Moving Target

Moving Target – Dimitar Berbatov

While many of the more established clubs failed to appease their fans on transfer deadline day, Martin Jol handed Fulham’s supporters plenty to cheer about with the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United. The Bulgarian moves to Craven Cottage on a two-year deal reportedly worth £5m and reunites with Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman at Tottenham:

Having been frozen out at United, the move gives Berbatov the chance to reignite his Premier League career after a difficult previous season harvested a mere five starts for the Old Trafford club. Knocking back a possible move to Serie A, with both Fiorentina and Juventus keen, the 31-year-old revealed his relief following completion of the transfer:

As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can’t wait to get started.

The Statistics

Berbatov’s career began in his native country where, after scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the Pirin Blagoevgrad reserves as a youth, he was snapped up by CSKA Sofia. Making his debut as an 18-year-old, his step up to top level football was seamless, with 26 goals in 49 league games over two-and-a-half seasons at the club before Bayer Leverkusen came calling midway during the 2000-01 campaign.

Berbatov spent six years with the Bundesliga outfit and, while the first half of his tenure was relatively successful with 11 goals and nine assists from 54 appearances, the latter part was outstanding – his final 100 games in Germany harvested 57 goals and 24 assists before Tottenham came calling in May 2006. The Bulgarian’s time at White Hart Lane lasted just a couple of seasons, though; striking up a partnership with Robbie Keane, he flourished under Jol first time round with 27 goals and 15 assists in 69 league games and was snapped up by United on transfer deadline day in a sensational £30m swoop.

Of his four seasons at Old Trafford, only one – the 2010-11 campaign – can be classified as a real success from a personal perspective. With 20 goals that term, Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in the top-flight, with the particular Fantasy highlight being a five-goal haul against Steve Kean’s Blackburn in November 2010. Edged towards the periphery last term, with Danny Welbeck preferred as Wayne Rooney’s regular partner, Berbatov’s fate was finally sealed this summer after the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. His record at United stands at 48 goals and 20 assists from 108 league appearances and, with seven goals in 12 games last term, it’s clear he’s far from a finished Fantasy force.

The Prospects

Judging by Fulham’s form under Jol last term, it could well be that Berbatov’s potential is mainly restricted to home games. While the Cottagers racked up 36 goals at home in 2011-12 – only three less than Spurs and Arsenal – they were dire on their travels, scoring 12 times away from home all season. It was a situation that, to a certain extent, made Clint Dempsey a frustrating purchase, though the US international more than made up for his away blanks with goals aplenty at home.

At present, it’s too early to judge what role Berbatov will be handed for his new club. His creativity could make him the ideal foil for Mladen Petric, with the Bulgarian positioned in “the hole” behind but, with Hugo Rodallega also coming into the equation, Jol’s intentions are still unclear. The former Wigan man was handed the full 90 minutes at West Ham last weekend, while Berbatov replaced Petric at the break; the latter, of course, has already produced in his only home game this season and is far and away the most popular of the three across the Fantasy games.

Penalty duties look up for grabs, with Berbatov perhaps first in line to prosper. Last season’s number one and two, Danny Murphy and Dempsey, have now moved on and the Bulgarian’s nonchalance from the spot would certainly boost his appeal. Reasonable prices of 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game are also likely to tempt further – particularly at home, Jol will be relying on Berbatov to bring a spark of real quality to his attack as the Cottagers readjust to life without Dempsey and Moussa Dembele.

With five goals in their opening home fixture compared to two in two matches on the road, the Cottagers seem to have quickly settled into a repeat pattern of last season. The chance for points looks good, then, ahead of home clashes against West Brom and Villa in the next six, while away trips to (wig, sot, rdg) are as kind a run as Jol could wish for. Certainly, with Berbatov on board, it’s a schedule that Fulham won’t be approaching with any lack of confidence.

    Trying to resist this -

    Bale > Hazard
    Toress > RVP
    Petric > Fletcher
    Lescott > Ridgewell

12 point hit. Ouchhhhh!! Could alternatively skip Lescott transfer and just change petric to lambert

      IMO here's the two priorities:

Petric out. I like Lambert a lot so he'd be a good replacement
      RVP in.

      The rest aren't urgent IMO.

Said before, I would give Petric another week. He is at home and the fact that he was taken off for Berba the last day could be down to the fact that he was carrying a knock going into the game and it was over as a contest at half time.

The lack of support for my no RVP strategy is making me think again. Basically because the risk of not getting him when everybody else does is too great.

IF i was to get him, it would be for a hit this week. And probably having tarabaat and marveaux dropping in price before I can get rid.

Who is the best midfield option in the 6m range (morrison, lallana, jarvis, nolan, snodgrass, pilkington). I will probably rotate him with another mid in the same range once I can get rid of tarabaat.

I caved into the urge to WC on Sunday evening in order to get RVP without a 12pts+ hit. If I'm going to knee-jerk and WC (as I have done in previous seasons) I may as well do it when I can make a lot of extra cash.

I like Lallana and Snodgrass a lot but experience tells me Nolan will score higher depsite less favourable stats.

Your choice. If you're ok with a 0.3 drop then keep.. and you've already missed 0.1 on hazard and bale has dropped to 9.4.

Question stands: is it worth keeping bale and losing 0.3 TV? (0.3 each way, and then hazard may be out of reach without a hit..)

But what're your thoughts on this:

8 pointer: DDG, Zab, Noble to 4.5 GK, 4.5 def, Hazard

Allows me to keep Bale and drop some rotation risks who I need out at some point anyway. Usually very against taking hits, but seriously considering this one!

              Im against that 8pter tbh.

              DDG is worth keeping.

Maybe Zab out due to rotation risk with Maicon joining city..

he had his chance, playing against wba and norwich at home in the last 2 gw, but failed to deliver. its always form > fixtures, but maybe when spurs start to win games, bale will be considered again

Is McAuley worth the extra 0.1 million (versus Ridgewell or Olsson), doesn't matter much to me with 2.5 million in the bank. But I just wanted to know who has the most attacking potential in all of these..

I'd put Ridgewell 1st then Olsson the Mcauley. No one is quite sure what Popov's role is, but my view is he's largely cover for Ridgewell/Ollson.

Morning people, here's what the WC team has ended up as so far. Seems like cheap-mid defence is the way to go so far.

£33.2 mil to spend in defence and keepers with a front 8 of:

Yaya Toure - Hazard - Michu - Dyer - Sterling

    Torres - RVP - Tevez

Dont like that front 8 at all.

      Hazard-Cazorla-Barfa-Michu-Stelring/Guthrie
      RVP-Tevez-Lambert

more balanced, therefore easier to make transfers in the future.

      I'm considering this:

      Hazard - Cazorla - Michu - Morrison - Nolan
Tevez - RVP - Petric (>Lambert next week)

      Leaves me 34.9 on defence/keepers

Annoying that 4 of the mids would be away this week though.

i think rvp is crucial for sure, and torres is still not going to be a big scorer on a consistent basis. graham is a problem now too though, swansea have brought in some fierce competition. nasri is also going to get less and less gametime when silva comes back, at least if the 3-4-1-2 continues to be used. it's a tricky one... 8 point hits scare me though 😛

i'd wait, m'self. 🙂 it's immensely satisfying when everyone jumps on a bandwagon and a little bit of patience pays off. qpr are very unpredictable, they could conceivably give chelsea a real game on their own patch - they could also get whipped. spurs are also very unpredictable, especially with the newbies all integrating.... but bale is a proven beast. the odds are in hazard's favour for sure but i don't think they're 4 points in his favour, m'self.

biggest mistake may have been transferring out hazard during GW1 (before the second game, to get dyer whose price was skyrocketing at the time, in preparation for a torres ---> rvp/rooney move) despite having him as captain, but then again, chelsea looked awful the other day and have some very tricky fixtures coming up, plus the absent GW3... so maybe it'll prove a good decision after all? probly wishful thinking haha. and i could've got some extra moneys if i'd waited for all these price rises... 🙁

Yeah but to be fair he's kept 3/3 cleansheets for me so far, and that includes stoke away and liverpool away. Decent effort, very capable of springing a surprise.

That doesn't even consider his attacking potential, either.

    Morning,

Players I want to get rid are DDG, Ivanovic, Kagawa.
What do you think of my plan, sounds right?

Gw4: keep them all, not worth a hit to get rid of anyone
Gw5: kagawa => cazorla or save transfer (depending how they perform in gw4 and potential price changes)
Gw6: ivanovic => baines and kagawa => cazorla if saved transfer in gw5
Get rid of DDG when ever it's porssible without a hit.....

    Cheers!

it all depends how they perform gw4. If cazorla get brace and kagawa again subbed 60 mins, I'll do that transfer before gw5 because of prices + potential.
And I don't think homegame against chelsea is that bad fixture for cazorla...

      Not for me...

If your looking for a cheap 3rd striker, there is much better value to be had in the 6-6.5m region IMO...

Lambert, Graham, Kone to name a few...
