Digest

The Digest – Gameweek Eight

A double Dutch weekend, rescued for some by the elegant brilliance of the Arsenal skipper, after Alex Ferguson had conspired to baffle us by attacking Liverpool with a blunt instrument. With such unpredictable madness afoot, even the brawn and bluster on sale in the Potteries is beginning to appeal…

The Player

The build-up to the weekend was dominated by talk of Robin Van Persie and merits of trading from Wayne Rooney to the Arsenal skipper. On Sunday, Van Persie’s performance compounded the misery of those who held firm on Rooney, only to see their man twiddling his medically enhanced fringe on the bench at Anfield.

The Dutchman’s one-man show in Arsenal’s stuttering 2-1 victory over Sunderland underlined his potential to rival Rooney and City’s Sergio Aguero for the Golden Boot, cementing a place in our Fantasy forward lines. The opening goal after less than 30 seconds hinted at an avalanche that never quite arrived; nevertheless Van Persie was unfortunate not to add to his tally with a turn and chip of Bergkamp-like brilliance – the Emirates woodwork denying him a coup de grâce. Van Persie had his match-defining moment, however, his beautifully flighted deadball effort instantly dismissed Seb Larsson’s own quality free-kick as inconsequential – Arsenal had their three points and Van Persie had delivered on his promise.

Having promoted him to the top of Watchlist last week, we were quick to push him above the Manchester duo for the next few gameweeks. Both Rooney and Aguero square up this weekend, whilst Van Persie has another Emirates encounter to size up. Stoke will likely provide a significant obstacle, but, on Sunday’s evidence, those who choose to ignore the Dutchman again will go into gameweek nine feeling ill at ease at the prospect of another rich return for the Arsenal maestro.

The Team

While City powered their way to the pinnacle and Newcastle defended their unbeaten record like their Geordie brethren protecting a pint, our vote goes to a team gradually emerging as a Fantasy force. Stoke’s 2-0 win over Fulham at the Britannia was never in doubt – they simply swamped their opponents with a relentless and powerful showing. Fulham we’re bullied; given no time to settle and produce the kind of cultured flourishes that had Neil Warnock spitting out excuses following his side’s 6-0 slaying at the Cottage.

Stoke were a monster. Tony Pulis’ rigidly regimented unit have now conceded just a single goal in four home matches, emphasising the value of their defensive assets. The flipside of this is that, in attacking terms, they continue to struggle with just 4 goals scored at the Britannia although, with Matt Etherington demonstrating intent with two assists and Jermaine Pennant remaining fit (for now) on the opposite flank, prospects may improve.

A trip to the Emirates next weekend will be a test of Stoke’s progress and Arsenal’s ability to play through the most muscular and stubborn of opponents. Following that however, Stoke have three home matches in four which promise to cement a placing in the top reaches of the table. Newcastle, QPR and Blackburn all visit the Britannia before the end of November and, with a trip to Bolton amongst that group, Pulis will have his sights set on four positive results to take them into December and the Christmas programme. Fantasy managers will surely be taking note and preparing for an acquisition.

The Talking Point

Alex Ferguson appears to be playing some kind of rotation roulette with Roberto Mancini. It’s as if they’re competing to see who can put together the most expensive bench lineup and still fetch the three points. While Sir Alex saw fit to omit Rooney, Nani and Anderson from his teamsheet for the clash with arch-rivals Liverpool, Mancini looked to better him by preserving the talents of David Silva, Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko with Villa in town.

For Fantasy managers, this recent trend creates a nightmarish scenario. Clearly, around Champions League fixtures, we have to ready ourselves for this rest and rotation to continue, for millions of our Fantasy talent to go to waste or be limited to a 20-minute cameo.

Suddenly a decent bench who can actually contribute some points to our gameweek effort might be the way to go. It’s surely foolhardy to risk going into a gameweek without the likes of Silva and Nani and yet, if Ferguson and Mancini persist with their policy around crucial European fixtures, we have to presume that this weekend’s disappointment will kick us in the Balotellis again. We need to be ready for next time; time to shift Shane Ferguson perhaps? I know this bloke down at Wigan who’s good for a couple of points every week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So I know the answer to this before I ask it, but Sturridge is pretty much guaranteed minutes, right? With his form? Worried about when Torres is back in the frame but want to bring him in.

Sturridge has been playing on the right of a front 3 - unless AVB plans to play Torres and Drogba, which I doubt, Torres shouldn't affect Sturridge's chances of playing too much.

What are thoughts on Suarez compared to Sturridge? I have Suarez and was planning on keeping him for his 3 good games but now I'm tempted to take him out for Sturridge who also has good fixtures. With the additional money I can bring in VDV for SWP this week for a 4 point hit or next week when I have no other transfers in mind. Sturridge and VDV both look like rising tonight.

Yeah it feels like there are about 6-7 must-have strikers at the moment but only three slots available. I can see the logic in bringing in Suarez as the potential is there to return big. If you want to captain him then trust your instinct and go for it.

Jon Walters looks tasty after this gameweek. At 6mil, playing OOP, taking Stoke's penaltys, and having not missed a minute so far this season, he could be a good buy. Little stumped as to why there's not much mention of him on here. I put it down to the opinion of him not being a very 'fashionable' player i.e. people would rather buy the likes of SWP, Brunt etc.

I'd put it down to the fact that stoke don't score very much and he isn't prolific.

but tbh, he is mentioned a bit anyhow on these pages.

Yep, I agree. I think Walters gets a really hard time on this site. Saying that I only watch Stoke on MOTD so maybe others (and Stoke fans in particular) would have something else to offer.
Great run of fixtures for Stoke from GW10 and he is ne I'm considering.
He was brilliant in his cameo for Ireland last week also

I agree. Until he did something this gw very little was said about him. hes in my team and i wouldnt be without him. last season he scored six, made a few assists, and played for a period of time on the right wing to begin with and was in and out of their team. he is established as their striker of choice now and an absolute bargain to me. obviously gets a few clean sheet points too

I had a big rant about how no one should have last week. Everyone talking up his fixtures blah blah. I'd prob rather keep the 0.8 and have Ferguson. At least there's no disappointment! Never had him, never will! Hype

I'd been defending Moses for weeks until this weekend ('he's been playing well, far up the field etc'), but Wigan are such a useless, boring side who look incapable of scoring goals. He can warm my bench this week but he's out for Walters next week barring any injuries.

I'm in the process of getting rid of some deadweight. Heres my current team for GW 9,

    Krul
    Bosingwa Simpson Dyer
    Nani Silva Taarabt Cabaye
    RVP (c) Rooney Suarez
    SUBS: Vorm, Dyer, DeLaet, Barnett

So I want to bring in Enrique for De Laet and bring in a 5.3 m mid for Taarabt...

    Krul
    Bosingwa Simpson, Enrique
    Nani Silva X Cabaye
    RVP (c) Rooney Suarez
SUBS: Vorm, Dyer, DeLaet, Barnett, Dyer

    The question I ask is..who is X???

Cleverley. Not fit for this gw but if you are not requiring them the coming fixture and want someone for the long haul hes an option. May even come on a sub this week. I see man u playing ferguson with anderson and cleverly as a three for a lot of the home games

Very few options for 5.3 or less and you already have Dyer. Bannan at Villa has had a couple of good games but he isn't nailed on. Moses is nailed on but consistently gets 2's. I'm not sure which one but maybe one of the Norwich midfielders could be your Mister X.

It's your team, your decision but I disagree. Villa's fixtures are about equal to Chelsea's. Gabby isn't the star of the team, Bent is. He is simply the player in form much like Sturridge is at Chelsea. Torres will replace Drogba and the first choice front 3 will be Mata, Torres, Sturridge. How is Gabby more fixture proof?

Do we really need it, when we are trying to sroll down and read multiple pages of comments and the main story ONLY to have it SLOWLY reload the same rotating billboard after every new comment page.

Please consider dropping the banner. It is slowing down the blog at least for me (and maybe thousands of others), not every computer I have is this slow, but I don't like it on my main one. I suppose I need to use adblock. Thanks.

hmmm its a calculated risk but suarez should be fine. the complaint against him is such that the burden of proof will be extremely high. finding him guilty would effectively end his career in england.

I disagree about if being short term. Sturridge is a complete bargain and can be a season's keeper. He is first choice on the right side of chelsea's three and no-one is shifting him for my money.

QPR Blackburn and Wolves in their next five. Not half bad. But as I say, I see it longer term anyway

This proposal would never go through. There's no justification for it other than self interest and it would stop championship and league 1/2 clubs from growing. It's completely against the spirit of football.

It would be going against how other European leagues operate so the FA/UEFA/FIFA would certainly take a strong interest though not sure what jurisdiction they would have. The government would also look to intervene. If it ever got to the stage where 14 clubs were in favour of it I think the outcry from fans would stop it ever happening anyway. Relegation and promotion will not be scrapped.

It's just a snapshot in time, too - what justification would there be to have, say, Norwich and Swansea in ahead of traditionally bigger and better supported clubs like Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday.

UEFA could stop teams from entering the CL, unless other top leagues followed suit and set up a breakaway competition. I agree, though, it'll never happen.

I was thinking the same thing about it being a snapshot in time. Why would teams like Wigan and Swansea deserve to be in the premiership permanently and block other teams from getting back there. At the moment they are there on merit but that can and will change.

Getting rid of relegation in the New Zealand provincial Rugby Union about a decade ago has made the competition boring a few weeks into the season as the teams not in the top 3 or 4 have nothing to play for. They brought relegation back this season and the competition is exciting to the end. In the interests of disclosure Im also a West Ham fan.
