Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Holland

We continue the analysis of next month’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine by taking a look at another of the competition’s favourites. Having already run the rule over Denmark and Germany in Group B, we turn our attentions to the runners-up in the 2010 World Cup, Holland:

Bert Van Marwijk’s side get the ball rolling in Group B with a 5pm clash against rank outsiders Denmark on Saturday June 9. Following on from that is an eye-watering showdown with Germany, which takes place on Wednesday June 13 at 7.45pm, before they pit their wits against Portugal in their final group match on Sunday June 17 at 7.45pm.

This group has, arguably, more potential for goals than any other. Germany won all 10 of their qualifying matches, scoring 34 times in the process, and also thrashed the Dutch 3-0 in a friendly last November. Denmark may be the underdogs but demonstrated their capabilities by finishing above Portugal in the qualifying rounds, forcing Cristiano Ronaldo et al to defeat Bosnia Herzegovina in the play-offs to seal their progress.

The Road to Qualification

Van Marwijk’s men breezed through qualification with nine wins and one loss in their six-team group; the defeat, at second placed Sweden, occurred after Holland had already clinched top spot in the group. The Dutch racked up 37 goals, scoring more than two goals on five occasions – the highlight being an 11-0 home win over San Marino – and conceded just eight, with a total of six clean sheets accrued.

Most Appearances: Mathijsen & Van der Wiel (10), Huntelaar, Pieters & Kuyt (9)

Top Scorer: Huntelaar (12), Van Persie & Kuyt (6), Sneijder & Afellay (3)

Top Assists: Sniejder & Kuyt (6), Van der Wiel (3)

The Likely Lads

Gregory Van der Wiel is far from cheap in the McDonalds game. The right-back comes in at 7.0 and, with Germany and Portugal offering a strong attacking presence, many Fantasy managers will likely avoid the Dutch defence. Those afore-mentioned six clean sheets, in addition to a trio of assists, highlight Van der Wiel’s possible potential at both ends of the pitch, however, and with starts nailed-on and an ownership of 3.9%, he could be a decent differential.

Coming in at 9.5 in the McDonalds game, Wesley Sneijder has already received plenty interest, with 23% of Fantasy managers snapping up his services. Playing in the hole in Holland’s 4-2-3-1, Sneijder returned three goals and six assists in eight appearances over the qualifying campaign and, after a frustrating injury-plagued campaign with Inter, will be keen to steer his country to success. Aside from his obvious talents and likely set-pieces, Sneijder’s appeal is furthered by the fact that Dirk Kuyt and Arjen Robben – the other two near-certain starters in the attacking midfield three – have both been classified as forwards in the McDonalds game.

Injury prevented Arjen Robben from playing any part in the qualifying campaign but, back to full fitness, his contribution on the flank will play a pivotal part in Holland’s attacking forays. Priced at a reasonable 9.0, the Bayern Munich man could appeal to those Fantasy managers looking to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the lone forward role; a double in Holland’s 3-2 win at Wembley highlights his importance to the side, though Robben will need a morale boost after that crucial penalty miss in the Champions League Final against Chelsea.

Cheeky Punt

With only one forward role available in their favoured formation, it could well be a straightforward battle between Robin Van Persie and Jan-Klaas Huntelaar to lead the line. While Van Marwijk has recently insisted both could play together, it remains to be seen if that is the case if Holland have a fully fit squad to choose from. Certainly, Robben’s enforced absence afforded them the chance to do so doing qualification with the Arsenal skipper out wide but, with the Bayern man now fit and raring to go, his manager has a huge decision to make. Both players are priced at 11.0, though Huntelaar has the potential to be a huge differential, with just 4% ownership to Van Persie’s 32.7%. At this point, it’s difficult to snap up either player with full confidence; Huntelaar started and scored against Bayern Munich last night but Holland have three more friendlies still to follow, though, and by the time the tournament gets underway, we should have hopefully more than guesswork to go on.

Priced at just 7.5 in the McDonalds game, Dirk Kuyt is an intriguing prospect. While his domestic campaign with Liverpool has been disastrous, Kuyt provided as many assists as Sneijder and scored as many as Van Persie in qualifying – the fact he missed just one game indicates Van Marwijk’s faith in his abilities. The Liverpool man seems to be ahead of Huntelaar in the penalty pecking order – he scored from the spot in a friendly against Austria when the latter was still on the pitch, though it’s worth noting that Van Persie didn’t play any part in the match. With an ownership of just 4%, Kuyt could be one worth considering, with many Fantasy managers choosing to overlook him in favour of the bigger names amongst the Dutch squad. He underlined his potential by providing an assist in last night’s 3-2 defeat by Bayern Munich.

Mega long repost! Sorry for boring you! 🙂

    Sky Euro Team:

    Hart
    Pique Kadlec Mathijsen
Robben Ozil Zhirkov Mandzukic Polish Theo!(Blaszczykowski)
    Kherzakov Big Lebowski(c)

Five starters for game day 1, with Captain Lewandowski. One captain change allowed per day, so can change to Kerzakov during game for evening match, then Ronaldo in for Kherzakov on day 2 and keep the strikers/mids rolling depending on form!

    Mc D’s game

    Hart Lindy
    Pique Mathijsen Kadlec Olson.M Strinic
    Ozil Iniesta Mandzukic Polanski Elm
    Ronaldo Lewandowski Robben

My thinking England should get couple of cleanies, Hart a certain starter, same as for Pique. Might change Mathijsen for Italien in due course, not sure there.

Ozil nailed on German attacker as Gomez/Klose bit dodge there. Robben cheapest Dutch attacker, Iniesta nailed on Spanish though watch out for Llorente, Ronaldo well I reckon he’s up for it can’t see how you can not pick him? Bench all starters too!

    Quite happy at the mo!

He might not, but that's going to be a low scoring match and Gigi could get some points with saves. Also I am going to use the WC in GW3 so I picked buffon thinking in his other games. And finally if the greeks manage to get a clean sheet then I won't need Gigi in GW1

I have Sneijder and Robben as well, seem like the best bets. I've also taken a wee gamble in GW1 and gone with Chiellini. Hoping the Italians can keep it tight and that he might pick up some recovered balls points.

Lemsip is a waste of money. Buy a jar of honey and some lemon juice. 2 tea spoons of honey, a couple of squeezes of lemon juice, mixed with boiling water (and maybe sugar if you need to improve the taste) does wonders. If you take paracetamol as well, you essentially have something that is like lemsip only better and cheaper.

In 18 games for Ukraine he has scored 7 times. A good goal to game ratio. Shevchenko has a better one but you're not going to waste a striker spot on him.
He plays for Ukraine who are hosting the tournament therefore he has 3 games at home.

B for sure. Sneijder takes VDV's place in the dutch squad and if Kuyt gets played he could potentially score higher than Nani. I'd say b's the better choice.

You choose players by auction rather than the conventional way, so this means that a given player can only be owned by a single manager in each league. You have to join a league (there are codes for some open leagues knocking about on here) and then the league chairman sets the rules for when the online auction takes place. So initially you just need a team name and a league to join, your team is formed over the auction.

Does this look okay for the sky league?

    Lloris
    K. Papadopolous / Hubnik / Piszcek
    Iniesta / Ozil / Shirokov / Robben / Nasri
    Torres / Lewandowski

Can't decide on tactics for this league - you can change your captain once each day so it seems like having a spread from different nations is important. But then half my squad will be knocked out in the group stage!

You build a team in the auction. You make bids for 15 players at a time, and when the auction bid deadline passes it assesses the bids and awards players to the highest bidders.

There are currently 3 peeps in the latest league, need at least 5 before I can start it.

Below is my explanation of how it works.

"Bidding deadlines will be on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th. (possibly multiple on the 7th if necessary) Every deadline will be at 10pm GMT. 3 players allowed per country. Allowable formations are 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2 Enjoy"

    Tzorvas Given
Zhirkov K. Papadopoulos Debuchy M. Olsson Anyukov
    Sneijder Nasri Özil Yarmolenko Mandžukić
    Müller Jelavić Robben

Got 1.5m in bank. What to do with it? Happy with my defensive double differentials

Does anyone see any gains by keeping it to give me that upgrade option in gw2 if I choose not to wildcard?

        Demi wrote....I copied & pasted...

        1. Here’s my thoughts on the Starting 11s of some of the teams, based on research/knowledge

Portugal: Patricio; Pereira, Bruno Alves, Pepe, Coentrao; Veloso, Meireles, Moutinho; Nani, Ronaldo & Postiga / Almeida

*(If Veloso doesn’t play, it would probably be Meireles moving to CDM and Martins drafted in. Rolando won’t be anywhere near the defence, so ignore him.

Ukraine: Pyatov; Mykhylic Kucher Shevchuk Rakitskiy; Yarmolenko Tymoshchuk Aliyev (Nazarenko) Rotan; Shevchenko Milevskiy

*Shevchenko will start as long as he shakes off the small injury he has.
France: Lloris; Debuchy, Rami, Mexes, Evra; M’Vila, Cabaye, Nasri; Valbuena/Menez/Malouda, Ribery, Benzema 4-2-3-1

Germany: Neuer – Boateng, Hummels (Mertesacker), Badstuber, Lahm – Schweinsteiger, Khedira – Muller, Özil, Podolski – Klose/Gomez

        * Kroos may rotate with Khedira, Gotze coming off the bench for Ozil. Expect neither to be starters.

Spain: Casillas, Arbeloa, Piqué, Ramos, Jordi Alba; Alonso, Busquets, Xavi; Iniesta, Silva & Llorente*

*Talk that Villa could be fit now though, so he would then be a starter. Soldado, Fabregas, Mata, Cazorla, Pedro, Torres all less assured of starts.

Italy: Buffon; Criscito, Chiellini (Bonucci if Chiellini is injured), Barzagli, Maggio; De Rossi, Pirlo, Marchisio (Motta in the mix for the midfield spot too); Cassano, any 2 of: Giovinco/Balotelli/DiNatale

Holland: Stekelenburg; Vd Wiel, Heitinga, Mathijsen, Emanuelson; Van bommel, De Jong; Sneijder, Kuyt, Robben; Huntelaar/RVP

*Put Kuyt in there as he seems a bit of a favourite of Van Marwijk and is on pens. If he doesn’t start though, then it could be RVP as a LWF with Huntelaar leading the line.
*VDV/Affelay competing too but less assured of starts. Huntelaar plays better for the dutch than RVP, so wouldnt be surprised to see him chosen. They’ve both had amazing seasons.
*They may play RVP as the main striker, which would mean no place for Huntelaar, and Kuyt probably starting. Personally, given the tough group they’re in, and RVP/Huntelaar sharing minutes on the pitch sometimes, i don’t think it’s worth getting either especially at that price. Maybe it’s ok just for the 1st game though.

Poland XI: Szczesny; Piszczek – Wasilewski – Perquis – Wawrzyniak; Dudka (Polanski) – Murawski (Polanski) ; Blaszczykowski (Kuba) – Obraniak (Mierzejewski) – Rybus; Lewandowski

*Wasilewski’s naturally a RB but will partner Perquis at CB for the Euros. Perquis currently has an injury and it’s doubtful whether he’ll be fit enough in time. If he isn’t then Jodlewic (4m) will start @ CB. Brackets are the ones that also deputise in that position, and may play.

Czech Republic: Cech; Gebreselassie, Hubnik, Sivok, Kadlec; Plasil, Jiracek; Rezek, Rosicky, Pilar; Baros – Pretty confident of this lineup.

Denmark XI: Sorensen; Zimling, Kjaer, Agger, Boilesen/M.Poulsen/Silberbauer; Jacobsen, Kvist, Eriksen; Krohn- Dehli, Rommedhal & Bendtner

Russia XI: Akinfeev; Anyukov, Zhirkov, Ignashevich, Berezutsky; Denisov, Shirokov Izmailov; Arshavin, Dzagoev, Kerzhakov

*Arshavin is the captain so is the most nailed on of the front 3. Kerzhakov, Pav and Pogrebnyak are competing for the same spot. I think it will be Kerzhakov who starts though. Wouldn’t get either Pav or Pog.

Greece XI: Found this helpful little blog, which talks of all the players in the squad and from it you can glean who’s likely to start or not:- http://greece.worldcupblog.org.....-pick.html

Those are all the common teams i’ve managed to do. Haven’t got a clue what England’s will be so left us out. Hope it helps somewhat.
