Digest

The Digest – Gameweek Twenty Eight

The Digest finally brings the double gameweek to an end, as we analyse Liverpool’s captain fantastic, the Swans’ continued top-flight success and the recent loss in faith in the blue half of Manchester, as United start to capitalise on their favourable run of fixtures…

The Player

With his side struggling for a cutting edge for the majority of this season, Steve Gerrard, once again, provided the solution. The relentless energy of the Liverpool skipper has so often dragged the Reds through and last night it was his positional play and finishing ability that sliced through the Everton backline to hand Kenny Dalglish’s side a handsome victory. Twice linking with Luis Suarez, whilst capitalising on a scramble involving Martin Kelly for the first, Gerrard applied three ensured finishes to announce his return to the fore.

Fantasy managers will immediately take notice. Whilst it’s unlikely that Gerrard was a major part of double Gameweek plans, suddenly he will now be on the radar and considered for the heavyweight slot in midfield – perhaps recently vacated by City’s David Silva, with the likes of Ashley Young and Nani already pitching convincing auditions.

Gerrard’s fitness will be the main concern – having been restored to the side last night following a prolonged spell of absence, there will be question marks as to whether he’ll retain a start at QPR on Saturday. While it seems likely that Kenny Dalglish will pull out the stops to ensure his skipper is available, there is a doubt whether Gerrard can immediately sustain back-to-back starts, or indeed that his all-action game won’t break down again should he be stretched.

The Team

It’s difficult to deny Swansea the mantle as team of the season – or Brendan Rodgers as manager of the year. Their results and, in particular, the brand of football they practice, has been both refreshing and eye-opening. Claiming the majority possession share from title challengers Man City at the weekend was their latest achievement; the fact that is was capped by a late winner and a clean sheet speaks volumes for their progress. Rodgers has instilled a belief and confidence that has brought an end product to Swansea’s composed fluidity.

In Fantasy terms, Swansea remain a reliable source of budget potential. Michel Vorm is already the stuff of legend but, for those who are late to the party or shed the Dutchman with their wildcards, the back four presents viable alternatives, with loanee Steven Caulker emerging as a bonus magnet in recent weeks.

While Scott Sinclair provides a proven goal threat and spot-kicks from midfield, Gylfi Sigurdsson has a graceful creative streak, set-piece involvement and a potent cutting edge as the alternative. Danny Graham up front, continues to pitch himself as a secure and reliable third Fantasy striker.

Unlike other budget options, Swansea pack the ability to surprise – to produce results and profits far above expected levels. That can be crucial to a Fantasy manager when there’s a call to the bench due to injury and suspension of more expensive assets.

The Talking Point

We’ve discussed City’s decline as a Fantasy force previously, and, following the Liberty Stadium defeat, it’s now a topic that has gathered pace. Injuries and squad rotation have combined with dwindling away returns to create a doubt that has swept through Fantasy squads and seen the likes of Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero make way for more secure and, currently, more profitable assets. The trend seems likely to escalate as Wayne Rooney and his United team-mates continue to set a determined pace, leaving City struggling to track their progess. In Fantasy terms, there’s been a power shift and those yet to go with it will likely be on the verge of submission.

With both Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli offering a cheap, emergency route back to City’s attacking potential – the pressure on Silva and Aguero to supply in intensifying.

City’s home fixture with Chelsea looks to be hugely significant. Those still holding to Silva and Aguero are set to get starts from their men in this one – they will likely need convincing returns if they are to remain in place. The trip to Stoke that follows is hardly a tempting proposition and one that promises an upturn in fortune should Roberto Mancini’s men slip again next Wednesday evening.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It is a shame. He's such a quality player, and unlike Owen he wants to play football. I can see Tottenham being interested in him again if he doesn't go abroad to Italy or Germany.

Tiredness ruled out as the trip had only lasted 20 mins. Pictures from the tunnel shows an emergency pocket designed with a 90 degrees wall. The bus could have hit the curb and the the wall. Head on collision with a wall explains a lot 🙁

"England gave the world football. It gave the best legacy anyone could give. We gave them the game," said Richards. "Then, 50 years later, some guy came along and said, you're liars, and they actually stole it. It was called Fifa."

Richards, who is also a Football Association board member, was speaking in front of Fifa vice president Prince Ali Bin Hussein of Jordan and International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat.

He added: "Fifty years later, another gang came along called Uefa and stole a bit more."

Where is AP? Does he remember our discussion about the Che squad against Napoli? Guess what Di Matteo is starting the exact 11 I predicted. So zing mate 🙂

    Cech
    Ivan Luiz Terry Cashley
    Essien Ramires

Or maybe lamps behind, Mata behind Drogs, Ramires on the wing I am not quite sure about that but the first 11 are first 11. This 11 wouldn't received 3 goals in the first leg for sure. Andre u suck!

Anyone want to take the captaincy off Messi and put it on Ronaldo? He could easily score 6 or more.

    Hahahahaha......

we made that joke last night about Gomez

      That nearly backfired.

But with Real needing to come out and show something after Bayern and Barca and with Ronaldo unlikely to be happy being outdone by Messi and Gomez I fear for CSKA.

LOL I was shitting myself with Gomez scoring like that....... also totally pissed off that he did nothing for me in the first leg and I'd transferred him out for Cardozo.

        YES you read that right.

        Still, Ronaldo...

Higuain could. I have him as huge differential. On the other hand I made a huge mistake I went with RVP instead of Gomez but so be it

Phil Jones has flu, I see.

Isn't it astonishing how prone to flu footballers are? Most of us hardly ever have it in our lives. Especially when you consider that there's no flu outbreak right now.

Not a doctor, but handshaking, communal showers.... and gatherings with fans, exhaustion, weakened physical state for 8 hours after a game, carrying a knock, travel in confined spaces, a wee bit of stress for upsetting 80,000 fans...... maybe that's why. Whereas, I am a flu-less hermit who watches 90 matches a season and drinks plenty of fluids. Hmmmmm.

Been doing a dance with my rival for the past few months where I would claw my way to within about 20 points f him then he has a blinder and sets me back.

Was all ready to throw a few gambles into the mix (thinking ditch Bale, Silva or Ba, maybe get in Walcott, Valencia, Ade/Balo).

Bearing in mind I'm once again sitting 20 points off him should I play it safe or throw in some gambles?

I'd continue to select the best team for yourself and not get dragged in to any games... on that criterion I'd think Bale out for Walcott might be a good move, and Valencia in for Silva. Momentum shift.

I reckon getting rid of Bale might be one to regret tbh (contrary to my previous post). I think he;s ben crap in the middle but spurs have come in for a lot of stick for playing too narrow the past few games, wouldn;t be surprised to see him back out wide next game and backin the points.

Silva is doing my head in, so the more likely to go I reckon.

        Cheers for the advice

Quite high, I don't think he'll start in Europa and BBC rules him out ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17295990 ), he should be fit for Wolves though.

Haven't posted much this season as I've been having a mare. Yoyoing around the 100-200k ranking for weeks and getting incredibly frustrated.

Finally thought, f*ck it, and went for a 12pter to set me up for the run-in. I wrote off this GW.

    35pt net gain.

It all feels kinda surreal at the moment. I know I'm happy, but slightly confused as these things never pay off. Weird just adding to the weirdness of this season.

A lot of people played successful hits this past weekend mostly because the most likely candidates to be taken out didn't do anything (Richards, Aguero, Ba, etc) and the players most people brought in for a hit (Rooney, Miyachi, Suarez, etc) did.

I took an 8 point hit that paid off handsomely as well but definitely won't be making a habit of it!
