Scout Scribbles- Henry a Doubt for Gunners

Newcastle splash the cash to snap up Papiss Demba Cisse. Thierry Henry is an early doubt for Arsenal with a calf problem. Jonas Olsson could return for West Brom this weekend, while Mick McCarthy has a few injury worries ahead of tonight’s FA Cup replay with rivals Birmingham.

Newcastle have made the first significant move in the winter transfer window with the capture of Papiss Demba Cisse from SC Freiburg on a five and a half year deal. The Senegal international, currently unavailable due to African Cup of Nations commitments, has been handed the number nine shirt and is set to link up with compatriot Demba Ba, in what looks like a lethal front pairing for Alan Pardew’s side. Cisse has an outstanding scoring record in the Bundesliga, netting 31 goals in 49 appearances in the last two seasons, and Pardew explained the reasoning behind the move:

Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice in the specific role he has had at the end of the play. He’s a player who plays off the shoulder and wants to go in behind, but he’s got a little bit more to his game than that.

Thierry Henry may miss out on the chance to feature against Man United this weekend after reports suggest he has picked up a calf problem in training. The Frenchman has since undergone scans, with Arsene Wenger anxiously awaiting the results.

Norwich have announced they have agreed a deal with Leeds for the transfer of Jonathan Howson. The Leeds skipper has six months left on his existing contract and the move will go ahead subject to a medical and agreement of personal terms. It would bring yet another midfielder to the Canaries ranks, further swelling the options available to Fantasy managers- Paul Lambert has already used eight players in the middle this season and with little sign of consistency of selection, Howson’s appeal, in spite of his undoubted talents, may be resultantly lessened.

The Canaries have also revealed Ritchie De Laet’s loan deal has been cancelled. The Belgian has struggled with a back problem all season and has appeared just twice since the end of gameweek 4; he returns to parent club Man United with immediate effect.

Sunderland’s highly-rated forward Ryan Noble has joined up at Derby on a one-month loan deal. Noble has been banging in the goal for the Black Cats reserves but has struggled to make the step up to the first-team, with just a couple of sub appearance all season. Noble is the third Sunderland player to leave on loan this week; Jordan Cook and Louis Laing joined Carlisle United and Wycombe Wanderers respectively.

Chris Herd looks likely to remain on the sidelines for another month for Aston Villa. The Australian has failed to feature since gameweek 15 after picking up an ankle injury and was initially expected to return this month but Alex McLeish admitted yesterday that the player needs further recovery time. McLeish also revealed the club will be cautious with Emile Heskey’s Achilles problem, while Eric Lichaj managed forty-five minutes for the reserves yesterday, having been out since August with a hip problem.

West Brom injury woes appear to be lessening ahead of their weekend trip to Stoke. Speaking yesterday, Roy Hodgson admitted he is hopeful of a first-team for both Jonas Olsson and Shane Long, while Nicky Shorey and Gareth McAuley are making good progress from “slight strains”. On the downside, the Baggies boss revealed that Paul Scharner is a doubt with an Achilles injury and Billy Jones is struggling to overcome a hamstring problem.

Mick McCarthy revealed he has a few injury concerns ahead of this evening’s FA Cup replay with Birmingham. Roger Johnson, Matt Jarvis and Kevin Foley are all likely to be sidelined, with the Wolves boss hopeful the trio will be ready for the weekend home clash against Aston Villa. McCarthy also admitted Dave Edwards was subbed off at Spurs due to a lack of match fitness, while in-form Steven Fletcher will be rested this evening to ensure his availability for the Villa showdown.

Ryan Shotton has today revealed he is on course for a comeback this weekend against West Brom. Shotton missed out last time round at Anfield after failing a fitness test on his ankle but is making steady progress and expects to be available to face Roy Hodgson’s men at the Britannia.

I'm not so sure abt VDV .. City's defence looks mediocre without Kompany .. Spurs will definitely score a few and with Adebayor not playing ,VDV can do well

He did okay, scored something like 3, 5, 10 in the three weeks I had him, and outscored Nasri - who everyone had at the time.

The best thing was I managed to persuade AP - and Gargamel - to jump on too, but AP got rid before the game where he scored. Absolutely glorious.

FPL wise maybe, i havent been impressed with him for a long while. I think it said a lot when he had a decent Euro Championships (expect he was rubbish in the final) then he was linked with all the big boys in Europe but no one actually wanted him so Arsenal took him, looked a great buy intitally.

I'd go have a long look at Wikipedia now and come back with something really good about him if it wasn't the blackout day today Goose, so count yourself lucky.

He's been great for his national team tbh except lately, and was the best player when Zenit won the UEFA cup too, from memory. Think he might come good again if he gets a move. He's certainly done at Arsenal

Thanks Rudy. My Swans double-up tactic is based on their brand of keep-ball, which they do remarkably well, as their home form to date shows. Zamora is a 2 or 4-game punt. Now he's playing again, he's usually Fulham's best bet for FOR goals/assists, with next 2 games at home (NEW, WBROM) away to Citch, then back at the Cottage for STO.

3 of next 4 at home is worthy of attention in my book for a decent mid-range FOR.

I would simply not bench Bale. I see perfectly why you might, but for me, Spurs likely to try to hit MC on the break, and Bale plays to that strength brilliantly. Dzeko's big problem is will he start at all, Mancini could go with Balo, if fit.

Either way, I have a feeling it'll be quite a tight affair, perhaps 1-0 either way, or 1-1.

    Valencia Sess Mclean Silva Bale

Not with a front 8 like this :
          Silva Bale Valencia Sess Demps
          RVP Aguero Sturridge

Sturridge looks the bench candidate. Not played for a while, team not playing amazingly and tough away fixture (yes I think Nor is quite a tricky place to go)

That's why it's probably a waste, when the extra can be used to upgrade a defender or even the starting 11 (ie Dempsey > Nani etc)
Don't see the point in a front 8 like that when nobody really rotates, and benching Sturridge against Norwich is madness btw.
But each to their own, can't argue with the ranking.

this is true, but that's going too far. You want someone who at least plays - like Dyer - so that when he's called upon, like last week for many, he gives you 14 points

Ha, well put. I just think McLean's going to rip Swansea up at his home. In the two matches before chelsea he picked up all 6 bonus points plus a goal. If I didn't know that, I'd have no problem benching him. But I can't un-know it now.

Not great Garg, but it wasn't not having RVP that's done that. It was Rooney getting mysteriously dropped/injured for two lovely home fixtures, Nani not performing lately, Sturridge missing a few games, etc. etc.

I don't think he's essential, but then I don't think anyone is essential this season (only Ronaldo and Henry have ever been since I've started playing, imo, but others will disagree). Don't get me wrong, I think he'll score well, very well most likely, but for me, I think I'd rather not have him and have Aguero with £2M to upgrade elsewhere.

Don't consider it, it'll be Silva all over again.

There were a number of smarties on here taking out Silva for Gerrard/Dempsey etc and its backfiring already I.E his assist against Wigan etc.

RVP won't stop scoring unless he gets injured end off.

ok folks help me out for this week

    Vorm

    Jones, Raylor, Brown

    Silva, Nani, Bale, Donovan

    RvP, Sturridge, Odem

    Friedel,McAuley, BAE, Tiote

    1) Should I play Fridel
    2) Who to captain

    3) should I make any changes, was tempted by Nani - Gerrard but I want Nani for GW23, Donovan could hurt Rovers, just leaves Thingy. Or I could do nothing and have 2 frees next week for 2 1 week punts before wc.

      1) No don't play Friedel.
      2) Captain RVP, as at home he a constant threat.
      3) Nani to Valencia then Vorm to Krul.

Which should I choose between these two options (for next 2 gameweeks only)

    A - Sess & Sturridge
    B - McClean & Torres

Normally I'd say A but not convinced Sturridge will start; AVB said he was fit but didn't even bring him on v Sunderland, and not sure he'll want to drop a midfielder v Swansea. Having said that, I really want to bring Sess in. Any opinions or other bright ideas for a striker with a budget of 8.6?

Is Huth worth the 0.5 more than Shawcross? Both have scored a goal, both nailed on!

Shawcross is captain but both are nailed on so for the 0.5 stick with Shawcross.

Good point but if you can name a defend that frequently scores then it would be a wise choice. But since defenders rarely score in the Premier League, that 0.5 could be used to improve other areas. Also take note that Stoke's main source of goals this season have been Crouch and Walters.

I would'nt say "defenders rarely score in the Premiere League"... but i feel huth has a better scoring potential with his free kicks and headers... i remember scoring a brace at the Brittania

He's not been this far obviously, but I think he might be. Does get more attempts on goal than Shawcross.

But has also been subject to greater rotation than ShawX. It's a judgement call, neither is wrong, so go with what makes your team/gut feels better.

I think he will be, because of the extra goal threat.

    Lost on last post

    RMWCT

    Sorensen/Schwarzer
    Santon/Shotton/Kelly/Evans J/Richards
    Silva/Mata/Valencia/Murphy/Walters
    Rooney/Torres/Dzeko

    method in my madness
    Play ManU/Chelsea/Man C every week,
Play what every Fulham/Stoke plays have better fixtures
Could change Torres & Dzeko to Sturridge & Aguero

    what say you?

      1) Almost the same defence as me will do the job if rotated properly.
      2) Murphy will get you no points replace with McClean.
      3) Dzeko, not entirely sure about him. Balotelli is more favoured and once Yaya Toure returns the formations changes and Dzeko goes back the bench. For now I'd go Dzeko to Sturridge or take a punt on Fletcher, Crouch or Morisson.

Anyone think its NOT essential to have Vorm/Swansea defender from now until rest of the season? Theyre home fixtures arent the best anymore and I think there is a combo of other defenders that can cover.

I plan on playing 3 at the back mostly and am considering something like this:

    Krul/Mignolet
    Richards/Enrique/RTaylor/Shotton/Kelly

Possibly upgrade Richards to Kompany when he is back + Enrique to Skrtel as he is a bigger goal threat. Should I leave Shotton and Kelly or boost them to Shawcross and Senderos? I have spare cash in the bank.

      Of course it isn't essential.
Although I'd back Swansea to get more clean sheets than Stoke and Sunderland and probably Fulham between now and GW38 regardless of fixtures.

        Richards, Savic, Lescott, Clichy.

Full backs for their pace against Bale/Lennon, Lescott will probably match-up with Ade, Savic is where Spurs tear MC up. 🙂
