The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Gameweek 5 – Saturday

A mixed bag from Saturday’s action, as mid-price assets flourish and Eden Hazard stutters to disappoint his armband backers. Here’s the “Stock Check” from Gameweek 5 so far…

On the Up

Rickie Lambert
Southampton’s striker is well and truly in the mix for our third striker spot. We raised him in the Watchlist this week and Lambert lived up to his billing, gaining a brace in the 4-1 comeback victory over Villa. We anticipated his bandwagon – it looks like we’re going to get it.

Steven Fletcher
The Scot maintained his incredible form for the Black Cats, converting his fourth shot for his fourth goal to put Martin O’Neill’s side in front at Upton Park. Fletcher remains another candidate for our Fantasy forward lines, although again, Sunderland had just his one effort on target all afternoon.

Marouanne Fellaini
Yet again, Fellaini was outstanding for the Toffees: it’s tit-for-tat with the Belgian and Steven Pienaar who was also excellent in the 3-0 win at Swansea. Given Everton’s invigorated attacking form, there’s a case for considering both. For those wondering, we’d expect Pienaar’s assist to be awarded at some point.

Leighton Baines
We gambled on his Scout Picks selection for an away game but Baines duly delivered again. It was another display full of creativity, with the assist for Felliani’s goal and a clean sheet thrown in. We’ll keep on stressing this – if you’ve money to spend on your defence, spend it on Baines. If you haven’t money to spend on your defence, Baines is presenting a very good case to try and find it.

Kevin Nolan
A third strike of the season saw the Hammers rescue a late point again remind us all again of Nolan’s consistency as a mid-price midfield offering, with or without Andy Carroll leading the line.

Jason Puncheon
If you need a budget option in midfield, Puncheon just might be the man to rival Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling. The winger kept his place despite a debut for Gaston Ramirez and delivered his third goal of the season – at least we think he has – shortly after it was scored, the Press Association changed it to a Ciaran Clark own goal. We await the verdict on that one.

Going Down

Nathan Dyer
Dropped to the bench to make way for Pablo Hernandez’ debut, the spritely winger finally emerged for the second half with the Spaniard suffering a knee injury. Dyer didn’t last long, however, seeing red for two bookables to add further frustration for his concerned Fantasy owners.

The Swansea Defence
Five goals conceded in the two games since the injury to Neil Taylor. Chico will surely return to the back four for the trip to Stoke next weekend after he serves out his three-match ban in the Capitol One cup tie in midweek.

John Terry
Considered untouchable within the Chelsea back four, Roberto Di Matteo rested both him and Frank Lampard to the bench after the midweek Champions League exertions. Terry missed out on the shutout as Ashley Cole owners cleaned up.

Eden Hazard
Backed by the majority in our Captain Poll, the Belgian drew a blank and was replaced by Victor Moses on 61 minutes. Those who handed him the armband now face an uncomfortable Sunday as Robin Van Persie takes the field at Anfield. Decent returns for the Dutchman will again remind us all of his consistency as an armband option.

Fernando Torres
Still owned by 29% of Fantasy Premier League managers, a home fixture with Stoke looked like an opportunity to repay the faith that has remained following the Gameweek 1 double fixture. Sadly, as has often been the case, the Spaniard disappointed. With mid-price prospects flourishing – we can surely expect big sales ahead of Gameweek 6.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Which is worse, the risk of having a '60 minuted Hazard' every week, or the risk of not having Hazard every week? He is clearly one of the best FPL prospect in the league, but will he get the minutes with UCL duties in the way?

Arsenal scored 6 in one game, Chelsea struggled to beat Reading, They just look for 1 or 2 goals or penalties and sit back. Their style can be ultra defensive once they get the lead, look at the Barcelona game for an example. Chelsea have relied on their defenders scoring goals and Torres is just so off form.

Ok it is time this madness to stop.

Situation 1: Sterling crosses to Suarez he shoots the ball gets back to him and he scores from the bounce.
        Exhibit A: http://www.101greatgoals.com/g.....underland/

Result: Sterling been award the assist.

Situation 2: Pienaar crosses to Mirallas he hits the post, the ball comes back to him and he scores.
        Exhibit B: http://www.101greatgoals.com/g.....v-swansea/

        Result: No assist for Pienaar.

In both cases the touch from the defender was in side the box and no one touched out side. The last attacking player that touched the ball was Sterling and Pienaar.
Exhibit C: “From rules: Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.
If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal”

Pienaar Assist? Why hasn’t it been awarded? – according to the rules –

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal.

Vorm touched it inside the area, so doesn’t alter the assist for Pienaar and the crossbar is part of the field of play equivalent to it hitting the referee.

I would relax. It's only because the Press Association haven't given the assist - FPL works with different (if similar) rules, so should retrospectively add it. The only way they won't give the assist is if there was a significant touch outside the box after the cross.

I think it is. FPL have the rule that the attacking player who puts the ball into the box gets the assist, regardless of the number of defensive touches or touches by the goalscorer afterwards. The PA in such cases never award an assist - so it's not automatically added on FPL. But FPL nearly always give these once they've had a chance to review - and more often than not it's not added straight away. My guess is you'll get it tomorrow.

There's a question of whether the cross hit a defender on its way in, outside the box. Didn't see it myself, so don't know. If not, it should definitely be Pienaar's assist.

I have three players on my transfer out list-graham, gibson(don’t ask wh I have him) and cuellar..
I intend to replace them with lambert, pienaar and low ton but don’t want to take more than an 8 point hit.
    Advice anyone?

      Friedel - Federici,
      Ivanovic - McAuley - Cuellar - Demel - Clyne,
      Hazard - Yaya - Michu - Pienaar - Guthrie,
      RVP - Tevez - Berba. (0.1)

      A) Friedel -> Foster, Ivanovic -> Baines for -4
      B) Michu -> Fellaini, Ivanovic -> Baines for -4
      C) Wildcard.

Keep in mind that I took a hit this week as well so not too thrilled with the idea of back to back hits.

Project X in Haren about 20 miles from where I live.

small village with population of 18,000.

some real low life scum turned up and trashed the place.

not cool. not funny. not worth a fecking smiley.

@Corrigan/Megatron, I think you've convinced me enough it's worth WCing. Going into the next few weeks with this defence and taking 8 point hits just doesn't look nice. I think I'm going to have to push that button. Do it tonight or wait for tomorrows games?

i WCed cos i hated my defenders-and keepers were a travesty- in the long run. they cudda easily been phased out at the expense of a couple 4 pointers here and there but i figured screw it. if a WC saves me those 4 points i may as well do it now and get a team i'm happy with

38 points pre bonus (and Pienaar assist) with Tevez and Van Persie to play.
Considering I had Rangel, Dyer and capt'd Hazard I'm feeling pretty relieved, 50 pts definitely doable.

Made a major boo-boo on my WC this week, had Fellaini in before and got Michu in for him :p So its a pretty kneejerky move on my part, but yeah. Swansea are playing bad, Everton are super hot and they have the fixtures. Pretty sure im going to do it.

I'm thinking Hazard to Sterling and then Cuellar/Hughes/Gallas to Baines? I have two free transfers, will be made the day before Baines is set to rise again.
