    Currently on:

    Pick / Areola
    Colwill / Bell / AWB/ Bot / Porro
    Saka / Mbeumo / Bruno / Salah / Eze
    Jesus / Haaland / 4.5

I think I'm set on front 8, but I think defence has improvements. £0 ITB Thoughts?

I'd downgrade Eze to a 4.5m and spend the ITB to upgrade D so you can play 4-4-2.

I'd probably do this but keep Eze and downgrade Mbeumo.

Front 8 looks fine but way too much budget sacrificed in defence.
Will Colwill be a sure starter in the first few gameweeks?
Also Bell has no fixture in GW2, whilst Botman is away at Man City and AWB and Porro face each other.
You will need to downgrade one of the Mids i'm afraid, even a extra 1.0m will allow you to get the likes of Gabriel and Estupiñán in for 2 of your 4.5m defenders.
I like Archer as a 4.5m forward, should get minutes from the bench and looks a decent 2nd or 3rd bench player for FPL.

      Yeah I don't really like that defence either, but 5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4 / 4, or 5 + 3x 4.5s, looks fine as a structure so I think you can fix it without taking money out of your attack

How do you rank the Arsenal attacking assets? I’m currently on Saka and Jesus in a 343. Is it likely the Arsenal mids Will outscore Jesus? My thinking is that Odegaard could well play deeper to facilitate havertz. Marti may have reduced minutes now trossard is settled. Opinions?

I'm on Saka and Odegaard. Partly due to slightly more certainty of minutes for Odegaard.

      I'd rank them:

      Saka
      Odegaard
      Jesus
      Martinelli
      Trossard
      Rice
      Havertz

Exactly this, except I think it's a toss up between Saka and Øde

I don't think Havertz will affect Ødegaard that much. Given how it's looked so far in preseason Partey has to play dm (was always the case imho) and I think we might still see Rice at LCM even though we haven't so far in preseason. That could even facilitate a more attacking role for Øde. Today's game vs Monaco and the Community Shield will be decisive. Regardless I believe Ødegaard and Saka will outscore Jesus and that Øde might score most of all Arsenal players again. Both Martinelli and Trossard would as well but as you say they'll likely share minutes.

Great insight thanks. Opens up the possibility of switching Jesus to Odegaard and going with a Chelsea fwd. Im still not sure how Havertz fits into that team

I'm on the same in a 3-4-3, for starting likelihood. Ideally I'll keep Saka for the long haul and keep Jesus as a placemaker for the initial stretch. If his ceiling starts looking a bit short he's an easy transfer out.

My current thinking is that Havertz will affect Martinelli more than Ødegaard. Nothing has really changed on the right flank so I'd expect more of the same from Øde & Saka, but if Havertz is left 8 (which I'm still not convinced will be effective, at least not immediately) and maybe Timber LB, that's quite a big reconfiguration behind Martinelli and may affect where/when he receives the ball

      1. AIRMILES

Yeah, I think Havertz was brought in specifically because his versatility opens up a lot of options for the squad. He can play up front, meaning Jesus can switch to the right to give Saka a rest. Or he can play on the left, giving Martinelli a break. I don't see Havertz starting that many games; his main value to the squad is allowing in-game rotation up front.

As an Arsenal fan this is at least what I'm hoping for. But if we don't see it today vs Monaco at any time during the game then I don't think it'll happen.

I've also come round to thinking Trossard will affect Martinelli's minutes and have switched to Odegaard.
Havertz baffles me - Arteta is assembling a team that can play in multiple positions - Ode can get up and down as a #6, #8, #10. Rice can play a hybrid #6/#8. Havertz doesn't drop deep; he isn't versatile like Ode. You can argue he doesn't need to with Rice behind him, but I still feel he's not a starter in a Best XI. Bought him for squad depth, you say. But are we forgetting ESR?

Seems to me Arsenal have a helluva squad, but Havertz just seems unnecessary for the money he cost. And now they're doing to same with Raya.

Anyway, I'm currently tripling with an Arsenal attack - Jesus, Saka and Ode.

Arsenal needs the squad depth. I was also baffled by the Havertz signing originally, but with five permitted substitutions a match, having flexible players on the bench gives you a lot of options. I'm yet to be convinced if he was the right signing. I think Martinelli, Jesus and Saka will start as front 3 in 80% of PL games

Only a little disappointing 😀 Thanks for asking

Saw it at Amsterdam Eye, and found the sound to be quite amazing compared to my usual local cinemas, which makes me question my subscription haha

I'm really interested in the Manhatten project, the science and scientists and the themes around understanding the universe and the power to destroy it. Unfortunately, I thought the film suffered from typical biopic issues like trying having too many moving parts, lacking focus and plodding from one event to the other, albeit at quite a fast pace at times in Oppenheimer (which eventually became monotonous).

Still, a great experience and I would consider watching it again actually. Have you seen it then? What did you think?

Thanks for the mixed review. I've not seen it yet. I've got a weak bladder (in case you're interested), so three hours in the cinema isn't really possible for me, and I'd be loathe to miss 5 mins of the film in case it turned out to be a crucial 5 mins. Alas, I'll have to wait for it on piratebay.

Is a Brighton defensive double up viable for the first three games?

    A) Onana, Dunk, Jesus
    B) 4.5 gk, Shaw, Jesus
    C) Onana, Gabriel, Nkunku (leaves 0.5 itb for a Estupiñan to Chilwell upgrade)

    XX
    Stones, Estu, YY
    Saka, Ødegaard, Rashford, Fernandes, Mitoma
    ZZ, Haaland

    Areola, 4m, 4m, 4.5m

      C for sure (template though)

      How about

      Mitoma to Diaby or Eze
      Nkunku to Darwin
      Odegaard to Foden
      4.0 defender to Botman/Cash/Colwill/Henry

Yeah Darwin is ofc an option and probably the one to look at. I do prefer Jesus to him and Nkunku though because of minutes at risk for Darwin and general uncertainty around Chelsea, as well as it allows me to jump on Watkins if he gets off to a flying start.

Do you prefer C for only the first three gws as well or was it more in general?

    3. The Mentaculus

Yeah I think it absolutely is with those fixtures. Dunk has been injured & I don't think he's featured in the friendlies yet but I read that RDZ hopes to have him back for GW1:

      https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/23688091.brighton-update-lewis-dunk-solly-march-james-milner-fitness/

In the event that he wasn't ready, I was eyeing up the option of Van Hecke at 4m, although we could alternatively see Veltman CB. If we get a better idea of the likely starter between Steele / Verbruggen I'd probably stick him in.

First 3 games - yeh. Luton and Wolves don't look like they have goals in them, and all Hammers' forwards are off except Ings. But you'll need an exit strategy for GW4 on.

Yep, right now my exit strategy is an early wc. That's my plan currently regardless if I double up or not.

I'm also toying with the idea of sticking Raya in goal hoping he moves to Arsenal. Think he'd be first choice and get the nod and 4 Arsenal for those first 3 games looks really tasty. It'd ultimately depend on whether he comes in soon enough though and it's defo a risk with having to move an Arsenal player if/when I'm making a transfer so will see

Anyone else tempted to go with Watkins over Jesus?

On pens, more minutes, slightly better stats (afaik).

Also feels like less of a lottery compared to picking the best Arsenal attacker, given that any of Saka, Jesus, Ode, Martinelli and Trossard will share the goals and assists.

I'll start with Jesus because of fixtures and look at Nkunku, Darwin and Watkins in the first few gameweeks. Want to see Villa a bit first but I think Saka, Øde, Gabriel and Watkins is the way to go eventually

I'm tempted. I think the opening fixture of Forest at home is what's swaying me towards Jesus but over the opening three games it'd be no surprise if Watkins bettered Jesus' score. Like you say, penalties in his favour and more of the main goal scoring threat for his team compared to Jesus, plus I think Watkins is possibly a better finisher.

I feel like FPL may well be decided by those who choose to go with Salah (he starts really well and the 75% of people who don't have him take hits to get him in) or those who choose to go without salah in GW1, he doesn't perform and then 25% of people use transfers to sell and upgrade elsewhere (to the state the 75% of other managers are in).

For me, salah and haaland leaves too little flexibility but I'm tempted to go with him for gw1-3 and then decide to downgrade to an in form midfielder and upgrade my 2nd forward slot to either nkunku Darwin Jesus or Watkins based on form.

The way I see it, people are punting on Darwin or nkunku right now which may not pay off- I think I might stick with salah (proven fpl gem) and then downgrade once it becomes clear who is playing, which teams are on good form etc and this also will coincide with the chelsea and Brighton etc fixture swings

    1. Zalk
      • 14 Years

He always scores in GW1...and then he has Bournemouth, so I'm tempted to go with him aswell. It's actually kind of strange that the best fpl asset over the last 5 seasons is only 25% owned, when nothing has really changed for him.

I found removing Salah frees up so much funds and gives my team more flexiblity and balance. If I go with Salah it means I have to get a 4.5m forward for the bench, forcing me to play 4-4-2. This also involves playing a 4.5m defender each week and I haven't found a decent one I like. Without Salah I can have all of TAA, Mbeumo and Watkins ( or any other 8.0 m Forward ) and that 4.5m defender is now first sub.

I find this too. I think the gap between Salah and the rest of the midfielders - many of whom will score really well over a run of favourable fixtures - is possibly too much? I noticed other games have priced players such as Saka higher, for instance 10.0 in FanTeam which makes it more of a choice really.

Not sure if that makes sense!

        1. AIRMILES
          • 14 Years

I think Saka is really underpriced. When you deduct the 4.5m which is the basic cost of a MID spot, then Saka is 4.0m and Salah is 8.0m, the latter being twice the price of the former.

I'm just conscious of spreading the funds too thin as well, since that approach has led me into needing an early wildcard just to get back to the sort of template squad really early on which is annoying!

Overthinking it as usual I suspect.

Thinking about playing Baldock (CRY) in GW1. Eze looks fantastic, but Palace's attacking stats were really poor last season, and it looks like they're losing Olise as well as Zaha. They can't rely upon one player.

Both are good options. Maddison is nailed on and is a low risk choice. Foden has played well in pre-season but is slightly risky based on Man City rotation, but should hopefully start most games.

    Liverpool lineup v Bayern:
Alisson; TAA, Matip, VVD, Robertson; Szoboszlai, Jones, Mac Allister; Salah, Gakpo, Jota.

Darwin, Diaz, Konate on the bench

Besides Konate > Matip, it wouldn't surprise me if that was their lineup against Chelsea.

The thing with Jota, Diaz, Gakpo and Nuñez for me is I suspect there'll be a lot of in game rotation as well as rotating starters. Pool do well, the two who starts at LW and CF are off early-ish for rest. Pool don't do well the two who starts are off early for changing things up.

I'm on an early WC plan too so don't mind taking a punt on someone like Jota for GWs1-2. Longer term the mins might be more problematic but an attacking double up v BOU could be a nice differential

When he plays, his underlying data often rivals Salah's. So I'm always looking out for signs he's first choice. He's got goals in him.

It's a pipe dream atm though. Hence why I am not going there.

The statistician in me is urging me to play a 5-4-1 formation, based on the fact that every year the leading defenders score more on a points per million basis than any other player in the game. Even more so this year if we take a view that Haaland is perma-captained...

    I could play something like:

    onana areola
    TAA gabriel estu stones shaw
    saka foden rashford eze enciso
    haaland wissa mibuma

    What am I missing?

The dream team formation at the end of the season is almost always 3-4-3, or 3-5-2.
Imagine we had 3 defenders costing 0.5 that would garantee you 2p every game (no more or less). Great for ppm but terrible if you want a lot of points.

    2. Piggs Boson

I wouldn't get too hung up on formations. They might press in a 433, defend in a 4411, and attack in a 3 box 3.

For a defender, only the role in the attacking phase is relevant to us, and Trent will be inverted as a central midfielder. Don't know how deep that midfield role will be with Szoboszlai and Mac Allister though...

Darwin not starting probably due to his lack of pressing which Klopp will need against Bayern.

We could see Darwin used more at home this season for this particular reason.

He will put out a strong team in the first half to test their level against one of the best teams in the world.

The second half may well be about substitutions and giving players minutes.
