Scout Notes

Tuesday’s Scout Notes – Gameweek Twenty Two

Some brilliance from Nani and a typically cheeky finish from the “Little Pea” is just enough for United to grind down Stoke’s resistance at Old Trafford. Fulham claw their way back up the table as they brush past the injury-ravaged Baggies at the Cottage, while Birmingham do a job on Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, despite another Charlie Adam inspired attacking display…

Alex Ferguson sprung a couple of surprises in his starting lineup – Twitter fan, Rio Ferdinand was rested ahead of Sunday’s looming FA Cup clash with Liverpool, while Edwin van der Sar was again missing in goal with illness blamed for his absence. Wayne Rooney was the big absentee however – the ankle injury sustained late on against West Brom kept him out of this one. Javier Hernandez took his place, Chris Smalling assumed the role alongside Nemanja Vidic in defence.

Once again United won the game in second gear – rarely threatening to put the game beyond Stoke, despite the visitors affording them room to exploit their talents – particularly in the first-half. Nani enjoyed a strong game and emphasised his Fantasy value by notching his sixth goal and eleventh assist of the season; with 2 Bonus also arriving at his door, this was the sixth time that Nani has recorded double figures for FPL returns.

Rooney’s absence had a predictable effect on Dimitar Berbatov’s goal threat. Our Members can see for themselves that the Bulgarian often came deeper to start the play and his “Touches” and “Passes” confirm that he was heavily involved. With just one attempt on goal however, Berbatov was again happy to forgo opportunities to score without Rooney’s prompting and feeding in tandem. Hernandez had far fewer touches, made fewer passes but had 3 attempts on goal, one of which was his smart, improvised finish for the opening goal which help to earn him 3 Bonus Points.

Ian Holloway handed a start to Matt Phillips who was rewarded for a number of eye-catching displays from the bench. Elsewhere, Blackpool lined up as expected in a 4-3-3 formation.

Charlie Adam offered some reward for the faith put in him by FPL Managers; the Scot dominated the game for long periods from the middle of the park and only the post denied him a goal in a performance that was again acknowledged with FPL Bonus Points.

Alex McLeish dropped Jean Beausejour to his bench and handed starts to Keith Fahey and Alexander Hleb as Lee Bowyer began his three-match ban. The inclusion of Hleb certainly paid off as the Belarusian grabbed his first Premier League goal for the Blues, after a Stephen Crainey error. Hleb obviously has bags of ability and could be worth monitoring as he looks to find some consistency after struggling with injury and form.

Popular FPL defender had a Scott Dann grabbed the winning goal for Birmingham in the 89th minute, lifting them out of the relegation places and giving Birmingham their first win at Blackpool since 1960. Dann has now picked-up 67 FPL points this season a good return for a defender priced at just £4.8 million and this hasn’t gone unnoticed amongst FPL managers with an ownership of 10.4%.

Birimingham recorded their first away win of the season, a record that Birmingham-owning FPL Managers will be pleased to see the back of. Alex McLeish was also unsurprisingly jubilant with the outcome

“I’m absolutely delighted to win and mostly because it was away from home. It means people will stop asking about the away record. It is only one [win] in six months yet it is three valuable points.”

Mark Hughes opted for Senegalese striker Diomansy Kamara to spearhead his attack and this was the only change to the Fulham side which lost to Tottenham on New Year’s Day, the forward took the place of Andy Johnson in the lone striker role as the Welshman once again opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation.

Pre-match reports seemed to suggest that striker and Mousa Dembele would recover from an ankle injury and return to the line-up, but it appears that the Belgian striker failed to prove his fitness in time for the kick-off. Expect the player to be back in action for the next Premier League clash with Wigan on January 15, if not sooner in the FA Cup against Peterborough on Saturday.

FPL high-flyers Clint Dempsey and Brede Hangeland continued to prove their worth for both Fulham and Fantasy Managers by impressing a goal each. But it was Simon Davies who really won the FPL plaudits, notching-up a Gameweek total of 17 including: 1 goal, 2 assists and 3 bonus points.

James Hurst and Gianni Zuiverloon came into the West Brom defence in what was an otherwise unchanged starting line-up. They replace Steven Reid, who will be ruled out for six weeks after tearing his cartilage in Saturday’s defeat by Manchester United, and Ibanez Pablo who also suffered an ankle knock in the same game.

West Brom defender Marek Cech limped off after 33 minutes with a knock to be replaced by Nicky Shorey. The full extent of the injury is unclear and anything serious will come as a massive blow to a battered Baggies defence that, as well as those mentioned above, is already missing Gabriel Tamas through suspension and Jonas Olsson with an Achilles injury.

I think my squad is fairly decent, Hendersen and Fabs hitting form, Drogba has been scoring fantasy points fairly regularly, and the rest of the supporting cast are doing alright. No Blackpool or Liverpool because I don't think they'll do very well over the double gameweeks, and don't want to be stuck with average players after this gameweek. It's different to most peoples but i'm not one to blindy follow value changes in the hope that price = form.

When does this good run start?

They have 2 decent GWs to come, but after that:
CHELSEA stoke TOTTENHAM everton arsenal LIVERPOOL man city

Sorry but I fail to see the nice run here.

I kinda thought chelsea and stoke was easy...maybe not.
I'd buy him even if they didn't have an ok run if he's gonna be playing like a midfielder (Coleman, anyone?)

Well, if you have Sunderland players now, they have 2 decent games so could be worth keeping.

But for bringing Sund players in, it would be for 2 games only really, so if your Wild Card was being used say GW25, it may be ok.

So if you have Welbeck, I'd probably keep.

I can't agree with that one.

Yes, they have a decent home record, but their home games coming up soon are the hardest they'll get all season - Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool. And quite a lot of away games sandwiched in.

There's much better options after Sunderland have got the Newcastle - Blackpool out of the way.

It wouldn't matter if the clock was with you though. It would only cease to be relevant if you were in a different place than the clock.

Exactly, so that point where you cease to travel forwards and before you travel backwards time should cease to exist temporarily a clock with no hands would be useful in indicating that there is no time.

That's like saying when a fly hits a car windscreen, the fly is travelling with enough force to stop the car, because if you could divide it to an almost immesurable degree there is a point in time where neither the car nor the fly have moved. Going down to planck distances.

In reality, neither has stopped moving, and in reality time has not stopped in the transition between moving forward and backwards in time. Time is still the same for the traveller, even if it looks to an observer that someone has stopped and started moving backwards in time.

of course, but the example doesn't translate specifically to time, except the case that it looks like something which is not happening is, because of what the observer sees.

But the person with the clock will 'observe' it as such though surely - like when a train quickly goes into reverse from going forward there is a brief period where the train is stopped. That is potentially what it would be like no?

Nope, if you sat down to eat your sandwich during the time you were "paused", you wouldn't end up with both a whole sandwich and no sandwich.

To you, the person observing you would be going like the absolute clappers, their life could be over in the blink of an eye, but if you checked your watch, it would still be ticking along.

Your relative time would be unaffected.

Ah but that is a different perspective surely? You are considering it from an outside observer looking at our man with the clock, I am looking at purely from the man with the clocks perspective.

Well, I guess if I am the observer, and you have the clock (and are the one "paused"), then yes to you, my time would be carrying on regardless while you were stopped. So if you stayed at your point in time, 5 seconds to me would be meaningless to you, and 5 seconds to you would be an eternity to me.

With that regard, time would be pretty meaningless from each others perspective. But it wouldn't cease to exist.

Why would they want Beckham when they have enough attacking options?

A solid defender who takes no prisoners or a Vierra/Keene type mid is what they desperately need. Not some media whore on the last few holes of the back nine of his career.

Massively overrated player imo, both those sides you mention do have injury prone centre backs though so I guess he could do a job as a back up player.

He's better than Squillaci or that other Koscienly (sp?) chap, arguably better than Djourou too. He's not as good as Woodgate or King but far more reliable fitness wise, he is pretty much on a par with Dawson.
        I think he's pretty handy.

Yeah I don't really agree that he's better than those players. Although Squillaci has looked dodgy to be fair.

My guess is that both Wenger and Redknapp would think that there are equally good centre backs to find at a cheaper price.

anyone else waiting for GW27 for their WC...seems to be the best week for doubles etc + most of the jan transfer window will be done. How annoying, for instance, would it be if you based your team around Fab, then he tootled off to Barca.

I've got my first WC spare as well...could even create a team just for that week, then WC again to pick for rest of season...?!

He's just the new kid on the block, so is getting pushed around a bit and having his price-tag quotes.

14m Paulo Ferriera, 15m Nicolas Anelka, 24m Didier Drogba, 9m Salomon Kalou and 16m John Obi Mikel aren't playing much better.

Apparently we made a bid for Kalou a couple of summers ago.

Unfortunately, Einstein Scolari turned it down so we went and bought Arshavin in the next transfer window.

He still did a very good job for us... Bossed the midfield and was one of the main reasons for our excellent form towards the end of last season. Genuinely couldn't believe it when we let him go in the summer, he did more than enough last season to deserve a new contract.

And he had to sacrifice his natural game for the Fatster.

Who is the player you don't have that you fear the most week in week out?

For me its Bale. I've had him in my team twice with regular 2-5pt returns then a mega 15 pt only occasionally. I no longer have him, but seeing as nearly six out of ten teams have him a Bale goal spree equals a tumble down the rankings.

I too fear Fabregas, but I consider him one of mine in spirit as he will be back with me again soon, so I quite enjoy fearing him...makes me want him more.

I agree about Berbatov, I won't have him because of games like last night where he only gets 2pt, but alsoagree that those Bulgarian goalfests really hurt.

Fabregas but only this week, as he'll be in my team from then on. Other than that only really Bebratrov I fear when Rooney is playing.

At the moment it's really hard to see a way to get Fabs in with the also-excellent VdV, Bale and Nani along with a big striker.

I could certainly ship out Vidic and Baines (who won't be up to much without Cahill one assumes), but it's a stretch.

Well I was just playing around and came up with
            Foster, Gordon
            Djourou, Dawson, Rafael, Kolarov, Crainey
            Adam, N'Zogbia, VdV, Nani, Fabregas
            Rooney, Carroll, Tevez

Now this in all likelihood will NOT be my wildcard team (no Chelsea's for a start) but still is a pretty meatball

VDV scared me so much I bought him. His pts hauls are a thing of beauty.

I know. I should really get him in. There is always someone I want more though, and it has NOT worked out well 🙂

look to one side while holding fist in front of mouth, then pull face like you've bitten a wasp whilst waving your other hand to ward off anyone watching.
