Scout Scribbles- Arteta Out for Gunners

Mikel Arteta is ruled out for Arsenal’s showdown with Man United. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are fit for the champions, Roger Johnson looks set to return for Wolves, while Martin O’Neill is in line for a defensive boost ahead of the visit of Swansea:

Arsene Wenger gave a substantial injury update this morning ahead of Arsenal’s match with Man United. The Gunners boss revealed Mikel Arteta is definitely out of Sunday’s showdown and conceded he is far from optimistic on the availability of Thomas Vermaelen, with the Belgian a major doubt. Thierry Henry is due to have a test on a calf problem on Saturday, while Wenger also admitted full-backs Kieren Gibbs and Bacary Sagna are two to three weeks away from a return.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones will both be available for Man United for the Emirates clash. The defensive duo missed out in last week’s home win over Bolton but Sir Alex Ferguson revealed this morning they are both fully recovered. Anderson suffered a setback in training and is unavailable.

Harry Redknapp is confident that Jermain Defoe can come into the Spurs side against City on Sunday and have a big say in the title race. Defoe is of course more-or-less guaranteed a place in Spurs’ starting XI with loan star Emmanuel Adebayor unable to play against his parent club. However, it seems that owners of Adebayor do not need to worry about the Togolese striker regaining his place in the side against Wigan the following week, Redknapp said:

With Emmanuel Adebayor here, it’s been a case of Manu and who else up front?

West Brom manager Roy Hodgson is confident that midfielder Graham Dorrans can fill the hole left by Paul Scharner’s likely absence against Stoke tomorrow. Scharner is struggling to recover from an Achilles injury and Dorrans, who has only played a bit part role for the Baggies this season, is looking good to replace the Austrian. Hodgson said:

It’s a chance for Graham Dorrans, who has done well in recent games when he has come on. He is also getting better and better with every training session. He is a quality player. You don’t lose that quality but sometimes you get rusty if you are not playing or have had injuries like he has.

Wigan face a midfield headache with Mohamed Diame on international duty and David Jones doubtful with a calf injury. However manager Roberto Martinez has no other fitness worries with Albert Crusat returning successfully from his back injury against Manchester City on Monday.

Wolves are set to welcome back captain Roger Johnson for their vital midlands derby against Aston Villa on Saturday. Johnson, who was a vital part of the Wolves defence that kept Spurs at bay last weekend, has been feeling the effects of the ankle injury he picked up against Birmingham two weeks ago. Wolves are without a clean-sheet since their stalemate against Aston Villa back in August but could break that run in the reverse fixture this weekend.

Everton gaffer David Moyes will once again have to put a together a makeshift defence for the visit of Blackburn with Tony Hibbert and Phil Jagielka still someway off a return. However, Sylvain Distin is making a good recovery from the injury that he sustained against Spurs and will be given every chance to prove his fitness prior to the Rovers game.

Fabian Delph has returned to old club Leeds from Aston Villa. The midfielder joins up at Elland Road on a twenty-eight day emergency loan deal and pre-empts the deal that will see Johnny Howson join up at Norwich. Paul Lambert confirmed this morning he expect the Leeds skipper to have completed his move to Carrow Road by the weekend.

Reports suggest Ryan Shotton and Rory Delap may be sidelined for Stoke’s game with West Brom tomorrow. With Jermaine Pennant currently out of favour, the Potters could be set to turn to Ben Marshall to solve the right wing berth.

Martin O’Neill received some positive injury news ahead of Sunderland’s home game with Swansea. Wes Brown and Titus Bramble are making strong progress from groin and Achilles injuries respectively and may be set to feature, with O’Neill admitting:

Wes is improving and so is Titus. The news on Wes has been good this week and we’ll see how he is today, as we will with Titus. But Wes, perhaps more than Titus, might have a chance for this weekend. They’re certainly looking better than they were at this time last week.

Right, decided on my team for this week, but a little indecisive on whether to play Bale or Best?

    Mignolet
    Bosingwa | Brown | Gabbidon
    Mata | Sess | Gerrard | Dempsey | Bale*
    Bent | Rooney (c)

Subs: Vorm | Dawson | Santon | Best*

Team is lining up nicely, should bring enough cover for the next few GW's and will bring Silva/Nasri in for Gerrard/Dempsey next week depending on performances!

McClean's form has been amazing, he got very close to score against Chelsea.. and they are playing Swans at HOME..
but I agree with you, it feels wrong to bench Bale.. he is fixture proof in a way.

Gerrard (VC) - Dempsey - Walters - Sessegnon
    RVP - Aguero - Fletcher (C)

    [Krul, Bale, BAE, Evans]

Bit nervous about the possibility of a high scoring bench, then only forward I'd change is Sess out for Bale but Sess home to Swansea and Bale away to Man C.

I don't get the love for Adebayor. In 9 games from 3 Dec he has averaged 3.67 pts per game. Is that what you want from £9.4m?

That's hugely unfair, subjectively picking his worst period and ignoring the rest of the data that makes him the fifth highest scoring striker in FPL, the 8th highest in the game.

10 games previous Dec 3 he averages 7.5 pts per game, for a season ave of close to 5.6.

Strikers always have hot and cold spells, and he'll warm up again, sooner or later.

I'm not picking his worst period - I'm picking his most recent period.

If you consider an acceptable cold spell to be 25% of the season then good luck to you with your team selection.

It's concerning for a guy who gets quite a few clear cut chances and doesn't put them away

            What?

Members stats page; Strikers goal threat; last 6 games accuracy:

            Aguero 68.75% (11 on target from 16)
            Graham 63.64% (7 from 11)
            Welbeck 60.00% (6 from 10)
            Berbatov 60.00% (6 from 10)
            RVP 57.14 % (12 from 21)
            Ba 56.25% (9 from 16)
then N'Gog, Yak, Rooney, Sturridge, Drogba, before
            Adebayor 40.00% (6 from 15)

I'd rather have Ba than Graham even if the accuracy is worse but there's no way you can defend Ade's RECENT shot accuracy.

Everyones saying play Bale over Drenthe.

Just looking the only games where Bale has scored over 4 is

wig, QPR, fulham, VILLA, wba, BOL, nor, WBA, WOL.

So away to City shouldn't expect much I'm thinking.

If ever going to have Drenthe this is the ideal kind of game for him. If he starts could quite easily get a good score. Bale is probable to get a 2/3 may some bonus.

Don't think the gamble is that massive for potential points lost, compared to potential points gained.

Drenthe has been pretty consistent when played.

2 goals and 6 assists in 652mins is pretty impressive stats.

It's the fact he doesn't play which is more of a problem.

I had Jagielka and Adebayor that were more important to go this week.

He's gone on wildcard at 11.30am tomorrow regardless or what happens.

Re: Bale if you look at the games after the first 8 where he hasn't scored.

        stoke, CHEL, swan, EVE.

The games I think were a factor in the first 8 gameweeks, of his poor scores he played

man utd, CITY, wolves, LIV, ARS, new, bla

Against the top teams he hasn't done it, of the other games he has played tough away games (Stoke, Swansea, Newcastle) or tough home game against good defensive unit (Everton).

I did tinker with the idea, but I've now taken out Sturridge and Ade for Rooney and Best instead (on WC). I think Bent could do well with the influence of Keane.

    Current team:

    Vorm Mignolet

    Enrique Richards Cahill Raylor Caulker

    Silva Bale Valencia Sessegnon Surman

    RVP Aguero Sturridge

Originally Bought Vorm for 4.4 and can sell for 4.8 which opens up 0.4 If I bring in Lindergaard - who seems to rotate quite will with Mignolet

SHOULD I DO IT?! Also would mean that I'm not doubling up on Swansea defence AND I get United defensive coverage.. Seems like I should?! Then I can upgrade Surman to either McClean or Dyer

Lindergaard and Mignolet rotate quite well also.

Of course this all rests on whether Lindergaard starts - which I think HE WILL!

    ARGH I SHOULD DO IT!!!?!?!!

Mignolet>lindergaard sounds good in gw28. By then it will be clear how regular of a player is he? My personal guess is that he will start in about 5 out of 7 matches from now till gw28.

I have to be really careful about the price as I will have only 0.1 left after going through these transfers
    A)Mata->McClean
    B)Yakubu->Aguero

Should i go ahead with these transfers or wait for next week?

Looks good to me. Not too keen on Mata for that price and McClean looks a great talent.

Also got Aguero in on my WC, my opponents got far too many points from him while I had him out.

If I was you I would do those ASAP

Depends how long term you are thinking.

Yak to Aguero is certainly a move worth making.

Also depends whether you have Sturridge or not in your current team.

Nice, have had Moses all season and wanted to keep him instead of Mcclean coz he is more certain to start, has been playing well and has shown he can score a decent haul. However, i was short by 0.1 and didnt know where else to get it from so had to make that change
