Something about subs...its great to have decent bench, but to be honest i play with trash bench for years (only important thing is that i have one nailed player on bench at start) and i have been always good ranked

I always have the cheapest bench possible, I've never been lucky enough to get bench points so don't bother trying.

I tend to agree—unless you depend too much on a starter that is too much of a rotation risk like e.g. Pedro, Enciso

I would always have at least one have decent sub like you say.
But other years depending on fixtures/pricing rotation I might go for more. You can always reserve out of a bench that has three/four options. Depending on which player is doing well.
I will be doing that with my BB gw1 team - plus the team I predominately picked Palace rotates with Man United and Villa for the first few anyway.
As looking down the line I noticed that many will FPL participants be stuck when Arsenal play Man United.

So Darwin scored a few preseason goals and now everyone has convinced themselves that he's first choice or are they picking him knowing he's a massive minutes risk? Either way I'm all for some fun differential picks.

He answers a question they have, that's all. A peg for their hole, but maybe the wrong shaped peg for that hole.
Personally, if I have a pool attacker, its probably Jota or nothing.

If you plan on holding WC until the big fat guy in the red suit is coming, I would also go balls deep in my bench. Im doing it again this season - 14/15 easily playable - after a few less successful seasons. Tried and trusted for me. Dont care about points on bench and pricing now enables unless you want Saaland.

The popularity of Jackson and Nkunku is beyond funny. One of the oldest unwritten rules in fantasy is NOT to pick new players to the league. We have been shown why enough times before, especially with Chelsea strikers. But some of you guys still have not learnt your lesson 😀

Pre-season does not mean much when you are playing teams no one has even heard of before, or the games have no real competition and as a result, clubs are playing their B teams or youth.

    Nkunku - 19.9%
    Jackson - 8.6%
That's nearly 30% of the game with one of those two, and I think a large percentage of that 30% are not casuals and chelsea fans, but seasoned fpl managers.

Maybe you get lucky, and some of you probably will. But why take this risk? There's differentials, and then there's those two.

well I don't think its nonsense, I'm sure its been proven right more times then wrong. There have been so many total flops that came to the PL, particularly strikers, but even players like Sancho, and Havertz.

He was extremely frustrating in his first 2 or 3 seasons - if anything he’s an example of the point you’re trying to make.

Some players struggle, some players thrive - there’s no “rule” otherwise players like Salah and Haaland wouldn’t come and smash the goal records.

I always feel that is a thing arrogant Premier League fans say because they believe their league is the greatest thing ever and they don't watch any other football. Plenty of foreigners have hit the ground running in the past and plenty will in the future. Of course many flop or need time to adapt as well but that's where football knowledge and FPL risk vs reward come in.

its not to say the PL is better or the best, its just looking at the reality. Most new players struggle to adjust to the league, what the exact reason for that is unknown, but its a combination of factors. Some take one or two seasons and they get used to it, others never adapt, and some great players failed to adapt or fit in.

Look at Spurs for example, the list of failed signing's is beyond ridiculous. Sure, its probably garbage Spurs scouting, but, these players were great in the previous seasons. Soldado for example had 26 since goals in la liga the season before joining spurs, then when he came to the PL he scored I think 3/4 in his first season and all of those were pens. We wont even go into Ndombele and what spurs paid for him..

There's other players like DiMaria. Darwin had a rocky start, and a long list of Chelsea and ManU players.

The players who seem to transition the best are typically only the very best players.

Yes of course there are plenty of examples but to suggest it is some sort of "unwritten rule" is ridiculous.

There are plenty of examples of the opposite. Since you used Spurs what about Kulusevski? He started brilliantly. Bruno Fernandes took the league by storm when he joined. Sigurdsson and Michu were superb FPL assets right off the bat, they don't fall into that category of "only the very best players."

The only "rule" I have ever seen is not to punt on many players new to a league, punting on one is no harm. Plenty of players have taken a long time to settle in the league, plenty have settled immediately, plenty have failed to settle. That's sport and life, not going to be the same for everyone.

I hadn't considered Chelsea assets (bar Colwill as part of overall rotation) but they've played good teams in preseason and it's more about the signs that are there from Chelsea on the whole, as well as Nkunku and Jackson individually that are good which had me interested. For Nkunku it's not the goals but the fact he seems to be a poacher, and he seems to constantly want to be on the penalty spot when Chelsea attack, and Jackson looks like he's happy to run in behind and try to stretch defences. For a team that has no Europe to worry about and a manager that may feel he has a point to prove I think one of them is worth a shot as much as a Jesus (ever inconsistent despite high xGI) and a Nunez (very high xG but erratic finishing and questionable minutes)

Hi guys, how’s it going? Been a while.

I think I’ve boiled down my two main drafts to one team with Salah and one without Salah.

    It’s essentially a question of:
    A) Salah, Wissa and two 6.5 mids
    B) 9m mid, Jesus and upgrade one of the 6.5 mids or 4.5 striker

B is the ‘template’ and probably most sensible approach but I do really like owning Salah and I think it could be a valuable point of difference, especially if the captaincy in GW2 can pay off against Haaland and the masses.

If it doesn’t work, it should be straightforward to downgrade Salah to one of the emerging mids and to upgrade up front in GW3?

Who else is going with Salah? Not heard or read much love for him on here or on podcasts and stuff

    Cheers

I only like including Salah if I plan to captain him GW2. Which I could. But then I don't have Rashford, whose fixtures are arguably better. I have Trent instead. He's a captain option for GW2 and I can happily downgrade him to Chilwell/Shaw in GW3

Fair. I don’t think I’d be ready to captain Trent in that game, much as I admire him as a player. Could be great for you though. Salah’s just so reliable.. most of the time!

I’ve been tinkering with some drafts that has him but in the end it’ll be very templatey for me because of Ars and Utd first three fixtures. Planning an early wildcard anyways so will get a couple of games to see how Pool and Chelsea are doing before deciding on their assets

That sounds sensible, thanks. The rate my team tool also suggests spreading those Salah funds could be the way to go. He’s just so tempting!

Yeah I know. Especially since looking a bit of a differential even. I might go there in the end. For me it’s be a question of Salah+Shaw vs Rashford+Bruno/Saka/Øde and a 442 instead of a 352

    Serious question.

Why all the love for Jesus? He was outscored by 4 Arsenal midfielders last season (including Trossard).

Six strikers scored more than him and if you select your transfers by "All Players" and "Total Points" then every single player on the list from Goalies to Forwards scored more than him.

Rather that worrying about Salah and TAA and whether there is value there why arent people taking a punt on a low/mid priced third forward and spreading that extra cash about?

    Genuinely interested.

Re: Jesus, he was injured for a lot of last season, is nailed in the team who just finished second and has nice fixtures. Potential bargain at 8m.

Know what you mean about the last point though. A punty 3-4-3 with the likes of Darwin and Nkunku could be fun, if risky! So many options this year

        Thanks for the reply.

Ironically I haven't risked a cheap third attacker.

This is mine. You don't have to comment on it, but I like it. Some punts and some established. And if it goes wrong...

        ....there's always wildcard.

        Onana, Areola

        Stones, Gabriel, Konsa, Botman, Gusto

        Salah, Fernandez, Mitoma, Anderson, Diaby

        Haaland, Nkunku, Darwin

He was injured for a good chunk of last season. A better statistic to look at is points per match rather than overall points.

Other than Pedro - and that's a big maybe - I'm not sure there is a low priced forward worth a punt . . . others have answered the Jesus question - he was injured, fixtures are absolutely plum, Arsenal score a lot.

Interesting point raised by Klopp re the transfer window around the world
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66370013
Basically the Saudi window closes on 20th September whereas PL window closes on Sept 1st
I believe in the interest of fair play all transfer windows should end at the same time

    1. x.jim.x

How is the Saudi window closing later against the “interest of fair play”?

Potentially Saudi teams could buy PL players after the window has closed
Then loan them back to PL teams
I'm probably talking more about the disruption it could cause to the PL squads

They can unsettle players / squads with enormous bids at a time when the PL season is well under way and when they're unable to buy replacements if a player decides to leave. It's an awkward one with countries that have leagues that start and end at different points in the year, not ab easy fix

          • 11 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

Their actual transfer fees have been relatively low (beyond the Mbappe) which clubs can easily refuse. They’re doing all this for good PR - last thing they’ll want to do is annoy PL fans because they’re trying to attract them.

            • 6 Years

LOW? They've overpaid across the board which is why teams have accepted them. Saudi's can go *** themselves, disgrace they're even allowed to be involved.

The later transfer window is a potential disaster for European clubs, but in general I've found it amusing how little fuss has been made by the Saudis poaching players from the PL. Basically, the PL is a perfect example of late-stage capitalism gone mad and at least the chief of the PL, club owners and managers are self-aware enough to realise that having pillaged the rest of Europe for the best players, now the big PL fish is being eaten by an even bigger fish.

            1. x.jim.x

The players they’ve gotten are all mostly ageing or average (or both) for relatively small transfer fees. Until they get someone like Salah, Kane, Rashford, Haaland, Mbappe, Vinicius, etc they’ll just be seen as another China.

Suppose they come in for Casemiro after the Euro window has closed, and the Glazers decide to cash in before selling the club - that's United's season gone by GW4.
Or KDB, Salah etc - all players in their 30s but crucial to their clubs this season.

Too soon to say gtg but looks ok. Issue may be going Trent means weaker midfield and inability to switch to other 7.5 plus players who start well. Also light on Arsenal attack with their good fixtures. Trent to Estupinan or Gabriel and upgrade attack is what I would do but if you have confidence in Trent go for it
