Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek Twenty Eight

Trudging down the disciplinary corridors of power to find their fate this week, like naughty schoolboys destined for the headmaster, are a Jamaican veteran of Premier League spells at Portsmouth, Southampton and more recently Stoke City, and a Swedish international with over one hundred appearances for West Bromwich Albion.

First up is Stoke’s Ricardo Fuller, whose ill timed kick out at Branislav Ivanovic early in Saturday’s loss at Stamford Bridge resulted in a red card from referee Andre Marriner. Having been on the end of a strong challenge from the Serbian, Fuller could legitimately have gone to ground and may even have got a favourable decision, but in the end his rash stamp – labelled “stupid” and “ridiculous” by his manager Tony Pulis – forced a decision the other way and spared Ivanovic any censure of his own. Fuller will now miss the weekend FA Cup tie at Liverpool and Premier League games at Spurs and home to Manchester City. Jonathan Walters is seemingly set to reprise his support striker role with the imminent return of Matthew Etherington to the wing.

Next in line for the carpet, thanks to two yellow cards in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United is West Brom defender Jonas Olsson. Having been booked early in the second half for a foul on goalscorer Wayne Rooney, Olsson was then guilty of a lunge on his strike partner Javier Hernandez in the 66th minute and duly saw the red card produced. Roy Hodgson will now be without his regular centre-back for the trip to Wigan at the weekend, meaning either  a rare start for England U21 defender Craig Dawson, or a reshuffling of Liam Ridgwell into the centre with Nicky Shorey in at left-back.

Finally, taking a seat just outside the headmaster’s office amongst the leafy ferns and sweet perfume of his secretary, is Arsenal’s French international defender, Laurent Koscielny. As we’ve previously reported, there have been some complications with Koscielny’s disciplinary record, thanks mainly to a mis-attributed card in the New Years Eve win over QPR in which centre-back partner, Thomas Vermaelen was reportedly booked, only for the caution to be reassigned to Koscielny a week later. That extra booking made the yellow received in the last gasp Monday night win over Newcastle his ninth, and he will now balance on the tightrope for the next few games hoping to reach the Easter cut off on April 8 without further cautions. After that date the threshold is raised up to 15 bookings.

GAMEWEEK 29 BANS

  • Ricardo Fuller (STO) – 1 Red for violent conduct (second of 3 matches)
  • Lee Cattermole (SUN) – 1 Red for foul and abusive language and 10 Yellows (third of 4 matches)
  • Stéphane Sessègnon (SUN) – 1 Red for violent conduct (last of 3 matches)
  • Nathan Dyer (SWA) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 3 matches)
  • Jonas Olsson (WBA) – 1 Red for 2 Yellows (1 match)

    United wing rotation.

Nani hasn't travelled to Bilbao whereas Valencia and Young have.

Not sure that means a whole lot as Nani was injured a little last week, probably means that he isn't a first choice threat at the moment as this is a must win for us.

+1. Are you also keeping Tony since his injury? That was a ride.... 8.3 before injury, 7.6 now. I have a similar situation with Vincent, also keeping.

Agree with this. I think it might be quite likely to see Young and Nani this weekend. If not the same starting XI as last week.

No Karl Henry so hopefully no injuries vs Wolves 🙂

Morning tosemeister. Pool defence pulled through for you. I was fearing the worse in the first couple of minutes.

A couple (c) Gerrard and shot up the rankings. A guy in Jafalad's SX league scored 80 odd points after Gerrard. (c). The same guy Pog(c) for his hat trick a week or two ago. Crazy.

          Nice move up the ranking.

I take that as Nani playing at the weekend, Valencia coming back and playing 2 in a row is maybe unlikely. A must win? Really? It's the Europa League, u were in the Champions League final last year! The PL >>>>>>>> The EL in terms of your priorities. No question.

Well I wasn't expecting that last night.

Logs off for the night on 62 (58) points. Gets a Skrtel cleanie to put me on 68 (64) and falls back almost 25% of the rank I was at last night!

It's a green arrow, but not as much as I was expecting.

Suarez still can't finish his tea though and Gerrard is a risk as he doesn't seem to play every game. I'm definitely still staying clear of Liverpool's Mid/Att

That's my thinking. I aim to move around my midfield with the fixtures for rest of season. Plan to have gerrard, lampard and walcott all for when they have wigan and the likes. Admit they're all punts, but will hopefully be differentials that could pay off.

Gerrard. Price rise and fill the gap for 2gws till I get lamps in. Hate jumping on bandwagons but he has to be worth a punt as long as he gets game time next couple games, i.e. no injuiries

Still, I captained him this week over Gerrard as a last minute swap... 🙁

Ok, I need to make a decision regarding my defence. I would imagine there are quite a few in a similar predicament.

I've been light at the back all season due to the scarcity of clean sheets and therefore the lack of value of the £6m+ players. I've been going with Kompany + 4 rotating defenders but over time I've ended up with BAE, Kompany, Skrtel + 2 cheap players.

I want to get rid of 1 for Evans and maybe a second for Shotton/Caulker (which would allow me to do Suarez > Rooney). The question is: who?

BAE - the lowest selling price of the three at £5.7m, he has done me extremely well but surely his attacking returns will decline now. Also I'm just not sure if Spurs will regain their defensive solidity. They've got average-good fixtures so who knows?

Kompany - his injury is probably only short-term but even so, he's missed a lot of gametime with injuried/bans due to non-league commitments. He's got the highest selling price with £6.6m and if you think the fixtures are significant, they're certainly not the best. However, City look to be putting the emphasis on defence at the moment and he could continue grinding out clean sheet after clean sheet regardless until the end of the season.

Skrtel - I just don't know what to make of Liverpool. Is this really a sign that they're about to hit form? With Agger coming back (hopefully) in the next couple of games, he *could* be a real gem with significant clean sheet and attacking potential. For £6.3m though, I he could easily be a waste of money if the clean sheets/goals fail to materialise.

I'm looking to the move(s) in the next 2 game weeks. Any tips/thoughts/insight? Cheers

I would lose BAE from those 3. They are off form just now, not looking like shutting teams out and his attacking returns seem a long time ago now. Good fixtures from GW31 but I can see a stuttering end to their season.

All good points. Stoke (H) should be a good indication, I'll wait till after that game before moving him out (if I decide to go that way).

How about doing Kompany/Skrtel > Shotton/Caulker (or even McCauly)?

Yeah either of them would work. Especially with CS on the increase for the cheaper players. Use this GW to decide how Spurs do at home to Stoke, whether Liverpool can continue their good defensive play from last night and to see if Kompany is back fit.

Ridgewell, McAuley or Caulker for me.

You're right in wanting to get Evans in, I think he is a must have for the whole rest of the season, both with United's fixtures and their clean sheet record. I too have had BAE for a while but just think Tottenham will crumble from now on. Man City defence is pretty vital IMO, their run in isnt terrible and they're capable of keeping a clean sheet against anyone on their day.

      IMO: BAE out for Evans

Yeah, that's always a possiblity, but my priority is Suarez > Rooney and I need funds for it. I think I'll hold tight this week and save the transfer but I want to make at least one defensive change.

I'm bringing in Evans anyway in the next couple of weeks (assuming he still looks secure in the first 11) but I'm also considering getting rid of a second of the 3 for a super cheap defender (probably Caulker) so I can do Surarez > Rooney (by GW31 at the latest). What do you think?

Even if I sell Skrtel and Kompany for Evans and Caulker, my budget won't stretch to allow Ba > Rooney. Value-wise I'd rather have Ba than Suarez anyway.

I think this may apply (to some extent) to their attack, but 13 CS in 28 games and less than 2 goal conceded in 23 gamaes says they are a serious consideration for clean sheets, regardless of opponent.

Depending on Spurs' slide, there are not many credible alternatives to Ade if you want 3 strong strikers up front.

Siggy as a 5th midfielder could cover but we'd need Mario to miss full games, rather than have sub apps.

That's a stupid comment. Suarez's style of play is never going to be a out and out striker / goal poacher, he often drops into midfield and is a creative player. Those assists will give him alot of confidence.

TOT is not active for next two weeks. Currently they are out of form, but who knows what will happen till GW31. BA is the striker who scores against any team, when he is in form. He is out of form now, easy opponents could help him to get in the form, but it is risky to bring him in in this point. I have him for next two weeks, will see how he plays.

Silva-Walcott sounds great, I would even go for LIV for next 2 games.

    a) Bale

    b) Gerrard

    c) Young

    d) Walcott

Walcott is a bit hit and miss. Gerrard has a risk of injury. Young is a rotation risk. In the last 5 Bale has only had 1 assist. All have great fixtures though. Sorry... not much help 😉

I think Bale is the best Spurs cover you can get and with those fixtures, surely he'll regain form.

I'll say Gerrard for the other because Rooney covers Young and RVP covers Walcott and I'm assuming you have both.

It probably depends a bit on who any of your rivals have though and who you've got up front.

Is there something like "rest of the season"? You obviously mean if the stay fit, don't get rotated and have amazing form. That wont happen.

Personally I think the last 2-3 weeks might be vital for the Premier league itself and also our mini leagues. Eg, I would not want Gerrard for their last 2 games(CHEL/swans)

So Nani not travelling along with Jones and Anderson.
Anderson is injured as far as reports go whilst Jones just needs a bit of a rest I think.
Which camp is Nani in do we reckon?
Was there any report on what kept him out of the WBA game?

Ferguson said he missed out through bruising ... nice and vague.

I badly need some information on Nani though!

Some sort of bruised ankle I think it was. Didn't sound too serious to me I know that much. Jones sounds like rest I agree. Anderson is out for the season now. I reckon Nani will feature on Sunday, for how long though I don't know...

I'm so tempted to go without Rooney and get 2 of the United wingers in.

Am I the only person thinking that owning Rooney helps with the headache of owning Nani Young or Valencia and knowing they'll miss the odd game?

Man U play on Sunday but then don't play again until 8 days later, so really can't agree with the talk of Rooney being benched vs Wolves. They don't play midweek next week so it doesn't follow.

I'm probably going with Valencia, he's cheapest and IMO is well ahead of both of them on the right.

        +1

If fit(and in form) Val is a bargain. I mean he and Evra are nearly the same price!

I agree ... wish I had Rooney instead of Nani at the moment.

I think Rooney, Evans, Evra could be the way to go.

Sort of regretting my initial gut transfer of Young, would have liked to double up on our defence really....I dunno could still be better to double on our attack.

3 United players is vital though!!

Agree KC, Rooney won't be benched. Sir Alex has set him a target of 40 goals and I'm sure he would love for him to give Van Persie a run for his money for the Golden Boot, he'll play him every game.

Agree on the 3 united, just not that you need to double up at the back. I can see you lot shipping some to the point of midfield rotation being the lesser risk. Just a hunch...

          Rooney, Val, Evans for me.

      For when? Neither.

Yak - Good/bad fix all mixed up...?
Pog - ok, if you don't own Dempster. Time to sell the Ful assets are around the corner though...
      Saha - never, ever again
Welbeck - it's like kissing your sister. I'd rather smooch Salma Hayek. Or KK.
