The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Gameweek 5 – Saturday

A mixed bag from Saturday’s action, as mid-price assets flourish and Eden Hazard stutters to disappoint his armband backers. Here’s the “Stock Check” from Gameweek 5 so far…

On the Up

Rickie Lambert
Southampton’s striker is well and truly in the mix for our third striker spot. We raised him in the Watchlist this week and Lambert lived up to his billing, gaining a brace in the 4-1 comeback victory over Villa. We anticipated his bandwagon – it looks like we’re going to get it.

Steven Fletcher
The Scot maintained his incredible form for the Black Cats, converting his fourth shot for his fourth goal to put Martin O’Neill’s side in front at Upton Park. Fletcher remains another candidate for our Fantasy forward lines, although again, Sunderland had just his one effort on target all afternoon.

Marouanne Fellaini
Yet again, Fellaini was outstanding for the Toffees: it’s tit-for-tat with the Belgian and Steven Pienaar who was also excellent in the 3-0 win at Swansea. Given Everton’s invigorated attacking form, there’s a case for considering both. For those wondering, we’d expect Pienaar’s assist to be awarded at some point.

Leighton Baines
We gambled on his Scout Picks selection for an away game but Baines duly delivered again. It was another display full of creativity, with the assist for Felliani’s goal and a clean sheet thrown in. We’ll keep on stressing this – if you’ve money to spend on your defence, spend it on Baines. If you haven’t money to spend on your defence, Baines is presenting a very good case to try and find it.

Kevin Nolan
A third strike of the season saw the Hammers rescue a late point again remind us all again of Nolan’s consistency as a mid-price midfield offering, with or without Andy Carroll leading the line.

Jason Puncheon
If you need a budget option in midfield, Puncheon just might be the man to rival Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling. The winger kept his place despite a debut for Gaston Ramirez and delivered his third goal of the season – at least we think he has – shortly after it was scored, the Press Association changed it to a Ciaran Clark own goal. We await the verdict on that one.

Going Down

Nathan Dyer
Dropped to the bench to make way for Pablo Hernandez’ debut, the spritely winger finally emerged for the second half with the Spaniard suffering a knee injury. Dyer didn’t last long, however, seeing red for two bookables to add further frustration for his concerned Fantasy owners.

The Swansea Defence
Five goals conceded in the two games since the injury to Neil Taylor. Chico will surely return to the back four for the trip to Stoke next weekend after he serves out his three-match ban in the Capitol One cup tie in midweek.

John Terry
Considered untouchable within the Chelsea back four, Roberto Di Matteo rested both him and Frank Lampard to the bench after the midweek Champions League exertions. Terry missed out on the shutout as Ashley Cole owners cleaned up.

Eden Hazard
Backed by the majority in our Captain Poll, the Belgian drew a blank and was replaced by Victor Moses on 61 minutes. Those who handed him the armband now face an uncomfortable Sunday as Robin Van Persie takes the field at Anfield. Decent returns for the Dutchman will again remind us all of his consistency as an armband option.

Fernando Torres
Still owned by 29% of Fantasy Premier League managers, a home fixture with Stoke looked like an opportunity to repay the faith that has remained following the Gameweek 1 double fixture. Sadly, as has often been the case, the Spaniard disappointed. With mid-price prospects flourishing – we can surely expect big sales ahead of Gameweek 6.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I always ask myself who are the people who have extremly good GW's, are they regural players or people who just have lucky at that moment.....

So, how many of you in the past had a really good Gameweek, fo example, in first 100 or 1.000 results for that week?
My best GW was around 8.000 last year...

OK just so everyone gets it and stops complaining about this assist rule it was there last yr don't act like it's new.

If a player passes the ball/crosses and it gets deflected from the opposing defender, or headed out/cleared write into the path of the attacker who ends up scoring from it. This means the teammate who crossed the ball gets the assist.

as for Pienaar he writely doesn't get the assist since Mirallas didn't directly score from his cross. He hit the post from the first effort meaning his goal was assisted by himself etc same player who got fouled in the box doesn't get a assist from scoring his own pen.

Pienaar owners can blame Mirallas for that and stop crying

So you are an authority on fpl or just spouting off and claiming it as fact. Fpl will decide, as they did with sterlling last week. If it is an assist it will be given. We don't know for sure so please stop passing Bollocks off as fact

I have Pienaar but I'm not crying over the assist The reason it wont be assist is because they never have given them otherwise so far so many players would be getting assists, the sterling one was different last week because it was correct Suarez didm't touch it the first time thats the difference

      That is plainly ridiculous.
The passage of play wasn't over, the ball didn't go out of play and wasn't taken off him. It's effectively the same as Mirallas taking several touches before scoring or kicked the ball off a defender and regained control as he was dribbling through to score.
If that's going to stand the rules need changing.

If it helps, one thing I learnt last year was to do your utmost not to play a team you aren't satisfied with, even if it means taking hits or doing things that look unusual. Getting Graham out and benching Rangel at home are two punts I'm very glad to have made this week.

Pienaar instead of Fellaini nawt so much... but I am cooler with Pienaar long term.

As individual prospects both are excellent - there is always the risk of being screwed by Everton losing form of course, but the upside would provably pay for it.

We (Stoke) played well today and if anyone uses the term 'parking the bus' to describe our play today, don't listen to them as they're talking rubbish. We were more than a match for Chelsea and were well worth a point. Their goal was well worked and it was disappointing to lose the game we put so much into.

Further, I made the decision to captain Hazard today which was, in hindsight, a bad one. Don't think he ever got near our goal and rarely looked threatening. Too narrow all in all and that favours our type of defence. HOWEVER, I'm not going to get rid on the basis of one game. A player of that quality is going to find the space to score and assist many this season. No kneejerk reactions here.

As for Stoke, we are looking very promising and most of our fans will tell you the same. The league table is false at the moment given the teams we have played (three of the eventual top four) as well as a promoted side on their first game at home since coming back to the Premier League. Further, the signings of Adam, N'Zonzi and Cameron look to be very good ones, particularly N'Zonzi who has performed exceptionally since arriving from Blackburn.

In fantasy terms, I see potential in Stoke's attack this season and that is something that I haven't said since Etherington was firing consistently a couple of season's ago. Crouch is a shoe in and will score more goals given the fact that we now have a midfield that is 10x better than last season and the creativity for the big man to fill his boots.

Stoke's potential is mentioned very little on this site.....I think your fixtures change for the better from gw8. Meaning switching from Swansea players to Stoke is a good idea then.

Which midfielder would you recommend from Stoke, as we have plenty of striking options already?

I think Stoke have plenty of midfield options at the moment, which means rotation will be inevitable. N'Zonzi seems to be a shoe in but is obviously more defensive than attacking. Of our midfielders, I think it will be between Adam and Kightly for most points.

You have to look at Walters though, rated as a midfielder but a Pulis favourite. He will never get dropped it seems, despite not scoring very many at all last season. HOWEVER, if he gets firing alongside Crouch, he could represent a bargain for fantasy managers.

First time I've seen Stoke play today and I thought you guys played great. I was impressed with how they coped with the champions of Europe. What impressed me the most was the physicality of your team--looked very strong and skillful at times.

Just the " Cricket that is Crouch---The Harlem globetotter wannabee, and Owen just won't cut the mustard!

But I tip my hat off, I was impressed.

In a few weeks when his form dips again I would yeah, Oscar has too much quality to not be bought at £7.8m and no points having both of them.

No replays, so let's try another angle, which one you see more essential to have gw7 =>

      a) Ivanovic (fixtures not so great after gw7, but very attacking and che seems to keep cs's)
      b) Cazorla (haven't done that much, but fixtures getting better and has potential to be fantasy gold)

If only I had made even one of the Van Persie/ Berba moves early in the week, I would've been able to get Baines in for Ivanovic for free next week. As it is I have to take a 4 pointer. Don't you just hate how these late moves eat up your funds for later moves. And you can't even call them careless 'cause at the time it seemed sensible to wait for as long as you can to make the move. Just goes to show that there's nothing wrong in making early transfers. Early transfers all the way from now on. 🙂

Yep, Berbatov cost me 0.3 more because I waited. But I wouldn't have sold Graham if I hadn't found out about Swansea's huge list of injury doubts including Graham, and that happened after the rises.

Question for all you seasoned pros. I'm going to most likely WC tonight...My 3 strikers are: Tevez Pog Ba

I would lose .3m on selling Tevez

Ba is due a rise tonight and may rise again, so it's worth keeping him right?

Pog I can sell for Fletch/Berb/Lambert

My question is: All 3 of Fletch/Berb/Lambert look like they could easily get a 2m rise...this is a bit of a predicament as I'd love to have 2 of 3 to catch their rises but I don't want to lose money on Tevez, assuming I want to keep Tevez, am I basically stuck with him for the WC as selling him would lose me money?

Yeah ive given up on them now. It says they are 'checked and confirmed' before being Updated, so i think it's over. As for why with Pienaar's, i can only assume they think the nick off the defender on the cross was deemed to alter the direction of the ball, as anything Vorm did in the box wouldnt have counted. Shame, as it was an assist.

If you owned this shower of sh*te, would you WC?

Mignolet - not presenting brilliant value
Feds - injured + possibly out of favour

Ivan - doing well but Baines looks irresistable + rotation risk?
        Gibbs - OK
        Hughes - OK
Clyne - scored today but still, Soton are leaky
        Demel - OK

Hazard - looks to be losing form?
Michu - would probably keep a few more weeks
        Pienaar - OK
Dyer - rotation risk, too much Swansea
Marveaux - has to go ASAP

RVP - fine, I'm ok with potential rests
        Tevez - as above
        Torres - HAS TO GO.

Any help and advice much appreciated over here 🙂

                There'd be a fair few changes, don't worry 😉

The thing that's swaying me is that there's 5 NECESSARY transfers:
                1. Federici out
                2. Baines in
                3. Dyer out
                4. Marveaux out
                5. Torres out.

Depends how much you've got in terms of cash and how many transfers. Bringing in Baines to that defence in favour of anyone but Ivan and swapping Torres out for Berbs/Fletcher/Lambert/Ba would change the complexion pretty markedly.

You could then give the Swansea contingent one or two more games - I think there'll be a reaction from the Everton game certainly.

Wildcard wouldn't be terrible strategy either.

          1. Gks need changing pref. to Bego/Fos
          2. Midpark is lightweight with just Hazzard. Cazorla or Bale/both need to be in there. Too much money in deefence.
          3. No Baines.

Dont think there is enough fixing to really warrant a WC though the granted, the Gk situation is worrying but next week Mingie Min has a decent fixture.
