his haul potential, with an appealing trip to relegation-threatened Bournemouth up next, where he also scored 21 points in the 2017/18 season.

“129 goals, that is insane. What an unbelievable number. He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah’s record

Cody Gakpo (£7.7m) and Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) also scored two goals each, with substitute Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) adding a seventh late on. The former has now found the net four times in as many Gameweeks.

Jurgen Klopp’s side played with renewed confidence and picked apart Man Utd, with seven of their eight shots on target hitting the net.

“It was one of the best performances for a long, long time. In a way I think everybody saw how good the boys can be. I think nobody was in doubt about Darwin’s future impact when he settles because he is a real force of nature, Cody [Gakpo] plays in the most difficult area of the pitch against a man-marking side which is super tricky, but how he keeps himself on his feet there and has the overview of everybody else, Mo is Mo [Salah].

Harvey [Elliott] played a top game the other night against Wolves, had the highest counter-pressing outcome of any player in the Premier League this season so if that is not a qualification for starting again then I don’t know one to be honest, and is for us super important on the ball as well. Hendo [Henderson] didn’t start the last game, what a performance tonight, absolutely incredible, and Fab [Fabinho] is back. Last line is in a better moment as well so it’s like it has to be. How I said, we have to make these results count with the result of the next game. That’s what we try.” – Jurgen Klopp

“A few months ago everyone thought it was a good moment to play Liverpool – you can’t say it publicly but everyone thought it – because they felt we were struggling a lot but now it is less of a good moment, we look much more like ourselves.  It is important that everyone knows we are here and we are still alive.” – Jurgen Klopp

FIVE CLEAN SHEETS IN A ROW

Sunday’s win was Liverpool’s fourth in five league games. They have also kept five straight clean sheets. It’s perhaps a bit too soon to say they are ‘back’ defensively. After all, they have conceded 10 Opta-defined ‘big chances’ from Gameweek 23 onwards and were hammered at home by Real Madrid recently.

Still, they are moving in the right direction again, and it’s worth noting Man Utd had previously scored in each of their last 15 Premier League games.

Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) was particularly impressive. He provided the assist for Gakpo’s opener, created three chances and regularly got forward on the overlap.

“Good! Look, that’s a top situation. I think everybody saw how good Kostas [Tsimikas] is in the last game, he had a real impact and set up a super goal. But Robbo is Robbo and he had now 90 minutes’ break and I thought he benefitted from that today. It was a top performance, like really a flying Scotsman performance!” – Jurgen Klopp on Andrew Robertson

The result sees Liverpool move above Newcastle United into fifth place in the Premier League, albeit having played a game more than Eddie Howe’s side.

UNITED SUFFER NIGHTMARE AFTERNOON

Man Utd had come into the game on an 11-game unbeaten run, but were blown away by Liverpool in the second half.

They did have chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) – via an excellent Luke Shaw (£5.3m) pass – both missing presentable openings, but quickly fell apart after.

They have had a busy schedule of late, although Erik ten Hag refused to blame fatigue.

“No, nothing to do with that because we can bring the performance four days ago, seven days ago. It’s nothing to do with that. It’s just about the head. We know Liverpool are a good transition team. When you are 1-0 down, you can’t lose your head and bring them into the transition moments. We did not make the right decisions in the defensive actions. That is unprofessional. We have high standards and that’s not what we showed today in the second half.” – Erik ten Hag

There is no doubt United are a much, much better side under ten Hag, yet they have now conceded six and seven goals in away games against last season’s top two, as well as three at current leaders Arsenal, highlighting their defensive issues when they come up against top sides.

Next up for United is Thursday’s UEFA Europa League meeting with Real Betis, which is followed by a match against Southampton in Gameweek 27. A blank follows (they play Fulham in the FA Cup), before they ‘double’ in Gameweek 29.

“I don’t have an explanation. In the first half we were quite in control. Second half at the start we gave two goals away. There was no team anymore. We didn’t stick to the plan. There were 11 individuals. I don’t know, it’s really bad. I have given my opinion [to the players]. It was unprofessional. You always have to stick together as a team. We didn’t do that. There was no discipline. You have can setbacks but you have to stick together and do your job.

We made the wrong decisions. That for me is unprofessional. I’m really disappointed and angry. We let our fans down. As a squad, as a team, you cannot allow this. You have to stick together and support each other and fight for each other. You have to defend. We didn’t do that and for me that is really unprofessional. We have made a lot of progress but you see what happens when you don’t keep standards. What I have said in the dressing room is that this is unacceptable. But also it is only one game. We will bounce back. This team is strong enough and we will reset and bounce back.” – Erik ten Hag

61 with Toney captain to come. Decent enough but could have been better after taking hits to bring in both Zinch and Iheanacho (can’t believe he didn’t score yesterday) and leaving TAA on bench. Ignored my own advice of never take hits for defenders as that transfer cost me 9 points. At least with the other transfer I picked up Super Mac. I think every team needs at least 1 Brighton MF.

I had planned to get Mitoma in for Odegard. But then I lose a gw28 player and now not sure I want to do that. Maddison and leicester were poor yesterday, concerned they'll continue in that way and he'll be a waste of a double game week spot.

I sold Salah, Trent, Nunez, Walker, White, then switched Mitoma to March...truly the worst thing I've ever done in fantasy. I was making half decent progress and now it's all been undone.

I was coming to post how I feel for those who sold Salah before this 21pt mega haul, but prior to this game Salah had scored 9 goals in the last 5 consecutive h2h matchups against Man United so we've seen him perform in this matchup plenty of times before.

Honestly, so glad I didn't bring him in for the DGW, because most likely would've sold him before this game as well.

Absolutely brutal and crushing for sellers, these type of decisions stick with you forever in your subconscious, possibly even impacting future decisions. Truly humbling this game.

Sold both Salah and Darwin this week and missed out on a megahaul. Along with many others didn't see this result coming, indeed thought only hardcore Liverpool fans and fools would hold onto these players. Just shows that football is very unpredictable and proves FF game is a bit of a lottery. More to the point do we still have any faith in the so called self appointed experts because of the unpredictability of football.

Its a pretty unsavoury week. Combined they scored more than my WC. It hurts that my minileague rival held Salah as a hangover, but nobody, nobody, no-one at all could have predicted this. Hey ho. Cant undo what happened. A harder kick in the jollies than I expected for sure, but FPL life sometimes.

Absolutely mate. Big love. Ive still no idea how that happened. Liverpool pound for pound on their day are 20% better in view. But its been hidden for months and months and UTD were firing again. I really thought ETH had sewn it up. Tough day.

        Kepa (Ward)
        Trip White Pinnock (Emerson, Bueno)
        Salah Saka Rash Ode (Andreas)
        Haaland Kane Toney

        0 itb

Could potentially do Ode > Brighton mid - 4 games vs. 3 in next 3 gwks, but I like arsenal's fixtures and Ode had a ridiculous number of attempts yesterday.

Still got WC, BB and FH.

You are well set up, your team can easily outscore any team loaded with Brighton mids.

What are your plans for GW29? Odegard to Fernandes and Kane to Watkins? If so, I would go for one Brighton mid for Odegaard for the potential haul or the high ownership. Otherwise, Emerson for Estupinan or any other Brighton defender. Also because Emerson could have minutes at risk cause of the new signing Porro.

My team. Very similar also with intact chips.

          Kepa
          TAA, Dunk, Trippier, Henry Tark
          Salah Saka Odegaard Rashford Andreas
          Halland Toney Watkins

Glad I'm not the only one! Thanks for your reply.

My plan is to save FH and do Salah & Bueno > Maddison and Schar before 28, then take a hit before 29 to shift Andreas and Emerson > Brighton Mid and Def. That'll give 10 players in 28 and 10 doublers + triple arsenal, haaland and Kane for BB 29. Yes Emerson is definitely a priority sell.

                GW28: 11 players (-8)
                GW29: 13 DGW + Saka and Halland (-4)
                GW31: 6 DGW
                FH 32
                WC 33

3 hits total through all this GWs.

The original plan involved loosing Salah for GW29. Have to re think about it. 🙂

16 points down with 2 players left when I compare non-WC and WC26 (starting 11 only)...not too bad when I look at it from this POV.

    Non-WC
    TAA 6
    Shaw - 1
    Tark 0
    Salah 21
    Darwin 12
    Nketiah 0
    38

    WC26
    Zinchenko 1
    Estupinan 6
    Henry
    Mitoma 13
    Kane 2
    Toney
    22

Players that are common to both teams - Kepa, Saka, Ode, Rashford and Haaland.

    No Haaland WC27 draft:

    Kepa, Steele
    Trippier, Botman, Gabriel, Mings, Henry
    Salah, Saka, Rashford, Mitoma, MacAllister
    Kane, Toney, Watkins

MacAllister to Maddison GW28 for 11 players.

    Likely 13DGWs for Bench boost.

    Thoughts?

Man Utd have conceded 60% of their goals in 4 league games.

    4 vs Brighton
    4 vs Brentford
    7 vs Liverpool
    6 vs Man city

    You have to laugh.

Got rid of TAA, White, Salah, Nunez and played March and Martinelli ahead of Mitoma. Also chickened out of going Rash - Foden.

Not blaming anyone, all my fault.

    Anyone done worse than this?

(Only bright spot is I went Kepa and Chilwell).

Any idea where the Leeds DGW will move to? 34 or 37?

My transfers this week have a knock on effect on the 34 and 37 DGWs and the Leeds one is tricky to figure from Ben Crellin’s spreadsheet.

Leeds will only double in 34 or 37 if Fulham beat United in the FA Cup resulting in the Fulham Leeds fixture in 32 to be rearranged

    Bottomed on an older article.

Stupidly activated WC last night to try and catch some price rises ahead of the double, and now I have doubts over selling Salah, Darwin and TAA ahead of the Bournemouth fixture.

What’s the play here? One less Brighton mid and keep Salah? Leave out one of Haaland/Kane?

It's pretty much anyone, it's bandit country.

I could set one up tomorrow – let's say 'FPL Bandit' – and I'd be one. Wouldn't matter what cack I was spouting, whether i was eight years old, whether I had any insight whatsoever.
