Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Holland

We continue the analysis of next month’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine by taking a look at another of the competition’s favourites. Having already run the rule over Denmark and Germany in Group B, we turn our attentions to the runners-up in the 2010 World Cup, Holland:

Bert Van Marwijk’s side get the ball rolling in Group B with a 5pm clash against rank outsiders Denmark on Saturday June 9. Following on from that is an eye-watering showdown with Germany, which takes place on Wednesday June 13 at 7.45pm, before they pit their wits against Portugal in their final group match on Sunday June 17 at 7.45pm.

This group has, arguably, more potential for goals than any other. Germany won all 10 of their qualifying matches, scoring 34 times in the process, and also thrashed the Dutch 3-0 in a friendly last November. Denmark may be the underdogs but demonstrated their capabilities by finishing above Portugal in the qualifying rounds, forcing Cristiano Ronaldo et al to defeat Bosnia Herzegovina in the play-offs to seal their progress.

The Road to Qualification

Van Marwijk’s men breezed through qualification with nine wins and one loss in their six-team group; the defeat, at second placed Sweden, occurred after Holland had already clinched top spot in the group. The Dutch racked up 37 goals, scoring more than two goals on five occasions – the highlight being an 11-0 home win over San Marino – and conceded just eight, with a total of six clean sheets accrued.

Most Appearances: Mathijsen & Van der Wiel (10), Huntelaar, Pieters & Kuyt (9)

Top Scorer: Huntelaar (12), Van Persie & Kuyt (6), Sneijder & Afellay (3)

Top Assists: Sniejder & Kuyt (6), Van der Wiel (3)

The Likely Lads

Gregory Van der Wiel is far from cheap in the McDonalds game. The right-back comes in at 7.0 and, with Germany and Portugal offering a strong attacking presence, many Fantasy managers will likely avoid the Dutch defence. Those afore-mentioned six clean sheets, in addition to a trio of assists, highlight Van der Wiel’s possible potential at both ends of the pitch, however, and with starts nailed-on and an ownership of 3.9%, he could be a decent differential.

Coming in at 9.5 in the McDonalds game, Wesley Sneijder has already received plenty interest, with 23% of Fantasy managers snapping up his services. Playing in the hole in Holland’s 4-2-3-1, Sneijder returned three goals and six assists in eight appearances over the qualifying campaign and, after a frustrating injury-plagued campaign with Inter, will be keen to steer his country to success. Aside from his obvious talents and likely set-pieces, Sneijder’s appeal is furthered by the fact that Dirk Kuyt and Arjen Robben – the other two near-certain starters in the attacking midfield three – have both been classified as forwards in the McDonalds game.

Injury prevented Arjen Robben from playing any part in the qualifying campaign but, back to full fitness, his contribution on the flank will play a pivotal part in Holland’s attacking forays. Priced at a reasonable 9.0, the Bayern Munich man could appeal to those Fantasy managers looking to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the lone forward role; a double in Holland’s 3-2 win at Wembley highlights his importance to the side, though Robben will need a morale boost after that crucial penalty miss in the Champions League Final against Chelsea.

Cheeky Punt

With only one forward role available in their favoured formation, it could well be a straightforward battle between Robin Van Persie and Jan-Klaas Huntelaar to lead the line. While Van Marwijk has recently insisted both could play together, it remains to be seen if that is the case if Holland have a fully fit squad to choose from. Certainly, Robben’s enforced absence afforded them the chance to do so doing qualification with the Arsenal skipper out wide but, with the Bayern man now fit and raring to go, his manager has a huge decision to make. Both players are priced at 11.0, though Huntelaar has the potential to be a huge differential, with just 4% ownership to Van Persie’s 32.7%. At this point, it’s difficult to snap up either player with full confidence; Huntelaar started and scored against Bayern Munich last night but Holland have three more friendlies still to follow, though, and by the time the tournament gets underway, we should have hopefully more than guesswork to go on.

Priced at just 7.5 in the McDonalds game, Dirk Kuyt is an intriguing prospect. While his domestic campaign with Liverpool has been disastrous, Kuyt provided as many assists as Sneijder and scored as many as Van Persie in qualifying – the fact he missed just one game indicates Van Marwijk’s faith in his abilities. The Liverpool man seems to be ahead of Huntelaar in the penalty pecking order – he scored from the spot in a friendly against Austria when the latter was still on the pitch, though it’s worth noting that Van Persie didn’t play any part in the match. With an ownership of just 4%, Kuyt could be one worth considering, with many Fantasy managers choosing to overlook him in favour of the bigger names amongst the Dutch squad. He underlined his potential by providing an assist in last night’s 3-2 defeat by Bayern Munich.

Alreet. I wouldn't get too excited. This guy will be no more than back up. I would be suprised if he even makes the bench to begin with. He's quite young, and (almost) free. Just the kind of signing that we like. If he is a replacement for anybody, it would be guthrie. But I would say we will still buy a more defensive midfielder if guthries goes, as he would often fill in for tiote.

He is an offensive midfielder (play on the wing I guess) I don't know much about him because he played in 2nd division so.. I saw him play in the french club against ligue 1 club and he clearly was the best player of his team.
For me That's a great signing (again) for the magpies , free and lot of potential.

I keep finding flaws in any squad I build. Latest is:

    Szczesny

    Hubnik Boulahrouz K. Papadopoulos

    Sneijder Rosicky Ozil Xavi

    Jelavic Lewandowski Muller

Subs: Given // M'Vila Evra Lustig

Expecting: Poland, Holland and France to get a clean sheet. I think France is underrated for this tournament, although they had positive results against Germany, England and Brazil. Or maybe I just believe in M'Vila and England messing up as always.

Defense is shaky, I expect Boulahrouz to bring me points. and Evra + Lustig could replace the other two.

    Suggestions?

Nice team. I wouldn't get Boulahrouz even for GW 1. I expect the Dutch to concede.

Agree with your assessment of France though. Easy-ish group, and even if they don't win, they should be good for racking up goals and clean sheets in the group stages.

Not a fan of Rosicky and goal-shy Czech Republic. Prefer Yarmolenko or Mandzukic. M'Vila is also a bit of a meh pick. If you fancy France, get Nasri or Benzema.

Lustig is probably a bad investment considering Olsson's cheaper, but I'd just avoid Sweden defensively anyways.

Decent attack, but nothing too special, could lack that bit of explosiveness which you'd want from a captains pick though.

        Thank you Camzy!

        Now it's:

        Szczesny// Given

Hubnik Evra Criscito K Papadopoulus Barzagli

        Ninis Shirokov Ozil Xavi Sneijder

        Jelavic Muller Lewandowski

        Which two 9.5 should I pick: Xavi/Sneijder/Iniesta/Ribery ?
Also to get Benzema thinking maybe I should give up Lewandowski (8) and go with Kuba (7.5) + a 9.0 (Robben) instead of a 9.5 Mid

Do you think I might be overstacking with 2 Italians on defense, should I get a cheaper guy and use the money?

I'm feeling like Lewandowski is more selfish though whereas Benzema will pass if someone is open rather than shooting straight up. Not sure about this switch. What do you think?

Do QPR have to keep paying Barton while he is suspended? I really hope not.

I would have loved it LOVED IT if QPR had got relegated due to Barton's actions, so he could have been sacked (there was a clause in his contract saying the contract could be terminated by either party in the event of relegation), and would have started the season with a 12 match ban and no club!! Nothing against QPR, I just can't stand Barton. I guess one of the crappy teams might have taken a risk on him for 20 grand or something like that, but he would definitely not have been able to find anyone stupid enough to pay his stupid wages again!

    Pischzek / Papadopoulos / Kadlec / Strinic / Debuchy
    Ozil / Snejder / Shirokov / Yarmolenko / Mandzukic
    Robben / Zlatan / Lewandowski

I would say that a standard ffs team is the way to go in this game, as nobody really has full knowledge of all of the different teams. We are all putting teams together based on little titbits of knowledge collected from various sources, so its understandable that a standard team is emerging.

Very similar to my current draft. Though I've got hunterlaar rather than Robben. I reckon he will play, and as you plan to get rid of your dutch forward after the first game you would only be risking it for one game. Your goalie combination is a lot more expensive than most on here. What is your thinking there?

What's the story with M'Villa(5.5m) from France?

    According to Wikipedia:

M'Vila's passing ability and ability to retain possession consistently has been described as "precise" and "imaginative", respectively.

In the 2010–11 season, M'Vila led the league in passes attempted (2341) and passes completed (1989) finishing the campaign with a passing percentage of 84 percent. He also finished third behind attacking midfielders Yohan Cabaye and Morgan Amalfitano in balls played. Despite his position, M'Vila is also known for his disciplined style of play. So far in his career as a professional, in which he has accumulated over 120 appearances, M'Vila has collected only 16 yellow cards and suffered only one expulsion

Despite the positive opinions, M'Vila has endured criticism, most notably from Rennes' former manager Guy Lacombe, who viewed the player as a "loose cannon"

    Talk to me.

yes, it is more likely and even if it is not, captains are chosen for their big points potential. It would be silly to captain a defender when you have Lewandowski playing, who you brought in the team for the reason that he may score big

      Jelavic may not start.

Portugal defenders are risky. Actually, any defenders from that group are huge risks in the group stages, imo, as there don't look like there will be many clean sheets.

You'd be better off getting Alba instead of Coentrao as he has more cleanie opportunities and is a lock to get through to the knockout phase.

I'm not convinced Ronaldo is worth over a tenth of your total budget either.

Doubling up on Italian defence? No problem with that. Maybe Criscito(6m) to save 500k?

I don't like to have 3 players playing on day 4. It means you are stuck with their points if you decide to play them.

Better options than Kadlec/Coentrao/Kjaer methinks. No Poles?

Not sure about Poles. Reckon they'll do well as hosts, but hard to pick the right talent. Szczes might make his way into my team if it seems Sifakis is doubtful.

Kjaer is a class defender. Bit of a punt.

    Cheers guys.

Yeah, captain options. I haven't scheduled my wc, it's there for my hour of darkness...

Ronaldo is a very good footballer. And he's playing better than ever. Obviously everything for Portugal will go through him. And while they have strong opposition none of their opponents are particularly defensive.

Coentrao is great ff fodder. Nailed on, and phenomenal going forward. Has everyone forgotten that Portugal had on of the most successful defences in the World Cup?

I prefer Tymoshchuk to Yarmolenko. And he's cheaper. Scores plenty of goals and he's the lynchpin of the Ukrainian side.

Let me quote you "And while they have strong opposition none of their opponents are particularly defensive" which implies that the other teams are all heavily reliant on attacking and then you have this "Has everyone forgotten that Portugal had on of the most successful defences in the World Cup?" Does it even matter now, with Portugal facing such attacking teams, clean sheet will be extremely hard to come by.

Never turn to a defender in search of just attacking potential...It's way too risky.

You really need to decide when you will play your wc, cause that should be the crux of how you pick your team.

Not really. Major tournaments are even more unpredictable than the normal league season. Remember Denmark? I have a team for one ff format with only Czech, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian and Croat players. Sounds crazy, but look at the history of the Euros, geography plays a big part.

Some teams and players will beat the form book and hit a streak of five or six games.

Others will flop unexpectedly. When that happens I want my wc in reserve so I can slap it on the table and capitalise on the opportunity.

Of course you should turn to defenders for attacking potential. If you can get 8, 9, 10 attacking players, the more the merrier. So, Portugal and specifically Coentrao has potential at both ends.

But this format also means that if Ozil and Sneijder flop I have my bets hedged with Kjaer and Coentrao ready to pick up defensive points.

The sub system and unpredictability mean class, form and value are more relevant than fixtures.

Pick good players playing in big games against each other and you're likely to pick up some points somewhere, then sub out the underperformers.

I agree on the unpredictability in the Euros, but i their are plenty of points offered in defense over the course of this tournament. I really like Coentrao ever since the wc but I still see limited potential in defense.

My advice would still be - Go with Ronaldo if you so desire but take someone in defense over Coentrao who has potential at both ends. Certainly avoid Group B players in defense.

Anyways I am pretty sure there be plenty of chances in the next 14-15 days in your team.

Would be nice to have Ronaldo in gw 2. Possibly get rid of some of my Croats. What I'm saying is I will prob play the fixtures and WC early instead of holding back to Wc in gw 3 with the possible fear that players will be rotated.

I wouldn't know who the coaches would bring in anyway. Last thing i want is wasting a WC.

So we make a team for gw1, and then wc immediately. Sounds good to me.

Teddy suggested he is playing the big players irrespective of their opponents but I guess you are gonna play the fixtures. I too am more keen to play the fixtures.

fancy a few draws in first round so leans towards 2. If many of the big teams win ie spain then with an easier game in gw2 u can easily expect the squad players for gw3

After all matches on a single day have finished and before the next matches start, you can:

Replace any player who wasn't sent off, with one from your bench whose team is yet to play.
Change your captain if he wasn't sent off, with a player from your squad whose team is yet to play.

Players who are substituted out will score 0 points, the captain bonus will be lost from your original captain if a new captain is selected. Substitutions and captain changes can't be cancelled once confirmed.

An unlimited number of manager substitutions can be made, however, it is not possible to make manager substitutions after games on the last day of the Matchday, as all fixtures will have been completed.
