Scout Report – Oscar

Chelsea continued to splash the cash with wild abandon earlier this week, after the club confirmed on Wednesday they have signed the highly-rated Brazilian Oscar on a five-year contract. The 20-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £25m and is the fifth attacking midfielder to join the club since the end of last season, following the acquisitions of Eden and Thorgan Hazard, Marko Marin and Kevin De Bruyne.

The transfer comes as little surprise, bearing in mind the midfielder revealed days ago he had already undergone a medical for the Champions League winners. While Roberto Di Matteo lavished praise upon the youngster, the Blues boss also indicated the new signings may need time to gel within the Chelsea system in the season ahead:

He is a fantastic player, one of the youngest to push through to the Brazilian national team and he will be a fantastic signing for us. Oscar is a very exciting young talent, a creative midfield player who scores goals. He will add a lot of options and solutions for us in midfield. It will be a challenge to make sure we have the right balance within the team so we will have to see how we fit the team together with all the players.

The Statistics

Oscar’s career began in the Sao Paulo youth system in his native country before he made his first-team debut for the club at the age of 17. His only season there harvested 11 league appearances and a trio of assists before he moved on to Internacional in December 2010. The attacking midfielder made just five appearances over the remainder of his first season at his new club but the 2011/12 campaign saw Oscar produce the type of attacking returns that made him such a highly sought-after talent. Over the course of 26 league appearances, he returned 10 goals and seven assists and helped steer his side to the local state championship. He also turned out five times for the club this season before joining up with his country for Olympic duty.

On the international stage, Oscar featured for Brazil at every level from Under 15 – Under 20 before stepping up to the senior side last year. He has turned out for Brazil on six occasions and netted on his last appearance against Argentina, though his most memorable moment for his country so far has been a hat-trick against Portugal in the semi-finals of the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.

The Prospects

There is no doubt that the Chelsea midfield has both the potential to delight and furiously frustrate Fantasy managers in equal measure next season. Certainly, the 4-2-3-1 shape looks established now and while loan moves for both De Bruyne and Thorgan Hazard have been mooted, the number of options still available to Di Matteo means midfield rotation could bite hard.

Much may depend on how much Di Matteo cedes to the wishes of Roman Abramovich in handing all the marquee names simultaneous starting roles. Considering Eden Hazard was purchased before Di Matteo even penned a full-time contract, it’s fairly apparent that the Russian owner is now intent on seeing his side dazzle – as opposed to grind – their way to silverware. An attacking trident of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar, interchanging positions and wreaking havoc behind Fernando Torres is perhaps the ultimate scenario, though with Marko Marin, Florent Malouda, Daniel Sturridge, Yossi Benayoun and possibly Ramires in the mix for the offensive midfield slots, certainty of game time looks an unlikely ally for the vast majority.

Di Matteo has already hinted that Mata is likely to be afforded time off at the start of the season due to back-to-back Euro 2012 and Olympic involvement with Spain – it’s not yet clear whether Oscar will feature in his immediate plans, though bearing in mind that he could feature for Brazil for up to a week before the domestic campaign kicks off on Saturday August 18, the youngster is likely to be gradually introduced to the Stamford Bridge set-up,.

Priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Oscar is far from cheap and looks no more than a punt initially, with Hazard, Marin and Frank Lampard the likely candidates for a double Gameweek 1 which sees the Blues travel to Wigan before hosting Reading. Intriguingly, Oscar comes in at a mere 5.8 in the Sky Sports game – far cheaper than both Mata (8.9) and Hazard (7.7) – and with Chelsea welcoming (NEW, STO, NOR) to the Bridge by the end of Gameweek 7, there’s little doubt their fixtures are enticing. By then, hopefully, there will be a little more clarity over Di Matteo’s selection policy but there would be no surprise if rotation continues to curtail our best-laid plans over the course of the upcoming season and reduce the Blues midfield to a Fantasy manager’s nightmare.

Dunno about rotation but I picked based on potential - Clyne and Gunter (latter for the double at least). Both attacking minded.

      Don't know about 2 rotators but a 3 x 4m rotation can be done with Norwich/ West Ham/ Reading.

No worries, just thought you might have meant someone else I hadn't considered as a 4.0m option. Adding Wilson to my watchlist anyhow, even though I have Begovic at the moment so won't really consider him for the time being.

    My latest tinkering has seen me abandon the x2 big hitter defenders ;

    Foster/ Begovic
    ACole, Fabio/ Fonte, Demel/ Cuellar.
    Bale, Valencia, Hazard, Noble, Guthrie
    Aguero, Torres, Graham.

With the ubiquitous 2m for Rooney. Anyone like it?

I understand your concept of rotating defenders, but there are 2 Championship sides in each of those rotations. QPR aren't that great at the back I'm afraid either. Get another big hitter in defence. You get goal threat too with them.

Kompany and Terry have done my team loads of good last season with the occasional goal. It's a safer and more solid option IMO.

I do. I am consider dropping the 6.5/6.5/4.5/4.0/4.0 set-up for two cheap rotating pairs and a big hitter. But i'd find it hard to drop Taarabt, Noble or Maloney who i think are all great value and rotate quite nicely.

    Value per points analysis

    – basically take the amount of points (last year) and divide by player cost (this year) to get average points per $1MM spent at each position. I did this for the top 30, top 10, and top 5 at each position and have the following to report:

Exec. Summ – you basically want 20pts per $1MM spent at all positions except keeper.
Demba Ba example – cost $7.5MM, 165 pts last year – 165/7.5 = 22 or he generated 22 pts per $1MM of his cost.

FWRDS – key takeaways: there is strong rationale to pay a premium for the “elite class” of fwrds as there is a gulf between the top 5 and the rest of the pack. The best value for $ comes in the form of cheap players like Holt and Graham, while the worst comes in the form of good players who get rotated on high priced teams like Sturridge and Welbeck.

Top value picks: Ba (22.0 pts / $1MM), Holt (21.2), and Graham (23.0)

Worst value picks: Suarez (14.3), Sturridge (16.0), and Welbeck (13.2)

MIDS – exact same takeaways as the FWRDS noted above.

Top value picks: Dempsey (22.0), Sinclair (21.6), Dyer (22.2), Allen (21.3), Walters (21.5)

Worst value picks: Tony V (15.6), Lampard (15.3), and Nasri (15.8)

DEF – This category has the lowest variance between the top 30, the top 10, and the top 5, and there is value to be found throughout the price bracket. The defenders coming in at $5.0MM are the best value per point in the category.

Top value picks: Evra (22.7), Williams (24.6), Simpson (23.4), Colocini (22.4), Naylor (22.4), McAuley (22.0)

Worst value picks: Verm (18.9), Skrtel (18.8), Cashley (17.1)

KEPPERS – This category is the highest value per dollar out of all positions. While this (obviously) does not consider key aspects (such as rotation strategy for example), it does suggest that there is relatively no point in paying for a premium keeper over a $5.5MM keeper as they will likely finish the season fairly close to each other anyways (unless you are really lazy and just want to feel comfortable sticking Joe Hart in net every week).

Top value picks: Vorm (28.7), Krul (28.4), Friedel (27.8), Howard (27.5), Foster (28.0), Al Habsi (27.6)

Worst value picks: Chech (19.5), Reina (20.3)

Now before everyone jumps all over me about how this doesn’t account for things like: strength of schedule, rotation, the amount of minutes people played, injuries etc. Yes, I’m fully aware of those factors, these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. There are some obvious observations like Ba moving to the side of Cisse (implying he wont be great value this year), Walters horrific last few months last season, Vorm getting “lucky” last year etc. I get it, I just wanted to present a simple analysis on points / $1MM spent here, so don’t shoot the messenger, just presenting the #’s.

Naturally everyone's team is going to change at certain points during the season - There was a time when Ade-Bale-VdV was essential last year.

Players like Valencia logged some minutes at RB, which skews his stats, as any Man U player logging minutes is going to do well (in theory), and I will most likely have him in my team at various points this season as well, despite being out-scored (fantasy wise) by a player like Sinclair, who costs $2.0MM less and probably won't be in my team.

Fantastic post. I'm saving this. I've been intending to do some analysis like this myself. The only issue is if all your team was full of great value players, you would have a lot of money left. So expensive players who lots of points but are bad value are also a key part to the team. This is very useful to see which areas of the team offer the best value. Thank you for this post.

yep thats exactly it - you can't tell who the "Ba's" and "Vorm's" are going to be this year, and you also can't just take the best "value" based off last year's points.

Where it becomes useful is when trying to decide if a high price keeper or defender is worth the extra $1.5MM (evidence suggests otherwise) as there are plenty of lower priced options who finish with comparable points each year.

The inverse is generally true of mids and fwrds - where it does make sense to splash your funds to lock down 2 premium fwrds, and 2-3 premium mids.

It is pretty convential - most ppl typically do this on thier own without really thinking about the #'s behind it anyways

All I'd say is Vaz Te probably won't get the minutes and Britton didn't manage a single goal or assist last year.

Good evening. Favour Ireland to play over a second striker, but Lambert likes 4-4-2 so the friendlies when Bent is back should confirm it. Been 2 up front so far though, with Ireland all over the place.

I'm contently asking my self this. The only issue is that when you spend a lot of money in defense you want it to be a defender so you have the option of transferring them out when other players/teams start to perform better. Flexability is the key. Even though it is 0.5m difference, if you put that 0.5m in defense rather than goalkeepers that makes a 1m difference between the choices.

Even as a Man U fan, I say no. The united defense is looking shady atm, with Vidic unlikely to be back yet, Jones & Ferdinand seem to be current first choice CBs which isn't good. Friedel i worry about because of AVBs attacking style, Vorm is my current choice for 5.5. (also worried about Laudrup's effect though)

Vidic will be back in time, it is confirmed. Vidic and Ferdinand are 1st choice, with Jones/Smalling/Rafael competing for RB, and Evans/Smalling threatening Ferdinands position.

Oh ok, if that's true Vidic gives me a little more confidence. Personally i would like to see United buy another CB at the moment (rather than Lucas Moura), Hummels would be my preferance but unlikely, Subotic would also be good.

Would be nice to have Rafael claiming the RB spot though as that would give us a cheap way into the attacking side of the defense.
