The Digest – Gameweek Eight

A double Dutch weekend, rescued for some by the elegant brilliance of the Arsenal skipper, after Alex Ferguson had conspired to baffle us by attacking Liverpool with a blunt instrument. With such unpredictable madness afoot, even the brawn and bluster on sale in the Potteries is beginning to appeal…

The Player

The build-up to the weekend was dominated by talk of Robin Van Persie and merits of trading from Wayne Rooney to the Arsenal skipper. On Sunday, Van Persie’s performance compounded the misery of those who held firm on Rooney, only to see their man twiddling his medically enhanced fringe on the bench at Anfield.

The Dutchman’s one-man show in Arsenal’s stuttering 2-1 victory over Sunderland underlined his potential to rival Rooney and City’s Sergio Aguero for the Golden Boot, cementing a place in our Fantasy forward lines. The opening goal after less than 30 seconds hinted at an avalanche that never quite arrived; nevertheless Van Persie was unfortunate not to add to his tally with a turn and chip of Bergkamp-like brilliance – the Emirates woodwork denying him a coup de grâce. Van Persie had his match-defining moment, however, his beautifully flighted deadball effort instantly dismissed Seb Larsson’s own quality free-kick as inconsequential – Arsenal had their three points and Van Persie had delivered on his promise.

Having promoted him to the top of Watchlist last week, we were quick to push him above the Manchester duo for the next few gameweeks. Both Rooney and Aguero square up this weekend, whilst Van Persie has another Emirates encounter to size up. Stoke will likely provide a significant obstacle, but, on Sunday’s evidence, those who choose to ignore the Dutchman again will go into gameweek nine feeling ill at ease at the prospect of another rich return for the Arsenal maestro.

The Team

While City powered their way to the pinnacle and Newcastle defended their unbeaten record like their Geordie brethren protecting a pint, our vote goes to a team gradually emerging as a Fantasy force. Stoke’s 2-0 win over Fulham at the Britannia was never in doubt – they simply swamped their opponents with a relentless and powerful showing. Fulham we’re bullied; given no time to settle and produce the kind of cultured flourishes that had Neil Warnock spitting out excuses following his side’s 6-0 slaying at the Cottage.

Stoke were a monster. Tony Pulis’ rigidly regimented unit have now conceded just a single goal in four home matches, emphasising the value of their defensive assets. The flipside of this is that, in attacking terms, they continue to struggle with just 4 goals scored at the Britannia although, with Matt Etherington demonstrating intent with two assists and Jermaine Pennant remaining fit (for now) on the opposite flank, prospects may improve.

A trip to the Emirates next weekend will be a test of Stoke’s progress and Arsenal’s ability to play through the most muscular and stubborn of opponents. Following that however, Stoke have three home matches in four which promise to cement a placing in the top reaches of the table. Newcastle, QPR and Blackburn all visit the Britannia before the end of November and, with a trip to Bolton amongst that group, Pulis will have his sights set on four positive results to take them into December and the Christmas programme. Fantasy managers will surely be taking note and preparing for an acquisition.

The Talking Point

Alex Ferguson appears to be playing some kind of rotation roulette with Roberto Mancini. It’s as if they’re competing to see who can put together the most expensive bench lineup and still fetch the three points. While Sir Alex saw fit to omit Rooney, Nani and Anderson from his teamsheet for the clash with arch-rivals Liverpool, Mancini looked to better him by preserving the talents of David Silva, Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko with Villa in town.

For Fantasy managers, this recent trend creates a nightmarish scenario. Clearly, around Champions League fixtures, we have to ready ourselves for this rest and rotation to continue, for millions of our Fantasy talent to go to waste or be limited to a 20-minute cameo.

Suddenly a decent bench who can actually contribute some points to our gameweek effort might be the way to go. It’s surely foolhardy to risk going into a gameweek without the likes of Silva and Nani and yet, if Ferguson and Mancini persist with their policy around crucial European fixtures, we have to presume that this weekend’s disappointment will kick us in the Balotellis again. We need to be ready for next time; time to shift Shane Ferguson perhaps? I know this bloke down at Wigan who’s good for a couple of points every week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Right....here goes...!
    8 point hit=
    Drogba->Sturridge
    RVP->Suarez
    Brunt->Lampard

    would give me:

    Krul (Vorm)
    Simpson Enrique Bosingwa (Kompany, Briggs)
    Lampard Ramsey Nani Silva
    Adebayor Suarez Sturridge

    Is that madness?....i just really like the look of that team for this Gameweek despite the 8 point hit....?!

      Brunt and RvP hitting form. Don't think that's worth an 8 point hit. The Drogba downgrade to Sturridge should allow you to get another good midfielder in.

      All that said I have a feeling Lampard is going to tear it up vs. QPR this week!

      Not really helped there have I...

            i could just go Drogba->Sturridge
            Nani->Lampard (Silva has risen too much in price to get rid of)
            That would be a 4 point hit and i could keep RVP that way?

          Make other moves possible? You mean Lampard in possible?

          I think you're upsetting a decent team and taking an 8pt hit just so you can get Lamps, and although I do like Frank (had him previously this season) I don't think his form and Chelsea's fixtures warrant the investment.

          Drogba > Sturridge looks a good move though.

            Yes to make Lampard possible and whilst doing so bring in other attractive options for the gameweek, Suarez vs Norwich.
            Considering using Nani->Lampard for funds?
            The RVP bit is the only bit that sucks...
            but Drogba->Sturridge
            Brunt (or i could do Ramsey) -> Lampard
            looks like good trades to me?

              If you're intent on bring in Lamps then Nani > Lamps is best as it means less restructuring elsewhere.

              Can you do:
              Nani > Lamps
              Drogba > Suarez

      I see some people talking about Cleverly as a good option once back, can you explain it? He scored nicely for WIgan, but was playing much more up the field, behind the striker or even next to one. In united he is the deepest sitting mid and playing only 0.7 key passes per match and rarely getting a shot on.

          Still have a gang of Bangonwheelies from like last week infesting your midfield. I would say the priority to get rid would be Murphy just off of price and difficulty of fixtures. The rest (not including Tiote...lost cause) are workwitable, I would save the Dunne move for another week you have Simson, Bos and Enrique you can field.

          Yeh me too. Thought Given would be raking the points in with McLeish in charge but hasn't materialised yet.

          Having 3 big hitters up front is quite risky as they swallow the majority of your funds so if they don't perform/don't play the rest of your squad will struggle to save your gameweek.

          So many good strikers around this season though, I can see the reasoning.

          Your team is good overall..Forwards are excellent, defence is good but I agree with the midfield, Dunne > 4.0 sounds good to me.
          I got Bosingwa and am offloading for ShawX next week, frees up cash and gives me Stoke cover which is always good especially considering fixtures. If you'd consider that, McAuley is a good option at 4.0 and you will have 3 good fixtures for 3 of your defenders for the mid-long term..and the same defence as me ; haha

                Quite right too, beer is pints. Anything else is just wrong. Not those little American pints either, no sneaking those in through the back door of trading standards.

                Pubs, particularly country ones often have large cellars or out buildings.Maybe if you are expanding and need space a deal could be done over rent and beer supply. Two birds with one stone? 🙂

              5,000 pints would barely keep one pub going I'd have thought Captain H, Unless you are putting it in as a guest beer from time to time. I ran a smallish pub would have cleared that in a month.

              I wish you all the best with it, may be worth a mention to Doosra nee MMW, when he's back from Hols. He's more wine, but very similar distribution involved even if he doesn't have shelf life to concern him. 🙂

                Cheers Flynn - the aim is to keep it as a guest in pubs, just to get some public opinion and if it sells then the production will step up, could have access to near 3,000 trees if I want them 🙂

      I'd want Man U coverage for the next few weeks so it really just depends on whether you already have Rooney or Nani...or Adebayor for that matter as Spurs also have a good run coming up.

      Young is due a score so I reckon hang on for the time being. That's what I'm doing.

    Confused.
    I see some people talking about Cleverly as a good option once back, can you explain it? He scored nicely for WIgan, but was playing much more up the field, behind the striker or even next to one. In united he is the deepest sitting mid and playing only 0.7 key passes per match and rarely getting a shot on.

    I love him as a player, but in fantasy??? Anything im missing???

      Yes you can, thats why im putting Ronaldo(C) today and also keeping people on the bench who have a game tomorrow, even dough they have better fixtures. Because the ones with worse fixtures can suprise tonight and if they dont then I can just sub the others in.

    Right lads, not really happy with my squad & having a rubbish season

    Schwarzer (Vorm)
    Bosingwa, Simpson, Warnock, De Laet, Lescott
    Brunt, Silva, Mata, Dyer, Moses
    Suarez, RVP, Adebayor

    £1.9m in the bank

    De Laet and Moses have to go soon so this week i'm thinking either

    1. Lescott & Moses -> Enrique & Ramsey/Petrov (4pt hit)
    2. De Laet -> Enrique

    Leaning towards option 2 but just seeing Moses in my squad annoys me 🙂

      2. Moses was unlucky not to get points at weekend and he'snot a priority.

      Plus i dont see the point of a hit for a defender and Ramsey might not be fit.

      If you are goin to take a hit do it for players that have big scoring potential or captain choice.

      I don't think there's too much wrong with that squad.

      Don't see the point getting rid of Moses now. You've lost 0.2 on him (like me), his upcoming fixtures are decent and I can't see anyone else for £4.5 who would be worth the transfer IMO.

      Enrique in for De Laet is a no brainer but it makes your defence a little expensive. Maybe get Enrique in for Lescott and get rid of De Laet for another £4m def. That should free up good funds to make getting rid of Moses worthwhile.

      I have Suarez and have a horrible feeling he's going to be rested vs Norwich. Looked to be tiring against Man U but I suppose he has a full week to rest up with no Champs League.

      So yeh Dirka could be a good differential for Liverpool coverage. Bit of a punt though to be honest.

          Of Adam, Downing, Kuyt, Bellamy (or anyone else in that price bracket or below) I'd go with Adam probably. Thought he had a good game vs Man U and if Kenny has any sense he'll let him stay on most set pieces over Gerrard.

    a) nani>mata

    b) nani>lampard and bosingwa>warnock, 4 point hit

    c) nani>lampard and silva>adam, 4 point hit

    d) silva>mata

      None of them. Silva and Nani didn't score this week. Hold tight.
      Bale > Walters for free could work though.

    Decided to have a look at my captain picks, bench points & keeper mistakes.

    Figures I got were : Captain 38/99 = shocking, bench points = 74, keepers mistakes = 5 (only pick the wrong keeper once when Vorm saved a penalty)

    No wonder I am so far behind.

    What do you guys get?

        fiso still has him at 6.7, perhaps i should've just not been lazy and checked the actual website.

        Wicked though. Keeping Sturridge, Dzeko out for one of RvP, Adebayor or Suarez.

    Still happy with my gwk 8 low scoring team, but Rooney - to RVP is calling me.

    Only problem is that rooney is capable of a bug haul. At 46 per cent ownership with the bulk of casual players just captaining him each week no matter what, it becomes a massive risk to dump him.

    But, having said that I don't want Rooney for gwk 10 anway. Actually for that week I probably don't want RVP. Ageuro if fit will be the obvious captain that week.

    So in conclusion Rooney - gwk9 RVP - gwk 10 - Ageuro.

    My other strikers are Sturridge and Suarez.

    Sound like a plan?

        cheers. should be ok though...as luckily I decided to take the get 15 players policy rather than the get phantom ferguson in option. Simpson has become a little worrying, but will soon see how that pans out.

      I've got the same front three and have adopted a similar strategy. Regreting swapping out Ade for Suareznow though. Irrespective of Liverpools fixtures that was a mistake (bought Ade at 8.0 too...my bad!).

    Morning all,
    Can I get some help with transfer(s) for this weeks gameweek, current team -

    Given
    Bosingwa Simpson Enrique
    Petrov Silva Ramsey Nani
    Rooney Adebayor Suarez

    A) Rooney>RVP
    B) Rooney>Sturridge and Ramsey>any midfielder?

    Thanks guys.

      see above, I have a similar choice....rooney to RVP is the key decision to make. Think I'll probably do that.

      Keey Ramsey...he had a minor injury. If its confirmed he's fit later in the week it would be madness to ditch him.
