Fantasy Premier League Focus – Gameweek 3

Once again, we take time out to analyse the consequences of another Gameweek in Fantasy Premier League. Looking at the performances of the top five in the Scout League, we also cast an eye the current transfer trends, with bandwagons picking up pace over the international break:

Scout League Standings

Asriel Chen not only remains at the top of the Scout League, he climbs to number one overall in the world – despite transferring out Santi Cazorla as part of a four point hit. The decision to part with the Gunners’ playmaker helped fund a move for Robin Van Persie and with captain Carlos Tevez, Michu, Yaya Toure and Thomas Vermaelen all producing the goods, Asriel boosted his total to an incredible 303 points to proudly sit atop the standings ahead of the two-week international break.

Renior Buffon moves into second place in the Scout League and sixth overall after scoring 81 points in the Gameweek gone by. Captain Van Persie and Tevez were the main protagonists, while Hatem Ben Arfa and Moussa Dembele also chipped in from midfield along with Toure – Renoir will be happy with his wildcard after a strong contribution from the new acquisitions.

Alex Henshaw edges ominously into third place after returning 105 points in Gameweek 3 – the only member of our top five to register triple figures. Six of his front seven – Van Persie, Tevez, Ben Arfa, Michu, Toure and Cazorla – all grabbed goals, while at the back, Ciaran Clark and Guy Demel registered 17 points between them, though he’s yet to acquire Eden Hazard ahead of Chelsea’s trip to QPR next time out.

Moving onto fourth position, we find Kelly Gosson. Once again, the Van Persie-Tevez combination worked wonders, while Toure and Nathan Dyer produced the goods from midfield. Kelly racked up 77 points over Gameweek 3 and sits in 77th overall, with a wildcard now played. Darren O’Connor makes up the top five after returning 64 points last week. Going against general consensus, he opted for Lukas Podolski alongside Tevez up top, while Thomas Vermaelen and Michu also helped boost his tally to 275 points overall – enough to earn 94th place in the FPL standings.

Finally, the Scout Contributors league has a new leader. Big Dunc’s decision to take a four point hit paid off handsomely, with the usual suspects such as Tevez, Van Persie, Toure and Michu, joined by Cazorla and Jermain Defoe, helping Dunc rack up 93 points – he now sits on 240 points overall, and in 9,044 place in the rankings.

The Market Trends

With wildcards continuing to be wielded at a frantic pace, player prices are more volatile than ever. Eden Hazard is the most popular player this week – over 105,000 Fantasy managers have picked up the Chelsea midfielder after a blank Gameweek 3. Hazard has already leapt 0.6 in price and looks set to rise again, with a week and a half still left before the Premier League kicks back into action.

Carlos Tevez is hot on Hazard’s heels, with over 91,000 grabbing the City striker. Tevez has scored in three of his side’s matches so far and has accrued 33 points, more than any forward – that price of 9.8 continues to rapidly escalate. Top scoring player in FPL, Michu shows little sign in slowing down after yet another goal last weekend – the Spaniard has acquired over 83,000 transfers in and has found a place in over 31% of Fantasy teams thanks to his endeavours thus far.

Certainly, it’s no surprise to see Robin Van Persie amongst the most popular players around. With a hat-trick against Southampton, the Dutchman’s steady climb in ownership shows no sign of abating – he’s been snapped up by over 80,000 new owners and is a massive armband favourite for the Gameweek 4 home clash with Wigan.

Elsewhere, Yaya Toure (50,000) and Fernando Torres (46,000) are tempting plenty, while the cut-price route into the Arsenal defence offered by Carl Jenkinson has seen over 70,000 Fantasy managers scramble aboard the bandwagon, despite the imminent return of Bacary Sagna at right-back. Gareth McAuley and Winston Reid have also received significant investment at the back after both returned goals and clean sheets last weekend.

For transfers out, Gareth Bale has taken the biggest hit this week, with over 54,000 Fantasy managers losing faith in the Spurs midfielder. The Welshman’s failure to produce in the first three Gameweeks, despite a kind schedule, has already seen his price drop to 9.4; with (rdg, QPR, AVL) amongst his next four, though, the potential is clearly still there for Bale to produce.

David Silva and Samir Nasri have been sold on by a combined 57,000+ with a sideways move to Yaya Toure offering a cheaper and more consistent alternative in City’s midfield. Many have also lost patience with Shinji Kagawa, despite a home clash with Wigan up next – 30,000 have moved the former Dortmund man on as midfields are drastically re-assembled.

At the back, City’s failure to produce clean sheets has seen many dispose of Gael Clichy and Vincent Kompany’s services, while Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to drop David De Gea was enough to convince over 20,000 to sell off the United stopper.

Newcastle pair Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse have been slow out the blocks this season and, after a blank apiece against Villa, the Magpies pair have been dismissed by over 64,000 teams. While a Gameweek 4 trip to Everton looks tricky, the following two fixtures – (NOR, rdg) – still look prosperous for Alan Pardew’s side.

The transfers out continue to rack up for Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero. Both could well be huge differentials if they return to action over the next few weeks; at present, they have 6.9% and 6% ownership respectively, compared to Van Persie’s 29.2% and Tevez’s 47.3%.

    Is there any problems with having 12 of your 15 all playing away each alternate week?

              you have approx 24.7 to play with there, so maybe 4 5mil players & a 4.5mil? if not id def get rid of jenk, ivan & davies (jenk & davies due to rotation) but that is just imo... im doing poorly so what ever you think yourself 🙂

                Cool. Where's this 24.7 coming from? I don't like spending much on defence hence cheaper options. Reckon Jenk and Davies will both get games

                  ivan = 6.8
                  jenk = 4.7
                  mca = 5.1
                  dem = 4.1
                  dav = 4
                  total = 24.7

                  if you are happy with those 2 def keep them!

        Ok, so here´s the thing (i´ve proably explained it several times)I think there was a stat on this as well showing that Arsenal´s defense wasn´t as bad as people thought last season...with precursors obviously. Arsenal play better and seem to score more goals against top 6 teams

        Check it out if you must...besides Cazorla is fixture proof. His touches won´t change, is pass accuracy won´t fluxtuate...Embrace it.

      This is where I'd like to see the price changes capped at .1/.2 max. I'd like to keep patient with Bale but when he's dropping like a stone and Hazard is going up like a rocket, it's just not feasible. It would help to differentiate teams in my opinion.

        I see your point, but what you've described deprives patience of any virtue. If you are right about Bale, your reward will come and will be deserved because you ran the gauntlet of silly price changes. In other words, the chaos builds character. 😉

    Team is pretty much set for next GW, what do you say?

    Vorm (Bego)

    Taylor, Baines, Gallas (Clyne, Demel)

    Michu, Nolan, Cazorla, Hazard (Maloney)

    Tevez, RVP (c), Graham

    Lots of players away from home so pretty much depending on captain VP, Cazorla and Hazard to carry me next week.

      Hold onto Jarvis. Minor strain. He'll be back soon enough and straight into the starting role.

      More worrying is the potential absence of Andy Carroll as I, probably like you, bought Jarvis specifically to plant crosses on his head as well as score a few himself

    Looks it was mistake wild carding last week. Now I have a lot of the players that I want already for a hit. NO value in it now.

        When I was thinking to do it I didn't owned:

        RVP Tevez
        Michu Hazard Nollan

        Now I have all of them. Only I miss Santi. So all the big players are in for a hit. Maybe that would be the best paid hit during the season but maybe it was losing of points. Will see

    My most painful FPL moment: 2 seasons ago when I lost my ML like so;

    Rival in 2nd place had Huth in his starting 11 for one of the last few Gameweeks. Picked up a knock in the Europa League matchups and was out, but was pipped by the Scouts to make a start. Meanwhile Brede Hangeland scores 2 goals, keeps a clean sheet, collects maximum bonus and climbs off his bench to gift him 23 points and move him uptop. I was behind by 3 points, lost the league by 7. Since then, my addiction began.

          Clean sheets are rare in the PL; too much quality in the league.

    Ok, after a famously awful start, I'm on the WC rampage. Got in there right after matches Sunday, so up 0.6 already, but starting to actually think about a final team once I've made my cash. How's this for a lineup? Despite the ultra-budget defence, it's a serious question. I mean, do i really need more defence at the rate goals have been being scored?

    Here it is:

    Jaask/Bego
    McAuley/Jenks/Fonte/Demel/Cuellar
    Hazard/Yaya/Santi/Michu/Nolan
    RVP/Tevez/Lambert

    Thoughts?

      I think you may have a who do I bench problem for the front 8 and a corresponding problem rotating 3 of 5 defenders. i have pretty much the same team as you but I decided to have Guthrie instead of Nolan and was able to squeeze Baines in. Having seen all of Everton's games, he is basically playing on the wing (and takes half the corners and set pieces and is on pens). He will pay every game and I will rotate the other 4 defenders.

    Some years I have wildcarded after Gameweek 3..usually because my original selections have been so duff! This follows the slightly twisted logic that, having got things so badly wrong first time, I’ll miraculously get it right with the wildcard!!! This season though, having luckily had Hazard, Cazorla, RVP and Tevez since the start, I’m resisting the temptation..although its very tempting as I’m on here everyday reading all the good advice!

    I fully respect those who play the WC to make money..and those who need to play it to make ground..but I just feel 3 weeks isn’t long enough to see how the Prem League season is going! And this one has started a bit strangely..no Man Utd or City cleansheets etc! Chances are, WCers are busy stocking up with WBA defenders, West Ham defenders, Arsenal defenders, Swansea attackers/midfielders etc. Quite right too as that’s how the early trends are going. But just out of interest, I had a look back to this time last season..AFTER 3 GAMEWEEKS…

    Wolves had 7 points on the board with 2 clean sheets! Wonder how many of us brought in a Wolves defender at this time last season! Hmmm. (they won only 3 more matches all season)

    Arsenal had scored 0, 0 and then 2 (in the 8-2 defeat). On that form, you’d have got rid of RVP I imagine! (they ended up scoring 72 more goals that season, despite the shaky start)

    Chelsea had 7 points and were being talked up as potential champions. As indeed they had been the year before. (they came 6th)

    Bolton had already scored 7 goals. Wonder how many of us brought in Davies or Klasnic as a cheap 3rd striker. (Bolton only scored another 39 goals in the remaining 35 matches).

    Swansea had failed to score a goal. (They ended up with 44)

    Wigan had already kept 2 clean sheets (they only kept another 6 all season)

    Of course there were lots of reliable trends after 3 games last season too..Man City being the top scorers, United deadly in front of goal too etc…

    but my point is, if you’re wildcarding, beware false trends! Good Luck 🙂 🙂

      I often seem to suffer from a shaky start. Last season I didn't really get going till about GW10, then it was pretty much green arrows all the way. If I've used my wildcard early on to good effect, I might get out of the traps a bit better. That's the hope, anyway!

            I was ridiculed on here for it until he scored then the place exploded.

            A guy in ML messaged me on facebook to wind me up before the game that I may be winning before that game, but he had RvP and Sniejder. I messaged him back afterwards, saying who needs RvP when you have Krohn-Delhi. He had to go and check my team as he thought there was no way I could possibly have picked him

        but that being said, the other 2 weeks weren't quite as valourous as GW1, when no one knew who he was and he has 0.3% ownership

          Yeah I agree. It was quite awesome for having a 0.1% owned big hitter who was from a team who were underdogs in a group of death. Casuals may have jumped on the bandwagon but people still avoided him for his fixtures. Anyway, well done to both of us. 😉
          That's a story to tell your grandchildren. 😉

    OMG: after WC'ing this week I think I have this year's winning team:

    Begovic, Jaaskalainen
    Baines, Vermaelen, Demel, Clyne, Gorkss
    Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, Nolan, Guthrie
    RVP, Tevez, Fletcher

    No weaknesses 😯

      Maybe Caz to Yaya then upgrade one of the defenders by a million?

      Almost the same as mine, but I have Gibbs instead of Verm, foster instead of Beg and lambert over fletcher.

      I really want fletcher as my 3rd striker, but don't want to give up Gibbs or Foster to do it.

      Uh, no. This is a knee-jerk team.

      Begovic - check his fixtures, you won't be using him that much

      Why pick Gorkks when you can have Gunter, an attacking RB?

      Double West Ham defense is madness.

      When Hazard, Cazorla, and Michu stop firing, you're going to have to depend on Nolan and Guthrie in midfield. Yikes.

      Fletcher? Seriously?

        Fletcher, a 3rd tier striker that averages over 100pts over three seasons? Yes please.

        If Hazard, Cazorla or Michu stop firing, he could just transfer them out....;-)

      Good team but same four scrub clones: Clyne...Demel...Gorkss...Guthrie...

      You´ll be getting 97% of your points from 8, but a dame decent looking 8.
