Spot The Differential – DJ Campbell & Luke Varney

With such a proliferation of midfield talent, a strong five across the middle will leave many Fantasy Managers with one striker benched for the majority of the season. It makes perfect sense to explore a budget option for this third striker then, but at the same time, this option needs to be one that can at least contribute points when called upon.

The Blackpool pairing of DJ Campbell and Luke Varney are that rare commodity – bargain basement strikers that appear to offer regular starts and the promise of Fantasy returns that more than justify the outlay. Currently priced at just 4.5 and 4.6 in the Fantasy Premier League game, they offer the perfect solution for those Fantasy Managers looking to balance the books to help crowbar Cesc Fabregas back into their lineups.

Varney certainly has the statistical edge on his team mate. The former Charlton striker has returned 2 goals and 4 assists so far this term and his Opta stats appear to show greater potential in both areas. Despite those numbers, Campbell seems to offer the greater security when it comes to a starting role and pitch time. The diminutive striker has started every game since his arrival from Leicester and has completed the 90 minutes in each of them. Varney, in contrast, was on the bench against Blackburn and was subbed against both Newcastle, Chelsea and again this weekend at Birmingham.

You get the feeling that Ian Holloway is a massive fan of Campbell and has faith in him to produce. In my view, barring injury, Campbell will play regardless of form, while Varney has competition for his starting role from Marlon Harewood and Brett Ormerod. There’s no doubting that Campbell’s form is a concern, no goal in his last five starts, has kept him under the radar, but the striker is performing well enough and Holloway is keeping the faith. Only today, reports include quotes from the player himself bemoaning his lack of goals but promising an improvement…

“I feel there is a good run coming on and a few goals on the way, so I just have to keep getting in the right places and fingers crossed it will happen.”

Regardless of your weapon of choice, this is a good time to consider the Blackpool pair. The return of Fabregas as an option in midfield will have bloated the midfield budget and while cheap defensive options are always available, the shift to 3-5-2 as the preferred FPL formation, surely creates a need for a budget option up front. This is compounded by the fact that both Varney and Campbell actually offer potential as Fantasy starters over the mid-term.

Ian Holloway’s side have a very decent run of opponents to come (WBA EVE avl whm WOL bol ) all of which appear to offer the potential of attacking returns. If you can’t find a place for Charlie Adam in your lineup, then one of Campbell or Varney offer the opportunity to capture those returns.

They are also major differentials of course – neither top 2% ownership right now, with Campbell registering a paltry 0.3%. That appears to make them good options to help with the “route to recruit” for Cesc Fabregas, with the promise of some cheeky cheap returns to come over the next month.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Help please mates, already took 4pt hit this gwk for:

    Foster
    Elmo Konch Coleman
    Malouda Fabs Adam Nani
    Drog Carroll Tevez(!)

    Subs: routledge shawx foley

Should I take another 4pt hit to get rid of tevez or stay put? If not, should I play routledge shawx or foley?

I can't see him not playing to be honest. Great form, Owen is injured, Macheda was awful midweek, Sir Alex wouldn't start Bebe against Spurs, and Berbatov is shocking up front on his own.

I don't think he'll be rested - Berba needs someone to do his running for him while he has a cheeky fag, he's not suited to playing up front on his own. Can't see Macheda starting, Owen and Rooney are out, Spurs aren't good enough to require a 5 man midfield against them.

Not sure I'd captain him, though 😉

I think he needs to tap into his current vein of form by starting him, but we all know how Fergie likes to protect players, and he has mentioned a few times that Chich's is young and needs time, there is a reason he was on the bench on Tuesday night, I think he plays this weekend, who knows next weekend.

got to bring in 4.5m defender to fund my Fab entrance this week. Thinking West Ham defender as no need to play him this week and next 3 fixtures look fine although hopefully will not play all 3. I guess the choices are Gabbidon Jacobsson and ANothers. feels like a coin flip - any rationale for going for one over the others? cheers for any help

    hello everyone!

any suggestions on what to do this week with my team?

    hahnemann, (carson),
    dann, coleman, elmo, (givet), (foley),
    adam, dempsey, bale, vdv, nani
    drogba (c), carroll, (tevez)

think i'm pretty sure about bringing fabs in for bale. other options are:

    a) chamakh for tevez, 4 point hit?
    b) chamakh for tevez, arteta for dempsey, 8 point hit?
    c) arteta for dempsey, 4 point hit?

basically, you can see what i'm getting at. really fancy arteta this week (if fit) but then again dempsey is at home to wigan so could be a decent return there. also, other than chamakh for tevez, any other real striking option?

    any suggestions welcome

Bench. Barton Jara and Williamson, also bench Foster. IMO. I am playing jaask over Foster.

Im worried about captaining either of them to be honest. They both seem like they might play 60mins or so before Bendtner and Walcott come on.

I think next time you do it, you should count scores from that gameweek only. Reset the scoring every week. Eliminate bottom whatever amount from lowest scores that gameweek.

    Adam vs VDV

    Who would you play?
    My stats are suggesting Adam.
The captain poll currently has 1 more vote for Adam.
    Adam is at home.
Chance of a penalty for VDV at Old Trafford - pretty much zero.

But I think VDV will make Ferdinand look silly and the chance of scoring is certainly there.

      Which 2?

Gilks and Adam/Varney could be just about ok.

Adam + Varney I think is too much, it would be 1 or the other.

        Adam and Campbell.

Campbell won't be in the XI hardly ever but he actually allows me to have quite a good side with money in the bank still.

Basically as long as he plays 90mins I'll be happy.

Five in midfield every week means I may as well have a cheap 3rd striker.

    something very interestin gi just read on nasri;

It's also worth considering backing Samir Nasri. We were gutted to highlight his goalscoring prowess last weekend only to resist backing him to net at Manchester City. In sparkling form, he duly did so and now has seven goals in his last seven games. He's 5/2 to find the target in this one and we can't back off again. Coral are odds-on, so it's a price that screams value, especially when you consider there's every chance he could be back on penalties following another Cesc Fabregas miss from the spot at Eastlands.

0 % Chance. Fabregas missed one last year too and still remained on them after Stoke game.

RVP will have them again when he returns.

Tevez WILL be back for the Manchester derby. I'm benching him for 2 weeks..

    a writeup --

    http://bit.ly/d4YHBe

I think Tevez will get unflagged around next Friday , after which he will be protected .. I think 0.2 loss tops.. I just don't think there is any other striker out there with guaranteed returns for the next 2 weeks and Tevez if fit, has to be in my team.

chamakh has a chance of good returns, he scores quite frequently at the emirates and has 2 pretty easy fixtures coming up at the emirates.. I did tevez > chamakh which will leave me with 10.8 in the bank when i swap chamakh out again, hopefully tevez will drop 0.2!

will you be taking a hit to get in Chamakh? Even if he scores, for example, see gameweek 4, he scored in a 4-1 win, Arsenal won, but he got 6 points.. hardly a good return

ya i took a 4pt hit for chamakh, i think he will score at least 6 two gwks in a row, more than tevez would on the bench..
