The Burning Question: Can Gylfi Sigurdsson Replicate his Form at Spurs?

Our next Burning Question article focuses on one of last season’s surprise packages, the Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Reading man was snapped up on loan from Hoffenheim by Swansea during the January transfer window and promptly made a mockery of his 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, scoring seven goals and assisting three more while playing in “the hole” behind Danny Graham. His formidable displays took Fantasy managers and Swansea’s opponents by surprise and by the end of the season the Icelandic international was hot property.

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who had also managed Sigurdsson during his stint at Reading, was chief amongst the midfielder’s suitors and keen to re-unite with the playmaker once again this summer but it was Tottenham who ultimately secured him on a permanent deal in the region of £6.5m. With such attacking talents, even a FPL price hike to 9.0 and a 7.3 tag in the Sky Sports game may still represent a bargain. Already during pre-season friendlies he has scored two goals, but questions remain as to how manager Andre Villas-Boas will fit Sigurdsson and fellow attacking midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart into the same side. During Spurs 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy and in last night’s 2-0 loss to Valencia, Sigurdsson played worryingly deep while Van Der Vaart was on the pitch, but has been utilised in an attacking role whenever the Dutch midfielder isn’t on the pitch.

Mark says…
The early signs are good. So far in pre-season it appears that Andre Villas-Boas has looked to harness Sigurdsson’s talents – I can’t help but notice that he’s immediately jumped the pecking order on set-plays. There is concern about the role that Sigurdsson will play once Luka Modric has flown the nest – something which looks inevitable. He could find himself as part of a midfield three with Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale flanking a lone striker, or worse still, deeper in a 4-2-3-1. It remains to be seen if that system will allow Sigurdsson to exert his considerable influence around the opposition’s penalty area. We’d like to think so but, with both Van der Vaart and Bale similarly priced, I wonder if Sigurdsson is the riskier option of the three right now. Certainly I’m leaning towards Bale – he seems more certain to kick-on from last season, whereas Sigurdsson set high standards at Swansea and was a key figure in a side that seemed to be bereft of direct goal threats.

Paul says…
It all depends on his game time. If Sigurdsson becomes an integral member of the Spurs first-team under Andre-Villas Boas, I see no reason as to why he can’t replicate last season’s form. When the summer transfer window closes, we’re likely to get a better idea of Villas-Boas’ intentions – he has maintained a 4-2-3-1 in pre-season with Sigurdsson mainly utilised in “the hole” but the manager has admitted that is mainly down to current personnel. A preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Sigurdsson tucked in behind a lone frontman, would replicate the Icelandic international’s role under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea and Reading and surely boost his appeal. Quite how Villas-Boas will use Rafael Van der Vaart should be key; if the Dutchman is vying for the same role as Sigurdsson, both players’ minutes could be reduced and promote Gareth Bale as the main midfield option in the Tottenham midfield for Fantasy managers. Spurs scored 66 goals last season – 22 more than Swansea – and if Sigurdsson becomes nailed-on, his creativity will be key next term. With the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker ideal for Villas-Boas’ high defensive line, the potential is there for the Portuguese manager to quickly draw a line under his brief spell at Chelsea last time round.

Anorak says…
Whether through the change in manager at Spurs, or the enforced absence of Rafael van der Vaart due to injury, there is certainly a new verve to the attacking midfield slot of Andre Vilas-Boas’ Tottenham side during the pre-season friendlies. Sigurdsson appears to have slotted seamlessly into a Spurs pre-season midfield without the aforementioned Dutchman and Modric, and has made himself at home picking up both an assist and a goal in the final game of that US tour (a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls). That said, the future of both Modric and Van der Vaart is sure to have a key part to play in the potential success of Sigurdsson at Spurs – should they both start the season at White Hart Lane, then midfield spaces will be at a premium, even in the 4-2-3-1 formation likely to be adopted – one of Sigurdsson and Van der Vaart would need to be pushed wide right and, in order to maintain balance (and some semblance of width) could easily find themselves benched.

Andy says…
As the unofficial president of the Gylfi Sigurdsson fan club, this is perhaps the one question that has caused me sleepless nights in pre-season. My short answer is an unequivocal, yes. The Icelander has all the talent to succeed at this level but now that he is surrounded by the likes of Gareth Bale and Rafael Van Der Vaart – and with Emmanuel Adebayor still in the shopping list – I am a little worried he could end up sharing the spoils a little too much. I think he has more than enough ability but I’m definitely fearful of how his new team-mates will impact upon his scoring. There’s just as much a part of me that thinks having a stronger squad around him will only better his cause.

    DDG / Fed
    Cole / Zab / Hangeland / Clark / McCartney
    Mata / Bale / Pienaar / NZogbia / Robson-Kanu
    Torres (+2m) / Tevez / Graham

Real worry is not having Kun and having too much money tied up in defence (usual I go for Ashley Cole and the rest budget!)

It depends on how much you trust the Chelsea defence. Personally I don't and decided to remove A. Cole for a cheap defender, allowed me to keep Aguero in which I feel more comfortable about.

But overall it's not a bad team.

Big headache with Tevez/Kun conundrum and afraid of potential big haul vs SOT

    Come up with this lot....

    Green (SWA)
Cole (wig, REA) Hughes (NOR) Gunter (STO,che)
Lampard (wig, REA) Bale (new) Dyer (qpr) 6.5 MF (Piennar or Nzog)
Kun (SOT) Tevez (SOT) Torres (wig REA)

Subs: Jussy 4.5 MF (aka 2 pointer) Cuellar Clyne
2.0 in the bank for Torres to Pig or upgrading the MF

    Any thoughts? 🙂

The first thing that stands out to me is that you could downgrade Lampard and Cole and save a lot more money. Swap Cole for a cheap defender and have Cech in for Green or Jussy?

Morning peeps. I'm trying to find an extra .5 in this team so I can get de Gea in for Mig. I can't find any sort of change which feels okay.

    Federici - Mig
    Cuellar - Hangeland - Lescott - Demel - Fabio
    Bale - Y. Toure - Larsson - Pinaar - Beausejour
    Aguero - Torres(+2mil) - Graham

I'm not willing to downgrade Aguero, even with his lacklustre performance yesterday I think it was pretty indicative of things to come that Tevez got removed from the field.

I don't really trust Chelsea to score big and neither do I want 3 players loitering around my team after the first game week who I don't want. It's still a risk I know, especially since Hazard looked dangerous yesterday, but I'm willing to take it.

I can't see Lescott not being nailed on considering he was last season when they played only 2 cb. If rumours start floating around about how he won't be playing then I may change to Zab. If they sign another defender I may also reconsider.

I haven't really heard anything about Maloney, is he a decent prospect for points and not just a player-to-free-funds?

        Cheers for the reply.

True that it seems Zab is more certain of a starting role this coming gw, but Lescott is such a goal threat that I would feel inclined to get him in if he did start. Making transfers for defenders always makes me feel dirty.

    A Cole - Koscielny - Zabaleta (+Demel - Tierney)
    Yaya - Bale - Ramires - Michu (+Noble)
    Torres - Aguero - Graham

A bit worried about no Man U attacking coverage. Also do people not see in any value in Liverpool defense (Rodgers likes to build around a solid defense)? Was thinking of Reina and Skrtel as options.

Apparently the defence has not looked worthy of investment. Their pre-season form has made it too risky to invest, if Swansea do come out playing well and being defensively strong then hopefully one week you can be in one of their defenders.

I’ve always gone the option of rotating cheap keepers and with that policy, while it saves you money, you always end up with the scores going the wrong way and clean sheets on your bench. I can only imagine that by rotating an entire defence this problem will only be magnified and could become incredibly frustrating to you. There are a few good bankers you can have in the 5.5 – 6.5 region

Hey lads, can someone please shed some light on my own "burning questions"?:

    1. Is DDG actually the no 1 GK at United? He only played 1.5 out of 6 pre-season games (affected by Euros and Olympics, I know) and even if he is, do you think he will be rotated with Lindegaard?

    2. Who is the best bet to start both games for Chelsea in the DGW? Hazard looked hopeless so I think it's between Mata, Lampard or even Ramires (?)

    3. Which City defender should I go? Lescott didn't feature in the CS, Kolarov is great potential but also likely to be rotated and Zabaletta is cheap and could be the most nailed on.

      1. Not sure anyone knows
      2. Lamps seems like the best bet
      3. It looks like Kompany is the only rotation-proof city defender. For me, every city defender is now too expensive for the amount of points they will return so I have reluctantly turned my back on them.

Interesting. I would have thought at least one of them would be rested in either game but if that's true I think Ramires is great value.

That's confidence! Hope so, do you know why he didn't play in the CS?

      1. He is number one but expect half a dozen games where Lindy unexpectedly starts. Have a nailed on backup keeper.

      2. I'm on lamps. Unsure he'll start both games but he'll prob play one full game followed by a 60 minute game. Worth it when on pens, fks and corners.

      3. Lesscott I'm sure will be bang on, but there is a slight risk. If you want to be sure go with Komps

Not a fan of Lamps but he'll do if he plays both games and I can dish him off in GW3.

I’m fascinated by the different defensive rotation tactics out there. I see 4 types

    1) Two big hitters and a rotating 3. ( 2ex…… a-b-c)

This tactic is reliable but does use up money. The good thing about a rotating 3 for the remaining spot means you can generally get very good fixtures every week. For me its a good tactic provided you don’t already have an expensive keeper. Too much spent in defence will limit your attack

    2) One big hitter and a rotating 4 home and away. ( 1ex……..a-b, a-b)

The strength in this is its simplicity, home fixtures and its potential to last till the next WC etc. However it does rely on nothing going wrong and is inflexible as a result. If one of the defences fail to impress the plan in one rotating pair fails. Then it limits your options in finding a replacement that rotates well with the remaining player. It also fails to hold up if one of the defenses keep clean sheets away from home, as much, or more often as they do at home. Eg. West Ham last season.

    3) Budget defence (2ch…..a,b,c), (1ch……a-b, a-b),

Using cheap defenders who have strong fixtures every week (eg. Swansea, Fulham), while rotating other cheap options using plan 1 or 2.

This is a very cheap alternative and it can score well. However it does require serious planning and will most likely use up more transfers.

In conclusion I see a correlation. I expect that the big hitting expensive defence will use up less transfers over the course of the season. Whereas despite savings in money for cheaper defences I’d expect that they would require more hands on management and more transfers as a result.

    ---------

The 4th type would be something more freestyle. Its a mysterious catagory that is entirely based on flexibility. Good fixtures are important but so is a casual rotation based on fixtures rather than home and away rotation. A nice balance of cheap, expensive and mid priced options make it easy to make transfers if necessary. This is the option I prefer. Hopefully it works out

you make a good point about people with cheap defences having to waste their precious transfers throughout the season of the defence. It’s a bit of a waste – I hate spending transfers on players 5mil or less when they aren’t really ever going to being in the big points

Its a catch 22. The expensive defence uses up money that could be spent to upgrade attacking players. Attacking players score more points than defenders. Hence free-styling could be an alternative. Break away from the status quo

He's been ahead of Aguero for me for the last week or so but suddenly I'm not so confident, even though he just scored in the CS!

I think it comes down to the fact that I can't captain him due to his lack of security and I may have to use a free transfer to ship him out when Balotelli is back.

Aguero is probably worth the extra in the long-run but it's so hard to ignore Tevez.

    Morning Folks... 🙂

How does this team sound, I'm trying Sky Sports one this year so your thoughts would be grateful. Was wanting to play a 3-5-2 but now thinking this due to funds.

    Hart
    Zabaleta, Cole, Hangeland, Fabio
    Toure, Arfa, Hazard, Pienaar
    Aguero, Jelavic

i'd get rid of hazard straight away. with no bench, in the sky game you want players who are assured of starts

      too much spent of defence

defensive midfielders are a good choice in that game due to the bonus points scoring system

Agree with defence, only got Cole in for DGW then shifting him out, what do you mean about defensive mid being good. Thanks for your thoughts.

check the scoring system - you get addtional points for challenges

Get Arteta in for Hazard, you want players who will get passing bonus points, will start and have a goal threat.

Why all the Torres love? He was top scorer of the Euros sure, a brace against ROI and a goal when the match was won? Fabregas was preferred up top vs Nino... surely an indication as to how much confidence the manager has in him, plus, he didn't exactly set the league on fire at the end of the season.. his performances were relatively poor at the euros..he had a decent match yesterday but at 10.0 million he's no doubt an expensive commodity. Just my two cents

IMO unless chelsea sign another striker he is guaranteed to start and he will score goals, he is deadly in one on ones

He won the Golden Boot, Udiot. He has a DGW against Wigan and Reading, Utit.

We all know he's pants but the DGW and that QPR game late last season make him difficult to ignore.
