Technical Area

The Technical Area – Assessing City’s 3-4-1-2

This evening we bring back our series of “Technical Area” articles which offer tactical insight on a match or team each Gameweek. While the Guardian chalkboards are no more, this season we have built our own maps and charts to feed these articles and to provide a preview of the kind of tools and content available to our members…

Having obtained Opta data from Sunday’s Community Shield match between City and Chelsea, we were all set to analyse each side’s respective systems in terms of Fantasy potential but the dismissal of Branislav Ivanovic weights the head-to-head team comparison too much in Man City’s favour. As a result, we’ve decided to take a look at the league champions’ new 3-4-1-2 formation, as utilised by Roberto Mancini is several pre-season games prior to yesterday’s match – in particular, we focus on the midfield area.

Milner and Kolarov
Looking at City’s average position (below left, top), the system played out more like a 3-2-3-2 yesterday. With Vincent Kompany (4) stationed deep and central, the wide-positioned centre-halves afforded City plenty width at the back, which allowed James Milner (7) and Aleksandar Kolarov (13) to push far forward on the flanks – when in possession, the duo were almost as far up the field as Samir Nasri (19). Indeed, the pair received more passes in the final third of the pitch than any other City players; Milner’s 22 and Kolarov’s 20 were superior to frontmen Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, with 17 and 14 respectively.

Man City Average Positions

Mancini’s system demands the pair supply plenty of balls from out wide and both delivered time and again; Milner registered 11 crosses and Kolarov 10 but the former’s distribution in the final third was relatively poor. The former Villa man has a lowly 71.4% pass success rate in this area – compare that to Kolarov’s 86.7% or Nasri’s 89.5% and it’s clear that, despite creating four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (more than any player in yesterday’s match) there was plenty room for improvement in Milner’s contribution.

From a Fantasy perspective, these positions will clearly be crucial to City in the season ahead if Mancini decides to operate with such a system. What also looks essential in order for this formation to flourish is a high work-rate in these key areas. Both players made three tackles each – a tally bettered only by Pablo Zabaleta – while the pair also demonstrated strong aerial ability; Kolarov won four duels in the air, more than any other player yesterday, while Milner was next best with two, alongside Vincent Kompany and Nigel De Jong.

It seems unlikely that Nasri or David Silva will be suited to the wide roles in such a system, then, meaning the pair would likely battle it out for the role in “the hole” behind the front two whenever Mancini rolls out this tactic. With the City boss also playing the likes of Zabaleta and Gael Clichy in the back-three, the versatility of the City full-backs could well prosper from a Fantasy perspective within such a line-up.

Despite Mancini’s post-match uncertainty over the tactics, there’s no doubt the new formation has been a definite hit so far for the Etihad club, with Wigan’s successful implementation of a three-man defence in the second half of last season highlighting its capabilities within the Premier League, if utilised intelligently.

Man City Average Positions

A quick glimpse at City’s shape in their previous encounter against Chelsea (left) highlights the difference. Silva (21) and Nasri (19) were the wide men that day but both have a tendency to cut inside when on the ball and, for all their intricate possession, Mancini’s men lacked any real width further up the field – a criticism that was levelled at the champions on a number of occasions last term. It’s perhaps debatable as to whether this will be their default tactic but it clearly offers City a very strong Plan B, going on yesterday’s performance and result.

Toure and Nasri
As David Silva continued to build up his fitness with a brief cameo yesterday, Yaya Toure and Nasri took the opportunity to grab our Fantasy attention with a goal apiece in the 3-2 win. As the average position map (top, left) highlights, Toure (42) was relatively deep, playing just ahead of Nigel De Jong (34) but he was the beating heart of the City side, making an incredible 100 passes – a statistic that will no doubt catch the eye of Fantasy managers playing the Sky Sports game, bearing in mind the new bonus point system. For all his possession, though, Toure rarely ventured into the final third with any real intent – he made just 10 successful passes in the final third and scored with his only effort, firing home from outside the box after a poor John Terry clearance.

Nasri, however, demonstrated the danger he could carry when playing in “the hole” in this new system. The Frenchman made 17 passes inside Chelsea’s defensive third – the most executed by any City player, with only two of his passes going astray in this vital area. The former Arsenal man also managed two shots on target inside the box; once again, this stat was higher than any of his team mates and, with a goal and assist for his endeavours, he scored 15.3 in our ICT Index, the top mark for Mancini’s side in yesterday’s 3-2 triumph.

Having looked at the midfield, our next step is to analyse the respective displays of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero within the system in a separate “Versus” article exclusively for Members. With a price difference of 9.0 to 11.5 in FPL, the question of who to plump for is a hot topic on the site right now ahead of Saturday’s rapidly approaching deadline, with Tevez’s goal already boosting his ownership considerably over the past 24 hours.

Everyone tells my Harte will be replaced by Shorey, but most if not all pre-season games had Harte starting... anyone know more?

    Suggestions/comments?

    DDG/Federici

    Zabaleta/Jenkinson/Verthongen/A.Cole/Clyne

    Bale/Ramires/McAnuff/Michu/Nzogz

    Tevez/Torres/Graham

A bit worried that midfield might be a little weak but they all have good fixtures, defence is also pretty pricy but i really fancy them all. Also have saved 2m for the Torres -> Rooney move in gw2.

I do think the midfield is a bit weak. I would downgrade one of the expensive defenders and upgrade a mid. Very solid squad overall, though ... and if I were you I wouldn't be afraid to roll that team out for GW1.

Well yeah but two of the midfielders have dgw and i fancy Ramires to do the business and the only other one i would have instead would be Mata, and that means 2m less in defence which again would probably mean Cole going and then i would be relying alot on Chelsea offensively. Idk, might be the good move as they are playing weak opposition.

I agree with the Ramires over Mata option. No problems there from me. Honestly, I think it is a very solid squad. I prefer a cheaper defence, but that is just personal preference. I have no issues with anyone you've selected. Good squad.

Sorry for the re-post, but lost this at the bottom of the page:

    Any glaring problems here?

    DDG Fed
    Cole Terry Hang Fabio Cuellar
    Bale Kagawa Yaya Pienaar Guthrie
    Tevez Torres Graham

4 point hit for GW 2 = Torres -> Rooney & Terry to a 5.0 or cheaper defender to be named (probably from Newcastle)

    Cheers

Cheers. I totally agree generally, but I believe Torres & Terry will outscore Rooney & a defender by enough to cover the 4. Of course, I could be wrong. Worst case is I'm latching on to two players that are likely to see price rises (Rooney and whoever the defender is).

Yeah i know what youre saying but i think you should prepare for Torres->Rooney without taking a hit, save up the money some place else in your team. Taking hits for defenders is really really a no-no.

Lamps still takes pens and does get into positions even if hes playing deeper to start. Think Zogs will flourish under Lamberts gung ho tactics as well

yes i guess i also thought,
        and this might be crazy
the SAF could play Valenica on the inside, next to carrick and welbeck on the bench with Kagawa in behind
        so mids would read

What do you guys think of this team? My thoughts are Torres + Nasri > Rooney + Nzog. I know a pt hit in the first week isn't ideal, but it could pay off I think. I know Gerrard seems out of place but I am taking a gamble on him as well. Any advice on changes?

after my rant about defences... i'm considering dropping Hangeland or another or all of them haha
        i was thinking
        Kompany to ZAB
and Hangeland to a 4mil that frees up
2.5 too add to my 1mil already there
and i can upgrade Maloney or Petric or noble to someone good,
or i if i decide to drop kompany to a 4mil keep Hangeland to rotate
i can get +3.5 which makes me 4.5m in the bank and move Maloney to Yaya...
and 2.5 mil to do Torres to rooney or tevez to augero.....

          yes you should.
you should only have 2 big hitters at defence and rotate 3rd spot due to their fixtures. if you have 3 big hitters + Hangeland, it cant called rotation cuz you can play 3 big hitters everyweek and waste money on 4,5M-5M def

this is somewhat of a rotation
              i dropped Hangeland
              my theory being
in week2 i play Demel over Enrique,
AND ONLY on rare circumstances does this happen
so my back three are pretty nailed on
              Hart, (Bench Gazzaniga)
              Kompany(VC), Vidic, Jose E ( bench: 1, Demel, Bench 3: Clynne)
Bale, Kagawa, Allen, Noble(Bench 2: Maloney)
              Torres(C), Tevez, Petric
              +2mil
so if torres doesn't perform and the Pig is running hot i have a MAN U spot and 2mil for him,
              if he's not
i can sit and wait or jump on someone else, I.E Suarez/Cisse/Jelavic/Poldolski/D.Cisse/Defore/Adzy@Spurs/Ba/Giroud/ETC
anyone but another Man C player or RVP is in my reach 😀

Cazorla, stick or fold? From looking at Gunners and others comments and checking their latest preseason I think he'll be more Modric-like. Plenty of posession, great passes ,initiating most attacks, but not too many assists or goals. Not worth 9m?

We need a Gunner in here to give a clearer picture. I read a few articles/blogs and this one makes me unsure about Cazorla's points potential, no doubt he'll be a great central mid though but too deep? Podolski looks good for 8.5m!

Well I am an arsenal fan and followed all the pre season friendlies. I don't have any arsenal players in my plans atleast for first few games. Also Wenger said that he will ease all his new 3 signings in to premier league. Though I personally think Podolski will be a nailed starter and a great differential if RVP leaves.

No, for Arsenal Song and Arteta play deep. Cazorla will be most attacking of the midfielders but its more about the way arsenal play. He may provide few assists (that too he will have to share with song and arteta) but I guess he not worth 9m. You can find better options at 9m specially with not so kind arsenal fixtures.

Just traded out Lampard for Carzola. Reason being is because Carzola is probably more nailed on and I can't see Lampard playing full games during the DGW. It also saves me the need to get rid of Lampard prior to GW3. The extra transfer could come in handy. Anyone else thinking of going without a Chelsea mid?

Kagawa is an alternative but as I intend to get Rooney in at some point I'm not that keen to double on United attack. I think Carzola is a good value option for Arsenal cover because RVP is so expensive. His set piece duty was enough to convince me

I wouldn't double up on West Ham's defence for starters.
Cech... meh, i'd probably go for Ivanovich instead for his goal threat.
Ian Harte is ancient and has competition for left back.
Fabio is injury prone and QPR have dodgy fixtures.

      I would probably do Cech/Fabio/Tomkins -> Green/Ivanovich/Cuellar

I personally wouldn't go with cech as i think you can find much better value with a cheaper keeper or a lot safer time with heart. If you got that much left over I would assume you're doing Torres to Rooney so realistically you have 1.5 to work with in which case I would upgrade pog, and maybe do dyer to Allen.

Solid, safe and decent balance. Am considering doubling up with the same 2 Spurs mids myself after week 1 or 2.

I wouldn't go for Begovic though, as good value as he is, having to use a transfer on a keeper once Sorensen gets games is too frustrating.

Cheers. You may be right on Begs, although if he plays (likely) then he's great value and rotates pretty well with Schwarzer. The plan would be to only play him in 3 of the first 12 weeks, so even if he did get dropped for Sorenson I probably wouldn't waste a transfer on him - I'd just play Schwarzer and then sort it out when I wildcard.

Ivan is still a doubt due to his red! both bale n VDV together kinda amazes me really! i feel bale wud be enough to start with n play a city mid instead of VDV! rest all is good!

Ivanovich isn't a doubt, no ban.

The FA confirmed Ivan won't get banned so he should be a lock to start at RB.

Bale and VDV is a risk, but both are pretty much nailed on, very attacking, have great fixtures and the latter is on pens. Plus the way AVB plays I expect goals from this Spurs team.

But will you be able to turn down the value of Defoe if they don't sign a forward in the next 2 weeks.. 3 Spurs attackers might be pushing it 😉

In that scenario possibly both with a premium Rooney/Aguero. We saw from the BPs last season you have to have 3 quality goalscorers.
