Watchlist

The Watchlist – Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert fitted the pre-season bargain profile perfectly. He came armed with a record that more that suggested he’d be a prime Fantasy talent; a monopoly of Southampton’s attacking output that saw him fetch 27 goals and 14 assists, an involvement in almost half of their goals as the Saints swept to automatic promotion from the Championship.

The optimism surrounding Lambert’s potential took an early jolt, only to be resurrected almost immediately. Saints’ boss Nigel Adkins tinkered with his lineup for their opening fixture at Man City, leaving Lambert straining on the leash from the subs bench. Belatedly, he made his Premier League bow as a second half sub and coolly stroked home an equaliser before the Saints eventually succumbed to a marauding City.

A disappointing blank in the 2-0 home defeat to Wigan quelled the enthusiasm but Lambert was back in the side and on the scoresheet in the St Mary’s encounter with United. Lambert couldn’t prevent another defeat but not before contributing a towering header and a smart assist in the dramatic 3-2 setback.

In short, then, Lambert has already delivered on the top flight stage against two of the so-called toughest defences. Having proven his value to Southampton and his pivotal role in their attacking ambitions, it stands to reason that Lambert will get further opportunities to flourish now that the fixture list is brightening for Adkins’ men.

While Danny Graham has, so far, failed to capitalise on Swansea’s buoyant start to the season with just one strike, Lambert has sneaked up and, in our Watchlist rankings at least, now superseded him as the budget striker option of choice. Graham still holds the advantage in terms of ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game (7.3% vs 5.8%) but that could be set to change in the coming weeks.

Sadly for Lambert, the landscape up front has now been altered, however. Dimitar Berbatov and Steven Fletcher have both shown enough to have Fantasy managers freeing up funds to slot one of that pair alongside two heavy-hitters. Suddenly the budget striker option has become unfashionable – Graham and Lambert are perhaps off the agenda.

Lambert has the talent and fixtures to overcome this. Southampton have, amongst their defensive failings, bristled with creativity and goal threat, suggesting that they will attack over their forthcoming fixtures. The arrival of Gaston Ramirez, already impressive in his Emirates cameo, only adds to their arsenal to help keep Lambert fed.

With set-pieces and penalties in his locker, the 31-year-old Lambert looks almost certain to be in profit if Adkins can turn his attacking outlook into goals. This potential could yet sway some from the allure of the mid-price prospects on offer. The home clash with Villa will be looked upon as the start of Southampton’s season and could see the Lambert bandwagon revving its engines as another differential comes good.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I am often tempted to take a hit on bringing in one defender to another but I usually talk myself out of it cos even if u get a clean sheet its cancelled out by the hit. Granted you may get points for a goal or assist/bonus, but lets be honest - that doesn't happen that often!!

If you're looking for a long term solution, go for it. I did Jenk to Ridgewell for a hit this week. Settles my defense rotations and I now have nailed on players in my team. I take a hit only when I think it'll beneftit me in the long run and I have strict transfer plans for the next 2-3 gws. So had to be this week.

Which one of these WC sides is stronger?

    A:

    JJ/Bego

    Baines - Saylor - Hughes - Demel - Nelsen
    Michu - Hazard - Santi - Pienaar - Sterling
    RVP - Tevez - Berb

    0 in the bank

    Or B:

    JJ/Bego

    McAuley - Saylor - Hughes - Demel - Nelsen
Michu - Hazard - Santi - Ben Arfa - Sterling
    RVP - Tevez - Berb

This leaves me with 0.9 in the bank to maybe bring in an Arsenal defender for GW7 onwards.

I don't hugely rate Maicon myself in all honesty, but nothing is ever apparent with Mancini. That said, I really believe Zab will start this week, so if you're pondering whether to transfer him out - I'd wait until next week if possible.

Garcia - Too early to call IMO, there is a LOT of competition in that City midfield. Yaya is nailed on I think but Rodwell and even Barry (lol) will be competing with Garcia for that other slot, if it does become apparent though he could become a great differential, a real threat from set pieces it seems.

Maybe should be a bit more precise about my calculations for whether hits are worth it. Was hesitating about Graham to Berb for a hit because I thought Berb wouldn't get me any profit from one goal, but he probably would with bonus points.

The only problem is finding someone to downgrade by 1.0...

Graham looked well tempting at the start of the season as a lone striker at the front of a tasty attack and that's how I still perceive him by reflex. In reality though I think he is used more to distract defenders than to score. He certainly hasn't really looked like scoring much.

Silly me, I was always looking for Form and could only find Value (form), but just noticed it's there!

Yeah Fletcher is absolutely kicking ass because he's a great finisher. Have spent the last few weeks trying to get him in but the way my team was set up I had to take hits, and that stopped me. Now he's got 3 goals out of the way and I wonder if in the tricky coming fixtures it'll be a big ask to keep up this output. Particularly as he's been given few opportunities - he's just been such a good finisher.

In my head I had Kags and RVP down as a killer central combo (the way Pienaar & Baines are a killer combo on the left, or Walcott & RVP were a killer combo on the right last year, or Adebayor & Bale were a killer combo in the central last year). It just hasn't quite panned out as expected.

That said Kagawa has scored this FPL season, and he has just assisted in the CL. Surely Fergie's gonna commit to it this week in a big game?

Rooney still looks a few weeks away according to Facer (in the "From The Physio" article). By that I bet it'll be closer to a month.

For what it's worth, when Rooney, RVP and Kagawa were all on the pitch at the end of the GW1 Everton game, Kagawa still played in the hole, behind a front three of RVP, Rooney and Nani/Young I think it was.

It took me ages to right out this reply, to my proposal to rotate berba, so you probably missed it on the last page.

I’ve never had a problem with points on my bench, its points from my first 11 that are important.

I can get berbatov + malony for 12.1m
EVE, AVL, WHM, EVE, WBA, SUN, RDG

If I go for Lallana/ Ramirez, I can extend it for 13.1m
FUL, AVL, TOT, EVE, SWA, SUN, NEW, NOR, TOT, NEW, qpr, SUN, SOT, SWA, ARS, WIG, EVE

If I spent the same money on Ba + Guthrie (for example), I would play Ba for every game (home and away). I think my idea might be better!

The key being that Fulham are great at home, but rubbish away. Lots of people getting in berba, and presumably planning to play him every game. I'm not sure that is the best idea!

Also, I don't have RVP, so more money to play with, so I wouldn't mind benching a 7.5m striker every other game.

If I do it, i'll probably get Maloney, first then keep an eye on the southampton boys

Double EVE, WBA and SUN could be quite stubborn. Makes that rotation quite unattractive. Ba & Guthrie sounds better - that's what I mean by picking the best front 7 and having one 4.5 who does play.

sun and sto may be a problem, liv less so. He can score against basically anyone, but it does lower your expectations somewhat.

Neither of Ba or Fletcher have brilliant fixtures in the next 6 TBH. If anything, Berb's are better.

That's true. I just think points, especially attacking points, are difficult enough to predict that the points gained by rotation may be small or even negative. I'm finding that form is winning out over fixtures, which undermines rotation somewhat.

      1. if you think Ba's recent altercation with Pardew will affect him in any way in terms of game time or mindset which ultimately leads to form, then yes..
      2. If you don't think Defoe will be able to continue his form then no... In terms of reliability I'd stick with Ba.

    Hi Guys!

I have a topic that I would like to discuss with you. I am sure there are plenty of you around who have RVP, Tevez + 6-8mil striker upfront about. So my question to you is whether it is viable to keep RVP (he's so expensive) and Tevez when there are so many good alternatives which are cheaper? Furthermore, I agree that keeping one expensive striker perhaps is the way to go so I figured possibly the best option would be to have fully fit Aguero whe he's back as he is nailed on for City. We don't expect RVP to score 25-30 goals again surely when Rooney is back.

I am contemplating of having Aguero + 6-8mil + 6-8 mil front strikeforce soon as it would free up cash to upgrade other areas in my team. Cheers in advance for your thoughts.

Man Utd and Man City are going to score the most goals, and considering both of there midfield's is a minefield in terms of rotation are think you are better of sticking with your attack heavy strikeforce

What if RVP stops scoring or scores say 1 goal and not in every game? Ba., Defoe, Fletcher, Berbatov look tempting. I also think that RVP may be shifted to play behind Rooney in some games. Basically what I am saying is maybe it's just worth having only Kun as your expensive striker and that's it.

I am sticking too mate but when Kun comes back he's just more tempting for 11 mil don't cha think? I have Lambert, Tevez and RVP and currently have no funds to upgrade Lambert to Berba, Fletcher or Ba 🙁

Getting RVP out would enable me to have a better strikeforce I think. Especially when Kun comes back Tevez may cease to become a regular starter in the PL.

Funny you should mention all that; I was only thinking the other night about ditching RVP. Initially I got goosebumps at the thought of it but your points are good ones and some I'd been pondering over - its all about value and you're right, its hard to see him being worth 13+ million over the course of the season. Sure, there'll be the odd week where he'll pick up 15-20 points, but as we saw last weekend there'll be some where he'll pick up one, and if someone good is sitting on the bench with points in the bank they'll be lost too! (Case in point Kaca for me!!!) And getting someone like Aguero or someone cheaperwill free up a tonne of cash to bolster the team elsewhere - its a brave move tho and the buy back cost if he really consistently catches fire would be extortionate...I reckon it'll have to be a season-long decision to take him out if we go that route, and don't look back!! I might let it simmer on the back burner for another week or two and see then how things look.....

Thanks. Sure, I shall wait a week or two and see how we don with Rooney back. Then I shall make my decision. I think that Kun will outscore RVP this season for some reason so I am more tempted to go with him and not RVP.

I hear ya - still a little worried about Kun's away form tho.....and as we know RVP seems to be fixtureproof - assuming he plays of course!! With Kun not starting in the CL I'd imagine he'll only be a bit part player this weekend so we should have at least one more week before people start jumping on him.

well the fact that he's missing for a 'couple' of weeks suggests he's out for at least the next 2 gws which is a blow considering Wigan (h) is a plum tie. After that its city (a) and newcastle (h), bearing in mind newcastle are a good away side, the prospects look rather bleak for cuellar

Apologies for re-post - WCing and want a Chelsea defender – was going to be Ivanovic but re-thinking due to the new RB. Worth getting A.Cole instead or am I safe sticking with Branislav?

Ivanovic has been playing well so think he's secure enough at the moment

Right guys here's my plan for next two gameweeks

    Schwarzer I Ruddy

    Ivanovic I Zabaleta I Demel I Clyne I Harte

    Hazard I Yaya I Michu I Piennar I Maloney

    RVP I Tevez I Graham

0.3 in the bank 1 FT

    Gamewek 5; Zaba to Ridgwell

    Gameweek 6: Ruddy to Begovic

    Reason for Ruddy transfer:

If I keep Ruddy/Schwarzer fixtures will be:

wig, MCI, sou, AVL, read, STO

If i got to Begovic/Schwarzer fixtures will be:

wig, SWA, sou, AVL, SUN, QPR

          Hahaha

It'll give me good coverage of defences who are both on form and have decent fixtures i.e. FUL,CHE, STO, WBA, WHU

I wonder how Arsenal are going to fit in Wilshere when he is back. They have some good options in midfield now

Meh, I wouldn't waster the transfer TBH. Its six of one half dozen of the other ATM, you may as well give Graham one more week at least, unless you were to upgrade Graham entirely....
