Champions League – Matchday Seven – This Much We Know, Part 2

Cristiano Ronaldo scores another for Madrid. Andre Villas-Boas has a night to forget at the Stadio San Paolo as Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi tear Chelsea apart, while two Champions League heavyweights suffer a first-leg deficit on the road. Here’s our round up of the European action as Matchday Seven finally came to a close…

AVB On The Brink

As confirmed in yesterday’s Scout Scribbles, Chelsea’s trip to Napoli didn’t get off to the best of starts, when confirmation filtered through that John Terry required exploratory surgery on his on-going knee problem. The day didn’t end much better, either.

A 3-1 defeat in the Stadio San Paolo will only add fuel to talk in the media of an early Stamford Bridge exit for Andre Villas-Boas, as the young manager walks the precarious tightrope of employment found under the stewardship of the notoriously impatient Roman Abramovich. The Blues continued presence in the Champions League seemed, to many, to be one of Villas-Boas’ saving graces in the eyes of the Russian oligarch; this first leg defeat will not have served to have helped matters.

As for the on-pitch action, things started nigh-on perfectly for the visitors, when Juan Mata -doing our Matchday preview some justice- found himself on the penalty spot to capitalise on a back-pass/bobbly pitch combination and tuck the ball away.

Chelsea more than held their own through much of the game, in fact, but the effervescent power of the Napoli strike-force eventually overcame the Blues’ back-four. Ezequiel Lavezzi levelled affairs with a sumptuous strike from outside the box, then, not to be outdone, Edinson Cavani had just the right amount of nous and gumption to shoulder home a pitch perfect cross past Petr Cech just before half time.

The South American pair then combined for the third half-way through the second period, as Cavani set up Lavezzi to dumbfound David Luiz before finding the net. Cavani ended the match with 11 points, just pipping Lavezzi’s 10.

Even the tactic of purposefully leaving behind fake line-ups in hotel rooms couldn’t help Villas-Boas in the end, however. With an away goal in their pocket Chelsea aren’t out of the tie just quite yet, but the London outfit will certainly need a sharp turnaround in form before the reverse fixture next month.

CRISTIANO RONALDO SCORES GOALS

A comfortable game in uncomfortable conditions afforded Jose Mourinho’s runaway La Liga leaders a 1-1 result that wasn’t particularly reflective of their performance. It left the Real Madrid manager with a smile on his face, though, as his side came away from Russia relatively unscathed, with a home game in warmer climes to follow.

Mourinho had Cristiano Ronaldo to thank for Real’s only goal. The Portuguese superstar opened the scoring for the visitors, picking up his fourth goal of the campaign in his fifth appearance. As the boys at Opta kindly pointed out, the former United winger has now bagged a mere 111 goals in 109 League and European matches.

European Fantasy managers who opted for Madrid front-line alternatives to Ronaldo will feel slightly hard done by. Karim Benzema was unfortunate enough to be withdrawn through injury inside a quarter of an hour, while replacement Gonzalo Higuain could or should really have been flying home with some kind of points tally.

Pontus Wernbloom (despite having a name more akin to a Pirates of the Caribbean character than a Swede making his debut in sub-zero Russian temperatures) gave the attending Muscovites plenty to cheer about. His injury time goal crushed many European Fantasy managers’ clean sheets in the process, yours truly included.

A trip to the Bernabeu awaits CSKA and, while realistic expectations will favour Mourinho’s men to come out very much on top, the omens are better than one might expect if history is anything to go by. CSKA have twice before faced Spanish sides in two-legged games and, on both occasions, they drew at home before winning the away leg. We’re just putting that out there.

RECENT FINALISTS, CURRENT STRUGGLERS

The 2009/10 season was the one year in recent history where the Champions League final was completely void of Barcelona altogether. Bayern Munich and Inter Milan were instead the two sides involved in the showdown at the Bernabeu, with the latter eventually wining 2-0.

Cut to a little short of two years later and European fortunes are less than stellar for the German and Italian heavyweights. They both suffered 0-1 away defeats at the hands of “lesser” Gallic sides FC Basel and Marseille – the French team getting the better of Inter and the Swiss outfit having the first leg advantage on the Bundesliga side.

Only one of the Inter starting XI had found the net this calendar year and that man, Maicon, was substituted at half time for Yuto Nagatomo. It was frankly no surprise, given their recent performances, that the result didn’t favour the Italians and is indicative of a downturn in form that has seen Claudio Ranieri’s side draw one and lose six of their last seven fixtures.

By comparison, Bayern are in far less of a crisis. Granted, they are not (like Inter) 14 points off the top of their domestic league but Jupp Heynckes’ side are trailing last year’s winners Borussia Dortmund and could face a second season in a row without the title- something that hasn’t occurred in Germany for nigh-on almost sixteen seasons.

This is all without mentioning the home sides. Both Basel and Marseille were worthy winners and travel away in a fortnight’s time with confidence buoyed by last night’s performances. The ties are still wide open, but, thanks to late goals from Andre Ayew (Marseilles) and substitute Valentin Stocker (Basel), confidence will only be growing, as 90 minutes and a goal advantage separates these two sides from the quarter finals.

    Hi folks,

Looks like Mancini will play one ‘striker’ now that Yaya is back, even in home games by the looks of it!

I think it’s time to shift Dzeko, but who for? I’ve got 2 FTs and my options at the moment are

    - Bent (would mean downgrading Sess for someone like Taraabt, Siggy, Moses or even O’Hara to free up funds – not sure if he’s worth the hassle/money)
    - Studge (not in the greatest form but his short-term fixtures offer a great platform)
    - Zamora (Started the season with him but not quite sold on him yet in a QPR shirt, fixtures look good)
    - Graham (best cheapie that would allow me to upgrade my mid with Mata, Nani etc.

Any opinions or idea would be welcome! Team is linked. Cheers!

Yeah, I nearly had him as another choice but Dzeko > Yak before City vs. B'burn seems foolish! Even if Dzeko doesn't start, he'll probably come on and get a point and Yak's looks set for 2 points... not worth the risk of Dzeko playing and bagging some points.

I agree with Optimus. Ignoring the fact he plays CIty in the next game, i'd go with Yakubu. In regards to Yaya Toure, i think when De Jong gets dropped, City would revert back to 2 strikers, with Yaya and Barry in CM, so Dzeko would still get games, but i'd sell him anyway. Too much of a rotation risk.

See my above comment on Dzeko > Yak - I'm not risking it! Plus I could always get him in after the City game since I will still have 2 FTs

I would be very surprised if City didn't start with 2 up top for next 2 games. Although its likely it will be Aguero Balotelli can you not downgrade elsewhere and get Aguero or Rooney?

I'm reposting this sorry if you've read it in the previous column

Hi, I have a query about the rules of FCL, I see that I have 1 Free Transfer for “Round of 16 Second leg”. I would like to know what will happen if I do not use my free transfer. Will I then have 7 transfers instead of 6 in “Quarter-finals 1st leg”. Also what will happen if I only use 3 out of 6(or 7) transfers in “”Quarter-finals 1st leg”? Will I then have 4(5) Transfers in “Quarter-finals 2nd leg”?

tl;dr: Do Transfers Carry over? If so, how many and for howlong?

I can understand that Lampard isnt the same player he was, but its a joke that chelsea fans are giving him abuse everytime he comes on. What is he meant to do, refuse to play as he realises he isnt up to the same standard anymore? Ive never liked the player politics in chelsea, the likes of john terry, ashley cole and on occasions lampard and even Drog make my blood curdle but its not going to change if AVB doesnt take him aside, explain why he isnt 'good enough' to grace the field with the likes of malouda, bosingwa, luiz and sturridge. I personally think AvB is a poor man manager, and is far too young to deal with the egos of lampard. Not entirely his fault either as i anticipate that the 'player power' at porto or most clubs is nothing compared to at chelsea. But you cant teach a dog new tricks and it is precisely that egotistical, driven attitude in characters of players like Lampard, Terry, Cole, Drog et al that proved the major factor in chelsea winning the league so many times . Lampard must be sold, this is the truth, (see how fergie handled keane) but for now, chelsea fans must accept he is there and due to his nature will expect to play and must play considering the astronomical wages. Its unfortunate that he feels that way but would you rather have Michael owen who is happy to sit on the bench and claim a few quid?

I dont think so, not at the Bridge, but there is a general fickle hatred generating amongst chelsea fans towards him? In fairness just like Roy Keane, Lampard is a complicated driven individual, and its those complications which make him the beast of a player they once were and brought them their success. But every player has a sell by date and lamps is now. But its the manager who must sell him. You cant expect Lampard to sell himself?

Lamps gets lots of abuse but it can't be denied he had a lot of threat as a player, on the other hand he wasn't technically that good and didn't really do close control - he won't work in every system. I think there are plenty more dislikable players at Chelsea, I think he should get credit for playing his heart out.

He is being played millions of pounds to be a manager so he is open to criticism. At the end of the day, whilst you may appreciate his strategic knowhow, you must have a happy camp. Its a juxtaposition of errors which were made. AvB should have sat with the players at the start of the season and adressed them with regard his plans. He should of realised shortly into the season that he is dealing with a different situation than porto rather than letting this mess peak at the most pivotal part of the season. As i say hes paid to manage, players to play.

Always going to be a hard couple of season breaking up the fading Morinho team .
Cant see the moving back up until Terry , Drog & lamp are moved on . All good players
but like when Pardew sold Nolan , Barton etc...Chelsea need to create a new team .

On AVB, I think he's almost the definition of a football nerd and if he could practice his system unhindered it might be interesting. The fact is, he doesn't have the real life resources to make it happen at the moment - man management, money, an understanding owner, the right players, or maybe a little bit of humility not to take off his best player against Wigan and throw away the lead?

on chelsea, feel they have always had that "attitude" with a kinda kings rd swagger (goes back to the 70's i think) that either appealed or didnt to other fans....a north south thing here as well terrys attitude is synomous with it imo and has always turned me off them and will clearly be a very different place from porto for poor ole AVB, they clearly need to rebuild and isaki gets it right with the resources to pull it off so while i disagree with finding chelsea likeable ya do av to feel a little sorry for their manager

I hate the current Chelsea, I think maybe Zola made up for everything else about them for me... I could stand him while he was there. Bet they were irritating at times though.

I do feel sorry for AVB yeah, but I think it's true that he also is arrogant without a sense of humour about it, and I felt he doesn't take small teams seriously enough to get the win no matter what, the Wigan substitution appalled me as a neutral

That team may have done better, but I think you underestimate Napoli.

Mata was best behind the striker, not on the left.

Lampard needs someone (Ramires?) driving up beside him.

The team is still very narrow and would leave gaps at RB for Cavani and Lavezzi to exploit.

May not have conceded 3, but would not have scored more than 1.

Afternoon all. So glad it's almost time for some FPL action again, it has been a long two weeks!

Just wondering how much gametime people expect Lindegaard to get on his return from injury now? From seemingly having secured his place as first choice, I'm now thinking De Gea has maybe done enough for Fergie to stick by him instead. Is it time for Lindy to go?

Bit of a shame as he was my Utd defence preffered pick.

No I don't think he is fit yet, sorry if my wording implied that! Hoping for an update from Fergie tomorrow maybe but getting twitchy as Lindy heading for a drop and I will prob replace him with Mignolet if I do sell, who is edging closer to rising.

Have 2 transfers this week and not a lot else I want to change with my team at the mo so this would be the ideal time to make the switch if I'm going to do it.

True, I still have non-playing Stockdale lmao so I'm torn between bringing in Mignolet who has such a mean defence, but worsening fixtures, and taking the very tempting gamble on Lindy.

TBH I think the United slot may well prove more important than which keeper you select. You may well want 1 DEF 1 MID 1 FWD to the end of the season.

Rooney and two United defenders you mean? Hmmm I definitely would want United midfield cover and that's where the 1 DEF 1 MID 1 FWD comes from. You could have 1 GK (Lindy) instead and it would be great value, the thing is that clean sheets are very hard to come by right now and it may be more pressing to have one of your 5 DEF slots filled instead than one of your 2 GK slots.

Indeed. Valencia injury is another pain in the backside. Currently sitting on Valencia and Lindy, my Utd trio was going to be completed with Rooney in for gw28.

Had it all planned to perfection. Like to play 3 at the back and wanted a first choice defence of Kompany, G.Johnson and Assou-Ekotto with Lindy in goal for the run in. Might have to adjust my thinking now to encorporate Evans instead, maybe Reina in goal as my Liverpool option.

Haha! Well it was going to be Lindy/G.Johnson but if Lindy is not an option then Evans/Reina would be a similarly priced alternative. I usually favour a cheapish defence but I've got a pretty reasonable team value and with clean sheets being quite hard to come by, the fixtures for Utd, Spurs, Liv and City suggest there could be plenty defensive points to be had in the run in.

Thanks for all your thoughts folks.

I have the same 3 and am playing JEvans along with Richards and Caulker, with Kelly and Dawson on the bench. Still undecided between McLean and Siggy, the start is currently with McLean but I am sorely tempted to revert and give the start to Siggy (see comments on this on Wildrover post above for more)

    Sorry for the repost

    Advise please

Tony V injured, Rooney a doubt,
    1) Simple – just play Moses & Kelly/Caulker and Save Transfer
    2) Are you having a giraffe – Tony V & Richards to Yaya & Jones. Already Have Evans and Silva

Looking to ship out Vorm next wk - suggestions please? One to keep till season end. Mignolet is my other keeper.

Or should I hang on to Vorm?

He was my initial target but come gw 29, I'll have no keeper to play.. 😕

after laying under 1.5 goals in the Basel - Bayern Munich game and losing I've opted for the same bet in the Ath Madrid - Lazio game, fingers crossed!

I got royally f*cked by that match, put a tenner on a Bayern win (2.0) and a tenner on 2.5 goals or more (1.9).

Nice to share some pain 😉 It was a total upset, I had Kroos and Gomez(C) in UCL fantasy footy as well... I wonder if my betting tactics are wrong, maybe I should be going for punts with more return than 1.9-2 so that I can afford the odd slip-up.
