The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – It’s About Time

With just five games played out, Saturday satisfaction always looked unlikely. It’s fitting however, that with the big guns yet to be primed, we saw a handful of mid-price players come to the fore and deliver long overdue returns. Fitting and just little bit painful.

Jamie O’Hara started proceedings, blasting a dramatic equaliser to earn Wolves an unlikely point. Full of industry, creativity and threat, O’Hara has been an influential figure, without delivering returns for those brave enough to take a punt. Subject of our recent Members’ Monitor article and, just a couple of gameweek’s later, O’Hara has at last broke his duck. It was coming.

The start of something special? With City up next and three away games in four, it seems unlikely. Even so, O’Hara could yet figure on our radars should McCarthy get Wolves earning victories again.

A few hours later, Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon – another mid-price midfielder who has failed to live up to his pre-season billing, earned Steve Bruce three points with a victory at the Reebok.

Ironically, Sessegnon’s first goal of the season coincided with his shift back to the flank, as Bruce paired Connor Wickham and Nicklas Bendtner in his forward line. The Dane later converted a second for the Black Cats; Sessegnon providing the assist and fetching a belated 10-point return for the few thousand Fantasy managers who had kept the faith. Expect bonus points to follow on Monday morning and, with three home games in four to come, suddenly “Sess” is back in the game and blinking bright.

While Sunderland prevailed at Bolton, Yohan Cabaye also fired his first goal of the season to hand North East rivals Newcastle the points. The Frenchman is another Fantasy prospect that’s been touted as overdue returns. Having delivered just a couple of assists thus far, Cabaye gleefully converted to keep the Magpies buoyant and Wigan resigned to the relegation spots.

Unlike Sessegnon, Cabaye’s stock seems unlikely to rise from today’s success. Alan Pardew is now set to steer his happy ship through choppy waters, three away trips in four with Stoke, City and United presenting three of the toughest destinations around. Cabaye’s next significant return could be a good few weeks away.

Is anyone out there feeling smug? Is there really any Fantasy manager with O’Hara, Sessegnon and Cababye tucked away in their lineup? There can’t be many and yet, there will be plenty who have owned at least one of them previously, now pondering what might have been.

Having been threatening to return all season, the trio chose today to get off the mark – a day which seems set to see such modest scoring for many. That only fuels the frustration and makes their late delivery all the more difficult to accept.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

None of those options appeal. I'm sticking by Moses for now, surely he will score something eventually. You only lose money by selling him at a loss, the inevitable gain will occur as he starts to find his stride

    Enrique Kompany Bosingwa Simpson Ward
    Nani Mata Silva Sinclair Dyer
    Adabayor Aglonlahor Suarez
0.5m in bank. 2 free transfers.

    Might do the GW11 WC.

Suarez seems to be so frustrating - could blow games apart, but just misses out.
Shouldn't really have Sinclair and Dyer in my team, so am possible thinking of Sinclair to Walters at some stage and unsure whether to keep sticking with Suarez.

    Any thoughts appreciated?

I guess I'm in the minority then, in that I'd recommend keeping Sinclair - seems to be finding a bit of form lately.

Get rid of Dyer, maybe for Pilkington or Bannan?

Sinclair has been excellent lately, and in my opinion is the best for his price-range along with Walters.
Pilkington and Bannan are both good picks for Dyer..Id go Bannan

I just dont get having kuyt and suarez. kuyt may not start every week and there are too many strikers that are better to have than suarez. Today typified Suarez: a thousand moves, and not enough finishing. Even when he scores, its never more than one per game.

Granted, I, too, am looking at bosingwa to shawX this week, but I think one or both pool guys need to go.

p.s I know having Kuyt isn't ideal, but he was dangerous yesterday and is a huge differential if he can grab something against WBA and/or Swansea.
I dont see him getting dropped as he has been better than Adam, Carroll Henderson and Downing.
It was my first 'risk' of the season, but no matter what he becomes Nani GW12

See, here is where I disagree with most on here. I think differentials are idiotic. I think its hard enough to get points at all, let alone getting points n one else is getting. I always think its better to build the team that will get the most points, regardless of ownership. No matter what, there are people ahead who wont have the same team as you, so youll make up points there.

Undifferentials make sense. Everyone has Suarez, I dont think hes a good striker to have...so I dont have him,. I honestly think I have three strikers who will consistently outscore him and make better captain choices, mostly because suarez will rarely score more than one goal a game, if that.

I don't think differentials are idiotic, but having differentials just for the sake of it is.

If you've got two players to choose from, both equal in all regards, and everyone in your leagues has one but not the other, well it makes sense to go the differential.

Alright, for an example... Bannan vs Pilkington as 4th or 5th midfielder (not big guns I know but the first that came to mind).

Both have strong fixtures coming up, both have good form in the past few matches, Bannan is probably more prone to rotation but Pilks plays for a weaker team.

But if people in your league already jumped aboard the Bannanwagon when he was scoring freely, Pilks would make a good differential.

I have captained him twice, on both occassions he got 18 points for me which on that week, was better than the other highly chosen forwards like Aguero/Rooney etc.
He is also, dont forget, 3 or so cheaper.
My decision to get Kuyt for 3 weeks was based on the fact that he has scored well in previous years and is playing as a second striker, this was before I even realised he was owned by 1.6%.
The differential factor doesn't come into the equation overall wise, but of the few above me none have Kuyt.

How could he get you 18 points twice....he has only scored 9 points one this year. He only outscored rooney once this year, so I dont know where that is from, either.

yeah, I know hes 3 mil cheaper. And sturridge, who is scoring nearly as well, is 3 less than him. whats your Adebayor, with less minutes and 1 mil cheaper has outscored suarez, too. And Ade fixtures are way better.

The thing with kuyt is at any moment he could be benched for Carrol, and if you already have suarez, liverpool arent scoring enoug hto justify double coverage, espeically double coverage that costs neary a fifth of your budget.

Shit thats right haha, thought he got the 3 BP's against Everton 😐
All I need from Kuyt is the next 2 games and I will ship him out, Carrol hasnt been playing nearly as well as him so i dont see him getting dropped.
I know doubling up on Liverpool isnt great, but there is no point getting rid of either before their next two games.
I see your point about Suarez, but I have both Sturridge and Adebayor, and I dont see anybody worth upgrading him too (at the expense of a mid) for a 4 point hit.

rooney, in all honesty. Everyone acts like away to everton next week is this horrible fixture, but hes going to score there. Evertons defense is awful.

I hate point hits though, so I see your point there. In general though , downgrading kuyt in order to ship suarez for rooney makes a lot of sense to me.

My big problem is having RVP, Rooney, and Sturridge........and wanting Adebayor so damn bad.

I'd have to get rid of Kuyt to someone less than 7.1 in order to get in Rooney for Suarez for a 4 point hit..
I didnt think it would be worth it as the both of them have good fixtures as well as the fact it would stop me from getting Nani in later on.

I could alternatively get in Rooney/Pilkington/Bannan and Baines for Bosingwa Suarez Kuyt and Dyer over the next few weeks.

Depends on who you'd be able to swap him for - if you have the funds to upgrade significantly and don't have to take a hit, go for IMO.

I can see a few with that idea, J-dubs, myself included. There's a couple of things that put me off the idea:

          1. City rotation - gawd knows who shows up. At least with RVP and Roonpig they start each game.

          2. Can still see RVP scoring at CHS. Plus the dilemna (and trauma) of getting him back if the price rises.

I've upgraded - like you as it happens - to the Supa-Dupa I6. The Super Six and the Supa-Dupa Six still needed tweaking here and there.

The "I" stands for interactive. It means I can transfer in and out with like for like. So Nani for VDV; RVP for Aguero, etc, etc.

      Brilliant, ay! 🙂

Me too newman. I'm committed to always having 2 of Aguero/Rooney/RVP to captain as my tactic for at least the short/medium term. Sold Suarez for Ade a couple weeks ago then his injury coincided with the realisation that Sturridge is unbelievable value. So I'm sticking with sturridge alongside my captains but it feels wrong not fitting Ade back in 🙁

VDV about to go up in price again...should i get him if i don't have Adebayor?
    My team atm:
    Begovic Given
    Bosingwa Kompany Enrique Rangel Simpson
    Nani Silva Bannan Ramsey Petrov
    RVP Sturridge Di Santo

    Considering two moves:
    1) Petrov->VDV, Di Santo->Graham
    OR
    2)Petrov->Allen, Di Santo->Rooney, Bosingwa->Barnett for a 4pt hit

Okay, Newmans got me second-guessing haha.
    Team is
    Vorm (Given)
Bosingwa* Enrique Kompany (Simpson De Laet)
    Kuyt* VdV Silva Mata (Dyer)
    Suarez* Adebayor Sturridge
1 FT, WC still intact, 0.4 in the bank
    Which is the best option
    A) Save the transfer - boring
    B) Bosingwa > Shawcross - Leaves my with both Kuyt and Suarez (silly move I know, but it could have been glorious)
    C) Bosingwa and Kuyt > Shawcross and Nani (-4) - kinda want to do this one
    D) Kuyt and Suarez > 7.1 mid and Rooney - meaning I have to keep Bosingwa, and have no Pool attack for wba and mainly Swansea at home
    E) WC - just an option

Just taking a step back, here, Jack.

We are in week 9 and you are planning for the next gwk. In another 10 or so weeks, we'll all get another wildcard. If I was in your position, I would play my first w/c sooner rather than later. I feel that there are 6 players that need to be removed and it would be better to do it now before the prices get too high.

So, imho, option E for me.

        Who are the 6?
I know Kuyt is one...but no real others are major concerns
Given/De Laet will be changed later on when I have a transfer to spare, Bosingwa is going > Shawcross.
Kompany/Enrique/Simpson are fine, as is the midfield (barring Kuyt) and Suarez is the only very slight concern out of the front three.
You can say there is 10 weeks (in which time anything could happen) until next WC, but there is also almost 30 weeks until seasons end, I dont need to WC before the next one is available..seems a waste

Given has not provided us with the cs we thought he would.
Kuyt is just under too much threat of starts. De Lite isn't playing. Bos has only kept one cs all year.

Now it gets contentious so bear with me. I strongly feel that you need Rooney and/or RVP right now. Both have a strong run of fix and are consistent scorers. For that reason, Bad K will have to be jettisoned and one of the forwards, probably Suarez, who only averages 4 ppg.

Your rank is similar to mine and the reason I'm suggesting play your w/c now, is to prevent yourself from getting too far behind. Yes, anything might happen, but I feel it is better to be proactive rather than wait for something untoward which may/may not happen. 😕

This is true, but I can get rid of Bosingwa and Kuyt this week.
Which would leave Given/De Laet/Suarez and Kompany as the 'major' problems.
Given is a goalie, and as we know goalies score the least points.
De Laet is 3 deep on my bench and only 4.0, although he isnt playing he isnt an urgent transfer
Suarez has wba and Swansea coming up, with a bit more luck he could get a couple for the next two then I could sell him off later.
Kompany is one of the top scoring defenders and is up against WOL, qpr and NEW in his next 3, which he would be expected to keep at least 2 out of 3 clean sheets..
Im not exactly waiting for a disaster to force my hand, im just waiting for a better opportunity to use my WC.
Getting Rooney/RVP in will be relatively easy as I can just downgrade a mid and upgrade Suarez or Adebayor.
I just dont think it justifies a WC yet.
But, i do, as always, appreciate your input!

That's okay. Clearly, you are not ready in your own mind to play your w/c and that's the correct call.

Yes, ppl go on about Suarez but he did have 11 opportunities to score v NOR and it's highly likely he will score big very soon.

              Best of luck 😉

I could finally keep calm from kicking Suarez out of my team, keep 1 FT, and have my team for wk 10.

    Vorm
    Bosingwa - Kompany - N.Taylor
    Siva - Nani - Mata - N.Dyer
    Adebayor - RVP - Suarez

Sub: Krul, M.Petrov, Simpson, De Laet

    Here my thoughts....

1: I don't like the fact that I will play 3 Swansea next week. Probably look at De Laet > Wilkinson to have Stoke DF. Is he their first-choice RB?

2: Is VDV a must if I already have Ade? I think Spurs will tell me tonight if I should double them.

3: How to get VDV? I will have to lose one of Mata or Nani... 🙁

While I have so many people I respect here online at the same time:

VDV: thoughts? I can't get Ade, I like my strikers too much, so maybe VDV?

For Mata? Need to make change if so.

    For Nani? Surely not

For Silva..........then maybe get Nasri instead the week after?

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeh, not liking any of these for someone who may end up wide right instead of center.

Spurs will meet QPR next week. You should have Ade or VDV in your team. I'm considering even if I should double them after tonight. As you have double Chelsea and Man Utd in your attacking line-up, they are candidates to move. Mata seems to be the most possible candidate to go compared to Rooney/Nani/Sturridge.

Is the fund allow if you downgrade Bosingwa and upgrade Sturridge to Ade? That's a choice too.

You want to keep Nani with Utd's improving fixtures. I'd monitor the form of Mata from a ff point of view and also Silva, to see if he continues to start in the PL with the CL fixtures becoming a priority.

Best play a waiting game for now, imo. 😕

You have a very strong gut instinct for TOT so I'd always recommend you trust that thought. See how they go this week at BLB and make a decision in the week. VDV and Ade were both hamstring doubts last week so I'd keep a close eye on their fitness.

Pilkington and Kun in for Mata/nani & Gabby. Yay or Nay? Thanks

    Bos Enrique Simpson Woodie Evans
    Mata Nani Silva Moses Reo-Coker
    RVP Adebayor Gabby

Bit of a shocker yesterday, though: Boyata injured 7 minutes short of a clean sheet, Vorm fumbled 10 minutes short of one and Jose Enrique lost his to an enormous yellow donkey. Still, onward and upward!

Nah, they don't do clean sheets but Boyata is a decent player and a real threat at set pieces. They have some reasonable fixtures coming up which is all you can hope for at the price, I suppose. He seems to be a guaranteed starter as well.

Sunderland are such an upredictable team. Played well in the second half and deserved to win but have been mostly abject when I've seen them this year. They'll probably lose to Villa next week, now though.

very good. had i known that two of my players would drop, and two of my transfer targets would rise, it might have been a different story though. 3 more points for Ignorance Is Bliss

Lads, been reading great stuff on the comments section...

    Crucial transfers this gameweek:

    Mata out for VDV

    or

    Sturridge out for Adebayor?

    Which one would fit best?

Both seem tough, but both seem good.
See how they all play today!

Cheers jack, good call...won't transfer until I watch the matches! Another quick question...Aguero vs RVP? I know there is talk of rotation risk with Aguero, but Wenger also commented that he will have to rest RVP as well...which bodes better, in your opinion?

That one really seems a coin toss.
RVP is arguably more nailed on, but Aguero plays for a better team, both have good fixtures and form
If I had to choose, Id go Aguero as he is cheaper and plays for the better team..as I said 😉

I reckon RVP will be rested midweek.
I would go with RVP ahead of Aguero.
