Fantasy Premier League Focus – Gameweek 3

Once again, we take time out to analyse the consequences of another Gameweek in Fantasy Premier League. Looking at the performances of the top five in the Scout League, we also cast an eye the current transfer trends, with bandwagons picking up pace over the international break:

Scout League Standings

Asriel Chen not only remains at the top of the Scout League, he climbs to number one overall in the world – despite transferring out Santi Cazorla as part of a four point hit. The decision to part with the Gunners’ playmaker helped fund a move for Robin Van Persie and with captain Carlos Tevez, Michu, Yaya Toure and Thomas Vermaelen all producing the goods, Asriel boosted his total to an incredible 303 points to proudly sit atop the standings ahead of the two-week international break.

Renior Buffon moves into second place in the Scout League and sixth overall after scoring 81 points in the Gameweek gone by. Captain Van Persie and Tevez were the main protagonists, while Hatem Ben Arfa and Moussa Dembele also chipped in from midfield along with Toure – Renoir will be happy with his wildcard after a strong contribution from the new acquisitions.

Alex Henshaw edges ominously into third place after returning 105 points in Gameweek 3 – the only member of our top five to register triple figures. Six of his front seven – Van Persie, Tevez, Ben Arfa, Michu, Toure and Cazorla – all grabbed goals, while at the back, Ciaran Clark and Guy Demel registered 17 points between them, though he’s yet to acquire Eden Hazard ahead of Chelsea’s trip to QPR next time out.

Moving onto fourth position, we find Kelly Gosson. Once again, the Van Persie-Tevez combination worked wonders, while Toure and Nathan Dyer produced the goods from midfield. Kelly racked up 77 points over Gameweek 3 and sits in 77th overall, with a wildcard now played. Darren O’Connor makes up the top five after returning 64 points last week. Going against general consensus, he opted for Lukas Podolski alongside Tevez up top, while Thomas Vermaelen and Michu also helped boost his tally to 275 points overall – enough to earn 94th place in the FPL standings.

Finally, the Scout Contributors league has a new leader. Big Dunc’s decision to take a four point hit paid off handsomely, with the usual suspects such as Tevez, Van Persie, Toure and Michu, joined by Cazorla and Jermain Defoe, helping Dunc rack up 93 points – he now sits on 240 points overall, and in 9,044 place in the rankings.

The Market Trends

With wildcards continuing to be wielded at a frantic pace, player prices are more volatile than ever. Eden Hazard is the most popular player this week – over 105,000 Fantasy managers have picked up the Chelsea midfielder after a blank Gameweek 3. Hazard has already leapt 0.6 in price and looks set to rise again, with a week and a half still left before the Premier League kicks back into action.

Carlos Tevez is hot on Hazard’s heels, with over 91,000 grabbing the City striker. Tevez has scored in three of his side’s matches so far and has accrued 33 points, more than any forward – that price of 9.8 continues to rapidly escalate. Top scoring player in FPL, Michu shows little sign in slowing down after yet another goal last weekend – the Spaniard has acquired over 83,000 transfers in and has found a place in over 31% of Fantasy teams thanks to his endeavours thus far.

Certainly, it’s no surprise to see Robin Van Persie amongst the most popular players around. With a hat-trick against Southampton, the Dutchman’s steady climb in ownership shows no sign of abating – he’s been snapped up by over 80,000 new owners and is a massive armband favourite for the Gameweek 4 home clash with Wigan.

Elsewhere, Yaya Toure (50,000) and Fernando Torres (46,000) are tempting plenty, while the cut-price route into the Arsenal defence offered by Carl Jenkinson has seen over 70,000 Fantasy managers scramble aboard the bandwagon, despite the imminent return of Bacary Sagna at right-back. Gareth McAuley and Winston Reid have also received significant investment at the back after both returned goals and clean sheets last weekend.

For transfers out, Gareth Bale has taken the biggest hit this week, with over 54,000 Fantasy managers losing faith in the Spurs midfielder. The Welshman’s failure to produce in the first three Gameweeks, despite a kind schedule, has already seen his price drop to 9.4; with (rdg, QPR, AVL) amongst his next four, though, the potential is clearly still there for Bale to produce.

David Silva and Samir Nasri have been sold on by a combined 57,000+ with a sideways move to Yaya Toure offering a cheaper and more consistent alternative in City’s midfield. Many have also lost patience with Shinji Kagawa, despite a home clash with Wigan up next – 30,000 have moved the former Dortmund man on as midfields are drastically re-assembled.

At the back, City’s failure to produce clean sheets has seen many dispose of Gael Clichy and Vincent Kompany’s services, while Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to drop David De Gea was enough to convince over 20,000 to sell off the United stopper.

Newcastle pair Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse have been slow out the blocks this season and, after a blank apiece against Villa, the Magpies pair have been dismissed by over 64,000 teams. While a Gameweek 4 trip to Everton looks tricky, the following two fixtures – (NOR, rdg) – still look prosperous for Alan Pardew’s side.

The transfers out continue to rack up for Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero. Both could well be huge differentials if they return to action over the next few weeks; at present, they have 6.9% and 6% ownership respectively, compared to Van Persie’s 29.2% and Tevez’s 47.3%.

one word of caution...........the bloke who won the entire FPL last season (Sam City) didn't even realise his team value went up until half way through the season!!!........and paid absolutely no notice to it whatsoever!!!!!

A lot of that is probably down to his team value increasing rapidly anyway as he was bound to have got on all the bandwagons before they became bandwagons anywhow.

Is this meant as evidence to support the theory that team value isn't that important? Or that luck plays a very large part in this game and actual knowledge of how the game works etc isn't really necessary?

I agree, more the latter. Actually its really a simple case of numbers. With millions of players someone somewhere will likely pick a decent team from the start and make most of the right decisions throughout the season, simple probability.

Bad I'd say! Guzan was an absolutely pointless player to have. He's the Aston Villa second choice keeper. So if Given didn't play, Guzan would have probably covered. There were plenty of starting 4.0 keepers last season though. He ended up swapping him to Ruddy if I remember correctly.

You definitely need luck but you don't win the FPL by that alone. Not possible - you have to make decisions throughout the season and you're not going to get enough correct on the toss of a coin. Judgement and information/data to make that right call with that judgement, comes into it. I'm pretty sure Sam mentioned in the interview that he was knee deep in stats by the final GW's so he seemed to take it pretty seriously by the end.

    Evening All,

Few questions for the knowledgeable amongst you. Hope you can help.

    1) Lots shipping Ivanovic out - who is he likely to get rotated with / when?

    2) Same question as above but Zabaletta

    3) Why all the love for Cazorla? After GW4 fixtures aren't that great for Arsenal

    4) Is Jenkinson a rotation risk - he's played the first three games and kept 3 clean sheets, surely he won't get dropped?

    5) What's the deal with Gomez - Out of favour/injured? Maloney first choice on pens now?

    6) Is Petric likely to start for Fulham in GW4?

    Cheers!

Actually beyond city and chelsea in wk 5/6 their fixtures are really pretty decent. Cazorla looks to be the best option for Arsenal coverage at the moment.

      1) The new right-back they bought. Could happen any time or if you;re lucky not at all. I plan to keep him for a few more weeks (until Norwich have visited) then dump. Fingers crossed I'll get through til then.

      2) Essentially could be rotated with anyone, given that with the 3-5-2 he doesn't have to play a right back at all.

      3) Quality and will churn out the results for any fixture. From gameweek 6 onwards provides nice cover for people with RVP and Tevez as captains (i.e. has good fixtures when they both have bad ones.)

      4) Sagna is simply better and more experienced. He may be eased in, but it's a matter of time.

      5) Don't Know.

      6) Wait and see, visa vie team news etc in the few games before the match. Think the bell has tolled on that

Essentially, all the players you;re worrying about but carry a slight threat of rotation currently, but you should be able to muddle through for a couple of gameweeks, while making definite plans to get rid i.e. sorting out your captains for the next weeks as soon as possible, so you can then spend transfers on these rotations risks.

I'll answer 5 first as I'm a Latics fan 5) Out of favor... and has been for a long time including last season (this wasn't a revelation to anyone who watches Wigan games) and yes, this isn't new either really, it has been known since Liverpool away last year.

1, Maybe on here, but as a whole there's still more people bringing him in... but there maybe some rotation with the new RB signed.

2, Maicon has signed and when Richards is back there's then 3 to share 1 position.

3, According to many on here he's been the best thing about Arsenal and everything seems to be via him i.e Arsenals main man.

4, Yeah he is, Sagna back soon who will likely be first choice. Jenkinson may keep his position at least till the Gooners concede.

      5, answered above

6, I'm not sure but probably yes.

Although I do rate Maloney, and have him myself, I'd be tempted to upgrade him to someone like Pienaar / McClean / another 6.5ish mid.

Maybe get rid of Kaca, too, he's got plenty of competition with Richardson arriving and Frei coming back soon, both of whom play LM like Kaca. Guthrie seems nailed on and plays just of the striker.

Agree, massively. Yaya has had a great start points wise, but he's not an out and out attacking mid. He is a top notch player, but more 'midfield engine room' than anything else so I expect as and when nasri and silva start to fire he'll not play so far forward. Cazorla, on the other hand, is the new Van Persie for Arsenal, in that everything goes through him. He is also an in the hole player so I expect his average position will be much further forward than Yaya come the end of the season.

He's got a better goals per game ratio than Yaya if you look at career stats on Wikipedia, I'd wager he is more assist friendly and everything Arsenal do is going through him . . . case closed in my opinion!
