Spot The Differential – DJ Campbell & Luke Varney

With such a proliferation of midfield talent, a strong five across the middle will leave many Fantasy Managers with one striker benched for the majority of the season. It makes perfect sense to explore a budget option for this third striker then, but at the same time, this option needs to be one that can at least contribute points when called upon.

The Blackpool pairing of DJ Campbell and Luke Varney are that rare commodity – bargain basement strikers that appear to offer regular starts and the promise of Fantasy returns that more than justify the outlay. Currently priced at just 4.5 and 4.6 in the Fantasy Premier League game, they offer the perfect solution for those Fantasy Managers looking to balance the books to help crowbar Cesc Fabregas back into their lineups.

Varney certainly has the statistical edge on his team mate. The former Charlton striker has returned 2 goals and 4 assists so far this term and his Opta stats appear to show greater potential in both areas. Despite those numbers, Campbell seems to offer the greater security when it comes to a starting role and pitch time. The diminutive striker has started every game since his arrival from Leicester and has completed the 90 minutes in each of them. Varney, in contrast, was on the bench against Blackburn and was subbed against both Newcastle, Chelsea and again this weekend at Birmingham.

You get the feeling that Ian Holloway is a massive fan of Campbell and has faith in him to produce. In my view, barring injury, Campbell will play regardless of form, while Varney has competition for his starting role from Marlon Harewood and Brett Ormerod. There’s no doubting that Campbell’s form is a concern, no goal in his last five starts, has kept him under the radar, but the striker is performing well enough and Holloway is keeping the faith. Only today, reports include quotes from the player himself bemoaning his lack of goals but promising an improvement…

“I feel there is a good run coming on and a few goals on the way, so I just have to keep getting in the right places and fingers crossed it will happen.”

Regardless of your weapon of choice, this is a good time to consider the Blackpool pair. The return of Fabregas as an option in midfield will have bloated the midfield budget and while cheap defensive options are always available, the shift to 3-5-2 as the preferred FPL formation, surely creates a need for a budget option up front. This is compounded by the fact that both Varney and Campbell actually offer potential as Fantasy starters over the mid-term.

Ian Holloway’s side have a very decent run of opponents to come (WBA EVE avl whm WOL bol ) all of which appear to offer the potential of attacking returns. If you can’t find a place for Charlie Adam in your lineup, then one of Campbell or Varney offer the opportunity to capture those returns.

They are also major differentials of course – neither top 2% ownership right now, with Campbell registering a paltry 0.3%. That appears to make them good options to help with the “route to recruit” for Cesc Fabregas, with the promise of some cheeky cheap returns to come over the next month.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This is my concern, I can only see value in a 4 pointer for an Arsenal striker to replace Tevez.

However, 4 pointer for a 10 minute sub cameo is bad darts.

Bendtner to get game time off the bench. I'd say Chamakh is still a starter for a very few gameweeks. Chamakh does what Bendtner doesn't, grafts very hard for the team. He really puts a shift in.

wandering how rotation of cheap goalkeepers has gone given the lack of cleansheets. Anyone beat cech and harts 50 points?

take away 4 points for every time you transfered and maybe you could have got another 5-10 points with the extra mil??? I went with hart.

Problem with rotation is you have to make the correct call as well, ie last wek I played Carson 0 pts and left Robbo on the bench, 5pts! Same dilemma this week.

Benched a penalty save and played an own goal (off the post after a good save) and red card (for a bitchslap from a keeper who probably hadn't even had a yellow in about 20 years of playing)during that time but there's still no excuse. I have an awful combination - I've always poo pooed people who buy keepers over 4.5m too which makes it worse

I played wildcard really early and got hart in before price rise just in case i really needed him. think i did well as it gave me man city def cover but now kolarov is coming back i might have a shuffle.

How's it going, in a bit of a precarious poition this week as im lined up as:

    Robinson (Carson)
    Bosingwa, Elmo, Dann, Coleman
Nani, Fabregas(c), van der Vaart, Ferguson
    Berbatov, Drogba

    Subs: Faye, (Tevez & Albrighton)
    .4m in the bank.

Made my transfers already so surely not worth taking 4points to make another? Bought Tevez for 10.5 (now 11) so have time to wait on injury news and wouldnt get rid if he only misses Wolves.

    Suggestions/comments always appreciated.

I'm jettisoning Malouda on Sat am for the next 2 weeks in a straight swap for Fab [fitness permitting] & working Malouda back into the 5th MID spot in GW12 at the expense of Chamakh.

Is it worth swapping [Malouda & Nani] for [Fabregas & Essien]. It's a 4 point hit to do this week, so I am tempted to wait for next week. Although if I make the change i'll captain Fab instead of Drogba. All help & comments welcome.

I don't think so. Nani has a couple of home games and is playing really well, don't think getting rid of him for a hit is a good idea.

My other choice would be Richards for Coleman and Molouda for Fab - any better or still no?

Chamakh vs Berbatov is a hard choice in replacement of Tevez. Chamakh has the better next 3 games but could easily be benched or taken off early for Bendtner.

Nearly all my mini league has Berbatov and none have CHamakh although that might change this week considering a lot have Tevez too.

    Decisions decisions decisions

Bendy will get time when Arsenal leads.
RVP is due in 1 week and that will cut into Cham time

Anyone else going balls out on the midfield at the expense of only 1 "top tier" striker?
I'v got Malouda Nani Fabs VDV and Nasri, but only Drogs Odemwingie and Elmander up front. Will probably do Nasri to N'Zogbia when Arsenals fixtures dry up a bit.

    1. Do we think chico will start at the weekend?
    2. Do we think odemwingie will start?
    3. Who would you replace tevez with?
    4. Arteta or nasri or another (considering i already have cesc, vdv, nani, brunt)?

    Cheers my dears
