The Digest – Gameweek 10

We draw a line under Gameweek 10 with a tip of the hat to Everton’s Belgian destroyer, the home form and team work of West Brom and raise questions over whether those who play in “the hole” are forcing a Fantasy rethink…

The Player

Marouane Fellaini notched for the first time since Gameweek 5 in Saturday’s draw at Fulham to serve a timely reminder of his mid-price capabilities. Fellaini’s double at the Cottage, supplemented with three FPL bonus points, earned him a 15 point haul for Gameweek 10 – more than any other player – and rewarded those owners who chose to hold following a recent knee problem.

Fellaini’s omission from the Gameweek 8 trip to QPR saw almost 206,000 Fantasy managers sell him on and with doubts over his availability for the Merseyside derby the following week, a further 117,000 parted company with the Belgian – only for him to recover and supply an assist. Those who sold him on have been somewhat reluctant to bring him back due to the fact that Fellaini is just a single caution away from a one-match ban but his weekend haul highlighted his importance to an Everton side that have now scored 19 goals in the opening 10 Gameweeks – more than the likes of City, Spurs and Arsenal.

His role in “the hole” for the Toffees means Fellaini is a constant menace to opposition backlines, with David Moyes’ tactics getting the best out of his aerial ability in and around the box – indeed, Fellaini has now scored five times, more than Nikica Jelavic. The Belgian’s weekend haul also put clear daylight between him and Steven Pienaar in the battle for the best value Toffees midfielder and despite that imminent one-match suspension hanging over him, Fellaini is clearly back in vogue – 90,000 Fantasy managers have already drafted him in after his weekend exploits. His FPL value is back up to 7.1 and those pondering a move to acquire his services will doubtless be feeling the pull of his rising popularity.

A home clash with Sunderland, a team that have looked more vulnerable in the air than most this term, bodes well for the formidable Fellaini and, should he deliver again and avoid his booking, we will doubtless see another significant rise in the week that follows.

The big question is whether Felliani is a season-keeper. Given his continued form and the struggles of Nikica Jelavic, it seems highly unlikely that we’ll see the Belgian dropped deeper into a traditional midfield role just yet. Indeed, Everton’s attack has been so effective with Fellaini in that role in terms of threat, Moyes seems likely to go with the tactic for the remainder of the season. If that is the case, then Fellaini would seem guaranteed to bring more havoc and return further hauls like the Craven Cottage display.

The Team

Another home game, another win for West Brom. The Baggies have now picked up 15 points in front of their own fans – more than any other side this season – and have registered just one win less at the Hawthorns than the entirety of the previous campaign. Steve Clarke has clearly made a big impression at home, with four Hawthorns clean sheets also accrued, though on their travels it’s been a different matter; his side have returned just two points and three goals over their opening four road trips – only the bottom two have fared worse.

The Baggies sit pretty in fifth right now but with four away trips in their next six (wig, CHE, sun, swa, STO, ars) are set for a testing time over the next few Gameweeks. As mentioned in Scout Notes earlier, Clarke seems to be utilising his squad to great effect; while no one player is the star of this side, plenty have chipped in with crucial contributions – 10 West Brom players have racked up 29 FPL points or more. Indeed, in each of the four classifications, the Baggies have provided us with a player who has returned 40+ FPL points already – Ben Foster, Gareth McAuley, James Morrison and Shane Long.

Bearing in mind that Morrison is the costliest of this quartet, at 6.3 in FPL, it’s a sign of the mid-price appeal of a side that seems to be benefitting from a more open style of play this time round, with Clarke allowing his charges to express themselves with a little more freedom than the previous regime.

The Talking Point

Glance at the top 10 scoring midfielders in FPL and one thing is immediately noticeable – five of the top performers play in “the hole” for their respective clubs. Which begs the question: should there be more variety of player classifications within our Fantasy games? As tactics evolve within the Premier League and the shift towards 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 becomes far more commonplace, would Fantasy games benefit from introducing an “attacking midfielder” bracket?

Fellaini, Kevin Nolan, Santi Cazorla, Michu and James Morrison are all racking up the points from more advanced berths and offer far greater goal threat than the traditional central midfielder type – Fellaini started the season at 6.5, compared to Mikel Arteta’s 8.0 in FPL, for example, despite the fact that the latter sits in front of the Arsenal back-four in a 4-2-3-1. The Belgian’s constant goal threat has seen him so far outperform Nikica Jelavic for the Toffees and while it’s great for Fantasy owners, the variety across our midfields is rapidly decreasing this term with a seemingly obvious and exclusive pool of talent to select from.

There will, of course, be the obvious exception in any given Gameweek but after 10 rounds of matches, those players in “the hole” clearly have an overall advantage. Strategies and tactics would be taken to a whole new level if Fantasy managers were restricted to a maximum of two players from this classification – maybe even take away their ability to earn an extra point for clean sheets and the game would be instantly more intriguing. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but FPL showed they were willing to revise the bonus points last year – a system that places the likes of Sandro and John Obi Mikel in the same player pool as Fellaini and Cazorla could surely be improved upon.

The results from qualifying are being processed tonight - because we've had a record number of entries it will take time to gather all the fpl scores and process the results. I'm hoping we'll have an idea of the qualifying score early morning tomorrow with the draw to follow in the evening but I'll keep you posted.

Defensive midfielders should be classed as defenders.

On the whole they get less attacking returns than at least one of the full-backs/centre-backs for each team anyway.

I'm interested in the idea of breaking up the midfielders classification further and can see the idea, but isn't this essentially what the pricing should take into account?

Terrible idea imo, unless they change the scoring for deeper mids. The pricing is how this is done and I think it should stay that way.

I think every regular starter should be priced, rewarded points and classified so that they are worth considering owning. Obviously pricing is part of this job but somebody like Mikel could be player of the month, play a crucial role in clean sheets and be all round superb and even at 4.5 he wouldn't be worth owning. Price him alongside the defenders at say 6-6.5 and he'd be worth considering.

Would need a new category then which I'm okay with but if you look at attacking returns of DMs they'd rarely outscore defenders anyway.

I suppose any further complication of the game would widen the gap between us and the casuals so in that way it would be a good thing but I'd approach any change with extreme caution. Pricing/classification is a very fine art and I imagine it would make template teams even more commonplace round here.

It should do but it's not. With some players, we're always a season behind. Fellaini, Michu and Nolan will be 8.5 million next season but that's a season too late when it comes to balancing the game - we'll just move on to the next two "support strikers" available for 6.5 or less. It's going to happen every season because promoted sides will often go with 4-5-1 and find themselves someone to play that role.

Consider just how many midfielders you will realistically sign this season - it's probably about a dozen. You wouldn't look beyond this because there is about half a dozen heavy-hitters and half a dozen bargain "in the hole" mids. Beyond that, everyone else is a big risk. That's causing template teams because we're not being forced to think beyond this small selection of midfielders.

Even the likes of Toure are getting ignored this year due to the value that Fellaini etc offer, let alone folk like Arteta and Carrick who never seem likely to get near our squads. There's a clear division in midfield between "in the hole" mids and wingers and the rest. Why not create that division and force us to think about something a little different?

It would lead to more variety in squads (I'd only be able to select 2 of the whole dearth of strong attacking mids) and therefore create differentials all over the place. If the mids like Barry, Carrick, Mulumbu etc actually got 2 points for a CS, this would both reflect their role for their team and create a niche for these players, particularly if attacking mids only gained points for goals and assists.

Fantasy Football seems set in the 4-4-2 era and I reckon it needs to think again.

8 in the hole, 3 on the wing in 4-3-3, Hoilett and Snodgrass who are a a bit of both and Gervinho who was OOP and on the wing.

Plenty of good points in there Mark, I'm not sure Fellaini is necessarily the best example as he's definitely one who would confuse the classification - this season he's definitely 'in the hole', my impression of him last season was that he was much more withdrawn so he'd probably have been an OOP defensive midfielder in the 'new' system getting extra clean sheet points as well as all the attacking returns. He'd have been as near essential as it's possible to be so would reduce the variety. Being a season behind would still be a problem some of the time.

I suppose it's the same as anything, change can be good or bad, it depends how well it's managed. I can see the merits of the suggested revisions but I can also see it going badly wrong. Maybe I should make the effort to be more of a glass half full kind of guy 🙂

totally agree, always annoyed me that those at top of league hardly ever makes changes. Can't see how that is management to just get lucky early and leave players there. It should be more about picking right squads for sets of fixtures.
The 50% value increase abviously is there to prevent managers shooting up in budget for players, but doesnt mean anything if they never move them on. Maybe there should be something in relation to point scoring for length of time you hold a player, that way people will have to manage their teams better.

Would you then expect/like to see a change in acceptable formations of your players? Such as having to play at least one defensive mid? If they don't also change this aspect of the game I would expect to see the majority of teams with the two cheapest DMs rooted to the bench so they could maximise their attacking players. It would make the cheap attacking defenders far more in demand as you might not want to automatically have two defenders on the bench each week like at present.

Couldn't agree more. FPL is very restrictive and you get way too many template teams. Separating Defensive Mids from Attacking Mids would go a long way to making things more interesting with differentials and unique approaches to lineups.

at the start of this year, Fergie has still not decided what information they should play. After Kagawa injured, he brought back wingers ManU scoring for fun, and most of all recent goals of ManU came from the crosses (last time a goal came from the middle was Kagawa goal vs Spurs). Valencia should be main source of assists

started 7 games, and top points is 5. for his price youd expect a double figure haul every 5 games or so.

                  better options around his price.

I would be interested in a re-classification of midfielders. Would make the game even more challenging and prospects such as mikel would become more enticing.

Basically you are increasing the potential of more players which isa good thing.

Who would have got more points this season assuming both were classified as defenders?

            Ivanovic, Cahill, Mikel?
            Rafael, Carrick?

Defenders are often more attacking than defensive midfielders.

No Midfielders stay as Midfielders but gain 2 points for a CS whereas Attacking Mids is the new classification and they only get goals and assists. You could go three mids and 2 AMids or the other way around, with pricing still dictating the balance you go for.

I would be more interested in a re-assessment of the points ie, more geared towards the forgotten of FPL - the defensive mid. This could be done in conjunction with a change in formation forcing selection of one DM perhaps.

The Guardian game was run like this:

          2 goal keepers
          5 defenders
          2 defensive midfielders
          3 attacking midfielders
          3 forwards

I loved it, and would love a move on to that format. 🙂

Fellaini has the same problem. Wingers would be a possibility but central midfielders are meant to be able to be both offensive and defensive and so could be promoted/demoted to either role in a season, messing up the classifications.

Re MF re-classification. Another possibility is to have more categories: CB, FB, DMF, CMF, AMF, FWD etc. but allow players to belong to more than one category - Fellaini could easily be DMF / CMF / AMF. Phil Jones would be CB / DMF. You get the idea. Would allow a lot more flexibility and variation between teams.

But you'd just get the player in the position from which they'll score the most points for doing the same thing. You'd get Fellaini as a DM as that's the position which will give him the most points etc.

It makes the multiple classification pointless as everyone will only pick them in one position.

Actually this is exactly how fantasy baseball is played. You get players eligible for multiple positions.

What about this for an idea?

Each team is only allowed one player from each premier league team.

Would you do Morrison to Fellaini for a hit?
That'll give me both Pienaar and Fellaini and I can ditch Pienaar later for Santi Cazorla.

No. He might be fit for the next game. Sunderland are strong defensively. Unlikely Fellaini's strength will cause them problems - Pienaar's trickery semms more of a threat.

Depends on how much you want to upgrade him by, but looks like you will have to move a big midfielder to balance. Or you could go for just one main keeper, as some are doing, and downgrade Schwarzer to a 4m option

To respond to the point that who would own defenders if DMs were classified as defenders too. Firstly you would price them around the same price as defenders, not what they are now I think thats pretty obvious. So taking some examples:

Parker scored 62 points last year and would have scored 97 points as a defender last year, BAE scored 135.

Carrick scored 97, would have scored 149, Evra scored 159.

Barry scored 83, would have scored 123, Kompany scored 145.

Mulumbu scored 98, would have scored 129, McAuley scored 110.

Arteta (who wasn't really a DM as much last year) would have scored 171 which is massive but on a par with Verm if he'd played the whole season.
