Watchlist

The Watchlist – Royston Drenthe

With a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon, Everton should see an upturn in the form that has brought them just three points from their last six games. The last few gameweeks has brought one Toffees player in particular into our Fantasy thoughts – Royston Drenthe.

There’s no denying that David Moyes has a real talent on his hands in the shape of the on-loan Dutchman, though it’s mainly been Drenthe’s questionable temperament that has attracted attention in the past. A Carling Cup dismissal aside, Drenthe has so far let his ability do the talking in his short spell at Goodison.

Due to concerns over his initial fitness, Drenthe had been used sparingly by the Everton boss but, after a couple of months of Moyes’ punishing fitness regime, the Dutchman clearly feels that he’s now in good shape:

“Before I started to play, the manager killed me in training. He made me run a lot and now I feel really fit and great. That’s what I wanted, to be sharp. I don’t want not to be fit and then come into a game and not be able to handle the pressure. I feel good now.”

It’s shown in his recent performances, too. Drenthe has played ninety minutes just twice for the Toffees, away at Fulham and Newcastle, but has returned Fantasy points both times- a goal, 2 assists and 3 bonus points at Craven Cottage was followed by an assist last weekend in the 2-1 defeat at Newcastle.

While an enticing run of fixtures (WOL, bol, STO, ars, NOR, SWA) would typically have Fantasy managers eyeing up a move for Leighton Baines, a look at each player’s stats suggest the Dutchman could be the better option. Baines has played 900 minutes and returned 27 points, with just a single goal and no assists, while, despite playing almost a third of Baines’ game time (312 minutes), Drenthe has already scored twice and produced 4 assists for a total of 33 points.

Given that Baines comes in at 7.8 for a defender, while Drenthe is a 6.0 midfielder, the appeal is obvious. Recent games have also seen the pair share free-kick duties, adding another facet to the latter’s Fantasy potential. With Everton sitting in fourth-bottom of the division and the likes of Phil Jagielka recently admitting morale is low at the club, Drenthe could prove the catalyst to spark the Toffees season back into life.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

yep groin injury (sustained from bburn game a few weeks ago). It means he'll be out for internationals, could be back in time for NEW, but good news for me (since i don't have him) it will mean loads of Transfers out and price drops for arguably one of the best strikers in the fpl

Looks like he'll be back for man City next game, though - the injury is definitely keeping him out of Argentina's first match during the break, but they're hopeful he'll make the second one. Wouldn't be drafting in Balotelli just yet.

Christ, I'd love to have Drenthe in my team but then all my midfielders would be at home this week and none next week. Thus I think I'll be plumping for Ramsey instead.

Shame Moyes hasn't given his other recent signing Stracqualursi as much of a chance to show what he can do too. Obsessed with just one up front and wonders why he doesn't score many goals.

Is Helguson a good shout for QPR? Will he fade in to the background if they sign Defoe or another striker in the January window?

By the time the DGW come around, his price will have skyrocketed to 12 million, and anyone that didnt jump on board now will be crying into their coco pops.

He looks very good, strong, good dribbler and has a powerful shot and a nice passing range, has taken some set pieces away from Baines already. In my opinion better player than the ones you named, just in a team not doing so well. Negatives are that he likes to make stupid tackles.

He's been a tough nut to get rid of for me too. Every week I've had something else to do, or City have had a nice fixture, and I didnt want to get rid in case he had his "big" week. Finally did it at the start of this week though. And it feels like such a relief.

Very off topic but in these boring days of the int break I've compiled a list of 11 songs about the number 11 to mark 11.11.11

    http://www.neonfiller.com/wordpress/?p=4368

Tried to construct a team entirely of number 11s as well but was far too tricky.

no . not for an 8 point
but it depends on who ur transferring out. obviously , it will be worth it if u have wilshere, cleverly etc. but im sure ur not in such a desperate condition so NO for me
8 point hits tend to have very bad consequences.

So, I have 5mil burning a hole in my bank. Do I?

    1) Change Ramsey to Lampard?

    2) Walters to Nani?

    3) Sturridge for Roonpig.

I'm happy enough with the team so far and tempted to hold fire until I know that a transfer will improve the team.

But leaving that £££ in the bank - it's heresy!

Ramsey to Lamps is probably your best bet - but as you say, it's not really necessary. You're gaining someone on pens of course, but at the same time, Ramsey has good fixtures.
I'm in a similar situation as you, money to burn but nothing urgent ( apart from that splinterbut De Laet)

Mornin' everyone, think I got it (WC).

    Vorm - Ruddy
    Kompany - Enrique - Wilkinson - Gabbidon - McAuley
    Sessegnon - Silva - VDV - Allen - Drenthe
    VP - Adebayor - Rooney

Play Vorm, Kompany, Enrique every week
Rotate Wilkinson / Gabbidon / McAuley and Allen / Drenthe / Sessegnon

900.000 in the bank so maybe Shawcross instead of Wilkinson will be possible next week. Probably getting some NEW in GW16 but anything could happen by then.First I wanted to squeeze Lampard in but his 4 yellows conviced me to invest the money in defence.

    Thoughts on improvements / suggestions?

Royston Rickie Drenthe (born 8 April 1987) is a Dutch footballer who plays for Everton on loan from Real Madrid.

Mainly a midfielder, and regarded as one of football's fastest players, he can also operate as a defender or forward, but always on the left side of the pitch.

I never noticed how fast he was...

Unconvinced by this article, some individual posted a much better one on why Drenthe was a good prospect (still was unconvinced by that as well!). Walters has done me proud, but am tempted to switch to Drenthe (after Walts plays home to QPR and Blackburn as a striker!). Drenthe is good prospect, massively overhyped in FP:Lterms for an Everton team that has, to be fair, not set the FPL world on fire. Sunderland present cheaper options with similiar run of good fixtures and a bit better form= better investment. Drenthe one of several interesting fourth midfield picks, but front runner he is not, certainly not until Everton get some Ws.

Just one more reason in million others why everyone needs to pick Royston Drenthe.

Arrggghhh!! I was hoping an article like this wouldn't come out until after the next game week. Now all the casual players who hadn't looked at Drenthe before will be jumping on the band wagon before the internationals finish making is price rise >:[
