Dugout Discussion

Tuesday Dugout Discussion

With the rest of the footballing world tuning in to the occasion at the Nou Camp tonight, the Dugout Discussion opens with it’s eyes firmly fixed on the remaining fixture from double Gameweek 35. It’s not glamorous, it’s Aston Villa versus Bolton Wanderers in a relegation scrap. The team news is in…

Villa XI: Given, Hutton, Cuellar, Baker, Lichaj, Albrighton, Herd, Warnock, Nโ€™Zogbia, Heskey, Weimann.

Bolton XI: Bogdan, Steinsson, Wheater, Ream, Ricketts, Ryo, Reo-Coker, M Davies, Petrov, Eagles, Ngog.

Gabriel Agbonlahor misses out due to injury for Alex McCleish’s side, whilst David Ngog is recalled in place of Kevin Davies for the struggling visitors.

The Dugout Discussion is open and can be accessed right here, with Champions League chat still permitted.

If Bolton win their game in hand they could go level on points with Villa, it's too close to call, other than I think Wigan will get out of it, Villa will scrape over the line, which leaves Blackburn and QPR to go down.

Blackburn are as good as down. Wigan have done their annual 'turn into a decent PL team at the end of the season' routine again, think they'll get enough points from the Blackburn and Wolves games to stay up. QPR should beat Stoke at home, which could well be enough.

      Bolton and Blackburn I reckon.

If there were a couple of extra gameweeks left I'd say definitely yes. But I think the season will finish just intime for Villa luckily. There aren't many games left and 3 teams have to overtake Villa for it to happen. I doubt it will, especially with 2 of those teams playing each other.

I don't know how much credit can be given to RDM's tactics considering losing Cahill, then going 2-0 down and having a player sent off would not have been part of any "tactic" as such. A lot of improvisation was required here, mostly by the players and not the coach.

I personally think it was just one absolute hell of an effort from the team. The Ramires goal was completely against the run of play but a fantastic finish and the pivotal moment of the game. Once Chelsea clinged on to that scoreline until halftime I think, only then, RDM could have had any real significant tactical input. What was that then? Settle for this scoreline, two banks of 4 and backs to the wall defending for 45 mins. I'm not taking anything away from him, they did it fantastically well but what else could they do?

Anyway I can't give enough credit to the team. Torres' goal was such an amazing moment too. The hairs on my neck stood up, I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. Composed and classy finish. Well done Chelsea.

      agreed 100%

If you attack them you lose 5-0

So instead you defend defend defend and just 'hope' that it works

It only worked cos of a missed penalty and a wrongly disallowed offside goal.

Bottom line you need a lot of luck, Chelsea had it. Hand in hand with their huge effort it was enough.

RDM a tactical genius? No chance
