Spot The Differential – DJ Campbell & Luke Varney

With such a proliferation of midfield talent, a strong five across the middle will leave many Fantasy Managers with one striker benched for the majority of the season. It makes perfect sense to explore a budget option for this third striker then, but at the same time, this option needs to be one that can at least contribute points when called upon.

The Blackpool pairing of DJ Campbell and Luke Varney are that rare commodity – bargain basement strikers that appear to offer regular starts and the promise of Fantasy returns that more than justify the outlay. Currently priced at just 4.5 and 4.6 in the Fantasy Premier League game, they offer the perfect solution for those Fantasy Managers looking to balance the books to help crowbar Cesc Fabregas back into their lineups.

Varney certainly has the statistical edge on his team mate. The former Charlton striker has returned 2 goals and 4 assists so far this term and his Opta stats appear to show greater potential in both areas. Despite those numbers, Campbell seems to offer the greater security when it comes to a starting role and pitch time. The diminutive striker has started every game since his arrival from Leicester and has completed the 90 minutes in each of them. Varney, in contrast, was on the bench against Blackburn and was subbed against both Newcastle, Chelsea and again this weekend at Birmingham.

You get the feeling that Ian Holloway is a massive fan of Campbell and has faith in him to produce. In my view, barring injury, Campbell will play regardless of form, while Varney has competition for his starting role from Marlon Harewood and Brett Ormerod. There’s no doubting that Campbell’s form is a concern, no goal in his last five starts, has kept him under the radar, but the striker is performing well enough and Holloway is keeping the faith. Only today, reports include quotes from the player himself bemoaning his lack of goals but promising an improvement…

“I feel there is a good run coming on and a few goals on the way, so I just have to keep getting in the right places and fingers crossed it will happen.”

Regardless of your weapon of choice, this is a good time to consider the Blackpool pair. The return of Fabregas as an option in midfield will have bloated the midfield budget and while cheap defensive options are always available, the shift to 3-5-2 as the preferred FPL formation, surely creates a need for a budget option up front. This is compounded by the fact that both Varney and Campbell actually offer potential as Fantasy starters over the mid-term.

Ian Holloway’s side have a very decent run of opponents to come (WBA EVE avl whm WOL bol ) all of which appear to offer the potential of attacking returns. If you can’t find a place for Charlie Adam in your lineup, then one of Campbell or Varney offer the opportunity to capture those returns.

They are also major differentials of course – neither top 2% ownership right now, with Campbell registering a paltry 0.3%. That appears to make them good options to help with the “route to recruit” for Cesc Fabregas, with the promise of some cheeky cheap returns to come over the next month.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Can anyone please help me answer this question? If a player plays in a Europa League match would he be cup tied if transferred to a team in CL?

    Should I do option:
    A) Bale and Tevez > Fabregas and Zigic
    B) Bale and Tevez > Fabregas and Dembele
    (Have 6.5 for the striker.)

    Here's my setup:
    Foster (Stockdale)
Elmo, Jara, Coleman, Shawcross (, Foley)
    Fab, Malouda, VDV, Nani, (Albrighton)
    Drogba, Berbatov (Odemwingie)
    1.2 million in the bank

I've no idea what to do, some thoughts are:
    a) Nasri in, Malouda out
    b) Nasri in, VDV out
    c) Bosingwa in, Shawcross out
    d) a + c
    any thoughts, or other suggestions?

I went with Obinna last week, and Avram Grant thought it was a good idea to move him into a midfield role! Cost me some points, and West Ham the win.

Don't want to risk him starting in midfield again this week, with Arsenal up.

Had a peek at the official City website. Nothing to be found regarding Tevez expected back on Monday.

This whole min-saga has shades of Fabregas last season. When he played Villa racking up some delicious points. Wasn't expected to participate in the game. The points were all the sweeter for it.

Even if he is out for two games. For me, i'd just park him on the bench.

That now looks precarious on both counts - Tevez's imminent return to training and Bendtner breathing down Chamakh's neck (not a pleasant thought).

Whats the deal with Adam, do we reckon he's gonna get a full game against West Brom?. Thinking of captaining him as could be a good differential.

Can someone please Check My Sanity?

My Mids and Forward this week are:

Nanny, Fabregas, Adam, Van Der Vaart, Malouda,

    Drogba, Chamakh, Carroll.

Who is the one person I bench this week? Leaning towards VDV to sit this one out? Am I right? Comments would be appreciated.

Tevez, Albrighton and Berbatov out for Drogba, Fabregas and 4.3 striker (maybe Harewood) for 12 pt hit.

And then next week downgrade Enrique for Simpson and upgrade the 4.3 striker to a 4.9 one for 4 pt hit.

    Am i mad?

    Team is:
    Cech, Gilks
Coleman, Crainey, R Johnson, Jara, Enrique
    Malouda, VdV, Nasri, Nani, Albrighton
    Tevez, Berbatov, Carroll

    Cheers.

BEcause if i only replace Albrighton and Tevez, i only have 8,1 for a striker+Fabregas.
And i think i'm better with Drogba+Carroll+4.3 striker than with Berbatov+Carroll+8,1 striker.

Wich one for 8,1 do you suggest? Elmander?

Sorry can't work it out,if you link your team it may help, but Fabs has got to earn you a lot to make 12pt hit pay. Good luck with it. 🙂

If you are sacraficing Tevez for the longer term and you need to bin him to get Fabs, then I'd edge towards B, but I'm not convinced by either Tevez replacement.

I can get fabs in for malouda, but was going to use tevez out to my advantage. He's a lot of cash to be sunning it in Argie when either replacement could and prob will make up the points hit. How I will get the freak back is another matter however.

    REPOST

Should I take another 4 point hit to take Tevez out? Already on -4 this week with this line up…

    Al Habsi

    Williamson, Elmo, Jara

Malouda, Fabregas (c), Bale, Nzogbia, Nani

    Drogba, Carroll

    (Foster, Faye, Jones, TEVEZ)

    Thoughts?

Looks like a good team without Tevez, wouldn't bother taking another hit this week, Tevez will be back soon

      It all depends:)
If you like Tevez in your team and would want him back when fit, then keep him. If you were planning on getting rid of him anyway, now might be a good time. With that said, your starting eleven does look rather good already, so I guess another factor is: who would you trade him for? Aren't that many good strikers around, so I guess your team would benefit more from getting e.g. A.Cole, which would imply Tevez+Defender out, A. Cole+cheap striker in. That will cost you 8 points, maybe wait till next week and take a 4-point hit then..?

I've had to go for it as I'm out tomorrow. What do you guys think?

    OUT - M Richards/Dempsey/Tevez
    IN - Coleman/Fabregas/Chico (for a 4PH)

I have to set my team now so it's:
    Krul
    Konchesky/Coleman/Elmo
    Nani/VDV/Fab(c)/Malouda
    Carroll/Drogba/Chico

    Subs:Foster/Faye/Alex/Albrighton

Bit nervous on getting rid of Tevez but I had to have Fab!

Think you did good. Tevez is a bit of a risk at the moment, so if you decide to get him later he'll probably drop a few points by then.

I was going to all along even if it was 2/3 weeks as I have got too much value locked up in him and it's not worth the hit. I think a few posters here want him but don't have him are urging to sell so his value drops but that is to be expected.
That's the beauty of subs in this game - step up to the plate Mr Adam.
