Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Euro 2012 – Matchday 1

Robert Lewandowski gets Euro 2012 underway by netting the opener against Greece but Wojciech Szczesny spoils the home celebrations by picking up a straight red card. Russia tear the Czech Republic apart, with Alan Dzagoev the star performer as Dick Advocaat’s side show just why they are the Group A favourites…

Poland 1 Greece 1
Two red cards, a couple of dodgy goalkeepers and the runaway winner of the Captain Poll netting the first goal of the tournament – yesterday’s opener had a bit of everything for Fantasy managers. The Poles lined up as expected, with Damien Perquis shaking off any doubts over an elbow problem to take his place at centre-half for the co-hosts. Poland looked menacing from the off – Robert Lewandowski managed more shots than any other player and Ludovic Obraniak’s set-piece duties seeing him create five goalscoring opportunities for his team mates.

Jakub Blaszczykowski provided the assist for the opener, crossing from the right for Lewandowski to nod home just after the quarter-hour mark but, despite having the majority of attempts on goal, the Poles failed to add to their score. Wojciech Szczesny’s dismissal means he will now miss the next game against Russia and is hugely frustrating for his Fantasy owners – he is stuck on -2 points and is unable to be subbed out of our lineups for this round. Replacement keeper Przemyslaw Tyton is now up for consideration – priced at 4.0 in the McDonald’s game, his penalty save harvested a six point return in comparison.

One game in and Greece already have a defensive crisis brewing. Fernando Santos lost both his first-choice centre-halves inside the first 45 minutes – Sokratis Papastathopoulos received his marching orders after picking up a couple of innocuous bookings and will now miss the game with Czech Republic on Tuesday. He currently sits on -2 points and, similar to Szczesny, cannot be replaced this round. Avraam Papadopoulos limped out of the proceedings early on and has been ruled out of the tournament with knee ligament damage. Kyriakos Papadopoulos is now handed a chance in the heart of defence – the Schalke man’s 17.2% of owners in the McDonald’s game will be relieved, after he was omitted from yesterday’s starting XI.

Dimitrios Salpingidis could well oust Sotiris Ninis from the Greek first-team after an eye-catching second half display. On as a sub for Ninis, he grabbed the equaliser before being felled in the box by Szczesny – after Greece missed two spot-kicks in the previous friendly with Armenia, reports suggest Giorgos Karagounis stepped up as a last resort, with no other player willing to take responsibility. The Greek captain subsequently missed, leaving the match all square.

Russia 4 Czech Republic 1
Dick Advocaat’s side produced a superb attacking display in the evening kick-off to confirm their status as Group A favourites. Playing on the right of the Russia front three, Alan Dzagoev dazzled throughout and bagged a brace to pick up a 13 point return in the McDonald’s game. Classified as a midfielder and priced at 7.5, many had preferred Roman Shirokov due to the latter’s cheaper cost of 6.0 – Dzagoev had just 6.6% ownership prior to last night’s game but this is surely set to rise now. Shirokov still proved his worth, though, netting his side’s second, while Andrei Arshavin looked back to his best on the left of the front three – he created as many as seven goalscoring opportunities and was rewarded with a couple of assists.

The margin of victory was flattering only on the Czechs – Aleksandr Kerzhakov had seven efforts and failed to manage a single attempt on target before being subbed off. His replacement, Roman Pavlyuchenko, had an instant impact; despite being handed 16 minutes game time, the former Spurs man still managed a goal and assist contribution, giving Kerzhakov’s Fantasy owners plenty to fret about ahead of Tuesday’s match with Poland.

The Czechs rolled out their expected first XI, with Michal Kadlec at left-back again after starting their last friendly game against Hungary in the heart of the back-four. Two down at half-time, Bilek withdrew Jan Rezek and brought on Tomas Hubschman – this offered brief hope, as a superb Jaroslav Plasil through ball allowed Vaclav Pilar to reduce the deficit to just one before Pavlyuchenko’s introduction swung the game firmly in Russia’s favour.

Plasil was a strong creative presence throughout and, similar to Arshavin, provided seven goalscoring opportunities, though picked up just a single assist for his endeavours. For Michal Bilek, there’s no hiding from the fact that his team were second best by some distance last night – the only consolation is that the other two teams in the group look far less likely to cause the same problems as Russia. With a group stage wildcard available in the McDonald’s game, Fantasy owners of Petr Cech and Tomas Rosicky could see a drop in the pair’s prices; the duo have 35% and 17% ownership respectively and are more susceptible than most if managers choose to ship out their Czech assets on the back of last night’s performance.

Posted this last night and nobody has yet convinced me to change Capt from Shirokov to RVP. Feel welcome to try. 'It's more fun' won't work btw 🙂

Before you decide to stick or twist, try doing a little maths rather just a gut instinct. For example…

You have Shirokov and wonder whether to get RVP instead.

Let’s say RVP get two goals

    Shrokov capt 8×2 = 16 + 10 for RVP = 26
    RVP capt 10x2 + 8 for Shirokov = 28

So even if RVP scores twice you only gain 2pts, if he gets booked as he often does you gain nothing. So really you are gambling that RVP will get a min of two goals and doesn’t get booked.

    Think I’ll stick 😉

You should stick - most people on here however had Lew as Capn so switch to RVP doesn't have much downside as chances are RVP will at least equal Lew'a one goal

If UCL fantasy taught me anything it's 'always switch captaincy to Messi, no matter how well your other players did'

Now which player at the Euros is going to be my Messi substitute? 😉
I don't think Ronaldo counts as Portugal are a bit shite.

But I think you're sensible enough not gambling on 2+ goals, what would your other captain choices be? If they're midfielders with a chance of two goals then it could be worth it

However, if RVP scores a brace and gets an assist?

Besides which, if RVP. fails you still have captain choices tomorrow and Monday.

8 points really isn't that great a captains score to be honest with you so I am twisting. Considering Szecesney has already messed up my score it makes no difference to me now.

But then you'll have another chance to change your captain on day 3, so even if you captain RVP and he does poorly, you could always change your captain the next day. On the other hand, if you don't switch your captain and RVP goes crazy, you're buggered.

Most people have Sneijder/RVP, a decent Croat, and Ibra. You'd be pretty unlucky for all of them to get fewer than 6/7 points, so it isn't much of a gamble in my opinion. In FPL it's all about not losing ground with awful weeks and working your way up slowly, but there's only 6 gameweeks in this game so if you want to do well you're gonna have to make a few gambles.

I captained Dzagoev (who was 2 RB away from essentially getting 2 BP) anyway so I don't really care that much! 😀

Is a close one, if I'd had it on I wouldn't be sure what to do but its not just 2 goals that could equal/better his score.

To equal or better it RVP could get:
      2 assists + 60+mins = 8x2 = 16
      1 goal 1 assist + 60+mins = 9x2 = 18
      2 goals + 60+mins = 12x2 = 24

And that's not taking into account any recovered ball points. I'd be tempted to twist especially if you have good GW captain options for the next two days fixtures or even just one.

There is a tiny error in your calculations:

RVP get two goals and gets booked

      Shrokov capt 8×2 = 16 + 9 for RVP = 25
      RVP capt 9×2 + 8 for Shirokov = 26

So if RVP scores twice and gets booked you gain in fact 1pt, if that makes any difference to your decision.

Re: Klose versus Gomez - 'kicker' speaks of "serious considerations" within the German coaching team that Gomez should start tonight after all. The logic is that Klose hasn't fully got back to full fitness, whereas Gomez has a record of causing Pepe problems in the two Champions League semi-final matches. The magazine also suggests that the remaining ten places in the team would be as predicted.

Neuer - Boateng, Mertesacker, Badstuber, Lahm - Khedira, Schweinsteiger - T. Müller, Özil, Podolski - Gomez/Klose

Reading between the lines, 'kicker' aren't certain about the choice of striker either, but they have a reputation for being a very cautious magazine and would hardly run a story like this unless they had very good. No other reputable sources have commented on this as yet.

I settled for Özil as my only German cover, just to play wait and see with Klose/Gomez, though I think Klose should start due to his record and the fact this'll probably be his last major tournament

I still think Mertesacker over Hummels is a bit of a mistake, even if Löw does prefer his style of play, Mertesacker's a bit one paced, and Portugal do have that quick winger who likes to cut inside playing tonight, not sure many people have heard of him 😛

        @Paddym25:

The gamechanger would be going Afellay as captain as he has been picked by far less players. But RvP is the safer bet. I have the same dilemma myself, but atleast we can see the line ups before we have to decide. i.e. Affelay is a slight doubt to start.

        My question is:

When will player prices start changing? Once people make transfers, or after the end of matchday 1? Also, how are these price changes calculated? Like 0.1M for every 10,000 people? Anyone know?

nah, I was never going to change keepers. Chesney was always the best option for the week.

look at the RUS situation. no guarantees anywhere.

and it doesn't make one jot of difference who my second choice was, no subbing the red card boys.......

I would stick with 8 personally.

Sneijder/Ozil would have to score, and get a clean sheet to match that.
RvP would need to score and get an assist to beat it.

But also, this is early in the match day, so you (presumably) will have two more captain options for Sunday+Monday matches.

I'd say 5 is a twist, 6 + 7 is a twist after 1 or 2 matches (depending on your last two captain options), but 8 is a stick, even after just 1 day out of 4.

    Hi all.
After the first two games my backs have been a bit of a disappointment (I have Piszczek and Zhirkov)
It look's like a strong wind could knock Poland's centre-backs over and Zhirkok, well, I expected him to play more on the offense. (Arshavin stole the show on his wing) I see it difficult for both teams to get clean sheets. Piszczek played good enough but that defence is a mess.

Any advice would be most welcome!

Made the right choice imo, I'm changing from Lewadowski to RVP tonight then got Ibra if RVP doesn't pay off. Only downside is no great choice for group C, could always (C) Alba I guess if RVP doesn't perform.
