Scout Reports

Scout Report- Taye Taiwo

Mark Hughes’s first move in the January transfer window has seen QPR snap up Taye Taiwo on loan from AC Milan. The left-back arrives at Loftus Road until the end of the season and looks set to boost the London outfit’s quest for survival over the next few months, bringing a much-needed experience to Rangers’ defence.

Tightening up at the back is a fundamental aspect of Hughes’ approach; last season his Fulham side had the joint-fourth best defence in the league, with just 43 goals conceded, and given that QPR have already shipped 37, it’s an issue that requires immediate address.

With Taiwo having struggled to cement a first-team place for the Serie A champions since his summer move from Marseille, the loan certainly suits both parties. Teaming up with Hughes, then, clearly affords Taiwo the opportunity of regular football and a chance to kick-start his career after the disappointing San Siro experience. It’s an opportunity that the defender clearly relishes:

I’m very grateful to Mark Hughes for bringing me here. It is always nice for a player when you know the manager wants you and I will repay his faith in me. I can’t wait to play for the club. I know only hard work, good performance, dedication, and passion will connect me with the fans but I’m prepared. I’m looking forward to what lies ahead and I’m prepared to give my all to the QPR cause.

The Statistics

After a couple of campaigns as a teenager in his homeland, Taiwo made his name at Marseille, signing for the French side as a twenty year old back in 2004-05. Over seven seasons for the Ligue 1 giants, he made 192 league appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 16 assists- clearly he offers a lot more than your average full-back.

Last term was his most successful at club level; Taiwo returned 4 goals and 6 assists in twenty-nine starts as Didier Deschamps’ side finished second behind Lille in the chase for the title. A Bosman move to Milan has proved a major letdown, though. Taiwo made just 4 league appearances in his debut season for Massimo Allegri’s side, falling behind both Luca Antonini and Gianluca Zambrotta in the pecking order for the left-back role.

Taiwo offers plenty of top-class experience, too, having played more than 50 times in all European competitions, and has represented his country on 48 occasions, finding the net 5 times.

The Prospects

The move certainly seems to spell bad news for both Armand Traore and Clint Hill. Having started twelve and nine times respectively at left-back, the pair look set to take a back seat in light of Taiwo’s arrival. Hughes was clearly delighted to acquire the Nigerian’s services and, from his glowing assessment of the player, it’s obvious that Taiwo looks set to be an integral part of QPR’s first XI from now until May:

I have known of him for a long time and admired him from afar. To get him now is a fantastic coup and a real statement of intent that we can attract the quality of player that he is. I am looking forward to working with him.

Backed by the cash of club owner Tony Fernandes, Hughes has wasted little time in strengthening his defence further; Nedum Onouha has completed a moved from Man City earlier today, as the new manager continues to restructure his back line. With a few days left of the transfer window, there’s still plenty time to wheel and deal and bring a couple more faces to Loftus Road.

So far, Hughes has got off to a decent start; a narrow defeat at Newcastle was followed by a 3-1 home win over Wigan last weekend, as he picked up three points in his first game at Loftus Road. Given QPR had chalked up one victory in front of their own fans under Neil Warnock – a 1-0 triumph over nine-man Chelsea- the omens look good and suggest their Fantasy assets could be set for reassessment in light of the new manager’s arrival.

Renowned for his set-piece ability and shooting from distance (check out the YouTube link below), Taiwo will offer plenty threat going forward, in addition to strengthening the back-four. He’s still not available in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a starting price of around 4.5 to 5.0 looks likely- Clint Hill came in at 4.5 and was the costliest QPR defender prior to the start of the season.

With a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon (avl, WOL, bla, FUL, EVE, bol), the London outfit have the strongest schedule of any team over the next six gameweeks. As Hughes looks to engineer a climb away from the drop zone, his new left-back looks to have the perfect opportunity to make an instant impact in his new surroundings.

Because - only in my opinion - he has slightly better form.

Secondly, in the next two matches Citeh will need height and brawn, imo.

Apologies for another long post. I'm obsessed with the blue half of Manchester at the moment. I can't seem to get them out from under the Microscope. In the Petri dish today is the Aguero v Silva debate. This is not advice as such but simply a cautionary tale...

Preseason, it was widely accepted that having City players especially with their favourable run of opening games, was optimal. The question was who to get? A lot of us questioned how quickly Aguero would be introduced to the fold, how he would perform in a new league/country and whether he could justify his price tag. Any fears were quickly addressed when he announced his arrival in GW1 with 2 goals and an assist in a blazing 32 minute substitute appearance. Many immediately jumped on the Agueroplane with their GW2 wildcard, I was part of the camp who subscribed to the philosophy that “only fools rush in” and decided to wait and see.

However by the time the international break kicked in after GW3, and wildcards were feverishly being activated, Aguero's bombastic introduction had been overshadowed by the form of a certain Edin Dzeko. Scoring in all 3 of the opening games, Dzeko had bagged 6 goals in 3 games including the infamous 4 goals against Spurs at WHL. At £3m cheaper, having eclipsed Aguero’s 3 goals at that stage and with his price set to rocket it looked like a “no brainer” to me.

A 3rd wildcard in the space of 3 weeks was a little too much of a luxury for me at that time so I instead decided to make tweaks instead of wholesale changes. Instead of getting Aguero, which would have involved a restructuring, I opted for the more in-form and cheaper Dzeko like a lot of people over that break. 5 hellish gameweeks followed where Dzeko only got 2 starts and 0 goals or assists, I personally gave up on him after only 3 of those gameweeks. It was painful watching on as Aguero's 5 goals against WIG and ful in GW4 and GW5 (coupled with Rooney's 4 goals against bol CHE but that is a story for another time) absolutely murdered me and has left me playing "catch-up" all season.

Here we are again then in GW23 with similar circumstances; another set of favourable fixtures for City, wildcards fluttering, question marks over Aguero's ability to justify his price tag and a seemingly nailed on Dzeko in good form. This time however, I am boxing clever. With Aguero's 37.5% ownership which also includes some of the big players in my ML versus Dzeko's 13.1% and no representation in my ML, I am going Aguero as I refuse to get left behind again.

Just a word to the wise, don't have short memories, it might help to remember what happened last time. Past experience can count for little in this game, history may or may not repeat itself. Some of us may need to gamble, some of us may not. Just make sure you think clearly about which best case/worst case scenario suits you the most and go with that.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Top quality stuff. For what its worth if I were WCing this week I've have Dzeko but next I'd have Aguero and then keep him for 24-27 only (unless he does hit amazing form I guess).

Not angling for any writing job, didn't even apply for it as I'd have no chance considering the quality of the new writers.

I don't like wildcarding with planned changes down the line. The landscape is eternally changing so I like to have my 1 FT always available. Decent startegy though.

Great post. I am chosing Dzeko specifically BECAUSE of the LOWER ownership level. Either I'm playing further catch up or I start to make ground, that's the way I see it now. Plus I really like him as a player, which helps. I definitly believe that Silva + Aguero is overkill from City on a ££££ basis, but can happily afford Silva + Dzeko and still keep a good balance to my 15.

Yeah its a bit of that, but also because I started with Krul, Saylor and Cabaye and then just always kept Rooney, Adebayor and RVP pretty much since the start.

I did pick Bendtner above him one week though, that was possibly the most ludicrous thing I have ever done in FPL.

Completely agree with you for what it's worth. Aguero played every PL game in which he's been fit (i think, maybe with the exception of Sunderland?) and out of the two he's who i'll be getting.
Think both Silva and Aguero will do just fine over the next 5 weeks.

Is there anything else i can try and help with on your WC? (im aware that i'll be using mine next week and i am DEFINITELY going to need your help!

am a bit sceptical. a point i'd make is ba costs 7.3 so he only needs to be half the player he was pre-ACON to be worthwhile.
when he left for the tournament he was on 128 points, take another big gun like silva for example he was on 116. puts in perspective just how incredible ba was

but for him to get 6-10pts in all three games would mean they are either comfortable wins or its just him stealing the points from aguero silva nasri etc

              one goal each game.

aguero cannot score away, so it will be 2,8,2 for him.

yeah, just speaking for myself i was struggling to find a 3rd striker until ba was back (thought that would be more like gw26 a few days ago), sturridge playing man utd and everton for example, so dzeko would have plugged that hole for me, the fixtures were good enough, expecially considering how well dzeko does away from home.
luckily ba is back now though

Well, I know from watching Cissé in the Bundesliga what he's capable of, so that's why I'm tempted. Agree that Ba is the safer option for the moment however.

In "real" football terms, your team's got themselves a cracking dual strike force for very little money - I'm really looking forward to seeing the Double Dembas work wonders.

    Richards, Evans, BAE (Shotton, Enrique)
    Sess, Bale, Silva, Dempsey (Moses)
    RvP Rooney Fletcher

Save transfer this round and then do:

Rooney + Fletcher + BAE -> Aguero + BA + Defender for 5.4 or less (4 point hit)
    OR
Rooney + Moses -> Ba + Valencia before next weekend?

    Sounds like a plan?

No, Ream made his US debut just after the World Cup, I think. He's comfortable on the ball, but is prone to defensive lapses.

I had ruled out Lindegaard and was going with Mignolet to rotate with Krul.

I needed bloody Vorm to rise to get the extra 0.1 and he's on 96% for a rise, but Lindegaard has overtaken all week.

As I'm not getting Welbeck now it also frees up the Utd spot, so need to make decision on Lindegaard tonight now.

      Hmmmmm.

    For those interested.

Kelly/Senderos would rotate with Taiwo wonderfully:

WBA, WOL, STO, FUL, EVE, ast, SWA, sun, NOR, bol, SWA, wba, WIG, eve, STO

    That's up to GW37.

Seems to be for the time being! People thought Baird would threaten his position but Ruiz was taken off for Baird against Newcastle. I know that was more a change in tactic though.

Although when defensive subs have been made he hasn't suffered. Not that there have been many.

He seems 1st choice having had a look through the last 6/7 fixtures. Unchanged back 4, even in the FA Cup.

hmmmm....as a Kelly owner you've just excited me. I prefer Onouha (4.6) though, as he has the premiership stats to back him up...but that rotation could work out really well.

Until he actually scores and clean sheets I'm filing under Lolorov. When his howitzers thunder in then I'll hop aboard his bandwagon. For now I prefer the reliability of the Onouhanautilis.

Onouha has never had big returns, so feel together with 0.1 cheaper, the risk of following the crowd should be pretty minimal, as assuming they both start then clean sheets will be equal, it'll just be the goals and assists that make the difference.
