Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Everton

Reading’s surprise 1-0 FA Cup win at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening gave the green light to yet another double gameweek, with Everton now facing two league games in the next seven days. Having beaten holders Chelsea in the previous round, David Moyes’ side were odds-on favourites to progress, but a thoroughly downbeat Toffees boss admitted post-match:

”We let the supporters down, we didn’t play well enough and we got what we deserved. We had to chase the game and got more desperate as the game went on and we didn’t have enough to open them up. “

Moyes will be looking for a big response from his side, then, as they travel to St James’ Park this Saturday afternoon before facing Carling Cup holders Birmingham City at Goodison next Wednesday evening.

The Prospects

Everton’s 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend will no doubt have Fantasy Managers mulling over defensive options but it’s really only papered over the cracks of their defensive fragility; they have chalked up just two clean sheets in their last seventeen league games, Sunderland match inclusive. Before the game with Steve Bruce’s side, Everton had played seven league matches since the turn of the year and conceded two or more goals in six of them.

Despite a poor showing this season, the competitive nature of the Premier League means Everton’s season still hangs in the balance; a win at Newcastle would leave them just three points behind sixth-placed Merseyside rivals Liverpool but, on the other hand, Moyes’ side sit just five points above the drop zone. As Arsenal recently discovered, winning at St James’ Park is not at all straightforward and Alan Pardew has suffered just one loss in the last nine league games as Newcastle boss. Everton have only averaged one goal per game away from home, too.

Birmingham approach their own double gameweek just two points off the drop zone, albeit with two games in hand over their relegation rivals. With the Carling Cup win under their belt, Alex McLeish’s side will be fired up for the Goodison visit and will be looking to replicate the form that has seen them win two of their last three on the road. Despite their poor FA Cup showing, Everton have been in good scoring form at home of late, netting two or more goals in each of their last four home league games.

The Likely Lads

The number of assists Leighton Baines racks up negates his lack of clean sheets; the left-back has managed nine already this season, the sixth highest total in the league. Put into perspective, the second highest number of assists by a defender is four. Factor his set-piece duties into the equation, and it’s no real surprise that Baines is the fourth highest-scoring defender in FPL to date.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has allowed the young Irishman to garner attacking points (3 goals, 3 assists) which, like Baines, means he hasn‘t suffered too badly from the minimal defensive returns. The fact that he’s over £2m cheaper than Baines sees Coleman with the higher ownership of the two. Having been hauled off on 45 minutes of the Reading Cup tie however, there is a nagging doubt that Coleman will start in both of Everton’s two fixtures – he is certainly overdue a rest.

In light of injuries to Marouanne Fellaini and Tim Cahill, the onus is firmly on Mikel Arteta to step up and be counted, following a disappointing season for the Spaniard; although he’s missed just four league games this season, Arteta has picked up just 81 FPL points. Despite this, plenty investment will surely follow, with Fantasy Managers pinning their hopes on the playmaker’s shoulders.

There’s no doubting the quality of Louis Saha -he’s grabbed six goals in his last five league games- but the Frenchman’s inability to steer clear makes him an infuriating Fantasy Option. Following a slow start to his career on Merseyside, Jermaine Beckford has started to show a consistency in the top-flight (he’s scored four in his last five league games) and priced at just £5.0m, could be a real bargain if he continues his recent form. We just have to hope that the traffic doesn’t hold him up.

Cheeky Punts

Victor Anichebe’s return from injury gives Everton a couple of options; he can provide competition for Seamus Coleman for that right midfield slot but, alternatively, injuries to Everton’s attacking options may see Anichebe find some time up front. Everton lined up in a 4-5-1 for the Reading game but Moyes has been fielding 4-4-2 lately, and if either Saha or Beckford (or both) miss either (or both) of the upcoming games, he could be the beneficiary.

If Moyes’ front two are fit and available, however, Jack Rodwell could also be an alternative choice; with the Toffees central midfield so depleted at present, there’s every likelihood he’ll take part in both games and offer potential low the price bracket. Leon Osman is another risky temptation – he fired in more efforts on goal than any of Everton’s midfield against Sunderland and set up three goalscoring efforts for team-mates.

    At the moment I have:

    Barton (doubt)
    Fabregas (out)
    Odemwingie (rotation)
    Adam (out)
    Rafael (rotation)

Who are my main concerns coming into this gameweek. However, I only have a bit of money left in my bank and only one free transfer and the only change I can think of doing is Rafael to Distin and playing 5 defenders.

My team is linked, what would anyone recommend? I can't see any changes with my limited money being worthy of a 4 point hit but even with that change I'd be down to 9 players if Odemwingie and Barton don't play.

Hardly - that game on Tuesday was cracking, an outsider wins the Carling Cup in a dramatic finish. I know it's not the PL but it will give Brum a bit of continental fame (shudders).. Kenny V Fergie to come...I'm failing to see any negatives.

Malouda was painfully bad in the week, and we looked much better when Zhirkov came on. Agreed on the favoured position too, he's barely had a chance to play there in his Chelsea career.

Torres will start and will score. 😉

If/when we go two goals up, and Torres hasn't scored, then the side will try their hardest to engineer it so he scores. Him getting up and running in terms of goals is crucial for the rest of our season and a game against Blackpool, especially without Adam, is a perfect opportunity for him to score.

It's a tough one to call to be honest... Drogba was undoubtedly more influential than Anelka on Tuesday (he had more touches in his 25 minutes than Anelka did in 65) but Carlo's talk about Anelka getting more space in the away games seems to hint that he favours Nico in these games.

City at home is our next league game after Blackpool, I reckon Drogba will start that.

Blackpool's main weakness is there fullbacks and the lack of support they get from their wide men. Going narrow with three up top and Essien-Lampard-Ramires behind wouldn't be a great move IMO.

very true but now they would have problem in ball retnetion and distribution too after adam's card...and whom do we have for the width in the right hand syd?Ramires isnt a natural winger...in the first half agasnt man u we suffered mainly ramires was put over there and naturally he adrifted a lot resulting in creating alot of space for evra and nani....the best would be playing narrow as we have very good box-box midfielders in essein and ramires...essein ball holding was brilliant in the 2nd half agaisnt man u 😉

in one of my patented odd punts, i had a go with Dzeko last week- in retrospect very silly as fulham have been tight away all season and completely forgot about sparly and mankini.

however, if you lot had Dzeko, being as he'll almost defo start this weekend...would yis lose him to get money for Lampard/drogba? Just wondering...doubt ill move him on, but hes tying up 9 million squashers

depends if it would involve many hits. if you can ship him and get lampard and someone else for -4 or less then i'd go for it.
don't rate Dzeko at all as an FPL prospect atm.

Nah, he was like a shite poor man's version of Tino Asprilla. Now and again he'd have a stormer where he would crack in a couple of goal, but then he'd do nothing for weeks. Very lazy. Wouldn't touch him with a bargepole now.

Just watch him score 6 over the double gameweek now I've said that 🙂

Im surprised Attila. I have always followed Newcastle as my second team, and although I agree he was very frustrating at times, when fit, he contributed well. Did score a good ratio of goals.

28 goals in 88 appearances? Not that good to me. As I said above, when he could be arsed he was pretty explosive but too often he'd do nothing and contribute sod all. He's on his third club in as many seasons since leaving Newcastle, that speaks volumes.

Tino was twenty times the player.
Although he only got 9 goals in 48 league appearances you have to bear in mind that he was generally used as a substitute for all his first season and a good portion of his second.
He also scored 9 goals in 11 champions league appearances for Newcastle, including that amazing hattrick against a very strong Barca team.

I actually love Asprilla, just trying to make the point that 28 goals in 88 appearances is a very good return for a striker in a struggling team imo.

Do everybody read the news on Kolo Toure? This info has made me worry about Drogba. Kolo had malaria before and he never became the same player he was before. That is why he tried to use doping. I bet he couldn't stand to fell back with his fitness and he tried something illegal. This means and Drogba will never be the same player he was before the malaria.

      Wow talk about a leap!
Kolo Toure gets caught doping* = Drogba will start doping = he will never be the same player again.

      *
This is pertinent from the article:
The World Anti-Doping Agency defines a specified substance as one that is "more susceptible to a credible, non-doping explanation".

I don't think that Drogba will start with doping, just think that he never will be the same player he was. To bad cause he was unstoppable. One of the reason we fall apart mid-season.

He has been battling malaria all season and lets face it, he is knocking on a bit so obviously his potential has dropped. I cannot see the connection between Kolo Toure getting caught potentially doping and Drogba's potential
