Scout Report – Oscar

Chelsea continued to splash the cash with wild abandon earlier this week, after the club confirmed on Wednesday they have signed the highly-rated Brazilian Oscar on a five-year contract. The 20-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £25m and is the fifth attacking midfielder to join the club since the end of last season, following the acquisitions of Eden and Thorgan Hazard, Marko Marin and Kevin De Bruyne.

The transfer comes as little surprise, bearing in mind the midfielder revealed days ago he had already undergone a medical for the Champions League winners. While Roberto Di Matteo lavished praise upon the youngster, the Blues boss also indicated the new signings may need time to gel within the Chelsea system in the season ahead:

He is a fantastic player, one of the youngest to push through to the Brazilian national team and he will be a fantastic signing for us. Oscar is a very exciting young talent, a creative midfield player who scores goals. He will add a lot of options and solutions for us in midfield. It will be a challenge to make sure we have the right balance within the team so we will have to see how we fit the team together with all the players.

The Statistics

Oscar’s career began in the Sao Paulo youth system in his native country before he made his first-team debut for the club at the age of 17. His only season there harvested 11 league appearances and a trio of assists before he moved on to Internacional in December 2010. The attacking midfielder made just five appearances over the remainder of his first season at his new club but the 2011/12 campaign saw Oscar produce the type of attacking returns that made him such a highly sought-after talent. Over the course of 26 league appearances, he returned 10 goals and seven assists and helped steer his side to the local state championship. He also turned out five times for the club this season before joining up with his country for Olympic duty.

On the international stage, Oscar featured for Brazil at every level from Under 15 – Under 20 before stepping up to the senior side last year. He has turned out for Brazil on six occasions and netted on his last appearance against Argentina, though his most memorable moment for his country so far has been a hat-trick against Portugal in the semi-finals of the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.

The Prospects

There is no doubt that the Chelsea midfield has both the potential to delight and furiously frustrate Fantasy managers in equal measure next season. Certainly, the 4-2-3-1 shape looks established now and while loan moves for both De Bruyne and Thorgan Hazard have been mooted, the number of options still available to Di Matteo means midfield rotation could bite hard.

Much may depend on how much Di Matteo cedes to the wishes of Roman Abramovich in handing all the marquee names simultaneous starting roles. Considering Eden Hazard was purchased before Di Matteo even penned a full-time contract, it’s fairly apparent that the Russian owner is now intent on seeing his side dazzle – as opposed to grind – their way to silverware. An attacking trident of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar, interchanging positions and wreaking havoc behind Fernando Torres is perhaps the ultimate scenario, though with Marko Marin, Florent Malouda, Daniel Sturridge, Yossi Benayoun and possibly Ramires in the mix for the offensive midfield slots, certainty of game time looks an unlikely ally for the vast majority.

Di Matteo has already hinted that Mata is likely to be afforded time off at the start of the season due to back-to-back Euro 2012 and Olympic involvement with Spain – it’s not yet clear whether Oscar will feature in his immediate plans, though bearing in mind that he could feature for Brazil for up to a week before the domestic campaign kicks off on Saturday August 18, the youngster is likely to be gradually introduced to the Stamford Bridge set-up,.

Priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Oscar is far from cheap and looks no more than a punt initially, with Hazard, Marin and Frank Lampard the likely candidates for a double Gameweek 1 which sees the Blues travel to Wigan before hosting Reading. Intriguingly, Oscar comes in at a mere 5.8 in the Sky Sports game – far cheaper than both Mata (8.9) and Hazard (7.7) – and with Chelsea welcoming (NEW, STO, NOR) to the Bridge by the end of Gameweek 7, there’s little doubt their fixtures are enticing. By then, hopefully, there will be a little more clarity over Di Matteo’s selection policy but there would be no surprise if rotation continues to curtail our best-laid plans over the course of the upcoming season and reduce the Blues midfield to a Fantasy manager’s nightmare.

I would have to say Bale, but I wouldn't discount Sig completely. If he locks down pens+set pieces and he translates away form into home form, I don't see why he wouldn't be close.

The only reason I choose Bale over Siggy is because Siggy will be competing with VDV. If they both had max minutes, it would be an extremely close call. Siggy will score some screamers this season for sure.

Why are they competing. Look at the Tottenham squad. When Modric leaves both VDV and Siggy will have to play with Siggy getting the AMC position.

At 4.0 no. But Norwich and West Ham have poor defences and Southampton tough fixtures.

IMO you should save some money elsewhere and upgrade to 4.5's where there are lots of better options (Cuellar, Figueroa, Hughes, Wilson, Fabio etc.)

In my opinion though I would
      1) Lose GIVEN - think Villa will be less defensive with Lambert
      Defense is ok
      2) Lose Modric downgrade Nolan to Noble. Better options than Allen unless he moves to Pool
      3) Will Tevez play will Ba play as a striker

I don't like your strikers. Tevez may well not start and Ba's form dropped off at the end of last season.

I don't like modric and allen as fantasy footballers. They play too deep.

You cold get one or two 4.0m defenders to free up some cash to get better players than modric and allen.

Yeah looking good, fairly standard but with a few flair picks. You're obviously not too worried about Rooney so good on you, go for it!

I like the Nolan pick over Noble, although people will tell you to change it. Likewise Ben Arfa.

I don't get the Pog love. Yes, he is only 5m and has a DGW first up, but then he has tough fixtures. If you need to get rid of him for say Holt/Graham/Lambert then you are 1mill min short. No straight swap.

      I would downgrade Vorm maybe?Or Nolan/Barfa?

Tangtastic - from prev page (sorry if you read and ignored for good reason!)

Hey Tangtastic – I’ve been weighing up Tevez a bit. I’m thinking even if he quadrupled his minutes – and played them in a similar vein of form – he’d still finish the season a good 40 pts behind his Argentine brethren. All total projection and bluster but I’d say the price difference is about right – and that Aguero is worth the difference.

But then you have to factor in what you do with the extra 2 mil! And that’s where my brain gives up…

Aguero outscoring Tevez over the season, probably. Aguero will simply get more game time and patience. That said, I'm pretty sure that Tevez will at least start the season in the first XI. All things being equal though, I wonder if the difference between them is that big. Tevez does seem to play further forward than Aguero, not just today but last season too. I think Tevez has more assists in him too.

I think you've hit the nail on the head for me with the 'extra £' comment; its actually £2.5m. With that extra money I can upgrade Pog to Adebayor in time for gw3, giving me - Tevez, Torres, Adebayor.

I am gambling a bit, but if it comes off that front 3 looks good to me.

Yeah - for sure. All about what you do with the difference. The assist points diff is very true - but if he keeps assisting a player your rivals have captained (for example!) it's looking less cool!

I suppose that's true. But on the other hand we are talking about the most picked player in the game. So it's a big call.

Tevez definitely plays deeper than Aguero. Tevez usually plays just behind aguero and drops into midfield at times and links the defence to attack. He should get many more assists than aguero.

Balotelli is ultimately pretty unreliable as a player. Tevez, as long as he makes it to the pitch, is surprisingly professional.

Also, Tevez leads that attack better than either Aguero or Ballotelli imo; no one carrys the ball forward as he does and he creates more for others than those two as well.

I'm pretty sold on him being a starter (speak to Tangtastic) at least to begin with. Trying to work out whether Tevez + 2.5M brings me more points than Aguero. Depends on where I spend it of course - but also that Aguero is a screaming captaincy choice - where Tevez is more of a shadowy nod from the corner of the dressing room.

Is that a typo Tosey? Should it be Terry instead of Kompany?

Obviously. I kind of hope he leaves. At Fulham I want him and it buggers up my midfield.

Hoilett may be a great addition to the QPR line up,
May even tempt FPL teams once a proven starter

Hey I am a newbie. Would like some honest opinion about my team

    De Gea, Ruddy
    Lescott, Vertonghen, Jenkinson, Cole, Fonte
    Noble, Marin, Sinclair, McAnuff, Lallana
    Aguero, Rooney, Ba

You could downgrade Ba to Graham/ Cisse/ Holt and save yoursel 1m.
Lallana fixtures very tough a the start.
Marin may not be gauranteed minutes.
McAnuff is another risky one, as you are gambling on a lot of promoted teams.

Not bad, not too keen on McAnuff, Lallana and Jenkinson though.

Jenkinson is a bit of a gamble ,he's not certain to start IMO . Midfield is very light .

Tevez has a penalty miss in his stats from last year. Cant remember if Kun was on the pitch when it was taken though

A new statistics section will provide a comprehensive overview of all players' performances on a match-by-match basis and includes filters to view extended stats when researching transfers

Where do I find this on FPL?
