The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sinful Saint

Last weekend it was Dimitar Berbatov, this evening it’s Rickie Lambert that will be wandering into our minds mid-conversation, over the Saturday evening tipple. Prompting nagging doubt, questioning our best-laid plans.

Lambert is the latest to cause cracks in our established Fantasy thinking. Like the Bulgarian, he arrives in a Gameweek where, once again, the likes of Eden Hazard and Michu – assets who were cemented in our squads – returned blanks. The foundations of the template team again come in question then, with Lambert joining the queue to find a place in our forward lines that looked so settled just a fortnight ago.

There’s little doubt that, as we suggested in the midweek Watchlist article, Lambert has emerged as the budget striker of choice. However, we also spent some time in said article pondering if he could be more than that. If he could displace the array of mid-price assets fighting for our attentions – Dimitar Berbatov, Steven Fletcher, Jermain Defoe. Tonight, I’m even wondering if he can threaten to break up the heavy-hitter pairings.

I’ll be watching Carlos Tevez carefully against Arsenal. While he’s flourished in the opening matches, Sergio Aguero’s return to fitness and Roberto Mancini’s “nine lives” approach to Mario Baltoelli raises a cause for concern. That’s before we consider that Eden Dzeko has, as he’s done so often, found the net when he’s given pitch time.

A Tevez blank or, worse still, an early withdrawal against Arsenal, could trigger a rethink. There’s little doubt that City have the fixtures to find goals in the coming weeks, but growing concerns about their defence and Mancini’s insistence that it must approve, has raised alarm bells for me.

I remember when City battened down the hatches, when they fought for 1-0 wins away from home. Should Mancini take that route again, we could see 4-5-1 with Yaya Toure behind Aguero away from home, something that would hurt Tevez’ scoring potential immeasurably. While Sir Alex appears to be going all out for goals, will Mancini dare to tweak his tactics to tighten up?

Such thoughts crop up before I even consider the merits of sticking with the ultra-expensive Robin Van Persie, under the threat of rotation and rest. I’m trying to fight those doubts off, however.

There is clearly a very attractive plan B forming. Lambert, like Berbatov, offers assured starts. He offers the “big fish in a small pond” scenario. He offers spot-kicks, assists and he faces a long line of fixtures that could bring further returns. The temptation to go with this option, even over the proven class of Tevez, does begin to mount when you consider that Mancini’s whims can waver and throw us the unexpected.

This kind of talk is almost sinful, “Knee Jerk” material of the highest order. We’re talking about supreme Fantasy assets here, while Lambert is perhaps just a noisy new arrival at the party. Four goals in five games is a decent entrance, however, and certainly Tevez will need to offer a reminder of his class on Sunday if tonight’s bout of puzzle-head isn’t to transform into a fully-fledged plan of action.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Does anyone know why Pienaar didn’t get an assist for Mirallas goal? Also, why Southampton 3rd goal was considered an own goal and Everton 3rd goal was not? I really don’t understand…

        Bollocks, not the rules:
Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal.

In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick gets an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

All assists are reviewed daily but remain provisional until verified by the Press Association. For the avoidance of doubt, points awarded in-game are subject to change until the Gameweek closes. Once a Gameweek closes, no further adjustments to points will be made.

They aren't creating a barrel load of chances but they have the potential to. Once McClean, Johnson, Larsson and Sessegnon are all firing there is so much creativity in there for Fletcher to benefit from. And if he is doing the business with little to work with think what he is capable of when the team pick up even more.

This is a really tough decision, to wildcard or not to wildcard. If I do WC I have a solid defence from now to December/January. But changes to my attack are not necessarily urgent. But rearranging my defence and other things will cost me several hits which will basically cancel out any scores over the next 3 weeks. I'd have to be really lucky to get through the next few without some really poor scores.

I'm so unsure and I have to make the decision in the next 2 hours. Some have said WILDCARD and others have suggested I be patient and take big points hits. I don't know who to believe really! 😀

My fear is I WC and it backfires big time. My attack is ok so I don't see myself making mega changes but things are very unclear at the moment (Aguero/Tevez, RVP worth the money etc.)

I wish I didn't have to WC but I think the prospect of big points hits might force my hand.

    Team at the moment:

    Jussi al Habsi

Collins Boyce Lescott Terry Fabio

Kagawa pienaar HBA Pienaar
 McClean
    Tevez Pog Ba

imo all of you defenders needs to replaced, so thats 5 transfers, but nothing really needs changing, so i would slowly make the transfers over a few gws. However if the defenders you want to transfer in are rising too fast and you won't be able to afford them WC.

Just watched it - don't think was over first time. Makes no difference, still an assist for Pienaar. RVP got one similar last season for Walcott - through ball, Walcott hits post, taps in rebound. Assist given that time.

    Re: Pienaar 'assist';

Once Mirallas hit the bar it became a new passage of play. Mirallas scored but can't assist himself, therefore no assist.

An example from last season would be Ade's penalty against WBA. Foster (think woodwork) parried it back to Ade. Ade scored.

The FPL scoring went: Missed pen for Ade. Pen save for Foster. Goal for Ade. Goal conceded by Foster.

Bale, who was fouled for the pen, got no assist, as Ade assisted Ade.

Yes, by all stretches of the imagination that should be a Pienaar assist as his cross-ball made the goal but it won't be accordinging to the rules.

I think it's vaguely important still. If the goalkeeper would catch the ball, hold it for a few seconds and then roll it straight out to Mirallas, I don't think the assist would be given.

          This one will, of course.

But if you move to a rules based system (as opposed to the old discretionary system), you have to stick to those rules, even if they don't make much sense.

If they want to change the rules mid-season, fine, but as the rules stand there is no mention of 'passage of play' or anything similar.

All fair coments chaps but the rules are rules, whether we like them or not.

The only thing I miss about last season was being able to send an angry email at HT to the YTS manning FPL towers and get decisions changed in an instance.

Wrong. And poor analogy. You only get an assist from a pen if the pen is scored. Pen wasn't scored, no assist. This is closer to RVP / Walcott last season - RVP got the assist. Exact rules here:

Never ceases to amaze me when people make arguments about how points should be awarded without reference to the rules.

It's like when I play football every week 11-a-side and you can't convince someone it's a foul even when you cite the laws of the bloody game.

not sure the ade pen applies as that one is definitely a new passage of play as the game stops for a penalty.
closest thing i've seen to this 'pienaar gate' is an assist RVP got last season. rvp passed to walcott, walcott hit the post, then scored his own rebound. i got home to see rvp got the assist and was amazed.
the only 2 possible differences between that and 'pienaar gate' is the keeper saved the mirallas shot (walcott's went straight onto the post), and pienaar wasn't in the area when he passed to mirallas (pretty sure rvp was so maybe that somehow changes things).

Hitting the post/bar can't create a new passage of play, imo ... but the goalie, maybe. As Garg says, I think it would need to be 'if the goalie becomes in control of the ball', as opposed to just parrying it.

Johnson > Agger > Skrtel is my preferred order at the moment. Perhaps another Skrtel fall may change that but i doubt it

Dyer / Cashley to Cazorla / 4m def for a hit.

    Got exactly the right money.

    Worth it?

      Jussi al Habsi

Collins Boyce Lescott Terry Fabio

Kagawa pienaar HBA Hazard McClean
