Scout Report- Taye Taiwo

Mark Hughes’s first move in the January transfer window has seen QPR snap up Taye Taiwo on loan from AC Milan. The left-back arrives at Loftus Road until the end of the season and looks set to boost the London outfit’s quest for survival over the next few months, bringing a much-needed experience to Rangers’ defence.

Tightening up at the back is a fundamental aspect of Hughes’ approach; last season his Fulham side had the joint-fourth best defence in the league, with just 43 goals conceded, and given that QPR have already shipped 37, it’s an issue that requires immediate address.

With Taiwo having struggled to cement a first-team place for the Serie A champions since his summer move from Marseille, the loan certainly suits both parties. Teaming up with Hughes, then, clearly affords Taiwo the opportunity of regular football and a chance to kick-start his career after the disappointing San Siro experience. It’s an opportunity that the defender clearly relishes:

I’m very grateful to Mark Hughes for bringing me here. It is always nice for a player when you know the manager wants you and I will repay his faith in me. I can’t wait to play for the club. I know only hard work, good performance, dedication, and passion will connect me with the fans but I’m prepared. I’m looking forward to what lies ahead and I’m prepared to give my all to the QPR cause.

The Statistics

After a couple of campaigns as a teenager in his homeland, Taiwo made his name at Marseille, signing for the French side as a twenty year old back in 2004-05. Over seven seasons for the Ligue 1 giants, he made 192 league appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 16 assists- clearly he offers a lot more than your average full-back.

Last term was his most successful at club level; Taiwo returned 4 goals and 6 assists in twenty-nine starts as Didier Deschamps’ side finished second behind Lille in the chase for the title. A Bosman move to Milan has proved a major letdown, though. Taiwo made just 4 league appearances in his debut season for Massimo Allegri’s side, falling behind both Luca Antonini and Gianluca Zambrotta in the pecking order for the left-back role.

Taiwo offers plenty of top-class experience, too, having played more than 50 times in all European competitions, and has represented his country on 48 occasions, finding the net 5 times.

The Prospects

The move certainly seems to spell bad news for both Armand Traore and Clint Hill. Having started twelve and nine times respectively at left-back, the pair look set to take a back seat in light of Taiwo’s arrival. Hughes was clearly delighted to acquire the Nigerian’s services and, from his glowing assessment of the player, it’s obvious that Taiwo looks set to be an integral part of QPR’s first XI from now until May:

I have known of him for a long time and admired him from afar. To get him now is a fantastic coup and a real statement of intent that we can attract the quality of player that he is. I am looking forward to working with him.

Backed by the cash of club owner Tony Fernandes, Hughes has wasted little time in strengthening his defence further; Nedum Onouha has completed a moved from Man City earlier today, as the new manager continues to restructure his back line. With a few days left of the transfer window, there’s still plenty time to wheel and deal and bring a couple more faces to Loftus Road.

So far, Hughes has got off to a decent start; a narrow defeat at Newcastle was followed by a 3-1 home win over Wigan last weekend, as he picked up three points in his first game at Loftus Road. Given QPR had chalked up one victory in front of their own fans under Neil Warnock – a 1-0 triumph over nine-man Chelsea- the omens look good and suggest their Fantasy assets could be set for reassessment in light of the new manager’s arrival.

Renowned for his set-piece ability and shooting from distance (check out the YouTube link below), Taiwo will offer plenty threat going forward, in addition to strengthening the back-four. He’s still not available in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a starting price of around 4.5 to 5.0 looks likely- Clint Hill came in at 4.5 and was the costliest QPR defender prior to the start of the season.

With a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon (avl, WOL, bla, FUL, EVE, bol), the London outfit have the strongest schedule of any team over the next six gameweeks. As Hughes looks to engineer a climb away from the drop zone, his new left-back looks to have the perfect opportunity to make an instant impact in his new surroundings.

No, I am. But I do expect him to cost a fair bit, but hopefully QPR's defence will tighten up with all the signings.

i think that was due to his experience in the prem. also hangeland was the most expenive at fulham at 6.5 at the start while qpr's was 2.0 less. 5.0 would be fair

Riise was assumed to be a starter in a defence which kept clean sheets. Hangeland was 6.5.
Taiwo is going into a defence which doesn't keep clean sheets. 5.0 seems very likely.

Are they? Henry isn't going to play much, he will be an impact sub, 7.5m is a lot. Keane is a bargain, not sold on Siggy, i think 5 is a fair price. Taiwo will be between 5 & 5.5.

Really? Looking at the Fulham and Wolves home games alone. Only one side has a worse away record over the last five trips - and that's QPR themselves!

The other home game is Everton - who have scored 3 goals in their last 5 aways.

Then lets look at the QPR away trips - Villa - no wins and 4 defeats, in last 5 home, Bolton 1 win in last 5 home.

That leaves Blackburn away - 2 wins and 3 defeats in last 5 home. That looks to be their hardest game.

Of course, that form can change, but, with the data we've got, I can't really see how those fixtures can be described as anything but "kind".

Well, I respect what you are saying - but I don't agree with it. QPR - with or without anew manager and new players - are in quite a lot of trouble, and it does not seem to me that Sparky is the one to get them out of it. However, that is just my opinion. My ratings, however, are gleaned from results, this Season and last Season. At this stage, this Season has a far greater influence obviously. At the end though, they are just a guide. I realise that your figures are much sophisticated than mine - but mine have helped me this season more than they have hindered me, so I shall stick by them, if you don't mind! 🙂

Looks like you're arguing different things here:

                    1) QPR won't keep clean sheets despite fixtures

                    2) QPR have bad fixtures

Clearly QPR have good fixtures but their clean sheet potential is a matter of subjective opinion.

No worries Doosra - tbh, our figures are based on current form so they're really not that sophisticated, we're not taking in data from last season. Like you say, it's all just a guide and there's no wrong or right answer - it's all opinion, albeit opinions guided by data.

😆 Cheers, Mark. I am sure your figures are top notch, though. 🙂 The split for mine is now 22/38 this Season, 16/38 last season. The figures for QPR, Norwich and Swansea are necessarily somewhat cobbled, as their Season was longer, and had to be adjusted to fit.

Only just turned - most of my fellow Wolves turned a long time ago. I've just had enough of the lack of ambition, lack of quality defensive signings and lack of tactical nouse!
I've stuck by Mick through thick and thing and actually really like him but he's not really very good at prem level.

You're not wrong Mike - it is actually both. I don't think Mick is that savvy a manager. Great bloke and loved by his players, but not a very technical brain. The Chairman is more interested in building projects than improving the team. There's no real will to step up to prem level transfer fees or salaries. The majority of our players are the same guys that got us promoted nearly 4 years ago. It just gets so boring watching your team under achieve week in week out. Such poverty of aspiration. If we are not prepared to step up, I'd rather be a moderately successful Championship team to be honest.

Mick sounds like the right man for the job. If your chairman is looking to change infrastructure to build for the future, then you need a manager who can be relied upon to keep you bobbing along at the bottom of the prem. Mick is pretty good at that. Though you are right he wont ever win the league.

Hi all. I know you must be sick of seeing squads, not to mention the time between now and next gameweek, but mine is a little different to the apparent standard. Partially due to lack of funds but also because… well it’s a bit boring to just do as everyone else is.

    Lindy
    Cahill, Richards, Kaboul
    McClean, Silva, Sess, Bale
Aguero, RVP, Ba (just added today, was Bobby Z)

    Krul, Bardsley, Santon, Pilkington

Should add that I am on WC so alterations are unlimited. I’ve switched Pilkington in and out many times already over the last few days, can’t quite make a decision between him and Dyer but I think Norwich are always likely to score against any opponent and Swansea can’t quite match that.

Got 0.9 funds available, any opinions welcome!

one thing that is more tiresome then WC squads, are WC squads with lengthy intro and outros.

but since i am on WC myself, why not!

      not good:
Kaboul (tough fixtures, has apparently gotten himself slightly injured, has hard contention from Dwason)
Bardsley is slightly expensive no? He also gets many yellows.
Have a feeling Santon is less nailed on than Williamson.

Get some money from defence into the midfield. Can you do Kaboul to Kelly and Pilk to Valencia?

Weak midfield, no need for Sess and Mclean, don't like Pilkington! Downgrade Cahill (rotation risk) and Kaboul (bad fixtures) > Senderos Caulker and upgrade Pilks and either Sess/Mclean!

Sess and McClean is overload pick one - probably Sess because you can switch him to Walters if his form drops.
Kaboul Spurs fixtures are rubbish - look at Evans also rubbish fixtures but much cheaper and playing in a better defence.
Cahill - rotation risk - could be worth taking though but alongside a more solid defence.
Dyer over Pilko - he'll come on for the 2 pts if you need it - Pilko could be rotated in a good fixture.

Also looks like your funds are stretched perhaps pick one of Aguero and Silva and then look at a cheaper replacement and slight upgrades in a couple of positions?

So first half of the season belonged to the the big three expensive strikers will the second half see us all getting the cheaper ones ie Ba Welbeck Dzeko or will the big boys come back to form?

Funny you know, I bought him in on my WC two weeks ago, with my eye on Vermaelen who was injured at the time, so I said, hey, Terry can hold his spot until he's back from injury, Since then Terry's given me 6 + 6 and I can't drop him on that form. (Same with Dzeko who's holding Ba's place and has given me 9 + 5.) He's always a threat at set pieces, and I quietly fancy Chelsea (incl. defence) to do well for the rest of the season. Bosingwa has been crossing my mind as well recently.

Interesting. Leaning towards Cole myself to join Kompany, Simpson, Senderos, Caulker. But not sure yet. I'm hanging on to Adebayor for at least this GW and then moving him for Ba with RVP and Morison the other 2. Thoughts on Cole?

I think there is a bit more to it than whether to play cheap or expensive strikers. I am just interested that at the begining of the window many of the WC teams had RVP/Rooney/Aguero up front and now v few do.

This season though there are less big boys. gerrard and Lampard are yesterday's news. There's no season long Ronaldo anymore, or the mega pts of Fabregas. Rooney is off form, Nani crocked and formless. Ageuro is only good for home games. FPL is in transition and holding out for a new hero...to broadly paraphrase Bonnie Tyler.

Don't know how you can say this when Ba is in the top 3 strikers FPL points wise...
RVP will always give you points, Ba should come good still and then you have to chuck another striker in their that you will think will do well in my opinion.

Ba is 1 point off the third top scorer (Bale) and 2 points off second (Silva) despite playing 1449 minutes compared to Siva's 1694 and Bale's 1890. Count him among the big boys.

Hi Demi, always respect your input. Shotton was the obvious- besides the Fulham incident Toon have been impressive at the back, were Pool have been terrible of late, though Skirtel does offer something at the other end to be fare

Yeah, and it's still Wolves against a team that have kept 8 cleansheets this season. I think the Bolton result was an anomaly, and don't fully trust Newcastle at the back without Tiote. Certainly more vulnerable to concede without him. Just think basically that Blackburn are more likely to score than Wolves, in general.

agreed, i have gone Ramires to Sess, 2 Sunderland in the middle is a little dangerous and probly lacked planning. i am trying to stay in the cup and am up against Silva hope i have enough fire power- think my opposition might just do Nani to Dempsey
your thoughts would be greatly appreciated

He's got Nani injured so that's advantage you already. I think the threat of his Silva can be quashed by you having Rooney. Don't see any problem with having Sess and McClean at the moment, with their next 2 fixtures looking good for returns, and he likes of Walters/Sinclair/Dyer having a tough game. Wouldn't keep those 2 long term though, but for the next 2 it's fine. Notice you have Krul too. I'd play him, and bench Simpson to counter your opponent probably playing Krul. Furthermore Norwich do score often too. Think your team is solid, and stands a good chance of winning as it is. If he does Nani to Dempsey, then it's no bother as he doesnt gain an advantage, and if he takes a 4 pt hit, it's advantage you again.

Good luck in the cup. Im out 🙁
