Fantasy Premier League Focus – Gameweek 3

Once again, we take time out to analyse the consequences of another Gameweek in Fantasy Premier League. Looking at the performances of the top five in the Scout League, we also cast an eye the current transfer trends, with bandwagons picking up pace over the international break:

Scout League Standings

Asriel Chen not only remains at the top of the Scout League, he climbs to number one overall in the world – despite transferring out Santi Cazorla as part of a four point hit. The decision to part with the Gunners’ playmaker helped fund a move for Robin Van Persie and with captain Carlos Tevez, Michu, Yaya Toure and Thomas Vermaelen all producing the goods, Asriel boosted his total to an incredible 303 points to proudly sit atop the standings ahead of the two-week international break.

Renior Buffon moves into second place in the Scout League and sixth overall after scoring 81 points in the Gameweek gone by. Captain Van Persie and Tevez were the main protagonists, while Hatem Ben Arfa and Moussa Dembele also chipped in from midfield along with Toure – Renoir will be happy with his wildcard after a strong contribution from the new acquisitions.

Alex Henshaw edges ominously into third place after returning 105 points in Gameweek 3 – the only member of our top five to register triple figures. Six of his front seven – Van Persie, Tevez, Ben Arfa, Michu, Toure and Cazorla – all grabbed goals, while at the back, Ciaran Clark and Guy Demel registered 17 points between them, though he’s yet to acquire Eden Hazard ahead of Chelsea’s trip to QPR next time out.

Moving onto fourth position, we find Kelly Gosson. Once again, the Van Persie-Tevez combination worked wonders, while Toure and Nathan Dyer produced the goods from midfield. Kelly racked up 77 points over Gameweek 3 and sits in 77th overall, with a wildcard now played. Darren O’Connor makes up the top five after returning 64 points last week. Going against general consensus, he opted for Lukas Podolski alongside Tevez up top, while Thomas Vermaelen and Michu also helped boost his tally to 275 points overall – enough to earn 94th place in the FPL standings.

Finally, the Scout Contributors league has a new leader. Big Dunc’s decision to take a four point hit paid off handsomely, with the usual suspects such as Tevez, Van Persie, Toure and Michu, joined by Cazorla and Jermain Defoe, helping Dunc rack up 93 points – he now sits on 240 points overall, and in 9,044 place in the rankings.

The Market Trends

With wildcards continuing to be wielded at a frantic pace, player prices are more volatile than ever. Eden Hazard is the most popular player this week – over 105,000 Fantasy managers have picked up the Chelsea midfielder after a blank Gameweek 3. Hazard has already leapt 0.6 in price and looks set to rise again, with a week and a half still left before the Premier League kicks back into action.

Carlos Tevez is hot on Hazard’s heels, with over 91,000 grabbing the City striker. Tevez has scored in three of his side’s matches so far and has accrued 33 points, more than any forward – that price of 9.8 continues to rapidly escalate. Top scoring player in FPL, Michu shows little sign in slowing down after yet another goal last weekend – the Spaniard has acquired over 83,000 transfers in and has found a place in over 31% of Fantasy teams thanks to his endeavours thus far.

Certainly, it’s no surprise to see Robin Van Persie amongst the most popular players around. With a hat-trick against Southampton, the Dutchman’s steady climb in ownership shows no sign of abating – he’s been snapped up by over 80,000 new owners and is a massive armband favourite for the Gameweek 4 home clash with Wigan.

Elsewhere, Yaya Toure (50,000) and Fernando Torres (46,000) are tempting plenty, while the cut-price route into the Arsenal defence offered by Carl Jenkinson has seen over 70,000 Fantasy managers scramble aboard the bandwagon, despite the imminent return of Bacary Sagna at right-back. Gareth McAuley and Winston Reid have also received significant investment at the back after both returned goals and clean sheets last weekend.

For transfers out, Gareth Bale has taken the biggest hit this week, with over 54,000 Fantasy managers losing faith in the Spurs midfielder. The Welshman’s failure to produce in the first three Gameweeks, despite a kind schedule, has already seen his price drop to 9.4; with (rdg, QPR, AVL) amongst his next four, though, the potential is clearly still there for Bale to produce.

David Silva and Samir Nasri have been sold on by a combined 57,000+ with a sideways move to Yaya Toure offering a cheaper and more consistent alternative in City’s midfield. Many have also lost patience with Shinji Kagawa, despite a home clash with Wigan up next – 30,000 have moved the former Dortmund man on as midfields are drastically re-assembled.

At the back, City’s failure to produce clean sheets has seen many dispose of Gael Clichy and Vincent Kompany’s services, while Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to drop David De Gea was enough to convince over 20,000 to sell off the United stopper.

Newcastle pair Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse have been slow out the blocks this season and, after a blank apiece against Villa, the Magpies pair have been dismissed by over 64,000 teams. While a Gameweek 4 trip to Everton looks tricky, the following two fixtures – (NOR, rdg) – still look prosperous for Alan Pardew’s side.

The transfers out continue to rack up for Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero. Both could well be huge differentials if they return to action over the next few weeks; at present, they have 6.9% and 6% ownership respectively, compared to Van Persie’s 29.2% and Tevez’s 47.3%.

2 – Arsenal have won as many Premier League games in 2012 at Anfield as Liverpool

    In other news,

Klasnic has signed for Bundesliga side Mainz 05,

Isn't Chelsea almost similar to current Arsenal team. They have many creators in midfielders but no good finisher.... So hazard passes will be in vain if torres misses it, just like cazorla passes were wasted.

I blame this place for all the wildcards/transfers happening - people are so aware of the price rises now even the casual players are building a nicely valued squad and not waiting and ultimately missing the boat.

Standard has definitely gone up, not a bad thing, but is probably only going to get more hectic as the seasons go on.

      For you? No problem!

I remember Jamiesep (Maths student, I think) and other programming/maths students trying to understand it.. they'd actually managed to find a link to a page that had the formula I think (or a very detailed explanation).

I just lurked and read what they'd made of it but I don't think they quite agreed on their interpretations and although my maths and logic skills are pretty good I was pretty lost/bored.

I think it was because defender(s) scored in both games, and therefore had high Goal to Shot Success ratio compared to players like Hazard, who take say 5 or 6 shots a game and none of them go i, lowering his baps potential.

Yeah.. defenders who attack (i.e. dribble, cross, shoot, score) are bps magnets even when competing against attacking players in their team.

Which is why Baines is a bps magnet.

I've seen some teams with 2/3m value more, that's pretty scary if you're like me and haven't wildcarded and your team value is pretty poor. I'm trying to reassure myself that at this moment team values are all going to look outrageous but it doesn't automatically translate to higher points. One bad week and these people with the High Value won't know what to do with their money and will have already wildcarded. right? RIGHT?

IMHO anyone who WC'd last week is a fool. No idea how deadline-day will pan out the teams, international breaks etc - we saw Swansea and Everton disappoint. You and I will be there on judgement day, when 10 teams have 2 DGWks in a row and we WC.

This is the frustrating part, you are 5 points ahead of me but your Team Value is 2m more. And you're telling me arrogantly that I will drift further from the pack, are you not also susceptible to this 'drifting away'? 5 points is not much difference is it?

Remember that value isn't static ... those kneejerkers/casuals/venture capitalists will flock to the next flavor of the week ... and unless value is traded in at the right times, it will be lost.

Worrying too much about value is piffle, imo.

I still can WC and it's obvious what you would consider the 'serious issues' but I'm not suffering to play an ok-ish team next GW. I don't understand why WC'ing is a MUST just to get the exact same team as everyone else for GW4, my differentials could give me a boost.

      Money is overrated.

Last year, I had a strategy from the outset to build a budget that would allow me to incorporate Aguero, Rooney and RvP by the closing stages.

In reality, I had about £10m or so sitting in the bank for the last few gws..

I would even go as far to say that from what I'd observed in numerous other teams is that there is a 'peak value' that results in optimum pts. Players with excessively profitable teams inadvertently end up taking too many hits (as I did last year).

And the golden rule.. never take hits*

*unless you really really really have to.

I know from experience that this burns. Alot.

I think I understand what you mean. So you're saying the 'peak' value is sort of a healthy value that gives you flexibility, but excessive value does not necessarily mean you are any better off as you've got all this surplus money eventually? And of course, if the team does have excessive value it does suggest that hits may have been taken to purely accommodate risers/players that are flavour of the month.

        Cheers

          Pretty much.

I've learnt the hard way not to worry too much about team value. As long as you're making decent decisions and getting a good average score.. you'll have a good bank.

Players with team values several millions less than mine outscored me by 100+ pts.

£ can be a red herring.

I think you're right, Tang, on the "peak value" of your team. I also had loads left over late last season. 4 or 5 mill in the bank was common for me from about GW33.

I was actually embarrassed by the amount of money I had.. kept saying to myself 'its about pts dummy'.

All the expensive players never hit form at the same time.. so you don't need a ridiculous budget. Getting inform budget players at the right time is the key (i.e. Pienaar, Jelavic last quater of 2011/2012)

Havent posted a couple of days, just been observing and studying it all on here haha 🙂

WC used last week and im 50/50 with how I feel about it. I had a great week and made wonderful ground on almost everyone in all my leagues. 74pt week and would have been more had I stuck with Jusski and Demel (think he got a c.s before going off injured right?). Vorm, Boyce, Vertonghen and Saylor all failed miserably but I am going to leave all 4 of them in this week as surely at least one will get a clean sheet or goal (Vorm? haha).

Yaya and HBA brought in the goods, whilst Pienaar and Bale flopped as I completely expected them to...yet still brought them in!! I am not convinced on Pienaar for the long run, but I personally am under the impression Bale will eventually rack up some points.

RVP , Tevez we know what happened there 🙂 Graham ....meh

74pts, wildcard used and 50/50 happy. I'll take it....but finally a question or two for you all....

Vertonghen, Bale and Graham for Hazard, Fletcher and a 4.9mid in either Noble, Colback or Matty Taylor????? 8pt hit but I have to get Hazard in before im priced out, and as mentioned twice, my WC is gone til Jan. Thanks.

My friend asked me for help with his team cause he had a terrible start to the season. After looking at it I think around 7 or 8 transfers are necessary.I think after a 24 point hit it would be a solid team. Now heres the question:

Would he be better off to take the 24 point hit and keep the wildcard? He only wants to win the mini league he is in and keeping the wildcard would benefit him later. A lot of the players in the league will give up so if he keeps an eye on the team he has a chance of winning it. What do you think?
